Book Description
The Making of Economic Policy begins by observing that most countries' trade policies are so blatantly contrary to all the prescriptions of the economist that there is no way to understand this discrepancy except by delving into the politics. The same is true for many other dimensions of economic policy.
Avinash Dixit looks for an improved understanding of the politics of economic policymaking from a transaction cost perspective. Such costs of planning, implementing, and monitoring an exchange have proved critical to explaining many phenomena in industrial organization. Dixit discusses the variety of similar transaction costs encountered in the political process of making economic policy and how these costs affect the operation of different institutions and policies.
Dixit organizes a burgeoning body of research in political economy in this framework. He uses U.S. fiscal policy and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) as two examples that illustrate the framework, and show how policy often deviates from the economist's ideal of efficiency. The approach reveals, however, that some seemingly inefficient practices are quite credible attempts to cope with transaction costs such as opportunism and asymmetric information.

Book Description
Sorghum is the fifth most important cereal crop in the world. Both sorghum and pearl millet are important and sometimes indispensable for the survival of man and domestic animals in austere, dry environments. Their genetic diversity and numerous uses will hold appeal for citizens of the Third Millennium who seek food diversification in order to increase enjoyment, health, and convenience. Unfortunately, sorghum and millet remain susceptible to many diseases, diseases that can cause economic loss and jeopardize the food security of farmers as well as consumers and middlemen who rely on their crops. This landmark reference contains the global sorghum and millet pathology community 's decennial summary of diseases and work in progress based primarily on contributions to the Third Global Conference on Sorghum and Millet Diseases in September 2000, sponsored by INTSORMIL, ICRISAT, and INIFAP. That international review focused on integrated management of sorghum and millet diseases for the 21st century and the importance of these crops in agro-ecosystems. The participants reviewed disease status in national, regional, and global contexts as priorities were adjusted for the next decade. The importance of proper pathogen identification and the use of a population biology approach were emphasized.Editor John Leslie has expanded the book 's coverage beyond the conference presentations so as to guarantee a well-rounded treatment of sorghum and millet disease. One hundred and ninety-seven authors from thirty countries contribute to a truly global picture. This critical review provides a unique long-term analysis of different issues over the last quarter century, a considered summary of the current critical problems, and an evaluation of the sorghum and millet community 's progress since its previous meeting in 1988. Perhaps the book 's greatest value lies in defining the research agenda for these crops and their diseases for the next ten years. As such, it is an indispensable resource for plant pathologists and other crop scientists, policy makers, sociologists, and others involved in tropical or sub-tropical agriculture. This work is based on the Mexico 2000 meeting under the auspices of ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics) and INTSORMIL (International Sorghum and Millet Collaborative Research Support Program).Sorghum and millet are very important agronomic crops in many parts of the world, specifically in the semi-arid regions in warm areas. The crops are of great significance in supplying food and feed in the developing areas of Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Modern Grain Sorghum Production.......1999-12-25
I am teaching stuff in Çanakkale University, Agriculture Faculty, Field Crops Department. I study on sorghum production.
Book Description
This edition of Rosner's text offers a mastery of methods most often used in medical research with specific reference to actual medical literature and actual medical research. The approach minimizes mathematical formulation yet gives complete explanations of all important concepts. Every new concept is systematically developed through completely worked-out examples from current medical research problems. Computer output is used to illustrate concepts when appropriate.
Customer Reviews:
The backwards book for biostatistics.......2007-03-23
At the time I was taking bio-statistics for my MPH at Harvard School of Public Health, a friend was taking a different class using this book. I ended up buying it, but only as a reference. Althought the material is all here, the organization is scrambled with theory intermixed with the example that starts the topic discussion - some may like this, but personally it drives me crazy. At the end of the semester, I had a wonderful grasp of statistics, and my friend was pulling his hair out. One real plus of this book is that the index includes the clinical examples that generate the discussion, so I do use this book as a reference for "like-problems".
My Prof had trouble understanding the book!.......2006-12-18
My prof had us buy this book for an intro stats class for grad school. She didn't know how good it would be, but thought it applied to our health policy program. This book was not very good. At one point even our prof said she did not like the book and thought the practice questions were unclear at times. Unless your prof forces you to use this book, I would look at easier books (this is not good for a basic stats class). We also used SAS and this book wasn't any help with that portion of the course. It was not worth the $110 price tag. If you are a prof looking for a stats book, please don't select this one (the price alone is crazy).
Poor layout.......2006-11-10
I was assigned this text for my biostatistics class. Unfortunately, it is a poorly designed textbook, as everything is 'backwards'. Rosner gives examples before he introduces the material; he derives formulas before giving the real equation to use.
The only good thing about the text are the summaries included on the CD-rom. I have decided to read these instead of the actual text, because they are straightforward and leave out extraneous material.
Awesome Biostats Primer!.......2006-02-01
I'm currently an undergraduate student at Univ. South Florida majoring in social work (BSW). I am also doing a math minor because I plan on going on to graduate school in a dual program, social work (MSW) and public health-biostatistics (MSPH).
Having read through the first five chapters (can't put the book down), I found this textbook gives just enough information on the subject matter without going into math theory. Afterall, biostatistics is an applied field not theoretical.
This is a perfect textbook to get primed in the field of biostatistics. I cannot wait to finish this text and learn more theory and history of the many facets that biostatistics has to offer as it relates to the behavioral sciences.
The one drawback about the book is that it does not offer much on how to use a statistical analysis software package, rather it assumes knowledge in this area and just provides the data sets used in the book. A supplimental workbook for this text on the after mentioned topic would be wonderful.
Fundamentals of Biostatistics by Rosner.......2005-11-17
This is an easy-to-read volume on the implementation of statistics for medicinal applications. The author describes the following:
- measures of location i.e. medium white blood counts
- properties of the standard deviation and special case analyses
- graphic methods
- laws of probability
- gynecological problems
- demographic problems and inference
- hypothesis testing and confidence interval analysis
- goodness of fit for regression problems
This work would have a wide audience of readers throughout the
medical world. It is priced reasonably for consumer-conscious
purchasers. The author provides a rendition geared to practitioners. Much of the work is crafted for technical
analysis by professionals , as opposed to theoretical mathematics. For instance, the volume is useful to confirm
medical hypotheses within predefined confidence intervals.
Some reviewers have indicated that the later part of the text
is complicated. For instance, the t-distribution and estimation
techniques may require a simpler explanation. In college, I took
nine reasonably rigorous courses in higher mathematics.
During those courses, I found that the Schaum's Outlines were
good in the areas of calculus, differential equations,
linear algebra, probability and statistical inference. Each
outline provided nearly 1000 solved problems with both theory
and practice explained comprehensively. Students of the Rosner
text would be helped immensely by the Schaum's Outline Series.
This acquisition is still quite good for the price charged.

An insightful look into the methods of animal rights groups.......2000-08-07
As someone who lost numerous relatives in the Holocaust as well a brother to SIDS several years before the 7/4/89 raid discussed in this book, I find the decidedly anti-human nature of animal rights groups such as PETA rather disturbing. I found the claim that this book contains "malevolent misinformation" amusing. While the book (as well as any examination of animal rights groups' activities) reveals many examples of the ways by which such groups seek to twist facts in order to sway the public against animal research, the most telling example given was PETA's panel of sixteen "experts" who denounced Orem's work immediately after the raid. By taking quotes from a variety of physicians with absolutely no background in sleep research, PETA played on the public's respect for the MD degree held by their "experts". It is telling that all of the physicians that routinely denounce animal research (C. Ray Greek, Kenneth Stollard, Murry Cohen, Neal Barnard, etc.) are all die-hard animal rights activists. There is no non-animal rights related opposition to biomedical research using animals. While this book will not change the minds of those people who have already been taken in by anti-research propaganda, it will continue to give universities and corporations that conduct animal research insight into the nature of animal rights groups' "direct action" and propaganda operations. Highly recommended.
Exposes animal rights real agenda.......1999-10-06
The comparison to Nazi Germany is frightening when you start researching deeper into the animal rights movement. The real agenda is not rights for animals, but control of humans. Most are pro-abortion and for ethanization and vivasection on human beings, while supporting rights for animals, whon they view as superior creatures. They think nothing of fire-bombing businesses, stealing pets, releasing livestock and captive bred animals illegally into places they are not native to and subjecting human children to suffering by destroying medical research.
Excellent, thorough look at animal rights terrorism.......1999-07-23
This is a very short, but very well written look at the animal rights movement in general and animal rights terrorist attacks on research facilities specifically.
The comparison between animal rights and Nazi Germany that is made in the book is between the Animal Liberation Front's tactic of firebombing labs and other forms of intimidation.
The book does a good job of showing how mainstream groups like PETA piggyback off of the terrorist acts and regularly lie about animal research.
Highly recommended.
If it was possible, the book would get zero stars.......1999-01-27
An absolutely ridiculous book, full of contradictions and biased accusations, finding its climax in the comparison of the animal rights movement with Nazi Germany. Whoever considers reading it - you're advised by donating your time and attention to better literature than that.
one star - strictly for humor value.......1999-01-08
This funny little piece of tripe can be summed up in one simple warning: "Oooh, the big bad animal rights activists are gonna getcha!"
Absolutely ridiculous.

Book Description
In this magnificent book, Bartle Bull charts the history of the African safari from the first great expedition of 1836, when Cornwallis Harris crossed the Transvaal with an ox-wagon, to the guides of today, carrying on the tradition in the swamps of Tanzania and the forests of Ethiopia. Capturing the timeless beauty of the African bush, Bull tells of the men and women who made this land their home from Frederick Courtenay to Beryl Markham, the legendary expeditioners who brought fame to the safari; from Teddy Roosevelt to the Prince of Whales, and the native Africans who made the adventures possible.
An active environmentalist, Bull examines the ethics of hunting and the apparent dilemma of the hunter-conservationist. Against a rich background of tribal and colonial history, he documents developments in weapons and transport, in literature and film, in game control and conservation, and conveys the attraction that has never changed—the magical freedom of the African bush.

History at its Best.......2007-01-09
Excellent book steeped in history and written with great style. One can almost feel Africa and how Safaris changed people as well as a country.
Amazing Stories.......2007-01-06
This book, Safari, is one of the best books I have ever read. The
chapters can be read individually yet read perfectly as a whole.
I bought a number of the books as gifts. They were VERY well received.
Thank you for this excellent product.
Details the history of the African safari from its first expedition of 1836 to modern times.......2006-07-05
Safari: A Chronicle Of Adventure details the history of the African safari from its first expedition of 1836 to modern times. Bull is an environmentalist, so his survey Safari isn't your typical gun-hunter's celebration of good old days, but a survey of conflicts between hunting and conservation, weapons and transport, game control and more. From economics and financers of the safari to mishaps, adventures, and famous personalities involved in safaris, vintage black and white photos pair with wide-ranging personal and political stories for maximum effect.
Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure by Bartle Bull.......2003-10-02
A wonderful book covering the beginnings of the African Safari to the present. Many current authors use this book as reference for their own books such as Peter Beard, Bibi Jordan, Kuki Gallman, and Mirella Ricciardi. If all of these authors use this book as a reference and quote it throughout their own books it has just got be good. I recommend it highly for any African Safari book collection!
Safari - A journey through African history.......2002-07-25
This well written book documents the evolution of Safaris from the early Boer settlers through the modern camera hunters.

Not Your Ordinary Adventure !.......2000-03-18
Mr. Butts has invented a whole new genre with this book. I literally could not put it down. Aside from being a genuine, keep you up all night page-turner, it comes with some really interesting, inspiring thoughts on living. I liked it and would like to see more. I would highly recommend it.
A guide book to the rest of your life........1999-01-02
This fictional adventure is really an instructional book on how to be a better person through the remainder of your life. The Three Tresures of Courage described in this book offer us the insight into how to change our life in a very positive manner.
Cleverly written to work your mind........1998-09-24
Rick's work is excellent. The adventure becomes so real and vivid in your mind that you'll just know that the book was written for you. It is hard to put the book down! The journey to find the three treasures- the treasure of the mind; the treasure of the heart; and the treasure of the spirit captures the ups and downs we all face. You'll appreciate the wisdom of Rick's work.
I've had the pleasure of attending several of Rick's live presentations, and this book is a great compliment to his live seminars. He has many wonderful ideas for living in the 21st Century Jungle.
Inspiration for those at the crossroad of life........1998-06-08
"The Safari Chronicles" is a fictional story, with which the reader can easily identify, due to its highly realistic nature. Several major crises happen to the lead character, Jim, who finally goes on a safari to find himself. The adventure proves to be more than he had bargained for (despite the fact that the safari was free of charge, in terms of monetary price). Over the course of the safari, Jim reads from a manuscript left to him by one of the leaders of the group. This script proves to be his guide for courage and strength, in what becomes a struggle for survival. It would not be fair to pass off this book as a mere fictional drama. Due to its realism, the reader cannot help but use Jim as a focal point for his or her own struggles, past or present. This book can be useful for educating oneself about priorities -- how to rank them, and how to go about implementing them; but could be especially helpful for anyone who is currently at a crossroad in his/her life. In short, it deals with the truths that we all know (or should know) about life, and illustrates one man's successful struggle with incorporating them into real life.
Book Description
While many freelance writers struggle to earn a living wage, Bob Bly has proven year after year that it's not only possible to earn far more, it's possible to to transform words into a $100,000 a year freelancing business.
Customer Reviews:
Great Guide to Financial Freedom!.......2006-12-06
Thanks to Bob Bly's books, and this one in particular, I've successfully made the transition from corporate attorney to freelance copywriter! Bob Bly gives step-by-step, easy to follow tips, instructions and ideas for building a successful writing business. Some authors discuss theory at length - not Bob Bly. He touches on theory only when it's critical to understanding the concept. Otherwise, he sticks with practical, 'here's what and how to do it' type of information. If you're considering a freelance writing career, don't pass up this book! /s/ Lynn Roberts, Attorney-turned-Writer
We've Changed Printers.......2006-08-18
Maury Erickson of Filbert Publishing here. I'm one of the people who published this book.
I thought I'd take a moment to reply to a couple comments on this Amazon page.
Yes. I totally agree. In the beginning of our publishing history, we dealt with some definite quality control issues. Thing is, we were hoping to create an earth-friendly product made by local talent. Clearly, that vision didn't work well in the long run. Suffice it to say that we're now printing this title elsewhere and the finished product looks fantastic.
Bob Bly is one of the most generous individuals we've ever dealt with. He's as nice in person as he appears in his books. The information he provides honestly works. You don't need a big-time education. You don't need to be blessed by luck. Just a little elbow grease and know-how will take you very far in the freelance writing profession. Just ask my wife. She's a Bly fan and is currently reaping the benefits.
I appreciate your comments and wish all of you the very best in your freelance endeavors.
Good advice on a wide variety of writing related topics.......2006-07-02
This book is a compilation of previously published articles and covers a wide variety of topics such as: book proposals, technical writing, setting fees, speaking etc.
I found a great many golden nuggets of information in these pages. I'd recommend this book for all those who would like to get a good taste of the breadth of Bob's wisdom.
As others have mentioned, the binding is not the best, but I was gentle with the book while reading it, and didn't have any pages fall out. Even with the binding issue, I consider this a worthwhile investment.
If I had purchased it, I would have returned it.......2006-04-01
I was given this book as a gift and made it to about page 20, at which point I threw it in my recycling bin.
I'm sure there is valuable information to be found in the book somewhere, but the quality of binding is so exceptionally poor that it was a pain to read even before the pages start falling out.
It is great that Mr. Bly makes over $100k a year, though disappointing that at this point in his career he is cutting corners to up profits by self-publishing such an utter rip-off.
Fantastic Guide.......2005-09-30
Bob Bly's books are a godsend. They are easy to follow and honest about the business. A must have.

Product Description
Animated films often bring to mind images of Saturday morning cartoons on television, but at one time, animated films, both long and short, were found mostly on the silver screen as part of the featured program. In 1977, George Lucas even specially requested a cartoon to open Star WarsDuck Dodgers and the 24½ Century, featuring Daffy Duck. In its rich history, cinematic animation has developed from silent monochrome images to sound-filled shorts that ran with newsreels and adventure serialsto animation sequences used to enliven commercials or live-action filmsand finally to feature films like Fantasia and Cinderella. This encyclopedia covers all English language animation from the crucial first eighty years of its history. From the popular to the obscure, from Bugs to Mickey, from the short to the feature, nearly 7,000 items are covered. Each entry includes production information, date, running time, and a synopsis. Much of the information compiled here is rare. For example, character voices once considered anonymous are here identified, and animated films now lost because they were once considered expendable are here given the attention they deserve. A complete index allows multiple points of access. Replacement volumes can be obtained individually under ISBN 0786428600 (for Volume 1) and ISBN 0786428619 (for Volume 2).
