A good intro to case based learning.......2005-12-28

As an undergraduate instructor teaching pre-professionals, I find this book to be a good starting place to approach case based learning. There are some shortcomings of the book (some advanced knowledge is required that is normally not present in undergrads), but if you are looking for a good theory into application text this is as good a starting place as any. I especially like the endocrinology questions as they are multi-system in nature and give a good overview of the complex nature of hormone/system communication.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A survey of 163 medical practitioners from three federal facilities was undertaken during February through April 1996, to assess attitudes toward, confidence in, and familiarity with clinical practice guidelines. A response rate of 83.4 percent was achieved. Practitioners attitudes toward guidelines were found to be generally neutral. VAMC practitioners were found to have slightly more favorable attitudes. Levels of confidence in guidelines issued by various organizations were found to be in the low to medium range. VAMC practitioners had more confidence in guidelines issued by third party payers than Army practitioners. Levels of familiarity in guidelines developed by various organizations were generally lower than the corresponding confidence scores. No differences existed among the groups. Practitioners thought that formal literature review and reliance on national experts were the most important methods used in guideline development. Also, the characteristics of validity, reliability, and flexibility were important in practitioners' acceptance of guidelines.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to determine the extent that social factors, health beliefs, and attitudes influenced caregiver's decisions in home management with over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Home management decisions were studied in relation to seeking professional care. The association of parents' decisions concerning OTC medications with social factors, as well as beliefs and attitudes related to illness, susceptibility and severity, and medication effectiveness was examined. A theoretical framework based on the Health Belief Model (Rosenstock, 1974) guided the conceptualization of this study. A convenience sample of caregivers with an index child of 3 - 5 years of age was recruited through county-based Head Start programs. Approximately 50 caregivers completed the study instrument at monthly parent counsel meetings. Data were analyzed using Pearson product- moment correlational coefficient. Significant correlations were noted between the age of the caregiver, perception of severity of the child's illness, and perception of the child's susceptibility to illness and calling the doctor for advice or intervention. There were also significant correlations between both the economic status of the household and the perceived effect of OTC medications with caregiver's report of when they would give OTC medications. No significant relationships were found between trust in doctors, barriers to seeking care, and gender of the child and either the choice of giving OTC medication or calling the doctor.

Several recent developments in neuroscience, psychology, and economics have helped to focus thinking on this issue: the computational description of cortico-striatal networks in terms of reinforcement learning models, recognition that midbrain dopaminergic activity could reflect an error correction learning signal, improvements in imaging technology, the recognition that multiple controllers of actions and of values contribute to the development of adaptive behavior, and the recognition that theories of value derived from economics can provide a principled means of incorporating intangible factors such as risk, uncertainty, and temporal discounting into computational models of neural system.The contributions to this volume are forward-looking assessments of the current and future issues likely to be faced by researchers in this area. While this workbook is not as inclusive as Wingfoot's, it is more current. It also addresses some issues that are not covered in Wingfoot's. If you are planning on hiking the AT, I would recommend purchasing both..... Happy hiking. Its always an adventure...

Compare The Advice and Make Your Own Decisions.......2003-04-22

Christopher Whalen gives a good basic planning device for a Thru-Hike and the information can be applied to any long trek. The area that brings me some concern is the divergence from accepted advice regarding clothing. CW recommends cotton underwear and most who hike now advise that a quick drying material be utilized. If this is a result of the book being written before the implementation of new materials then the later editions of the book should provide up to date information rather than to just crank out additional copies of out of date material.

Another way that this book could be improved is to put it in loose-leaf form so that pages can more easily be copied since that is a recommendation of the book for certain pages.

There is much in the book that is very helpful but there is room for improvement.

Chris Whalen's book, helped me prepare for the long walk through the mountains. I just hiked the AT, I used Chris' book to prepare. It was like a workbook, I was able to tear out and photocopy the pages for use in preparation of my trip. There are charts, diagrams and important info. I would've been in trouble a few times had I not gotten this book first. Thanks a lot Chris!

Best Writing Resource Out There!.......2006-09-10

While I've been teaching for many years, there is rarely a source I can use without reinventing it almost completely to meet my needs. This is not the case with Teaching Qualities of Writing. It is fantastic!!! I purchased the book and the CD with lessons. It is fantastic! The various writing lessons are taught in a spiral fashion building on the other qualities. They all fit in perfectly with the six trait writing my district is focused on this year. Many of the ideas I have used for years but Portalupi and Fletcher have added a new level, a new resource and books sources for many of my lessons.

Teaching the Qualities of Writing is the best money I have ever spent for a classroom resource. The price is a bargain since all the work is done!

As a reading specialist I have previewed lots of resources and none of them come close to this treasure chest!! It contains mini-lessons galore orgainized by qualities (like 6-trait), genre focused, they build on each other, lessons are flexible, easy to understand...enough for a whole year of writing all in organized case.

WOW! Gotta have it!

I got this book for Christmas and I thought it would be step by step but it isnt that much, I would definetly recomend it for someone older.

Good basics.......1999-12-09

This primer is a nice introduction to some of the more basic calligraphy and lettering techniques. Hufton's emphasis is on good form, good practice techniques and understanding the underlying basics of letterforms, rather than just focusing on copying the strokes right. At the same time, the numerous illustrations and diagrams make it easy to move through. The illustrations of incorrect letters are especially helpful. The wide format of the book is nice as it stays open fairly easily (it would have been even better if it had been spiral bound.)

Her alphabets tend to be on the looser, more casual side, almost humorous. Many of them reminded me of lettering for signage. But taking cues from her helped me to make my own style a little less uptight.

The section on projects is good for showing the creative process, especially for showing that you don't have to get it perfect the first time.
