How The U.S. ALF Began..........2002-04-12

Before I read this book, I knew very little about the ALF (Animal Liberation Front). I assumed that they must have been a radical, "terrorist-like" organization. After reading this book, however, I gained a much greater understanding and appreciation for what the ALF is, and what they do for animals. This fast-paced book (I could hardly put it down!) tells the story of how ordinary people wanted to make a difference in the lives of many helpless and defenseless animals who have been imprisoned in our country's laboratories. I felt a deep connection to the founder of the American ALF, Valerie. She, and her associates (Josh, Bear, and Edna) are truly American heroes. They all had the courage to stand up to the many shameless institutions that support needless animal suffering. This book could change your life...

Only through respect for all creatures can we have true respect for ourselves. This book gave me a new insight into what goes on in the animal liberation front and in the labrotories. The people in this book are heros to the animals. I was glad that "Valorie" realized violent direct action was wrong and did not get involved with it. Sick people and even sicker books.......1999-12-29

Ingrid Newkirk is a crazy person with a lack of any value for human kind. The ALF is a terrist grope who bomb and hurt people in the name of animals. Its one big money making dream dreamed up by yours truly Ingrid Newkirk . They should lock them all up and through the key away ! Please check out some of the FBI reports about these people before you support them in buying there book..... This grope has been in the news for bombing labs and raiding animal farmers around the world. One of Ingrid Newkirk sayings is the life of an ant and that of a child has the same value. These are sick....sick people.

What you don't know can hurt other living creatures!.......1999-12-07

This book was an eye-opener for me. Seeing what goes on in labratories in the name of so-called science was unbelievable and heartwrenching. It angered me to learn that my tax-dollars pay for a large portion of this suffering.

You will be shocked when you read about the experiments, the animals' living conditions, the lack of medical care, and the pain and suffering these animals endure druing their short lives. And you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that a large portion of these experiments are USELESS when applied to human beings.

You will get up-close and personal with some of the members of the ALF. They're not rebels. They are normal people like you and I - yet they have unbelievable compassion and respect for all creatures. They are the voices for those that cannot speak.

As Alice Walker wrote "The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men"

The most amazing book I've ever read!!.......1999-03-20

Ingrid Newkirk's Free The Animals! really opened my eyes to the terrible cruelties forced upon animals in our society. I found myself laughing, crying, and even cheering for Valerie and all of the people who helped her. It's nice to know that there are people in the world today who will speak up for those who can't speak.

Ohio State fans will enjoy Menzer's descriptions of such Buckeye greats as Rex Kern, Chris Spielman, and Heisman winner Eddie George, among many others, along with his accounts of some great, and not-so-great, Ohio State teams in recent decades. Menzer explains how the game has changed in the years since Woody Hayes called the plays, and especially how the coaches themselves have had to change as concerns about off-the-field activities grew in importance. Words Should Mean Something.......2007-03-17

There must be a credibility factor when a person puts words to press; whether it's a doctoral thesis, newspaper feature or a book chronicling a moment in time.

The plagarism scandels thay hounded historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Srephen E. Ambrose shows the shortcuts even the most respected writers will take, seemingly with an arrogance that no person will question their false research.

It is unfortunate that Joe Menzer - who, for years, was considered an excellent sports reporter/columnist in northeast Ohio - has traded fact for fantasy in the opening pages of what potentially could have been an excellent history of nearly 40 years in Ohio State football.

The reader is allegedly in the locker room before the 2003 National Championship game with coach Jim Tressel and his squad. Tressel gives a stirring speech - actually, one for the ages.

The problem - let me rephrase this, the major problem - is the speech supposedly given by Tressel is from an Internet posting on a message board that was written by a fan.

Well, nowhere do I see Tressel saying, "And men, according to the fan....," while he gives his version of Knute Rockne's legendary, but equally bogus, "Win One for the Gipper."

After this fraudulent opener, the book is classic Menzer, as he tramples over the myths and rumors surrounding the program from the late 1960s teams of Woody Hayes to the triumph by Tressel's team in the Fiesta Bowl.

But I cannot pull myself away from that false start. Words should mean something and Menzer has placed himself in the same category of Kearns Goodwin & Ambrose; but for all the wrong reasons.

good read on the history of ohio state football.......2006-11-17

I bought this book last year with a Barnes and Noble gift card and immediately got into it. Now I myself am a huge sports enthusiast, especially when it comes to history. This is a good read on the history of ohio state football. Starting with the early days of the team and covering the bases on Paul Brown and Woody Hayes-coached teams that won national championships, the author does not fail to impress. The book came out right after Ohio State's national championship victory over Miami in the Tostitos Bowl, therefore the beginning talked about the win and how good it was for Tressel to bring a championship back to Columbus.

What really interested me was how John Cooper was disliked in Columbus, the main reason being that he did not take the rivalry with Michigan seriously. If you expect to succeed as a head coach, you must motivate yourself and prepare yourself for that big game at the end of the year that may have national title implications on the line. It's the best rivalry in all of college football, next to Notre Dame-USC, and this year will be no exception. Number 1 vs. number 2 will be watched by everybody who's somebody.

As a young girl growing up in Ohio--many suns ago--I still remember my three brothers, my father and multi-uncles arguing the pros and cons of good old Ohio State football! So when I saw this book on Amazon, I just HAD to get it.

Wow--what memories it brings back!

I now live in Silicon Valley, and out here in the Golden State, we're always rooting for the 49ers and the Raiders, with three-fourths of my large family being 49ers fans, the other quarter rooting for the Raiders. Imagine the fun we have!

Now that my memory has been refreshed on Ohio Buckeye Madness, I can now toss in a good old Ohio State football story. It's invigorating to be reminded of one's ROOTS! (pun intended)

Dishonest.......2005-09-15

This author is using information in the this book, specifically the "Pre-Game Speech", without the permisson of the original author and without crediting the author of this material. As the above reviewer notes, this "speech" was not actually given by Tressel, so the author is factually incorrect. As for the rest of the book, I have no idea, wouldn't buy because of the dishonesty in the first pages.

Everyone who is interested in Ohio State football will enjoy Buckeye Madness. This promises to be a good year for OSU. Buckeye Madness will give you the background you need to to enjoy the season fully.

Outstanding teaching resource.......2000-05-16

I found this book to be useful in getting across the ideas in Hamlet and Henry IV. The activities are directly related to understanding the text. Instructions are written out to the letter, and a number of outside resources are suggested. This has been one of the most useful aid I have used in teaching either play. The ideas are clear and inventive. My students responded positively to the activities that I used from this book and came away with a clear understanding of plot, characterization, and language.

The only negative comment I have is O'Brien can get a little flighty once and awhile. In truth, however, she gets to and stays with the point better in this book than in any of her others. I find myself going back to this text to supplement her others. She stretches a bit too far into the artistic than my taste allows, and I don't feel that she goes into enough detail in some parts of Hamlet, but these are things that are easily supplemented. Nevertheless, this book sets up the premise for teaching in a very effective way.

Once again, this is learning through movement and acting. No wallflowers or shrinking violets allowed.

A very good teaching resource........1999-02-17

I found in teaching Shakespeare that this book was very valuable. It allows the teacher to combine both drama and literature into one lesson. Students have a remarkable response to its techniques. They seem more interested and have longer retention of the material. The variety of exercises that are written out for you appeal to a number different kinds of learners; especially my resource students. I find the book a valuable aid either as supplemental material, or as a lesson planner in-and-of itself.

Timothy Botts' "Best-Loved Bible Verses" is listed as a 12 page hardback book. This is not the case! I ordered it, as I have purchased some of Botts' other books and really enjoyed them. I was surprised to find that the "book" is really "12 ready-to-frame prints in expressive calligraphy." While the calligraphy is lovely, it is not the gift book that I thought I was ordering.
