Book Description
For today’s shell-shocked individual investors, financial expert Charles B. Carlson offers hands-on advice on how to survive — and thrive — in a wildly fluctuating market.
The economic recession of the past year, followed by the tragedy of September 11, sent a ripple of panic through investors in 2001. The market shed trillions of dollars in wealth, and hundreds of thousands of individual investors suffered substantial financial losses. The volatility we experienced last year was more than a fluke, argues investment expert Charles B. Carlson. With the ongoing changes in the economy, including changes in corporate reporting laws, instant availability of financial information, and the ability to buy and sell stocks with the touch of a keystroke, volatility is here to stay.
But volatility isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, Carlson argues, if you know how to weather today stormy markets, investing in them can be very profitable.
In The Smart Investor’s Survival Guide, Carlson shows investors how to make volatility work to their advantage. First, he argues, it is critical that investors match their investment style — growth, value, buy and hold — to the kinds of stocks they pick. For long-term investors, Carlson recommends that a portion of their portfolio be invested in what he calls the calm eye of the storm, “easy hold” stocks that have consistent, steady growth, and very low volatility. Even in the terrible market downturn of 2000, when the Nasdaq lost 39 percent of its value and stocks like Lucent and Cisco saw their share price drop by 80 percent or more, a number of investment sectors actually gained in value. The Dow Jones index, minus its technology stocks, broke even. In other words, even in the worst markets, not every stock or sector goes down.
Through what he calls the nine essential laws of successful investing in a volatile market, Carlson reveals:
• How to diversify the portfolios across stock sectors and investment vehicles
• The critical importance of matching one’s investment style — value, growth, buy and hold — to the kinds of stocks one invests in
• The importance of “easy hold” — no-brainer stocks — in a portfolio, stocks that will grow 10 to12 percent a year with minimal
volatility.
Written by one of the most trusted names in the financial community, The Smart Investor’s Survival Guide shows investors how to master today’s turbulent markets, and profit from them.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, a compass to guide us through these markets!.......2002-03-26
Chuck Carlson knows how to weather these stormy markets. He explains why even the most appealing stocks may not be right for everyone's portfolio and shows in clear, well-written ways -- how to buy and hold and build a portfolio that will make profits in the up markets as well as these downturns we have all been hurt by.
Some of this book's strategies presented coincided with my own: start investing ASAP, dont confuse investing with trading, buy only stocks and stock mutual funds, invest every month, buy and hold. The book also warns you about the common mistakes investors make and how to avoid them. Ultimately, he shows through many examples that slow and steady wins the race....this book was a great investment...Im even buying copies for my friends in my investment club.
Must-read for the post 9/11 and post Enron investor!.......2002-03-26
As we have all sadly found out in the past 18 months, volatility is here to stay and the depressed markets of the past year have sent all of us personal investors into a tailspin.
Carlson's newest book argues that these markets are not a fluke but that the ongoing changes in the economy, including corporate layoffs and the instant access to information, is going to keep the market see-sawing for years to come.
His basic buy and hold strategy (then at the right time, buy some more) is not sexy but sound. Especially useful are Carlson's chapters on using asset and time diversification to ride out the downturns and his list of easy hold stocks that reduce the effects of volatility on your overall portfolio.
Bottom line: If you are tired of the talking heads on CNBC. If you feel like you need a sound investing plan that will provide security and profit for the long-term.....buy this book!

Book Description
Organizational semiotics offers a semiotic approach to the analysis and design of organizations, economic transactions and information systems. Semiotics studies signs, in the form of texts, documents, sign-based artefacts like information systems, and memes as relatively autonomous and persistent phenomena. These signs are studied in their relation to their author, their reader, the world they represent, and other signs. Well-known methods of organizational semiotics are, for instance, actor interaction analysis, actor task analysis, semantic analysis, and norm analysis.
The main topic of this book is the
Dynamics and Change in Organizations
. An organization is seen as a group of people that do not only share rules of language, customs, and habits, but also participate in the social construction of these rules. Organizational changes and dynamics are characterized by
-Problem solving within the context of bounded rationality, and propagation of adaptive patterns of behaviour in evolutionary time;
-Communication, existing of the exchange of object signs and norm signs, leading to the perturbation of self-organizing psychic and social systems;
-Creation and annihilation of social affordances (social constructs) and the norms attached to them;
-Actions, for instance communicative actions, and the creation of information systems and other artefacts;
-Creation, change, conversion and transfer of knowledge.
Based on the above, this volume is divided into parts dedicated to evolutionary and systems-theoretical approaches (one and two), behaviour-oriented approaches (two and three), and knowledge oriented approaches (five). These three parts roughly correspond to Andersen's distinction between a system-theoretical view of signs as systems, a sociological view of signs as behaviour, and a psychological view of signs as knowledge.

Book Description
A mouth-watering guide to more than 350 cheeses from every region of France, this definitive reference captures a vast array of savory fromages. Designed for both amateur enthusiasts and serious gourmets, this easy-to-use book enables readers to appreciate the flavors and the process of cheesemaking. Organized alphabetically, each cheese, its seasonal availability, regional origin, and properties are described concisely and clearly. Accompanying the entries are invaluable photographs of the cheese in its various states, both outward bulk and sliced through, for easy identification. In addition, every listing offers wine recommendations by international connoisseurs Robert and Isabelle Vifian, and includes tips for storing, serving, and sampling. To meet the needs of vacationing Epicureans who wish to truly taste the flavors of France, a detailed region-by-region listing of cheese producers, shops, and markets is featured. Additional chapters focus on the origins and history of French cheese, and follow the cheesemaking cycle throughout the year. A special glossary of French terminology related to cheese and its production is included. From recognizing more than a dozen blue cheeses to enjoying fromage frais, this book is an ideal quick reference to selecting and identifying French cheeses at home, in your local cheese shop, or, better yet, while traveling in France.
Customer Reviews:
For reference more than "reading".......2004-06-05
Living in France, I am always making the acquaintance of cheeses I had never before known existed. I always scurry to find this book, and look up the tasty morcel I've just consumed. It's great for learning the basics about various cheeses -- and, as noted by other reviewers -- the photos are divine, but it's not the sort of book one takes into the bath to pore over for hours at a time. Put it on your shelf next to your dictionary and thesaurus; it's that useful!
A great reference.......2004-03-05
As mentioned in previous reviews, this book does a great job of referencing hundreds of cheeses from France, providing photographs, descriptions, and wine recommendations. In these areas, it does a fantastic job. I've learned a lot reading it and I can't wait to take it with me on my next trip to France.
I wish the book gave more guidance on the tastes of the different cheeses and how you might select them. For example, if I like Brie and wanted to try a different nice mellow soft cheese, what might be recommended? This book isn't organized to help answer questions like that.
Overall, an important book for anybody serious about cheese.
WOW.......2003-03-04
I collect field guides and what attracts me to some is the clever layout and design. This volume is in a class by itself and unlike some guides, the text was so informative that i could not put it dowm.
Should receive 6 stars out of 5.
Cheese whiz..........2001-07-28
When I was a child and the milk soured, my ever-frugal mother would set it aside in a bowl and allow it to continue it's transformation into something wild and strange. When the curds and the whey separated, she would pour the contents into a cheese cloth stretched across a strainer and then gather and lift the cloth and squeeze the exess fluid from the curds. We ate the cheese as is...a form of "cottage" cheese I suppose. I was reminded of this when I read FRENCH CHEESES from Eyewitness Handbooks which contains a short history of cheese-making in the front section of the book.
I like this book, and since I am not a cheese expert, I cannot say whether it will make one an expert or not, but it has enlightened me a bit as I continue to experiment with the various kinds of cheeses available in the gourmet section of the grocery stores and the delicatesson in our neighborhood.
I have eaten various cheeses in Paris and other parts of Europe, and thought them better than anything I can buy in the States though I have eaten "fancy" cheeses in some upscale restaurants. I realize the French and others use unpasturized or raw milk in many of their cheeses and the U.S. frowns on the use of untreated milk so perhaps this is a factor. CHEESES identifies cooked versus raw versions.
However, many of the cheeses in this book are not found in U.S. stores because a limited supply exists and/or the product is consumed or sold locally. Generally these are artisanal cheeses (made by hand). CHEESES includes a map showing the farm areas of France and each cheese entry pinpoints the geographic location of the product. You can match the map with the cheese of interest to you and perhaps search for it on your next excursion to the French countryside. In the meantime, the list of producers in the appendix may prove helpful.
Wonderful photographs!.......2000-08-16
I am a big fan of this book since the publication of the original Japanese version titled 'Encyclopedia des Fromages (this includes cheeses from other 15 countries)'. 'French Cheeses' did not only closely follow the original text but also have added wine recommendations, which are very useful.Photographs are beatufifully printed in this version, too. The only problem I have is the large names of 'foreword writer' and 'consultant' on the cover (and the authors' names do not appear on the front). As far as I have compared the two versions, I have not encountered any differences in the text between them. So, what the consultant contributed? Are these 'big names' added because the publisher thought Japanese-written French cheese book would not look attractive? I want to hear from the publisher on this. Anyway, this is a great book for cheese lovers.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive and useful.......2003-06-18
I love cheese and I have always been curious to try new varieties, but I have never had the necessary information about the manufacturing process, different types, etc. to thoroughly enjoy and understand what I was eating.
So I was very pleased with this very good book about the cheeses of the world, which gives a detailed presentation organized by countries famous for their cheeses: France, Italy, England, Spain, Germany, Greece, Mexico, USA, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
Also, there is a lot of information about varieteis of cheese, how they are made, " secrets", how to combine them with wine, and how to make a perfect cheese plate.
It is meant for the ones who would like to get acquainted in this area, as well as for the 'cheese junkies' who want to know what else the world offers to taste. At the end there is a special chapter with cheese recipes for snacks, salads, pastries, desserts, a very interesting and inspiring chapter for cheese-based dishes.
There is only one suggestion I can make regarding this book: it would have been more interesting if each cheese denomination and description would have been accompanied by a map of the country and the location of the area where the cheese comes from.
Nevertheless, this is a great book that should be on every cheese-lovers shelf; every time you open it, you'll discover that there is something you haven't tried yet and you should.
Buy this book and take time to enjoy it!
Lovely but Limited.......2003-06-03
This book is very pretty, and does contain some interesting information, but I was disappointed by the amount of space given over to recipes, many of which are unappetizing, and some of which are just plain silly (why would I buy this big, gorgeous book just to learn how to make a cheese omelette or Welsh Rarebit -- broiled cheese on toast??? come on...) I was hoping for more of a true "Encyclopedia," but the entries for several of the countries were quite limited. I found that many of my favorite cheeses were missing, and some of the information was less than reliable (I was particularly dismayed by the book's claim that Alsatian Munster "is also produced in the USA, where it is known as Muenster" -- anyone who expects these two cheeses to be the same is in for a big disappointment). I will admit, the pictures are wonderful, but if you're looking for something truly encyclopedic in its scope and range, this book will be a let-down.
Cheese saves the day.......2002-12-04
Cheese has been something of a passion of mine for the last few decades and this incredible guide was recommended by my friend Antony, who is a professional cheese-cutter.
I has all the favourites here Stilton, Chedder, Parmigiano, etc. and quite a few that i have never heard before, like the goat's cheese Fern Britten, and yak's milk variety Jamieolivertwat derived from Mongolia. It makes one hungry just seeing the descriptions and yearn for a scratch and sniff version! enjoy!!
A very clear reference on cheese with excellent recipes........1999-04-12
My firm has had the pleasure of promoting some of the world's finest cheeses: Parmigiano-Reggiano, Stilton, and some excellent cheeses from Vermont. I have purchased many books on cheese and have tasted dozens of different cheeses. So you can imagine how pleased I was to find this book.
When I purchased it I was pleasantly surprised, as not all authors get the complete facts or seem to get their information from only one or two sources. However Juliet Harbutt has done her homework on this book. It clearly explains the cheesemaking process in a manner easily understood by almost anyone. She manages to bring some technical aspects, such as what happens to fat molecules during the cheesemaking process, to an understandable level. Ms Harbutt also gives clear descriptions of various cheeses from around the world.
In addition, Roz Denny has created some fabulous recipes to accompany the cheeses you will find in this book. Mouth watering photos, and the recipes are good, too!
There are several great books about cheese on the market. Some cover more cheeses, some are technical, but if you are serious about cheese this is one book that needs to be on your shelf. It will help round out your knowledge of this wonderful food.

Customer Reviews:
More insightful than other name books.......2007-09-22
I have long had a theory that the sounds we associate with our entire being are bound to have an effect on our personalities. This book explores that theme in a clear and engaging manner. The introduction is extremely interesting and thought-provoking, and will have you scanning through your past, mouthing names from your life and finding words similar to them, finding your own patterns. The name descriptions are often uncannily accurate and make a good deal of sense. I highly recommend this book to parents trying to select baby names, as well as to readers who want a better understanding of people and sound.
Much more accurate than I thought it would be!.......2007-01-13
When my wife brought this book home, to say the least, I was skeptical. In my way of thinking, to surmise that someone's personality could be some sort of derivative of that person's name, was, well, sort of "out there". I put this right up there with things like numerology, astrology and several other "ologies" that have little or no basis in fact.
But I digress. I must give credit where credit is due, and after searching the names of countless friends and family members, in SECRET UNIVERSE OF NAMES by Roy Feinson, I have to say that this book is about 90% accurate, about 90% of the time. Coincidence? You be the judge.
The layout of the book does leave something to be desired. Names are not listed alphabetically. Well, at least not completely. The names are listed via letter groupings. For example, if your name were Reba, Rob, Robby or Ruby, your name would be found under the letters "rb", but if your name were Robert, Roberta or Roberto, it would be found under "rbrt". Seems a bit discombobulated at first, but you'll soon find the method to the madness and won't have too much trouble navigating your way through the pages. And if you find yourself totally lost, there is a name index at the back that is helpful.
Though I did find the book to be rather accurate, it also leaves a lot of questions unanswered. For example, what happens if your parents named you Charles, but called you Charlie or Chuck, then later in life, you took the more professional and adult sounding given name? And yet, many of your childhood friends and family still call you Chuck? Do you now have multiple personalities? And just how concomitant can your parent's choice of spelling truly be to the development of your personality? Can your personality really be predicated on whether your parents chose to spell your name "Duane" over "Dewayne"? According to the book it is. My skepticism remains somewhat intact. Can the stringing together (or grouping as the author calls it) of varying consonants really have a determining effect on how we mature? Once again, according to Feinson, it will have a definite impact. And once again, you be the judge.
Nonetheless, this is an entertaining read that will enjoy, especially if you're into that sort of thing. And if you are planning a family, this could certainly add fuel to the debate over what to name your children!
What is in a name?.......2006-11-01
I found most of the descriptions to be correct in my own and the other names I looked up in this book. Makes for intersting reading. The book hooks you by appealing to your curiosity. Aren't we all a little fascinated with names? I mean a name is a pretty important thing!
I found the way in which the names are broken down and analyzed to be a little odd. But the system/research the author used to arrive at the interpretations given must work, because there was a lot of truth to each person's name that I looked up.
Fun coffee table type book.
Interesting Book.......2006-08-13
This book gives meaning to names based on letter order (essential vowels, and consonant sounds). It gives good reasoning for why a person's name would provoke certain biases or beliefs about a person due to common words with the same consonant or vowel sounds.
The book is easy to use and a vast source of information. The book is a great tool, and very different from other books on the market which typically are limited to telling the meaning and origin of names.
The only "con" I see in this book is that it only relates to what English speaking people would perceive about your name.
What an amazing book!.......2006-02-28
I was skeptical when I heard about this book and the next time I stopped at Borders I hunted it down and read it.
Just as everyone has said -- each name description was dead on. I couldn't believe it as I turned to the names of different people I knew and read about their personalities written right there on the page as if the author had known them. I was so thrilled that I went home and bought the book online (its cheaper on Amazon.com than it is in the store, btw, so don't waste your cash -- get it half price!)
And now I can't help but look up a person's name everytime I meet someone knew and see, as I get to know them, if the book is right. It seems so far that our names and the sounds they make really make us who we are.
In psychology it's common knowledge that people act the way they think people expect them to. Therefore, if you keep telling your children that they're bad, they will continue to act bad because that's what they think you expect of them and vice versa. This book will make you think twice about what you want to name your children!

The Secret Universe of Names... by Roy Feinson.......2005-09-16
It shows the power of influence that sounds have. This viewpoint of names and how they contribute to a person has been quite astounding. Thinking twice about which name to choose is the lesson I learned. Intriguing.

Book Description
This is the book that graphic designers have been waiting for. From the celebrated design team of Heller and Fili comes the first of Chronicle's Art Deco design books to be devoted exclusively to type. Garnered from vintage specimen sheets and type books as well as commercial design artifacts from all over the world, these alphabets illustrate how the artistic sensibility of the '20s and '30s extended to every facet of graphic design, including the typographer's art. Heller and Fili have brought together a breathtaking collection of wonderful typefaces that have lain hidden for decades to create an inspirational reference for designers and graphic artists everywhere.

An Excellent Resource...However,...........2003-02-02
This is an excellent entry in the terrific Heller/Fili series on Deco graphics, but it isn't strictly a book of fonts. Like the other books ("German Modern", "French Modern", "British Modern", "Italian Art Deco"), it is a collection of striking graphic images from the period, this time with an emphasis on characteristic lettering styles. Relatively few of the fonts are shown in a complete and therefore usable form, so this book is more of an inspiration and a reference tool than a directly applicable source of type. But it's an inspiration for sure, and has been very helpful to me in my work, and it's also simply a visual pleasure.
An excellent adition to the Chronicle Art Deco series!.......1998-10-07
Deco Type is a wonderful record of typography from the 1920's and 30's.Although it deals with mainly european type it shows a fantastic range within 'the style' that will also be recognizable and enjoyable to the American collector or historian.Until now the most valuble and informative source on Deco type that I have been able to find, a beautifully presented and un-misable book in my collection!
