5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Economics 101.......2001-06-06

This is a must book for anyone who thinks that our economic system and civilization can be improved and is looking for the way to accomplish this. This is a very thoughtful book that suggests that we create our economies. We need not be slaves to "the system." The authors challenge the philosophical basis for ideas popular today.

    Book Description

Many writers assume that employees will be as committed as managers to changing work organizations to meet the demands of global competition. Charles Boyd discusses reasons why many employees do not commit to these changes. He explains how an oversized menu of life choices complicates many people's lives, with profound changes in the family, government, organized religion, and education adding to many people's confusion. These problems cause employees to reject still more change at work, making it difficult for managers to get the commitment they need to the changes they must make. Boyd explores the reasons for the changes in personal lives and in our society's institutions. He offers ways managers can get the commitment they need for organizational change. The book opens with a thorough discussion of the forces making organizational change necessary. Boyd discusses the barriers to commitment inside and outside organizations that slow or block needed changes, and shows how managers can overcome these barriers. The book gives examples of organizations that gain commitment to change by using good compensation plans and by tying goals to employee achievement. Boyd discusses the importance of developing a more productive work force for global markets and how to do so. He concludes by describing the star organization, a type designed to meet employees' needs and today's changing economic demands. This book is an important guide for human resource managers, chief executive officers, and college and public libraries.

      Book Description

Coevolution—reciprocal evolutionary change in interacting species driven by natural selection—is one of the most important ecological and genetic processes organizing the earth's biodiversity: most plants and animals require coevolved interactions with other species to survive and reproduce. The Geographic Mosaic of Coevolution analyzes how the biology of species provides the raw material for long-term coevolution, evaluates how local coadaptation forms the basic module of coevolutionary change, and explores how the coevolutionary process reshapes locally coevolving interactions across the earth's constantly changing landscapes.

Picking up where his influential The Coevolutionary Process left off, John N. Thompson synthesizes the state of a rapidly developing science that integrates approaches from evolutionary ecology, population genetics, phylogeography, systematics, evolutionary biochemistry and physiology, and molecular biology. Using models, data, and hypotheses to develop a complete conceptual framework, Thompson also draws on examples from a wide range of taxa and environments, illustrating the expanding breadth and depth of research in coevolutionary biology.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful compendium of information.......2006-09-19

A superbly written text available at a super price. Sums up much of what is known and not known about the coevolutionary process. Does a great job at explaining the theory and critical importance of symbiotic interactions to understanding general ecology and evolution. Also summarizes most of what he wrote about in his earlier books on this subject. The chapters range from the population level to large geographical scales. Three entire chapters on "antagonists" and three entire chapters on "mutualists". Good balance of theory and empirical examples. [Yes, I am an ecologist!] Highly recommended...

4 out of 5 stars The Origin of Ecologies by Means of Natural Selection.......2006-01-13

We all know of examples of coevolution. The variety of flowering plants and their pollinators is a spectacular example. But this book looks at coevolution on a very small scale. For example, in parts of the Rocky Mountains where crossbill birds are the main eaters of the seeds of lodgepole pines, the cones have evolved mostly to defend against the birds and the birds' bills have evolved mostly to counter those defenses. This is coevolution. But there are also many regions in the Rockies where the primary eaters of pine seeds are squirrels or moths. In those regions those animals mostly shape the cones and the birds bills evolve accordingly. Such regional variations constitute the geographical mosaic of the title.

This book was written to convince researchers that the geographic mosaic of evolution is much more important than most evolution researchers recognize. It contains many, many examples such as the crossbills, and it states many general principles, which are often very similar to previous principles. It has none of the glamour or scope of, say, an account of the transition from fishes to land-dwelling animals. Instead, it is about how researchers study the working of evolution from generation to generation, and that is the level at which evolution actually works. I think anyone who is seriously interested in evolution should read one such book in his lifetime. This book is a good one because the examples aren't too technical. Be prepared to skim over some sections, and to decide which sections you can skim over without losing continuity.

It is also worth noting that, as in most academic writing, nothing is said in plain English if it can be expressed in jargon.

The last chapter deals with something entirely new in evolution: intelligent design. Humans are promoting some forms (through breeding and other forms of genetic engineering), demoting others (by pest control, antibiotics, et al.), and massively transforming environments (e.g. cities and farms). These present unique problems for evolution researchers because they are much faster than "natural" evolution. But they may well be the most important for the future of the species closest to our hearts.

          Book Description

Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) is a robust defence device protecting animals against repeated consumption of toxic food. It is characterised by the ability of many animals to learn to avoid certain substances by their sight, smell, or taste after experiencing an unpleasant or harmful reaction to them. CTA is encountered at all levels of evolution, with similar forms of food aversion learning found in vertebrate and invertebrate species whose ancestral lines diverged more than 500 million years ago. CTA has a number of unusual properties contrasting sharply with the basic assumptions of traditional learning theories, which has brought it increasingly to the attention of neurobiologists interested in neural plasticity. In CTA, the usual time parameters between stimulus and aversion are relaxed considerably, frequently with delays of hours rather than seconds. Moreover, the critical stage of CTA acquisition may proceed under deep anaesthesia incompatible with other forms of learning. In the past decade several pivotal discoveries have considerably avanced our understanding of the neural processes underlying CTA, and opened new possibilities for their analysis at the molecular and cellular levels. This book, written by three of the world's leading researchers in the subject, comprehensively reviews the current state of research into conditioned taste aversion. The first book of its kind to provide an up-to-date summary of research into the neuroanatomy, pharmacology, electrophysiology, and functional morphology of CTA, it will be welcomed by all researchers and graduate students in the field.

This book rocks. Willis Wegner watched the Cubs for a whole season and managed to tell a sane, hilarious story about what could have been. God I'm tired of the "loveable Cubbies" books. This one looks a bunch of bums square in the face and calls them out. Between now and the eventual Cubs world champion (circa 2038), this is the defining Cubs book you need to read. Bye?

              5 out of 5 stars A GREAT LOOK AT CUBS 2004 SEASON.......2006-04-15

THIS IS A STORY ABOUT THE DISAPPOINTING SEASON FOR THE CUBS OF 2004. THEY HAD HIGH HOPES THAT WERE CRUSHED AS USUSAL FOR THEIR FANS. THE TEAM WAS ON THE THRESHOLD OF GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES THE PREVIOUS SEASON, AND AS USUAL THEY BLEW IT. THE YEAR OF THE CUB WAS TO BE 2004. BUT AS YOU READ THIS BOOK, THE TEAM IS HIT WITH MANY INJURIES, A BAD BULLPEN, AND INCONSISTENCY. YET THEY STILL WON 89 GAMES AND WERE IN WILDCARD RACE GOING INTO THE LAST FEW GAMES OF THE SEASON. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING IN DETAIL WHAT TOOK PLACE AND WHY. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND SUGGEST IT FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS. WILL THE CUBS EVER MAKE IT THE WORLD SERIES? I CERTAINLY HOPE SO.

5 out of 5 stars BLUES is excellent.......2005-08-27

Hi all; I'm the Executive Director of the Old Timers' Baseball Association of Chicago as well as a board member of our local library and the guy who worked down the hall from BASEBALL DIGEST and INSIDE SPORTS; I kinda see a lot of this stuff. When it rocks, ya gotta share it.

BLUES is Chicago all-over perfection. If we have to keep suffering, you might as well throw it back at us in a great paperback and laugh. Wagner delivers. Well recommended!

              5 out of 5 stars A Comedy of Errors.......2005-03-24

I love baseball, but I've never been a huge follower of the Cubs. Still, a friend recommended this book to me, and I found it to be a real page-turner. I knew how it was going to end -- every Cubs season ends the same way -- but it was a fun read. Mr. Wagner did a great job of capturing the comedy and absurdity of the Cubs and their fans. I particularly liked his historical tidbits, such as his description of Wrigley Field. This is everything a sports book should be -- it's light, humorous and entertaining. The Cubs may never win, but at least Mr. Wagner produced a winning book about them.

              3 out of 5 stars Don't expect a Happy ending........2005-02-17

As a loyal life-long cubs fan who loves reading about his favorite team I have to say I was mildly disappointed in this book. The author did a good job in recreating the games but I felt that he lacked real access to the team. The quotes used in the book were all out of the newspaper or the internet. I wanted more substance. More behind the scenes stuff. There was plenty of drama off the field last year and it just seemed like the author glossed over it all. There were a few well written profiles included in the book. My favorite was about an elderly female fan who really loved the cubbies and went to as many games as she could despite her various maladies. I think Mr. Wagner made a bold choice in writing the book as the season unfolded as opposed to writing the book when the season was over. I just wish there had a been a happier ending.

This classic volume should find its place on every design student's bookshelf. Here is the history of the printed word, from the earliest alphabets through the evolution of the printing press. The contributions of the great printers and typographers are here. A new chapter by Robert Bringhurst takes up this history where Chappell put down his pen, covering the most recent developments in the printed word. Over 200 illustrations appear throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Best intro to the history of printing.......2004-08-09

Chappell and Bringhurst have put together an informative, enjoyable book on printed text. It starts with a brief history of writing in general, then of the Roman alphabet now used for most European languages. Along the way, we see a few hints about the history of page layout and other typographic concerns. The book devotes a few pages to the skilled craft of punch-cutting, of carving the steel stamps that represented the master copies from which metal type was replicated.

That just sets the stage, though. The next 250 pages or so cover the history of printed text in Europe and the New World. It's an amazing journey, filled with rich characters. Gutenberg was only one of those characters, and his bankruptcy played a surprising role in the spread of printing. Chappell followed through, era by era, until the start of photocomposition, somewhat after WWII. Bringhurst added the section on computer typesetting and all-electronic fonts, bringing the story quite up to date.

Bringhurst has done an elegant, seamless job of updating Chappell's original work. This is a posthumous collaboration that actually works, to my happy surprise. The book tells a coherent story in a very readable way, without bogging down in pedantic detail. The history of print can't really be told in just 300 pages, but this is an outstanding summary. It provides the framework and structure for the full story. Interested readers will look elsewhere to furnish the framework with detail, but will keep coming back to give context to those finer points.

With Bringhurst as collaborating author, you know that this book has to be a joy to read, both in its prose and in the structure of the physical book itself. I suggest it to anyone interested in typography, printing, or history in general.

              4 out of 5 stars a must read.......2003-06-19

The book is a great source of information. The 4 (not 5) stars is given cause the book is filled with postscript errors (missing letters, ligatures replaced by spaces, accented glyphs...). Disapointing for a book about typography.

              5 out of 5 stars What Historians Don't Know.......2000-07-14

Among graphic designers, one of the finest, most popular books in recent years is Robert Bringhurst's The Elements of Typographic Style (Hartley & Marks, 1992). In this book, Bringhurst revisits a classic history of typography, publication design and printing techniques that was originally produced in 1970 by Chappell (1904-1991), a book designer, illustrator and author who had studied with Rudolf Koch. Of eleven highly readable chapters, all were written by Chappell, with the exception of the last on "The Digital Revolution and the Close of the Twentieth Century." Why reissue Chappell's book? As Bringhurst explains in the preface, "He knew some of the things that historians know, but mostly he knew what historians don't know. I wanted the names and dates set straight, insofar as possible, and yet to hear the story told as Chappell told it, from a workbench rather than a keyboard, with silences in place of self-advertisements, and graver marks and acid stains in place of any footnotes." (Review copyright 2000 by Roy R. Behrens from Ballast Quarterly Review 15, No. 4, Summer.)

5 out of 5 stars Chappell's "Short History" is Lively and Thorough.......2000-06-19

A thoroughly enjoyable read on the people, places, and things that make up the history of type and publishing. Warren Chappell's book was revised and appended by noted author Robert Bringhurst and this book is the perfect complement to Bringhurst's own "Elements of Typographic Style". The content is alive with names, significant facts, technological contributions, and lots of good illustrations. This is an amazing book that is well-written and historically significant, and the authors fill in all of the gaps on the history of type and printing. The short history they describe is concise and thorough. The only disappointment is Bringhurst's final chapter on "The Digital Evolution and the Close of the Twentieth Century", where he completely overlooks the significant contributions of the people and technologies in the digital age and opts instead to explore the work of a few small private presses. Also, how can one brief summary chapter hope to describe the accomplishments of the last thirty years? Sadly, Bringhurst missed a real opportunity to provide a keen insight on the digital revolution and its impact on the printed word. All the same, this is a "must have" book for typographers, type designers, and typophiles.
