    Book Description

Students of management are nearly unanimous (as are managers themselves) in believing that the contemporary business corporation is in a period of dizzying change. This book represents the first time that leading experts in sociology, law, economics, and management studies have been assembled in one volume to explain the varying ways in which contemporary businesses are transforming themselves to respond to globalization, new technologies, workforce transformation, and legal change. Together their essays, whose focal point is an emerging network form of organization, bring order to the chaotic tumble of diagnoses, labels, and descriptions used to make sense of this changing world.

Following an introduction by the editor, the first three chapters--by Walter Powell, David Stark, and Eleanor Westney--report systematically on change in corporate structure, strategy, and governance in the United States and Western Europe, East Asia, and the former socialist world. They separate fact from fiction and established trend from extravagant extrapolation. This is followed by commentary on them: Reinier Kraakman affirms the durability of the corporate form; David Bryce and Jitendra Singh assess organizational change from an evolutionary perspective; Robert Gibbons considers the logic of relational contracting in firms; and Charles Tilly probes the deeper historical context in which firms operate. The result is a revealing portrait of the challenges that managers face at the dawn of the twenty-first century and of how the diverse responses to those challenges are changing the nature of business enterprise throughout the world.

        Book Description

With dryland areas accommodating approximately one billion people in over a hundred countries, there is obviously a problem of increased stress being placed on the natural resources of these areas, which ultimately contributes to overall land degradation. Coupled with this, many developing countries, particularly in Africa, are showing a fall in agricultural production per capita, with people migrating away from dryland areas; such relocation to marginal lands and forests or to already over-populated cities further enhances global land degradation. With this in mind, Social Aspects of Sustainable Dryland Management attempts to address the overall problem of land degradation and provides ways in which dryland productivity and viability can be increased and managed for future years. The volume bases its results on case studies and field research projects, and encourages a greater involvement of the local population in developing methods of management of their own natural resources. This volume therefore embodies a concept of development far beyond conventional methods. It aims to show that land management must develop around the priorities, needs and objectives of the people concerned and emphasises the need to involve local people in solving the problems of resource degradation, so that future research and modern technologies can be developed with their participation. Above all, it seeks to recognise the value of indigenous knowledge in sustainable development, so that such knowledge systems can become the starting point from which to plan management strategies and new technological adaptations.

        Book Description

Information regarding population status and abundance of rare species plays a key role in resource management decisions. Ideally, data should be collected using statistically sound sampling methods, but by their very nature, rare or elusive species pose a difficult sampling challenge.

Sampling Rare or Elusive Species describes the latest sampling designs and survey methods for reliably estimating occupancy, abundance, and other population parameters of rare, elusive, or otherwise hard-to-detect plants and animals. It offers a mixture of theory and application, with actual examples from terrestrial, aquatic, and marine habitats around the world.

Sampling Rare or Elusive Species is the first volume devoted entirely to this topic and provides natural resource professionals with a suite of innovative approaches to gathering population status and trend data. It represents an invaluable reference for natural resource professionals around the world, including fish and wildlife biologists, ecologists, biometricians, natural resource managers, and all others whose work or research involves rare or elusive species.

I usually work with very elusive animals like wild big cats, that's why I consider this book very useful and ilustrative if you are planning to work with rare species; in special the experimental desing section. Also the cited bibliography is a great tool to expand knowledge in this subjet. I really recomend it!!

4 out of 5 stars In Depth material.......2004-10-30

This book may not suit a beginner or first timer triathlete...but after saying that...there are wonderful bits and pieces that would be helpful. But reading it from beginning to end would be too detailed for those just wanting to get to the finish line (I recommend "triathlon 101").

I picked up so many details about VO2, anaerobic and aerobic conditioning. It is rare to find a book that can explain the process and why we should train with different methods.

The only area lacking is the workout section. I can not figure out how to design my own w.o. The workouts are not geared to sprints, olympic or ironman's...so should we all be doing the 3+ hour workouts regardless of what distance we are trying to accomplish? It is very unclear what is the optimum time and or distance. However, the intesity level for each w.o. is clearly explained.

I would recommend this book and maybe in the future Dave will come out with a new edition that clears up some of the confusion between pages 102-130.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Scott's Book has it ALL...........2004-07-15

When I first decided to start training for the Half-Ironman, I browsed through Amazon and ordered about 10 different books. This is absolutely one of my favorites.

Dave Scott has won 6 Ironman World Championships since winning one of the earliest Ironmans in 1980. Yet surprisingly, he is quite gracious about his wins.

"Triathlon Training" has individual chapters on swimming, cycling, and running techniques uniquely suited for the triathlete. It offers a year-round training program and workout schedules for 3, 4, 5, and 6-day training weeks with the most effective intensity, speed, and duration for each workout.

It covers nutrition and specific tips to get ready mentally for the race, preparing for transitions, and pacing yourself throughout the race.

Frankly, my goal is simply to finish the race. Regardless of my time, Dave Scott's techniques have already helped to prepare me for Hawaii. His attitude and motivation helps prepare you for Life 101 as well.

3 out of 5 stars Better books out there.......2001-10-30

In much of this book, there is a very strong emphasis on exactly what worked for Dave Scott. This wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, and in some cases isn't, but I find it more helpful to hear the coach's perspective as opposed to the athelete's perspective. The reason why this is important is because a coach will very often know the difficulties that wide ranges of people face during triathlon training while the athelete really only has to deal with his own challenges. The other thing to note is that the information is a little dated.

It did cover a lot of territory though... There are also some good gems that I found as well as an underlying emphasis: 'your training should as accurately as possible reflect your race'.

                    (My rating should be 3.5)

5 out of 5 stars Old, but good guide to triathlon training.......2001-01-28

Dave Scott's Triathlon Training is pretty old. However, it has a great deal of information that is as useful today as it was when it was written. This book covers all aspects of triathlon training: diet, weights, intensity, and of course running swimming and cycling. There is a huge amount of data in the book and on occasion it gets pretty technical. Also, my friend complained that the book does not really have any workouts designed. I like it better than books with workouts though, because it gives the triathlete at any level the tools needed to design a custom workout.

This is my favorite fitness book and will continue to dominate my endurance training program for the future. If you have any interest in the physiology and mechanics of triathlon then this is a great book.

                    5 out of 5 stars My Tri-Bible.......2000-06-08

Dave Scott beside doing triathlon best, can also write one heck of a book. This book covers all bases that any level of triathletes need. By buying this book, you buy Dave Scott's knowledge and also be motivated for a long time. I followed his advice and had done 3 triathlons this yr and itching for more.

2 out of 5 stars Old tech, but worth thinking about.......2003-02-04

Much of the content (only 24 pages!) is pretty dated with regard to the type of locks being bypassed, but the concepts are the same today. You can install the best lock in the world, but it has to be part of an overall installation that won't allow easy workarounds. It made me look at my home and cars with a fresh point of view and awareness of the ways to bypass the existing locks.

While other security books mention the need to be aware of bypass techniques, this book demonstrates many specific techniques and how they are used. Worth a few bucks as part of an overall security awareness.

                      1 out of 5 stars Too Amatuerish.......2000-04-26

I thought the book too amatuerish, even childish. It was written from the aspect of someone who knows just enough about locks to be dangerous. Some of the techniques just plain won't work or will damage something, though the author stresses caution to prevent such occurrences. If he really wants the reader to be cautious he should tell him to not try his methods.

                        Book Description

For centuries, Zen monks in Japan have used the traditions of ink painting and poetry to aid them in meditation and express their insights. Zen by the Brush offers modern readers a simple, quick, and fun way to relax with Zen art.

The full-color book contains an introduction to the basics of brush painting and Zen meditation. Along with Zen writings and Japanese-style sumi-e illustrations to inspire you, Zen by the Brush provides an enjoyable introduction to a meditative art and a means to practice the craft.

Zen by the Brush includes a special painting board and brush in a reusable storage case. Using plain water, readers paint their own sumi-e pictures. The ink-like image fades after a minute or two as it dries-simply part of the Zen practice of letting go.

                        5 out of 5 stars I don't know what the first person's problem is...........2005-05-21

I enjoyed mine. I mean, yeah, your not gonna unlock the mysteries of the universe with this little Zen book...but if you really expect instant enlightenment from a fun little kit that you got off the internet, then you are looking in the wrong place. Try a church, or temple or something....so yeah...don't buy this if you are looking for a life changing epiphany or some junk. It's more about fun. However, that's not to say it doesn't have it's depth. There were some things in there that made me think.

I enjoyed the painting thing that it comes with. I think that was the best part. It reminded me of when I used to play with water color paints when I was a young girl. It was fun, and yes, relaxing. I think it would make a fantastic gift!

                        1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-01-27

If more attention would have been paid to the quality of the components and less to the quality of the packaging, this would have truly been a satisfying purchase. The painting board which fades properly, unfortunately, leaves faint outlines of the previous drawings. In addition, the text of the book is, at best, a gloss of meditative themes. I returned my copy.
