Book Description
This volume explores the complex relationships among universities, states, and markets throughout the Americas in light of the growing influence of globalization. It offers a biting critique of neoliberal globalization and its anti-democratic elements. In seeking to challenge the hegemony of neoliberal globalization, the authors highlight the ways in which corporate capitalism, academic capitalism, and increased militarization—both in the form of terrorism and in the international war against terrorism—are directing societies and institutions.
Throughout this volume, the contributors—led by Noam Chomsky, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Raymond Morrow, Sheila Slaughter, and Atilio Boron—argue that neoliberal globalization has changed the context for academic work, research and development, science, and social responsibility at universities. They examine issues of access and social mobility, and argue that the recent push toward privatization limits the democratic and emancipatory possibilities of universities. Finally, the book explores various forms of resistance and discusses globalization in terms of social movements and global human rights.

Globalization and Higher Education.......2007-01-12
Finding resources for research in the area of globalization and higher education can be a difficult task. While there is a lot of information about higher education in various countries, this is usually referred to as international comparative work. The University, State, and Market: The Political Economy of Globalization in the Americas, edited by Robert A. Rhoads and Carlos Alberto Torres is a book that promotes the role of the university as as an agent of social transformation committed to a democratically negotiated definition of the public good. With contributions by Noam Chomsky and Sheila Slaughter, this compilation contains an important theoretical foundation that is necessary to approach this topic.

Book Description
This edited collection provides a comprehensive overview of the dynamics of contemporary natural resource based livelihoods and implications for their sustainability in the context of the Kalahari environment of southern Africa, a region subject to marked spatial and temporal natural variability. Each chapter is written by an active Kalahari researcher and addresses, from an environmental or a social perspective, the implications of different policies for rural livelihoods and coping strategies. In each chapter one or more of the key tenets of environment, policy and structural land use change provides the central element around which the sustainable livelihoods theme is considered. Although the focus of the book is the Kalahari, introductory and concluding chapters, in turn, contextualise the research and discuss key enviro-development issues which resonate across the individual chapters with relevance for wider global debates.

Book Description
The recent discoveries of 9000-12000 year old skeletal remains in the Americas have begun to change our understanding of who originally entered the Americas at the end of the last Ice Age. Discoveries such as Washington state's 'Kennewick Man', Brazil's 'Luzia', and Alaska's 'Prince of Wales Island Man' have challenged the archaeological and geological status quo. The First Americans explores these new discoveries by using racial classifications and micro-evolutionary techniques to better understand the complex relationships between the first Americans and living Native Indian groups.

Highly Recommended.......2006-06-03
This is the best book to read about the Origins of Native Americans, in my opinion. This book is loaded with up-to-date information and brand-new research. I don't agree with the author claim that "race is not a valid biological concept" but I still think everyone should read this book. Its worth the money.
Summary of the recent discoveries and the current theories.......2006-01-10
The commonly accepted story of the emergence of the Native Americans in North America presumes that they cambe across a 'Land Bridge' connecting Alaska to Russia during the last age some 11,000 to 13,000 years ago. In recent years additional evidence has turned up in the form of skeletons dating from 9,000 to 12,000 years ago.
This book analyzes all of these remains and presents the data from them to either support or contradict the prevailing theories. In addition new theories of racial classifications and microevolutionary techniques have been developed to further help in the further understanding of this aspect of early history.
Dr. Powell was the lead investigator for the ancient remains known as the Kennewick Man found in Washington State. This book represents the best current understanding of the origin of Native Americans.

Book Description
Life is often wild and woolly – literally – when you share your home with an ever-changing population of wild animals and birds. Just ask Linda Johns.
A successful full-time painter and sculptor, she has also opened her heart and the doors of her woodland home and studio in rural Nova Scotia to a constant stream of stray and wounded creatures – some of whom have moved in permanently.
In Wild and Woolly, Linda Johns records another year lived in harmony with the seasons and – not always harmoniously – with her many furred and feathered companions. Here again are some of the resident characters that readers will remember from For the Birds, but in addition to accounts of her feathered lodgers are stories of four-footed and furry personalities.
Here, among many others, are Edna, the mild-mannered rabbit with the bad habit of nibbling on the spines of books – especially those about Edvard Munch; Rogue, the blind kitten; Saffron, Rogue’s heat-loving sister, who found a new use for the kitchen toaster; Winner, the tiny, orphaned deer mouse with the fight in “Meadow Muffin”; the goats, Noa, Pat, Kamala, Alice, Poppy, and the aptly named Goatlips, who seldom met a gate he couldn’t open; and Ringo, the endearing baby raccoon with an insatiable appetite for Fig Newtons.
Rich with feeling, full of funny, affectionate, and touching stories – and once again enhanced throughout by Linda Johns’s black-and-white brush drawings – Wild and Woolly will delight those familiar with her earlier books and those who are reading her for the first time.

Excellent Guide to Structure Fishing.......2007-08-14
This book answers all the questions shallow water fishermen have regarding structure fishing. Shallow waters are popular with largemouth and its hard to tear yourself away from the shallows if you don't understand structure fishing. Bill explains how bass relate to stucture and the techniques he uses to catch them. After moving to Tennessee, I was stumped trying to catch bass in Tennessee's highland reservoirs. I thought it was impossible. Since reading Bill's book, I havn't landed any monsters, but I have increased my total weight at the scales and the size of the checks I've been cashing. Yes, you can apply Bill's approaches to bass fishing in your tournament fishing! This book is more like a text book written by a professor who has conducted numerous experiments and proven his theories. It is obvious that Bill contributed a great deal of his time to bass fishing and has aquired a great wealth of information. He shares this wealth, generously, in this book. Its not just for Southern California anglers. These techniques are applicable to structure that can be found in shallow lakes, on the lower end of probably all lakes, and even on ledges and points of large river run lakes. I wish I would have read this book fifteen years ago. Special thanks to Mrs. Murphy who handles distribution.
Amazed!.......2006-03-28
I bought this book in 1992 while living in Northern California and fishing tournaments. I was amazed that a fisherman would divulge all Bill put in this book. I don't believe he held anything back, well except photos and coordinates of all his key spots--yet he gives enough instruction you should be able to find them yourself. I found it extremely helpful and used the principles often.
I am quite sure Bill was not properly compensated with the treasure he has shared with us.
Recently returning to the San Diego area I will now be able to apply these gems on the home water.

One of the best. PERIOD!.......2001-06-29
If you are serious about bass fishing, this is a must have for your library. Bill knows what he is talking about. His explinations make sense and ring true. Does not rehash the same old cliches of other outdoor writers because he knows it and does it. Bill is a master at what he does and this book will make you a better fisherman if you pay even half attention to what he has to offer.
In pursuit of giant bass.......2001-01-17
Bill Murphy is the king of trophy bass fishing. I learned more about the art of trophy bass fishing from this book in one night than I had learned in 15 years of fanatical bass fishing.
Two experts, not one........1999-05-20
Murphy is the big bass stud, but Prorok is one heck of a fisherman himself. You're getting a trophy hunter's tactics expanded by a true student and aficionado.

I am a new student of calligraphy, and placement is an important aspect of design. This book is certainly a 'quick read', with only 60 pages, and half of those pages are only some examples of what the author thinks looks "good" or "better". Not how to layout a design, or how to measure to center your work.
Layout and Design for Calligraphers.......2003-10-01
As a teacher of calligraphy, I have used Alan Furber's book many times. He does a great, yet simple job of explaining basic graphic design and layout techniques, but from a calligraphic perspective. The book is filled with actual examples of everything he discusses. From thumbnails to full layouts, Alan gives the reader a "good" way and a "better" way to arrive at a finished piece. He covers many of the types of work that a calligrapher would be asked to letter. Because of its simplicity and imagery, I would highly recommend this book for beginning to semi-advanced calligraphers who are needing help with basic layout and design techniques.
