Book Description

In this book, based on the 1995 Ohlin Lectures, Deepak Lal provides an accessible, interdisciplinary account of the role of culture in shaping economic performance. Topics addressed include a possible future "clash of civilizations," the role of Asian values in the East Asian economic miracle, the cultural versus economic causes of social decay in the West, and whether modernization leads to Westernization. Lal makes an important distinction between material and cosmological beliefs, showing how both were initially shaped by factor endowments and how they have evolved in response to changing historical pressures in different civilizations.

Lal's first major theme is the interaction of factor endowments, culture, and politics in explaining modern intensive growth in the West. The other major theme is the role of individualism--an inadvertent legacy of the medieval Catholic Church--in promoting this growth, and the strange metamorphoses this has caused in both the West's cosmological beliefs and the interaction between "the West and the rest." Lal takes account of the relevant literature in history, anthropology, social psychology, evolutionary biology, neurology, and sociology, and the economic history of the regions and cultures that form Eurasia. An appendix shows how the stories Lal tells can be described by four formal economic models.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating but disjointed lectures on culture and growth.......2000-04-06

An expanded version of the Ohlin Memorial Lectures at the Stockholm School of Economics in 1995, "Unintended Consequences" reads like a book-length recipe. In the first chapter the ingredients are set forth, in the main body of the book they are mysteriously mixed, and at the end, out comes the cake. Just as the oven hides the baking process of the cake, most readers will not quite know how the book's conclusions were reached.

The author begins by setting forth the building blocks of a theory of long-run economic performance, without explicitly stating that theory. Although the lectures supply delightful reading on differences among civilizations the world over, comparing East and West, they lack a coherent theoretical underpinning.... The lectures ramble from one topic to another, each one fascinating in its own right, but without much integration.

In the first chapter (lecture), Lal sets forth two main building blocks of long-run economic performance: relative factor endowments and culture.... In the remaining lectures, the author leads us through explanations of the social and religious systems, the cosmological beliefs, the material factors, the politics, law, society, and economy of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Judea, India, China, and Islam, which he then contrasts with the West. The development of individualism is the key to the West's economic advantage over the other areas. However, he does not specifically say what caused the West to have this advantage. I was particularly disappointed here, because I believe I have set forth a theory to explain that development (in [my 1994 book] "Centuries of Economic Endeavor"), which would have been useful to Lal, but he makes no reference to it.

Lal explains the rise of individualism in the West largely through the evolution of Christianity, beginning with St. Augustine's "City of God." Shame and guilt are principal building blocks in the economies of the West. Those economies he contrasts with the dirigisme and ultimate reform in China and India. His references to the "miracle" economies of East Asia were apparently written before the East Asian financial collapse, which he did not foresee.

Although Lal refers to "unintended consequences" at various points in the book, the biggest unintended consequence is that individualism led to the welfare state. "But individualism has paradoxically undermined the very cement of the prosperous societies it created.... The growing failure of Western states to provide the most basic of public goodsguaranteeing their citizens' safetyis eroding their legitimacy, but it need not dissipate the economic vigor of the West" (p. 176).

In sum, this book constitutes a pleasurable window into the mind of a great thinker, who jumps from one theme to another as if they are all clear in his own mind. But the links may not be readily perceived by the ordinary intellectual.

              5 out of 5 stars Columbia Review High-Yield Biology.......2004-03-09

This book was extremely helpful in studying for the PCAT. It covers major ideas as well as small details of general biology. I made a 98 on the biology section of the PCAT the first time I took the test and this was the only biology book I studied. When I started studying this book I had not had biology in almost two years so I had a lot of brushing up to do and this book was an excellent source. I wasted my money and bought several other PCAT study guides which were useless. If I could do it all over again I would buy only the High Yield books.

2 out of 5 stars List of Facts.......2001-08-23

Although the material may be accurate and relevant to the topics found on the MCAT, it would be difficult to learn it from the format presented here. The text and explanation are extremely minimal, and the review questoins at the end of the book are far from excellent.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-06-23

Excellent review for the MCAT, although book covers more than one needs to know, it is very high-yield and an excellent reference especially for urgent questions. Unlike many other texts that just summarize college Biology textbooks, Bresnicks outlines the most important concepts and definitions. Just one word of caution: THIS IS NOT A TEXTBOOK, you cannot learn biology from scratch from that book, but it is an excelent review.

              Certainly a MUST HAVE book.

This text was essential in helping me teach our student athletic trainers. It was very well written and should be a model text for every sports medicine/athletic training program. The authors did an uot standing job. By far, the best athletic training text I have ever used.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overall Review of Sports Medicine.......2000-11-15

This text provides a good review of sports medicine and rehabilitation of common injuries for the medical professional. Very readable--a good start for those interested in musculoskeletal medicine and athletics. The chapters are well organized and well-referenced. I think this is one of the better sports medicine books available.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2003-10-30

This book seems to me slightly misnamed. If you're looking for a book that describes the hand(s) used in the Book of Kells (i.e. a book on paleography rather than calligraphy), this book isn't it. Let me 'splain.

When I first started learning the celtic hand, after some early exercises (from Margaret Shepherd's excellent book "Learn Calligraphy") I decided I'd follow historical precedent and learn more accurate Book of Kells hands. (This worked well for me in Gothic capitals, for example.) So I attempted to start by copying the Book of Kells hand; whereupon I ran into my first problem: the original had 3 different scribes with different styles. So, I picked one.

My results were disappointing. After doing my best to exactly copy the hand, I found my lettering looked less "Celtic" than typical Celtic writing! For, despite the fact that the Book of Kells is considered the prototypical example of celtic celligraphy, enigmatically the hands used in the Book are actually not very "Celtic looking", at least to my modern eyes.

Thus, I modified my style to be more "modern" - more like the style described in this book, in fact, which brings me back around to the book. This book gives a brief history of the Book of Kells and then uses the Book's hands as a starting point to develop a celtic script that is very nice. Many aspects of this hand were not used (or not used extensively) in the Book of Kells - for example, the angled upper serifs. But it is a very nice-looking (to me) hand, very celtic-looking, and truer to the Book of Kells hands than most other celtic calligraphy I've seen. Well worth the small price.

I run my own firm and have taken my share of lumps over the years. If I had read this book when first starting out it could have made things a lot easier. It's definitely worth reading, even if you think you have stable client relationships. Nice graphics too.

I had picked up this book out of necessity. There was a sticky situation brewing with my customer and I was in a state where I wasn't going to say I don't want any help. There are two types of books that managers can find in the bookshelves these days. One category is an academic treatise that comes up with a hypothesis and defends that hypothesis in great detail. The second one gets right down to business and shares the author's experience.

This book shines as one of the best I have seen in the second category. Several of the recommendations seem like common sense. However, if I'd gone alone and called on my commonsense, I would've spent several months to come up with this advice & might've missed some crucial steps.

The advantage of having this book by your side is that the thinking is already done for you. Someone made sure nothing falls through the cracks - so that you can concentrate on fixing that relationship.

                      Book Description

The public sector continues to play a strategic role across the world. The last thirty years have seen major shifts in approaches to public sector management in many different countries. There is also a fierce debate across academic disciplines about contemporary public adminstration/management: some advocate the use of more managerialist approaches; while others critique them. New functions have also arisen in the public sector, such as evaluation or management consulting, which require analysis. There is a renewed need for an analysis of contemporary public sector organisations, which are changing rapidly before our eyes. Thus it is time for an authoritative assessment of the major trends in public management, embracing both their intended and unintended effects. This Handbook brings together leading international scholars to comment on key current issues. The individual chapters include a mix of broad overviews, in depth exploration of particular thematic areas and analyses of different theoretical perspectives such as political science, management, sociology and economics. The authors have been given sufficient space to develop their distinctive arguments. The editors provide an overall concluding chapter. The Handbook combines scholarly rigour, engaging writing from senior authors and high policy relevance. It will be relevant to advanced students, researchers and reflective public sector practitioners.

                            Book Description

The Oxford Handbook of Economic Geography is the single most important statement of the scope and status of the vibrant interdisciplinary field of economic geography, bringing together more than forty leading economists and geographers from around the world. The volume relies upon acknowledged experts with outstanding international reputations, but also introduces readers to the academic stars of the future. It is devoted to the frontiers of the field, eschewing nostalgia for the past in favour of contributions relevant to the emerging global economy of the twenty-first century. From general statements about the history and evolution of the field to those concerning the crucial problems of economic geography, the rival theories and perspectives that have sustained its recent growth are covered in depth. As a consequence, the volume and its contributors are always provocative and challenging, and will define the terms of debate for the coming decade. The Handbook also focuses upon linkages, including those between the global and the local, between industry, location and trade, and between corporate strategy and market structure. Relevant to industrial organization theory, labour economics, and international trade theory, it is a testament to intellectual innovation. It argues for a broad view of the field of economic geography, situating the diversity of regions and places in the context of contending theoretical perspectives. The editors have outstanding reputations for original research at the boundaries of economics and geography. They have taught in leading US and European universities, and have contributed to significant debates about the theory of economic geography and its applications to public policy. They have assembled a formidable team of experts, unmatched by any other group. This is the most comprehensive and significant statement about the value and potential of economic geography in thirty years.

The Oxford Handbook of Strategy is a two-volume set on the key subject areas and issues currently under discussion in the field of strategy. It unites a team of contributors who are all authorities on the topic of their chapter. The handbook will be of considerable value to researchers, graduate students, and teachers whose interest in the subject area has advanced beyond that of the traditional textbooks, and to managers and consultants who seek an authoritative, accessible, and up-to-date discussion of the fundamentals of strategy. Volume One focuses on two major areas: first, the various different approaches to strategy, and secondly, the development of competitive or business unit strategy, where the pursuit of sustainable competitive advantage is the key objective. Volume Two looks at the challenges and choices for the corporation under four main headings: Corporate Strategy; International Strategy; Strategies of Organizational Change; and Strategic Flexibility and Uncertainty.
