          Book Description

How threatening are bites, stings, and poisons? What is the chemical composition of animal venom? How do the poisons work? What is the appropriate first aid or treatment? The author of Venomous and Poisonous Animals, a toxicologist at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Frankfurt, provides answers for everyone, from toxicologists to travelers. This book gives an introduction to the world of venomous and poisonous animals and how they use their venoms and poisons. It presents first aid measures and general rules for treating cases of envenoming or poisoning and offers recommendations to travelers, snorklers, and SCUBA divers for avoiding dangerous encounters with poisonous marine and land animals. Each chapter in Venomous and Poisonous Animals describes one representative animal, family or genus, covering its biology, venom apparatus, chemistry and mode of action of the toxic substances, symptoms of envenoming and poisoning, prevention and therapy.

          Book Description

Over the course of the twentieth century, the relationship between Americans and their domestic animals has changed dramatically. In the 1890s, pets were a luxury, horses were the primary mode of transport, and nearly half of all Americans lived or worked on farms. Today, the pet industry is a multibillion-dollar-a-year business, keeping horses has become an expensive hobby, and consumers buy milk and meat in pristine supermarkets. Veterinarians have been very much a part of these changes in human-animal relationships. Indeed, the development of their profession -- from horse doctor to medical scientist -- provides an important perspective on these significant transformations in America's social, cultural, and economic history.

In Valuing Animals, Susan D. Jones, trained as both veterinarian and historian, traces the rise of veterinary medicine and its impact on the often conflicting ways in which Americans have assessed the utility and worth of domesticated creatures. She first looks at how the eclipse of the horse by motorized vehicles in the early years of the century created a crisis for veterinary education, practice, and research. In response, veterinarians intensified their activities in making the livestock industry more sanitary and profitable. Beginning in the 1930s, veterinarians turned to the burgeoning number of house pets whose sentimental value to their owners translated into new market opportunities. Jones describes how vets overcame their initial doubts about the significance of this market and began devising new treatments and establishing appropriate standards of care, helping to create modern pet culture.

Americans today value domestic animals for reasons that typically combine exploitation and companionship. Both controversial and compelling, Valuing Animals uncovers the extent to which veterinary medicine has shaped -- and been shaped by -- this contradictory attitude.

5 out of 5 stars Dogs, Horses, Vets.......2004-04-29

For everyone who ever said they'd like to have been a veterinarian (and there are lots of us out there who've said that), this book is a must-read. It's a fascinating look at how the veterinary profesion has developed, and how veterinarians (like physicians) balance their financial interest in practicing medicine wtih their commitment to be healers. It's a thoughtful, readable, carefully researched book.

5 out of 5 stars important work on animal/human relations.......2003-01-29

This is a well researched and extremely readable book about animal/human relations in America since the late 1800s, with most of the focus on the twentieth century. There are good chapters on animal experimentation and the "antivivisection" movement, the replacement of horses as motive power on farms and in cities, the "dog heroes" of World War I who became movie and TV stars, and the rise of pet-keeping in America. The title refers to the values that human beings have placed on animals for different purposes--sometimes animals are valued only for what they can produce, and sometimes they're valued as companions or even family members. Jones doesn't write as an advocate, but she does make you think about these issues in new ways. Most historians only write about one species. This more expanded view is refreshing and fascinating.

I always knew that Jordan came across well in the media and had a lot to say about a lot of things, but this book makes him sound like a motivational genius. I counted more than 300 quotes in this book, some by others talking about Jordan, and it's incredible. This is a terrific coffee-table book and collector's item.

Vox does not take into account the many definitions that exist for Spanish terms in the Spanish speaking world. Obviously, the editor-writer categorizes all Spanish speakers as one when we are not. The Vox definition of curandero has only one word: quack. This is highly insulting to native Americans in the Spanish world. Curanderos are family counselors, faith healers, herbologists and nutritionists. They for the most part, cure with herbs. To be sure, some are quacks, opportunists, and are ineffective just as some doctors are. In the ancient world, they were called shamans. The one word for definition induces even the most egalitarian of us to shout racism.

4 out of 5 stars A Spring Board for Calligraphy Projects.......1998-05-08

This book is very comprehensive in approach. Many aspects of calligraphy are covered. From equipment and materials, from different scripts and inks, there is plenty of technical information there. But the best part of this book is the projects. They provide many outlets for you to use your calligraphy. Christmas Cards, Booklets and Dry Embossing are just a few mentioned. All are covered with colour step by step photographs. There is also a gallery of working calligraphers who use all kinds of styles to inspire you

This is a great book if you want to begin to expand the use of your calligraphy. It will provide suggestions for you to try. Other books, however, will have to provide details of what other projects in the same genre you could do.

The WTO Agreements are rewriting wholesale the rules of economic intercourse between countries. This detailed and intelligible guide is for those negotiators, trade policy officials, executives in industry and students of international economic relations and commercial diplomacy who need to understand the new multilateral framework for world trade.

4 out of 5 stars good explanation for non-economists.......2000-03-29

This book, a guide to the WTO agreements, gives a brief historical background of the framework that produced them, and also predecessor agreements whenever these are relevant for understanding the new provisions. The text explains technical terms in understandable language, giving examples whenever appropriate. The author, a fomer India's ambassador and Permanent Representative to GATT and Deputy Permanent Representative to UNCTAD, wrote it based on the materials prepared as the training modules for UNCTAD; so don't expect to find any critical view of the WTO agreements, but rather a concise explanation of them.

                                  Product Description

For the past three decades, a boom-bust cycle in capital flows has repeatedly plunged into crisis countries that had been growing rapidly. Are there feasible policy actions to curb this cycle and thus permit both investors and emerging markets to tap the benefits of capital mobility without the costs of crises? Williamson concludes that a significant reduction in the wild swings in capital flows is feasible, even though complete stability is not. The boom-bust problem cannot be tackled just, or even mainly, from the supply side but will require actions on the part of both creditors and debtors, including forward-looking provisioning by banks, retention of capital controls in some cases, and introduction of new financial instruments. The action program developed in this study is intended to facilitate financial maturity in emerging markets similar to that which has already occurred in the industrial countries.

                                      Book Description

The debate about the pros and cons of globalization has become increasingly polarized and yet the voices of the rural poor are seldom heard. This book rises above the fray to examine what is happening at the interface between globalization and producers in the South.

Based on extensive fieldwork from the sweeping grasslands of Patagonia to the coffee farms of Ecuador, the authors illustrate the practical obstacles that farmers face in accessing markets, above all, the difficulties of meeting market demands for large quantities of high quality produce in continuous supply. By focusing on eight different products- bananas, coffee, potatoes, coca, wine, sheep, forestry and the Andean grain quinoa- the impact of the global market developments upon smallholder farmers is richly described.

The authors draw lessons from both the success stories and the farmers' frustrated attempts to benefit from market opportunities. They point the way to the changes in policies and markets that are needed, and to practical interventions where development professionals can have a real impact. This book complements existing texts on the macro level of globalization to provide an accessible southern perspective on the debate.
