Book Description
Based on the author's widely used earlier text African Farm Management, this account updates the economic analysis of tropical agriculture and broadens its perspective to include examples from all parts of the developing world. Writing in a clear, concise style, Professor Upton explains the essential theories of farm economics without numerous mathematical formulae. The text is completely revised, with increased emphasis on farm household economics, in which farms are seen as consumers as well as producers. Also included is a new chapter on the economics of irrigated agriculture. This book provides an invaluable economic framework for better understanding the operation and management of farming systems in the tropics, and will be welcomed by students of tropical agriculture worldwide. From reviews of African Farm Management: "The author produces an authoritative text interlaced with many relevant and illustrative references." -- Experimental Agriculture

This is the most complete and original biological field guide in history. Lynn Margulis, one of the most brilliant biologists of the 20th century, and her colleague Karlene Schwartz provide a roller-skate tour of the whole world of living things, from the smallest bacteria in the hot springs of Yellowstone to the mightiest oak (humans too, but we are set firmly in our place). In his Foreword, Stephen Jay Gould says "If the originality comes before us partly as a 'picture book,' it should not be downgraded for that reason--for primates are visual animals, and the surest instruction in a myriad of unknown creatures must be a set of figures with concise instruction about their meaning--all done so admirably in this volume." --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
An all-inclusive catalogue of the world's living diversity, Five Kingdoms defines and describes the major divisions of nature's five great kingdoms-bacteria, protoctists, animals, fungi, and plants-using a modern classification scheme that is consistent with both the fossil record and molecular data. Generously illustrated and easy to follow, it not only allows students to sample the full range of life forms inhabiting our planet but to familiarize themselves with the taxonomic theories by which all organisms' origins and distinctive characteristics are traced and classified. This completely revised and updated third edition includes an introduction by Stephen Jay Gould.* New ideas on molecular systematics, symbiogenisis, and the place of microbes in the evolution of life* Newly expanded chapter openings that define each kingdom and place its members in context in time and space* Definitions of terms in the glossary and, now, also appropriately placed throughout the book* A new table comparing the main features of each kingdom, showing the logic of the overall classification scheme* A list of prehistoric dioramas in science museums and in U.S. national parks and monuments guiding readers to trips to the past* A list of websites directing students to additional information
Customer Reviews:
Yuck!.......2005-08-05
I bought this book based on ratings because I needed a book to help me classify animals into their correct group. This book is so boring and very confusing. The pictures of the organisims are nice but the way the book is presented in plain english "sucks".
Higher Classification and the Diversity of Living Things.......2005-03-20
While the higher classification of life seems sometimes to be undergoing almost monthly changes, Lynne Margulis et al. "Five Kingdoms," third edition is still the most detailed survey of the earth's biota. Her five kingdoms can be interpreted as six kingdoms (commonly the Archaea are separated from the other bacteria to form the sixth kingdom), or as over 30 kingdoms (if Carl Woese's system is used.) For practical purposes the six kingdom's concept seems reasonable to me, although specialists may prefer a more complex grouping and several "domains" of life.
That said, "Five Kingdoms" is a delight to read and a great introduction to the huge diversity of earth's complex biota. Each group is discussed in detail and a sampling of genera listed. Good black and white photographs and drawings illustrate each group discussed.
If you prefer the six kingdoms concept you can just split out the Archaea, but the other kingdoms are unchanged. If you like the multiple kingdoms concept, this is best discussed in Tudge's 2000 book "The Variety of Life." As can be readily seen, higher classification of living things is difficult primarily because of the complexity of mostly microscopic organisms and thus the general public will probably find the discussions tough going. The amateur and professional biologist, as well as the well-read layman, will be fascinated because the organisms, from radiolarians to elephants and diatoms to redwoods are so interesting in themselves.
In general I recommend this book to those who are interested in any phase of the biodiversity on our planet.
Lifeýs vast pageant.......2002-08-04
This book is a stunning compendium of the range of life forms found on our planet. Margulis and Schwartz describe it as "a catalog of the world's living diversity." It is a vividly descriptive assortment of selected examples from the Five Kingdoms of life formulated by R.H. Whittiker. The authors stress how much new knowledge, particularly in the study of unicellular life forms, has been gained in recent years. They explain how classification identifies organisms and show how modern techniques have led to the expansion of life's kingdoms from two to five. A description of prokaryotes and eucaryotes is given, followed by the body of 92 phyla descriptions. The book is arranged to be either studied as a reference or browsed as an introduction to biological forms. Each entry is carefully organized with the type of information [environment, measurement scales, diagrams] in a consistent location.
However, this is more than simply a collection of illustrative examples of various organisms. The most fascinating chapter relates the authors' proposal to modify one of the standard classifications of life - the Protoctists, replacing Whittiker's Protists. "The Kingdom Protoctista is defined by exclusion," they state. "Its members are neither animals, plants, fungi nor procaryotes." Their common characteristics are nucleated cells, some kind of flagellum and live in an oxygenated atmosphere [unlike many unicellular forms which cannot tolerate oxygen. Their argument contends that many multicellular forms are more
directly related to these unicellular forms than they are to other multi-celled organisms. The new classification "also solves the problem of blurred boundaries that arises if the unicellular organisms are assigned to the multicellular kingdoms." They list 27 phyla [of 36 total]with diagrams exhibiting a range of bizarre structures and life cycles.
Another noteworthy entry is Trichoplax adhaerens. Remember the name of this creature - "it is the simplest of animals." Composed of but a few thousand cells, it is a dull gray body just visible to the unaided eye. In looking at the photo and diagram of this creature invokes a sense of wonder - this is, after all, a distance relative living in the nearest aquarium with the shad.
This book is a delight to browse following one of the authors' intents. Their second purpose, using this book as a reference, is even more admirably met. Clear photographs coupled with excellent diagrams, including typical environments of the selected specimens, add visual support to a readable text base. Any reader interested in the way life is structured and seeking insights into evolutionary development would do well to consider this book. It's not an academic text, but conveys a wealth of meaningful information.
Surprisingly Fun.......2002-06-22
Although this is primarily intended to be an illustrated reference guide, it's a surprisingly fun one to thumb through. Part of that is the delight of looking at pictures and illustrations of some truly strange organisms (science fiction writers should really buy this book to see what genuinely alien creatures are like), but also due to the plethora of interesting facts.
I know that when I was reading through the section detailing the Animal phylla, I was struck by how many creatures -- entire phyllums -- get along without even rudimentary brains (or digestive systems, respiratory systems, circulatory systems, or even organs, altogether, in some cases). Likewise I was surprised to learn that only two phylla (including our own) ever developed winged flight.
The sections comprising the non-Animal kingdoms were of particular interest to me mainly for the simple reason that they invariably get little attention from most texts. At best, you'll usally find a chapter dealing with micro-organisms as a whole, and a brief chapter on plants. To see how much sheer diverity there is in just the Fungus kingdom is eye-opening.
I will note that the book does assume a basic level of biological literacy and that it sometimes throws jargon at the reader with little warning or explaination but, as a whole, this is a very accessible work and well worth having on one's shelf.
WOW-- it's all linked........2002-03-13
At first, a person like myself might seem somewhat hard to convince that all the 100's of thousands of species on the planet can be divided up into just five kingdoms or "Groups." However, by the half way mark I could not only see how this is true--more importantly I could understand--and agree with the author. What this truly gifted scientists has done is to "break down" the walls of convention and show people (even myself) how it all really worls. Lynn Margullis is the worthy sucessor to Charles Darwin. Period.

The Eastern Panther : Mystery Cat of the Appalachians.......2001-10-26
A very good book on the historical presence of North America's largest cat. Full of interesting anectdotes, photos and stories that brought the presence of this large cat to life for eastern North America. A very good read if you want to learn about this large cat, where it use to be found and why has it disapeared from our landscape.
An Important Cryptozoology Book!!.......1999-05-21
Parker's book is an absolute must for the eastern cougar researcher, searcher, and tracker. Parker details most efforts to discoverrecent data on the animals, reviews their history in America, and documents (through photos and text) examples of eastern panther taxidermy mounts found in museums and collections throughout the eastern section of the United States. To have all of this information in one place is worth the asking price of the book alone. Great job Mr. Parker! Loren Coleman, Coauthor

The Bravo! Wedding Organizer is what every bride needs to plan the perfect wedding.
Customer Reviews:
Best one out there.......2007-09-13
I've looked at bookstores and online for a good wedding book planner. This is the best one that I was able to find and love it. I wasn't looking for a bunch of inserts to read, just something where I could keep track of my information, add pages if I wanted to, and keep organized. I'm definitely a fan of this product and I love taking my book around with me. It's got everything that I need and let's me add protectors with my own pictures and information. Thanks, Mary Burton, for putting out the best wedding planner!!!
LOVE this planner!.......2007-04-21
I am in the first stages of wedding planning. I bought this book mainly because I have no clue what it entails to plan a bash for the big day. When I received this, I immediately noticed the perfect design of the book - elegant style, 3 ring binder, nice, large tabs to separate and organize.
Most of the pages inside are for "final" decisions. For example - there are pages for catering, cake, jewlery, etc....but no pages for comparisons of different vendors. Because I am in my first stages of wedding planning, I have several different vendors that I'm considering as of right now, and my only quirk with this book is that I don't have pages to fill out to compare and contrast different companies, reception halls, etc. However, I am fixing that by making copies of each page and making a page for each vendor I am considering, and when I make my final decision, those other pages will go to the back of the book.
This book also does not have any kind of pocket organization. In other words, there is no pocket or folder within in the binder to store brochures, pictures, or magazine cutouts. This fact doesn't bother me too much because one can always go to their local office supply store and buy some binder folders (this is a standard 3-ring binder after all, which makes for easy changes and easy additions.)
I couldn't recommend this book more! My friends already are impressed with how organized I am. My guest list is in the works, and I am using the planner's handy guest list form - with space to check if I've sent the invite, save-the-date, and thank you, also has space for how many adults and children have RSVP'd for each person/family.
I just love the ease of use that comes with this binder! If you are a bride just starting the planning process, you will not regret this purchase!
A Happy Bride!.......2007-02-08
I simply loved this planner. All the useful stuff and nothing unnecessary to clutter you already busy mind. I am not the most organized person, but thanks to this planner, even my future husband was impressed with the ease I planned our wedding in just three months (and we still hear from people how wonderful everything was). A great resource for any bride-to-be!
Great planner!.......2006-03-15
I got this planner for my sister. She absolutley loved it and used it for everything pertaining to her wedding.
Amazing! A must-have for any bride!!.......2006-01-03
After many hours of looking through all the wedding planners on the market, I chose the Bravo! Wedding Planner -- and I was not disappointed!! This organizer has everything a bride (and groom) needs to plan a wedding. I found the worksheets so helpful...And they doubled as contracts, which helped me on billing change from a vendor!! I would never have thought about having a vendor sign a contract if it were not for Bravo! The book is elegant and big enough to fit all of my samples, contracts and notes in.
Don't waste your time looking for another wedding planner -- THIS IS THE BEST ONE ON THE MARKET!
Book Description
For many a deep and lasting interest in Japanese culture, its people and its language, begins with a fascination for beautifully drawn characters produced by a master calligrapher. Compared with the squarish, regular representation of Chinese characters reproduced in books, newspapers, and
magazines by modern printing techniques, the appealing brush strokes of a handwritten Japanese scroll, letter, or menu is often considered a work of art, and associated with the aesthetic and mystical. Brush Writing is dedicated to such enthusiasts of Japanese calligraphy who have searched for a
basic and introductory guide in English to this traditional and challenging Eastern art.
Any learner of Japanese will almost certainly find this book an invaluable aid to writing kanji, a subject that is rarely dealt with. adequately in language textbooks, as well as providing fundamental clues to decipher handwritten Japanese. Through nearly fifty model characters, Brush Writing
teaches the basic techniques of writing almost any kanji. For each character, we have clearly shown the correct stroke order, major readings in romanized Japanese, and meanings in English. Advice on balance and other practical tips on writing kanji have also been included. Equally important to all
non-native learners of Japanese, this book explains the secret of writing attractive hiragana, the key, in fact, to ensuring that handwritten Japanese is clearly legible and leaving the impression that it was penned by an adult Japanese hand.
But it does not end there. Brush Writing is more than a kanji guide for students of the Japanese language. After working through the systematic instructions carefully explained in this volume, anyone, with an appreciation of the beauty and art of quality brush work, should find little difficulty in
creating fine calligraphy of their very own, even if the meanings of the shapes themselves remain a mystery. This volume begins with a comprehensive, but brief introduction to the history of Chinese and Japanese characters to satisfy the curiosity of the enthusiast. For novice calligraphers, not
only have we explained how to use the necessary materials and equipment, such as brushes, paper, and sumi ink, but we have also appended a list of stores selling calligraphic supplies throughout the United States.
For Japanese language students and aspiring calligraphers alike, Brush Writing is the perfect introduction to the art and technique of shodo, Japanese calligraphy.
Customer Reviews:
Good buy for beginners.......2005-11-10
Like the title promises, this is a good book for beginners. It has useful suggestions on how to begin and end the main strokes found in Shodo, as well as suggested kanji with how to write them and what they mean. I found it very helpful.
As promised: Basics for beginners.......2003-07-28
The title well describes the content. The focus is on the techniques with a short intro of the essential equipment. The reader is guided through a selection of some 50 characters with the emphasis on how to proceed stroke by stroke and how should the result look like.
This book is a good quick start but won't serve as a long-lasting reference. As soon as you find the art of shodou as the thing for you, you'll be looking for more in-depth and covering texts on the subject. Although somewhat narrow, all the content is useful - except a list of the equipment suppliers in the US.
Great for beginning students.......2000-05-02
This is a good book for beginning students learning to write Kanji and Hiragana. The large format makes it easy to see how to form the character correctly.
The instructions are excellent, showing you step-by-step, how to write each symbol in detail. Though cursive script is shown, it is smaller and detailed instructions for writing it are not given.
Each character's reading and meaning are shown as well. However, since less than 75 words are covered, it is not intended to teach you to read Japanese.
The book also covers materials, techniques, & a brief history of Asian calligraphy. There is a beautiful calligraphy appreciation section in the back. It shows some of the characters reflecting their meaning.
Good beginning brush technique book. Beautiful examples........1999-12-07
This is a good beginning book for learning brush technique for Japanese calligraphy of the pictographs that are based on the Chinese characters. She goes through everything from basic setup and rubbing ink through a couple dozen characters, so if you already know stroke order and have some idea of the characters you want to do, this book focuses on how to make the brush strokes for plain 'block' characters work, with some hint as to the possibilities with script characters and more artistic forms. There is a single page for how to form the phonetic characters as well.
The sample characters are big, bold, and easy to learn from and have the easier posture of a native calligrapher, rather than the squared-off posture of most American renderings.
It's a very good starting place for someone wishing to make characters with more personality than can be done with a normal pen or pencil. But is only a beginner's book if you already have some experience with a brush and ink.
