          Book Description

Major advances in our understanding of the history of life on Earth have been achieved through the study of exceptionally well-preserved fossil sites, known scientifically as fossil Lagerstätten. The examination of such sites provides a surprisingly complete picture of the evolution of ecosystems throughout the ages. In Evolution of Fossil Ecosystems, Paul A. Selden and John R. Nudds celebrate these unique and rare preserves of ancient ecosystems with succinct summaries of fourteen of the better-known fossil Lagerstätten—including the Ediacara in South Australia, the Hunsrück Slate in Germany, the Santana and Crato Formations in Brazil, and the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.

Beginning with a general introduction to fossil Lagerstätten, Evolution of Fossil Ecosystems goes on, chapter by chapter, to consider each fossil site, detailing its evolutionary position and significance; a brief history of the locality; its background sedimentology, stratigraphy, and paleoenvironment; its biota and paleoecology; and its commonalities with similar Lagerstätten. Considering deposits both marine and terrestrial, the book covers one fossil site from the Precambrian era, five sites from the Paleozoic era, five sites from the Mesozoic era, and three sites from the Cenozoic era.

Illustrated with hundreds of color photographs and drawings, Evolution of Fossil Ecosystems is a sophisticated yet accessible guide to these critical sites. Containing useful appendixes listing important museums, instructions on how to visit the fossil sites, and additional suggested reading, this book will attract students, academics, and professionals in paleontology, evolution, and the earth and life sciences, as well as dedicated amateurs interested in fossils and geology.

          3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-04-11

I had looked forward to receiving this book but was more than disappointed when it arrived. I have been fascinated with fossils for the last 68 years and own a large number of books on fossils - several on individual "Lagerstatten" sites.

The "Lagerstatten" fossil sites have always been of great interest to me as they preserve such a wonderful and complete window on the past.

I have hunted extensively in one of the sites listed - Pit 11 of Mazon creek were many soft bodied fossil creatures are preserved. I was lucky enough to find one unique specimen that resides in the Field Museum in Chicago.

I have two other books covering several "Lagerstatten" fossil sites and they are both quite interesting. The problem with this book is that there is so little on each site and the pictures are quite quite small. The "Tully Monster" from Pit 11 is unrecognizable unless you had held one of them in your hand and knew what they looked like.

The BIG plus for this book is that they cover several sites that are not listed in my other "Lagerstatten" books and the pictures are in color even though quite small and for that I am also most thankful. Expanding the number and size of pictures and expanding the text describing the material at each site would make this book worth 5 stars. I hope the authors decide to do just that in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and enjoyable!.......2005-09-15

I really enjoyed this book. Well-organized, beautifully illustrated. A great read for anyone who loves paleontology and geology.
Being an amateur, though, I can't but note that a glossary of terms would be very helpful.

            Book Description

Europe has changed greatly in terms of climate and environment in the past twenty million years. Once there were subtropical forests, but by the end of the Miocene, five million years ago, these had all gone. This unique book provides evidence for the past climatic history of Europe and the Mediterranean in relation to hominoid evolution. Many different lines of evidence are brought together including studies specifically on past climates and the application of climate modeling, the reconstruction of past geographical events, and the effects they had on European environments and the plants and animals living in them. Together these form a coherent and consistent image of environmental and climatic change in Europe from 18 to 1.6 million years ago, for all those interested in mammalian and human evolution.

                  Book Description

                  • Complete teaching tools that make teaching rhythmic gymnastics easy—even for those with little or no experience with the sport
                  • Developmentally appropriate skill instruction for fundamental movement experiences and five types of apparatus: balls, ropes, hoops, ribbons, and scarves
                  • Ready-to-use checklists, assessment guidelines, learning outcomes, lesson plans, and even routine-planning posters that you can enlarge on a copier and post in the gym
                  • Shows you how to use students' natural curiosity and enthusiasm to shape their movements into routines in fun ways

Rhythmic gymnastics offers a unique blend of music, movement, and apparatus that challenges students to discover their bodies' capabilities. The opportunities for movement are endless as children use their natural creativity and imagination to manipulate ribbons, balls, hoops, ropes, and scarves in fun and spectacular ways.

With Teaching Rhythmic Gymnastics, you don't need any specialized training to put together a developmentally appropriate program; this book leads you through the entire process. It's so easy to implement that once you've begun reading you'll be able to lead classes through the basics of rhythmic gymnastics from the very first day. This book has everything you need to get going:

                  • Practical ideas for making your own hand apparatus from everyday materials
                  • Lesson plan ideas and strategies for class management
                  • Activities that you can use to develop each of the movement elements: locomotion, jumps, leaps, balances, turns, and pivots
                  • Learning challenges for every fundamental movement using each apparatus
                  • Tips for selecting music, including basic information about tempo, rhythm, and beat

The book takes a developmental approach that places you, the teacher, in the role of facilitator, using themes, guided discovery, and problem solving to encourage students to work at their own ability levels. The students may work individually or in groups, which help them build teamwork, collaboration, and leadership skills. You can easily include special-needs populations by using simple equipment modifications or program adjustments. Plus, the book includes suggestions for tailoring a rhythmic gymnastics unit for older (secondary) students.

By providing open-ended movement tasks and challenges, you can use this program to guide children to self-discovery within their individual capabilities. After developing movement and spatial awareness, students get the opportunity to use apparatus and discover the fundamental movements and vocabulary along the way. To expand their learning, students refine and add to their movements through a series of learning challenges. The culmination of the learning process occurs when students combine their newly discovered skills into sequences and routines.

This open-ended approach and extensive illustrations make this resource easy to use. To make your job even easier, the book includes a variety of convenient and time-saving tools, including ready-to-use checklists, assessment guidelines, lesson plans, word searches for vocabulary development, and even routine-planning posters that you can enlarge on a copier and post in the gym.

Rhythmic gymnastics is an enjoyable sport that develops fitness, inspires creativity, and enables every child to work at his or her own level. With Teaching Rhythmic Gymnastics, you can add variety to your gymnastics and rhythmic units; start a rhythmic gymnastics club; or introduce a safe, enjoyable alternative to traditional gymnastics programs.

                  5 out of 5 stars A-1 Reference Guide.......2007-01-22

I have owned this book for some time and can say that it is very accurate in the information given. It is well written and the information seems to be well researched. This guide includes information on the stories of these locations, and directions as well as current info on the sites. If you really love to visit haunted places this book is well worth the money and time spent reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended Paranormal Reference.......2006-12-21

This book is easy to navigate, very informative, and well written. I really enjoy reading this book and; when I travel to an area, I reread the information about the ghosts there. I don't believe Haunted Places is 100% complete, but I still recommend it to anyone interested in the ghosts of the United States.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of places; very little info.......2006-12-18

This isn't a bad book at all. I just had a different idea of what it would include. If you are truly looking for a directory of places all across the country and you plan to do some traveling, this is your book. However, if you're like me and plan to do more reading than traveling, this isn't the book for you. It really, truly is a directory. Think phone book...it has the location names, addresses and a few sentences on the locations' haunted activity. If that's what you're looking for, buy this book. However, if you're looking for an enjoyable read - this one isn't it. Again, it really is a directory.

5 out of 5 stars Where to go to experience strange things first hand.......2005-10-17

This book is a state-by-stae guide to haunted sites: cemetaries, neighborhoods, houses, schools, historical sites - you name it, if it was ever reported as experiencing paranormal occurrences, it's listed here.

Each site is linked to at least one item in the bibliography (many to more than one) where additional info can be found. (The bibliography has more than 230 items.) Hauck gives detailed information himself on each site and then tells exactly where each can be found. It's a thorough reference tool for anybody interested in this kind of phenonoma.

Probably an updated version should be considered soon. This is such a valuable tool it would be sad to see it become outdated or not current.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2005-04-18

I bought this book over 5 years ago, and have read it cover to cover 7 times. It provides a State to State list of a bunch of hauntings. It even provides addresses, and directions at times. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is obsessed with the paranormal, and ghost hunting!

                      Book Description

One of the world's major forms of writing, Arabic script became widespread as a result of Islamic conquests of much of the world. The Koran places great importance on writing, and in the first verse of the holy book, reading and writing with the calamus, or reed pen, are praised as the source of all knowledge and all spiritual or scientific paths of change. For this reason the Islamic world is known for its reverence for books, as well as its love of writing. Eventually Arabic script gave rise to calligraphic art, which became an art form of astonishing beauty. More highly regarded than painting, Arabic calligraphy is approached aesthetically like music, with its own rules of composition, rhythm, and harmony.

This enlightening book helps us discover an alphabet that throughout the centuries has been linked to the secular and religious worlds of Islam. The text explains the history and meaning of each letter, as well as its philosophical, theological, and cultural significance, and 300 two-color and black-and-white pictures illustrate the letters, their variants, and calligraphic adaptations. An ideal book for linguists, graphic designers, and collectors of Islamic art, Arabic Script will also prove handy for travelers who wish to become familiar with the rudiments of the alphabet.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it ! (if you like Arabic).......2003-12-11

This is a really beautiful and informative book, a true collectable. Wish I had a first edition. If you love Annemarie Schimmel's books, you MUST buy this. It would be a great present for anyone interested in Arabic, and I haven't seen it in any of the Arabic bookstores.

                      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-04-19

I'm afraid I must start by saying I haven't read the English edition, but the Italian original. I approached it with high expectations, which were dashed.

Why did I find it disappointing? Perhaps I was expecting a bit more content; instead the book had the feel of a book thrown together to create a book. This is even more true of his companion volume, 'L'alfabeto ebreico'.

The illustrations seem too small to provide a useful guide to the caligrapher, and tend to concentrate - like to many books on Arabic calligraphy - on the illumination to the detriment of the calligraphy itself. The book also relies too heavily on Arabic typography, which isn't really the same as calligraphy, and which so often breaks the canons of calligraphy, with the result of seeming both ugly and hard to read.

I'd like to have know far more on the tradition of calligraphy and the calligraphers themselves; a more focused investigation of the styles used and how they've developed; a useful bibliography.

                      All in all, disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars An insight to Arabic culture through its calligraphy.......2002-01-05

This richly illustrated volume on Arabic calligraphy is truly a feast for the eyes. The book begins with a brief introduction on the evolution of the Arabic script from its pre-Islamic origins to its blossoming into the many calligraphic forms we see today. Examples of the script throughout its development are provided, from early Nabatean scripts to modern attempts at introducing capital letters. Particularly interesting is the letter from the prophet Muhammad to Mundar ibn Saui (the script used by Muhammad is a bit different than contemporary Arabic script). In the next section, each letter is individually given at least a two-page discourse on various calligraphic forms, the symbology associated with the letter, its current use, how the letter relates to the Qur'an, and pronunciation of the letter (e.g. the Arabic letter 'shin' is used as an abbreviation for path and to Sufi mystics 'shin' symbolizes personal destiny). The final section shows examples of texts, manuscripts, and other sources depicting the wide range of calligraphic styles. Examples include excerpts from Qur'ans, from medieval-era scientific treatises, from talismans, and from other sources dating from antiquity to the present. The glossary at the end of the book, though too brief, is quite helpful.

This book is more about the artistry that is inherent in the Arabic script rather than on teaching the reader how to write Arabic letters - and you don't need to know Arabic to fully appreciate the artistry. Khan's work will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone interested in Islamic art, culture, or the Arabic language.

                      5 out of 5 stars WOW !! What a great book..........2001-08-11

This book is well thought out. Extremely informative. It has lots and lots of pictures. The best part is for those of us who are trying to teach ourselves Arabic Calligraphy, and are somewhat limited in reading Arabic. The author gives full details on the calligraphy along with dates, english translation, etc. There is no guess work, the author assumes you don't have any Arabic so, if you don't have an arabic teacher, this is the book. Informative, easy to read and full, full of detailed information, the author was very generous with pictures.

I know you will enjoy it.

                      Definitely a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Covers both the history and meaning of each letter.......2001-07-06

Gabriel Mandel Khan's Arabic Script considers the styles, variants and adaptations of arabic script, covering both the history and meaning of each letter. A highly recommended pick for a specialized audience of college-level students in either language or art.
