Book Description
"Commodification" refers most explicitly to the activities of turning things into commodities and of commercializing that which is not commercial in essence. The mass marketing of pets, the rise of the coffin industry, the conversion of preacher into salesmen, and the globalization of Taleggio cheese are some of the exciting but surprising topics in this volume that show how friendship, death, spirituality, and artisanship all have a price after being commodified.
This unique collection of essays is a fascinating take on creating consumer products and consumer identities when what's for sale goes well beyond the thing itself. It will be a course-in-a-box for instructors who want to teach their students about commodification.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Primer to get started.......2007-02-26
I have started fishing more with my sons, so I thought it would be useful to buy a few books to make sure that I know the lingo, and do not make a fool of myself. Cliff Hauptman's books is a nice primer with lots of useful information. In it, he discusses the basic equipment and tackle needed, and various types of fish that are commonly sought. I found the information quite useful, and well worth the read. Some of the pictures and diagrams are not the best, but I felt more confident the next time I went out on the lake with my boys. Plus, we caught more fish, which is always nice.
If you are new to fishing, and looking for a quick read to get started, then I recommend this book. If you are more seasoned, this is probably not a great choice. Good luck, and see you at the lake.
Great book.......2006-07-06
I fished quite a bit growing up, but got away from it while in college. Recently I wanted to get back into it, so I needed some more grown-up gear. This book was quite valuable in helping me figure out what equipment I needed and what I didn't. The author's reccomendations of what lures to buy were especially helpful.
Still in print means something.......2006-03-20
I was searching for another fishing book when I saw that Cliff Hauptman was still in print. Even though I was not a total novice, I learned a lot from this book. And panfishermen should note that this is practically the only book that addresses crappies, bluegills and like that.
I'm now an occasional fisherman, doing my best on extended backpacking trips to extend my diet with trout. Lightweight tackle is not a topic Hauptmann gives any ink to, and if you want to actually clean that fish you just caught, Hauptman is silent (but check out Mark Bittman's _Fish_ for good graphics and how-to).
Others have citicised the "cheesy" photos in this book. I don't get it. All the photos seem to be of Chris Hauptman and his wife demonstrating pole-handling techniques described in immediately related text--what more could you ask? Even though I'm a side-arm caster, Hauptman knows his stuff and makes it clear.
Negatives: Another reviewer liked the drawings of various fish species mentioned in the text, but the one on the cover is all anyone needs.
Basic Freshwater Fishing.......2006-03-15
A good book for the beginning fisherman. I was disappointed that there was not more information on the presentation of the various artificial lures.
A must have for every begginer!.......2005-09-14
The book is written in a style that is friendly to a begginer. There are a couple of chapters which actually narrate the experience of a fishing expedition. Way helpful. The book is not in depth, but the title does say "BASIC". A great How-to book.

Fast but bent.......2007-09-26
This is a great book! It has really helped me out in my Ichthyology class. I got this book faster than I had expected but when it arrived one of the corners was very badly bent along with all the pages. I bought the book new and expected better quality.
Very useful keys.......2001-07-20
I have used this book in numerous fish surveys in Michigan, and have found the keys to be extremely useful, easy to use, and well illustrated. It and Scott & Crossman's "Freshwater Fishes of Canada" are almost the only fish ID books I use. A caveat - its broad geographic scope makes it less useful than regional keys, if they exist for your area.
Book Description
In this acclaimed work, the anthropologist Piers Vitebsky offers a unique account of the Eveny, nomads who live in intimate partnership with an extraordinary animal. For centuries reindeer have provided the Eveny with food, fur, transport, and spiritual sustenance, enabling them to survive in the world's coldest inhabited region, the Siberian taiga, where winter ice freezes six feet thick and the temperature drops to ninety-six degrees below zero.
The book presents a gallery of unforgettable personalities, including shamans, psychics, wolves, bears, dogs, Communist Party bosses, daredevil aviators, and the spirits of fires and rivers. Based on nearly two decades of fieldwork, The Reindeer People is an enthralling and moving testimony to a Siberian native people's humor and endurance at the ecological limits of human existence.
Customer Reviews:
I didn't know the Russians sent Reindeer to Alaska.......2007-08-15
I learned here that Reindeer herding for the commercial meat market has been a staple of Artic communities throughout the 20th Century (hence the effort to translpant it to Alaska in the 1920s).
This is an amazing story of a British anthropologist's 25+ years visiting and documenting the life of some of the last indigenous Siberian people to herd domestic reindeer. We meet many keenly individual men women and children, from the university-trained to the descendants of shamans. I was reminded of the Mongul family in the documenary movie "The Weeping Camel," and of Amundson's antarctic expeditions, which used native skills while Scott died using modern mechanical aids. We learn what it was like to live under Soviet rule (when labor camps drove the meat markets); we watch Perestroika as it affects both animals and people, and we witness the region's disastrous ecological and economic decline under Putin's Russia.
Anthropological Fieldwork at its Finest!.......2007-05-26
For someone who has only traveled so far as a few hundred miles in a sedan, my world is mind-numbingly small. Logistically, I rely on MapQuest to get me from "Point A" to "Point B"... and hopefully back in one piece. Without truly comprehending the land and life enveloping me in a "rural-suburban" town located somewhere in the cesspool of Bowash, I sorely needed a wake-up call to the raw emotion and spirit that has been inherently ingrained in the Eveny people, their reindeer, and their relationship to the expanses of Sakhan Siberia. As Vitebsky relives such experiences in The Reindeer People, his strikingly vivid account of living side-by-side with the Eveny not only intrigues, but brings to light the troubles faced by indigenous people that have been perpetuated by the Soviet era as well as its horrendous aftermath. Vitebsky's tale of the inevitable downfall of what was once a pristine way of life for these people offers a poignantly bittersweet glimpse of what is becoming all but history. Without a doubt, this is one of the greatest books to come my way in a long time!
Anthropology that reads like a novel........2006-03-17
Vitebsky's book is a wonderful look at the life, lives and living conditions in an area of the world most of us would consider uninhabitable. While it is an anthropological study, it overflows with human feelings and contact that make this a truly unforgettable read. This truly shows the need for humans to coexist with nature, not rule it.
Read this book.
Tungus life.......2005-12-29
I don't know where exactly to put this book - it is partly a memoir, a travelogue, an anthropological study for the lay reader...
Vitebsky spent a number of summers with different bands of Eveny, a Tungus tribe in mid Siberia. These Eveny were all associated with a 'State Farm', a Soviet era relic that regulates the use of the territory assigned to the bands, shipping of reindeer meat and antlers and bringing in supplies. The Farm was in this case controlled by an incompetent, alcoholic director and his cronies, who had been responsible for a number of disastrous decisions that had a big impact on the region as a whole.
Eveny have been hit hard by Soviet times and even harder in the chaos of the perestroika. They lost their shamans and the number of men willing to spend their winters herding reindeer in the forbidding sub sub zero taiga is decreasing, especially as the women refuse to leave the relative comfort of villages for the traditional nomadic way of life. As Vitebsky trails the herders on their annual migration, he is witnessing the impressive array of skills these people have to survive in one of the most inhospitable regions n this planet; slowly, as he is taken into their confidences, he also sees a part of their life that is hidden from the casual visitor. Although their shamans have all been killed, and the rituals all but stamped out, a number of folk 'superstitions' control all areas of Eveny life. Propitiating spirits of the land, dead ancestors, interpreting omens and dreams all play a central role in Eveny activity. There is a number of striking similarities with NA Indians in the relationship to the land, their respect of silence, mutual assistance and the non verbal communication that happens in that silence. Like the Indians, Eveny don't speak much, but when they do, the words mean something... like the Indians, the Eveny are getting destroyed by alcohol.
Vitebsky is mostly interested in social aspects of contemporary Eveny life - social tensions, alliances, intrigues and gossip. Given the tools he has he does a good job in bringing us a portrait of a native community deep in Siberia. Unlike what one might expect, his eveny are no ignorant herders - these guys have been around in schools, the military, they read astronomy, Wittgenstein and Mme Blavatsky and listen daily to radio Moscow; they seemed to be way better informed about the world situation than your average American (which doesn't say a lot).
Nevertheless, given its ambitious title, the book somehow does not deliver what it promises, at least it not for me. 'Living with animals and spirits' was missing something, i guess it was animals and spirits. Above all, Vitebsky is all too careful to approach these except through his informants. Now I also know why I am not an anthropologist. It would be very difficult for me to watch the State Farm director destroy people's lives without getting involved in some way; well, V. is an anthropologist and documents the disintegration that occurs with professional detachment. Still, there is good stuff in there and if you are interested in reindeer, this is the book to read.

Breeding Management made simple.......2003-05-20
I am a big fan of all the "Understanding" books by TheHorse, but this one is one of my favorites. There are great pictures and a through explanation of Natural as well as Artificial Insemination. It helped me pass a Breeding and Reproduction class, making all my cryptic notes so much clearer!

Owls of the World: Their Lives, Behavior and Survival
ASIN: 0715312235 |
Book Description
Owls are spectacular and fascinating birds, both in the wild and in captivity, with interest in keeping and breeding them rapidly increasing. The author shares her expertise, gained from a lifetimes experience of working with birds of prey, to give sound practical advice on how to care for these magnificent creatures, with chapters on housing and equipment, incubation and rearing, and training and flying owls.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite so understanding........2004-09-27
Having had a passion for Owls since I was a boy, it was only a matter of time (and the right amount of land) before I began keeping them. Initially, I learned a great deal from knowledgeable friends who's support continues. It wasn't long, however, before some of the well-meaning advice from one friend was being contradicted by another and occasionally I needed to consult a more expert source altogether.
I had already come across this author's name and a book with the title "Understanding Owls" seemed exactly what I needed. What a pity that the one message which comes across from this book - Loud and Clear, is that the Owl is not Miss Parry-Jones' favourite bird. In fact, I don't think she likes them at all. Having read the book and certain sections more than once, I am left thinking perhaps it is the author who needs to learn a little "understanding."
Commencing with a short section on taxonomy and where the Owl fits in to the overall scheme of things, we then find coverage of such subjects as biology, distribution/habitat, diet, feeding, reproduction, survival and status before coming on to the all-important topic of keeping them. It is here that the author tries to deter the would-be keeper by commencing with the subject of "Problems" and immediately exaggerates the noise owls create. After a page on "Giving a Home to Wild Disabled Birds" she summarises what she has written so far with the words "So what have we got? Owls are noisy, and generally not much fun just to watch in a pen; that leaves us with owls for breeding and flying." (Incidentally, the errors in punctuation and grammar are not mine).
So far, her own down-beat attitude towards these magnificent birds makes you wonder why she bothers keeping them at all. Furthermore, you could be forgiven for thinking she was being forced to write this book against her will.
All that said, those first 40 pages then prove to be nothing more than a rather poor introduction to what now becomes a fairly useful book. Whilst still encountering the anti-owl sentiment here and there, we are now treated to the well described and illustrated subjects of; Housing, breeding, management, incubation, rearing, training and hunting.
Sadly, just as we were beginning to smile, the author returns to a very down-beat message at the end under the heading "Hunting." The message here has nothing whatsoever to do with hunting or even what is involved, just a couple of anecdotes about problems experienced by other people coupled with the author's wish to put off the reader at all costs. A bit like "I've started (in this way) - so I'll finish (in this way)." Which is altogether a great pity because this book could have been so much better.

Fantastic.......2002-01-18
This book is truely great!! It has provided me with the vital information required to keep an Owl. The chapter on training the bird was most interesting and continues to be most useful!! I recommend this book to anyone seriously considering to going into Owls, you won't regret it!!
Understanding Owls - Boring? Or a hoot?.......2000-06-04
I purchased this title after reading her second book: "Understanding Birds of Prey"; and I found this to have been both an interesting and informative read. This book, lives up to, if not exceeds that high standard that her preceeding books have set. When I hope to purchase an owl of my own, this book will act as my bible! Her unique, if not aggressive, writing style makes other Birds of Prey authors seem almost lax in their approach to informing the reader. Well worth the money spent and allows one to make an informed decision regarding captive birds.
Book Description
Analysing Discourse is an accessible introduction to text and discourse analysis for all students and researchers seeking to use and investigate real language data.
Students and researchers in the social sciences, as well as language specialists, often discover that they cannot get as much from texts, conversations or research interviews as they would like because they are unsure exactly how to analyze these language materials. This book helps all students and researchers who rely on real language data to get the most out of their resources.
Drawing on a range of social theorists from Bourdieu to Habermas, as well as his own past research, Fairclough's book presents a form of language analysis with a consistently social perspective. His approach is illustrated by and investigated through a range of real texts, from political speeches and TV news reports to management consultancy reports and texts concerning globalization.
The book is an essential resource seeking to analyze real texts and discourse.
Customer Reviews:
Tuff stuff.......2007-05-14
I bought this book for use in a class on rhetoric. It is difficult reading, but if you stick with it, it can help to give you a new perspcetive on thinking about the discourse around you.
Very comprehensive and detailed guide for text analysis.......2006-11-07
After months of walking in circles, trying to find a guide for analysing texts and at the same time following Fairclough's views on critical discourse analysis, I found this one and bought it at once. It saved my life! You won't find the detail and specificity of this one in any other of Fairclough's works, which are mainly conclusive but not detailed when it comes to specific texts.
This book focuses on text analysis, which is a part of Fairclough's wider development for a methodology of social research, called critical discourse analysis (CDA).
Fairclough's argument for including detailed text analysis in his project, is that, contrary to a widely-spread tradition inspired by the works of Foucault, that mainly relies on social theory for analysing discourse, discourse analysts shouldn't be limited to the traditional ways of theoretical social research, but instead they should be able to oscillate between the analysis at an abstract, structural level (orders of discourse) and what happens in particular texts.
With the help of work from various authors, such as Pierre Bourdieu, L. Chouliaraki, A. Giddens, J. Habbermans, M. Hallyday, and many others, Fairclough develops the framework of detailed linguistic analysis of texts, explaining first that there are three types of expressing meaning: Action, Representation and Identities, which can be unfold respectively in terms of the different Genres, Discourses and Styles that are present on discourses.
The book addresses each one of these aspects, along with examples from texts of public domain (interviews, political discourses, advertisements), covering selected social research issues, such as discourse in new capitalism, governance, social structures, hegemony, legitimation, etc. In particular, fairclough shows how linguistic and grammatical features in particular texts account for evidence of the different purposes and constructed meanings, not easily spotted at first sight.
A good source for students and researches in language and discourse, interested in processes of meaning making and social construction.
