The Mystery of Economic Growth
ASIN: 0262012189 |
Book Description
Though competition occupies a prominent place in the history of economic thought, among economists today there is still a limited, and sometimes contradictory, understanding of its impact. In Competition and Growth, Philippe Aghion and Rachel Griffith offer the first serious attempt to provide a unified and coherent account of the effect competition policy and deregulated entry has on economic growth.
The book takes the form of a dialogue between an applied theorist calling on "Schumpeterian growth" models and a microeconometrician employing new techniques to gauge competition and entry. In each chapter, theoretical models are systematically confronted with empirical data, which either invalidates the models or suggests changes in the modeling strategy. Aghion and Griffith note a fundamental divorce between theorists and empiricists who previously worked on these questions. On one hand, existing models in industrial organization or new growth economics all predict a negative effect of competition on innovation and growth: namely, that competition is bad for growth because it reduces the monopoly rents that reward successful innovators. On the other hand, common wisdom and recent empirical studies point to a positive effect of competition on productivity growth. To reconcile theory and evidence, the authors distinguish between pre- and post-innovation rents, and propose that innovation may be a way to escape competition, an idea that they confront with microeconomic data. The book's detailed analysis should aid scholars and policy makers in understanding how the benefits of tougher competition can be achieved while at the same time mitigating the negative effects competition and imitation may have on some sectors or industries.

Highest Importance Empirical Studies with robust theory support.......2007-03-31
P. Aghion is one of the most important economists nowadays. With a solid background in mathematics, his studies are focused on relevant aspects of modern economics. One of this issues is the relationship between competition and innovation. There are microeconomic and macroeconomic issues to discuss. Traditional neoclassical economists are frequently naive when they try to link macroeconomy and innovation using the their oversimplified models. Exchange and interest rates behaviour are enough to prescribe policies that often lead to terrible results. One the other side, Heterodox economists always overestimate the importance of tacit knowledge and learning, without showing any concern with the link between development, education standarts and competition.
Aghion give us many clues about these complex issues. I strongly recommend this book (and endogenous growth theory too) to economists who want to improve their capacity to formulate viable and sound policies for sustainable development.

Book Description
The first comprehensive, international exploration of the environmental and economic costs and benefits of acridids (grasshoppers and locusts) both as essential ecological components and as serious grassland pests. Using a risk analysis approach to examine the ecological role of acridids and the effect of controlling these insects, the authors assess our current understanding of the grasshopper-grassland relationship. They also propose new directions for research and management in acridology and ecology that are consistent with developing a more economically productive and environmentally sustainable human presence on the world's grasslands. The integration of ecological, agricultural, economic, political and cultural perspectives brings into focus the enormous complexity of managing native insect populations in natural ecosystems. This general survey is supported by individual chapters devoted to particularly relevant and contemporary studies of grasshopper and locust ecology, pest management and conservation.

Why the Wild Things Are: Animals in the Lives of Children

Book Description
Our relationship with animals is complex and contradictory: we hunt, kill, and eat them, yet we also love, respect and protect them. This ambivalent relationship is further complicated by the fact that we attribute human emotions and intelligence to animals. We even go as far as likening them to children and treating them as family members. Drawing on a diverse range of case studies, this book attempts to unravel our intimate and fascinating link with the animal kingdom.

Long Distance Hiking on the Appalachian Trail: For the Older Adventurer

There is no greater pilgrimage for the die-hard outdoorsperson in the U.S. than hiking the 2,100-mile-long Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Pioneered in the 1920s and '30s by thousands of nature lovers who recognized the importance of setting aside land for outdoor recreation, the trail is one of America's most ambitious and impressive wilderness-preserving achievements. A Journey North is environmentalist Adrienne Hall's candid account of completing the grueling "thru-hike" (the hikers' term for the end-to-end trek), a feat more commonly accomplished by men.
A young woman brimming with idealism and ardor for the outdoors, Hall is nevertheless challenged to her core by the hardships of daily exposure to nature's elements. At the outset she naively imagines the trip as a six-month-long "date" with her boyfriend, Craig; that romantic notion is soon numbed by the duress of hiking 20 or more miles a day. They cheerfully begin their journey on February 15 at Georgia's Springer Mountain, each carrying backpacks overstuffed with provisions they would later abandon. While traversing the trail's 14 states, they battle snow, sleet, rain, mosquitoes, biting flies, and flooding rivers; endure the pains of blisters that can't heal and muscles, joints, and tendons weary from endless trudging; and adapt to a monotonous diet of dehydrated foods, Snickers bars, granola, and peanut butter. They cope with the miseries of stepping into frozen boots in the morning, going unwashed for days, and sleeping in cold, wet sleeping bags. Of course, there are uplifting moments, too, such as meeting fellow thru-hikers--characters named Seldom Seen, Otter, Nudeman, and Yard o'Beef--and "trail angels," folks who nourish and house the bedraggled travelers. Most importantly, there's the transcendent immersion in nature: waking up in the crisp mountain air, the hours of solitude and self-reflection, the sunsets, the satisfaction of subsisting close to the earth.
By the end of A Journey North, Hall has known both suffering and bliss. Her happiness peaks when Craig proposes marriage on Saddleback Mountain as they gaze on their final destination, Mount Katahdin, Maine. Throughout, Hill's narrative is vivid and insightful, ranging from honest acknowledgements of her doubts and fears to expositions on the environmental issues facing the Appalachians (and the world in general) to confessions of growing affection for Craig. While prone to descending into cliché, Hall's acute awareness of nature's endangerment is authentic and inspiring, and her awakening to both her emotional and physical strength as a woman is poignant. This book will be invaluable to anyone considering a journey north, or south, of their own. --Rebecca Wright
Book Description
"Hiking 2,159 miles from Georgia to Maine was not my idea...I was not a lost youth searching for an identity. I was not retired and looking for a new way to spend my time. I was not sorting through death or divorce. I was not recently fired from a job. The truth is, my boyfriend asked me on a date." So begins the story of one young woman's journey along the legendary Appalachian Trail. What starts as a date turns into the experience of a lifetime as Adrienne Hall faces blinding snowstorms, flooded rivers, and seemingly endless mountaintops. Yet despite the physical and mental hardships, she finds her commitment to her hiking companion and the AT experience growing with every mile. When she emerges from her trip - a million footsteps, countless candy bars, and one engagement proposal later - Adrienne has lived an adventure that few will ever know. Written with warmth, insight, and a keen sense of observation, A Journey North is a personal story about discovering what it means to hike the amazing corridor of wilderness that is the Appalachian Trail.
Customer Reviews:
Nice story, if you skip the preachy sections.......2007-05-04
I enjoyed reading Adrienne Hall's story about thru-hiking the AT, especially because so few women complete such a journey. I began by reading every word she wrote, but about halfway through the book got so depressed at her scientific reality checks about salamanders, wolves, bald mountains, and all the many wild things threatened by human encroachment, pollution, etc., that I began to skip these sections (there's only so much guilt you can feel and continue with your everyday existence) to find out if they made it all the way to Katahdin. Wish there were more details of her current life and how the trail changed her, but it doesn't detract from the story to leave these facts to the imagination. A good read, especially for AT afficionados, but don't expect miracles beyond two people walking 2,135 miles through wilderness without killing each other. Which, in and of itself, is pretty miraculous.
I'm an environmentalist too, but............2007-02-13
I normally greatly enjoy reading accounts of women hiking the Appalachian Trail. Hikers telling their own story don't just tell about the trail, they tell about themselves. Often they have a very unique personality and it is interesting to get to know them. In this case, not so much. The author of this book, Adrienne Hall, is very young, and her interests and personality are those of a self-important high school girl (think Meadow Soprano from the HBO series). She writes very long passages about the environment that are very preachy and sanctimonious. She writes a lot about her boyfriend and what other people should do about the environment, and not so much about how the trail helped her grow as a person. This is one of the very few Appalachian Trail books I have read where I found myself struggling to stick with reading, frequently skipping pages.
For your pleasure from her side..........2006-12-27
(12/27/06) Looking for a book about facts on hiking the trail, then maybe this isn't quite the book for you. However, if you do enjoy reading accounts of experiences during the hike, then this might be a read for you. The story is an account of the author, Adrienne's experience in hiking the trail, as a last minute decision to join her boyfriend.
The story spreads off onto Adrienne's views on some of the ecology of the App. Trail. There are stories of environmental issues woven in to her accounts of her hike with her boyfriend and his dog. The book is her account and is entertaining and at times emotional.
This is certainly not a "best of hikes" recommendation book, or a "how-to" guide, but a wonderfully written account of one's personal reflections of the trail. 3.5 out of 5 stars
update 6/18/07: I have picked this up for the rereading adventure. In my humble opinion, this is one of the best [female] accounts of a hike on the Appalachian Trail.
Adrienne Hall was not a novice backpacker, when starting this Trail. Her first hike was around age 11, but she was not all that thrilled taking the 2100 plus mile hike. She decided to go when her then boyfriend asked her on a "date". Adrienne writes about their hike together and how this turned into a journey of a Woman on the trail.
There are stories about heavy rains, mosquito bites, rivers running over and unexpected snow; most stories center around environmental issues. But throughout the pages, the underlying story of Adrienne's commitment to her hike and her partner show growth with every step.
This book is well written and enjoyable. Ms. Hall's attention to detail derives from the amount of time she spent observing the wild surrounding her during her trip.
4.5 stars
Not a story of hiking the AT..........2006-07-17
I have to admit to being disappointed with this book. I expected (and wanted) to read an account of Adrienne Hall's AT thruhike. Instead this book reads more like a collection of essays done for a college course that have the AT as their main theme. As an example, pages and paged were dedicated to the acid rain problem and the extinction of salamanders in the Great Smoky Mountains, and then a paragraph would be dedicated to their actual hike through the same region. Don't get me wrong, the essays seemed very well researched, but that is not what I wanted.
There was very little info on the day-to-day issues that an AT hiker deals with, plus when she did talk about the hike, it was mostly a lot of complaints... too cold, too much rain, too many bugs, and most of all too many people. I got the feeling that she forced herself to do the hike and then after decided that maybe it wasn't so bad. She kept mentioning that she wished she had spent more time on the trail appreciating the hiking life more. For most people, the chance to do a thruhike is a dream come true, for Adrienne it seems to be just something to do because she knows she is stubborn enough to go the whole way. For me, that is the wrong reason and it made the book tough to enjoy.
For a much better account of trail life, I suggest Robert Rubin's "On the Beaten Path" or Kelly Winter's "Walking Home."
Two books in one is problematic.......2005-07-08
I enjoy most books about thru hiking the Appalchian Trail and this was no exception. It held my interest enough to read it through on a six-hour airplane trip without once putting it down. It is better written than many other trail tales and one grows to like the author. However, there is a major problem with Hall's narrative: she can't stick to the subject. This is the reason the book somewhat misses the mark.
When I purchase a hiking book, particularly one about a six-month AT trek, I expect to read about just this: the hiking. Hall commits the egregious sin of weaving in and out of the narrative long-winded treatises on environmental issues. While I agree completely with her liberal philosophy on the environment, I don't want the look littered with this every few pages. It breaks up the rhythm and becomes increasingly frustrating. In one paragraph she'll be describing the verdant forests of New Hampshire and in the next she'll be off on a diatribe against Ronald Reagan. I can only shudder at what Hall would think of the environmental Neaderthal, George W. Bush, but he hadn't entered office yet when this book was penned. One fervently wishes he had never entered office at all...
Adrienne would have been successful had she followed Sergeant Joe Friday's advice and offered "just the facts, Ma'am." Tell the reader about the rigors of trail life, lack of food and sleep, trail angels and bugs. Save the (valuable) environmental advice for another book, or at the very least keep in for an appendix at the conclusion of the book.
Another criticism I have is the constant gushing over fiancee, Craig. She doesn't say whether she ever married this man or not, but the over-the-top mooning over him grated on the nerves. He seemed like a loveable teddy bear of a guy, but enough is enough. Other reviewers have begrudged her supposed "whining," but I didn't notice much of that. If you want to read whining taken to a high art in AT literature, check out Blaney and Ullyart's book "A Journey of Friendship" for the most nauseating, childish complaining known to mortal man. Much of Hall's displeasure could easily have been avoided had she not made the inexplicable decision to begin hiking from Springer Mtn. in early February!! What was she thinking?
I recommend Hall's book, but be forwarned about its tendency to meander and not stick to the subject at hand. Aside from these few criticisms, the book belongs on the shelf of any real or vicarious AT enthusiast.
