Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, ridiculous price.......2006-02-12
I got this book and a copy of another book by Michael Rosenberg "Exchange Rate Determination". The contents of these two books is exactly the same. Same topics covered in both books. I made the mistake of purchsing both when I should have only bought Exchange Rate Determination which is priced more decently than the out-of-print version. These used book resellers are selling the Currency forecasting book at a non-sense exorbitant price.
Currency Forecasting.......2000-09-27
This is a great book! Rosenberg has succeeded in making a dry and complicated topic, foreign exchange, both interesting and understandable. The chapter on intervention is especially timely and enlightening. Rosenberg is rated tops in his field by professional fx traders and portfolio managers, yet he has succeeded in writing a book that is both useful and interesting to both professionals and nonprofessionals. This is a must read for anyone involved in international markets.

Book Description
Wild emmer is the progenitor of most cultivated wheats and thus an important source of wheat improvement. This book draws the results from multidisciplinary studies on the ecological, genetic, genomic, agronomic, and evolutionary aspects of wild emmer, conducted at many labs around the world.
It is divided into the following parts: Origin and Evolution of Wheat - Population Genetics of Wild Emmer Wheat at the Protein and DNA Levels - Genetic Resources of Wild Emmer for Wheat Improvement - Genome Organization and Genetic Mapping - Conclusions and Prospects.
The authors describe the evolution of wild emmer as a model organism of a selfer in evolutionary biology, and its rich potential genetic resources for wheat improvement.
Book Description
Species diversity is marked by some interesting facts--such as larger areas have more species, and diversity is particularly high near the equator. Other factors to consider are what reduces diversity in ecologically productive places and across what scales of space and time diversity patterns hold. This book examines these questions and many others, the author employing both theory and data in his search for answers. Surprisingly, many of the questions have reasonably likely answers. By identifying these, attention can be turned toward life's many still-unexplained diversity patterns. As evolutionary ecologists race to understand biodiversity before it is too late, this book will help set the agenda for diversity research into the next century and will be useful to graduate students and researchers in ecology and evolutionary and conservation biology.
Customer Reviews:
Great explanations of species diversity.......2004-07-28
My graduate advisor recommended this book and I'm getting a copy for myself. It is full of useful, clear-cut information about the complexities that create the diversity we see everywhere within the natural world. It is easy to read, almost conversational, with numerous examples from all areas of ecological research. There are many graphs to visually explain the patterns described and not too many difficult, complex formulas (only the necessary ones).
Diversity described by who knows.......2001-01-21
This work matches with my thesis, describing diversity in all aspects along a gradient of space and time. It's a great review of some theories and thoughts.
Seral and evolutionary consideration well interwoven.......2000-06-29
Some chapter titles: Patterns in Space; Patterns in Time; Dimensionless patterns (body size, food chain patterns); Speciation; Extinction; Species-Area Curves; Energy Flow and Diversity
I have used this work as a foundation for simulation modeling of biodiversity in seral and evolutionary time frames. It's intended as a textbook, though knowledgeable lay people will find its richness rewarding.
Book Description
Illustrative examples from recent research publications and "classic" studies are prominently featured throughout the book.
Research techniques are highlighted in "special interest" boxes. Illustrations and descriptions of research techniques are provided with examples such as fire-scars from trees used to reconstruct disturbance, fossil pollen used to reconstruct vegetation change and plant migration, transect and quadrate sampling.
Includes key biogeographical theories that link space and time to the distribution of life. Some of these theories include: 1. Ranges, Reflicts, Refuges, Corridors, Barriers, 2. Centers of Origins, 3. Cladistics, 4. Variance, 5. Island BioGeography, 6. Diversity Theory, 7. Gap Analysis for Conservation.
Customer Reviews:
The first thorough synthesis of Biogeography.......2003-08-15
I waited a long time for this book to come out, after hearing about it at a professional conference. I was at first disappointed by the lack of more colorful graphics, but then when I was able to read the text thoroughly, it was clear that content was the reason to buy this.
While others have tried providing syntheses for biogeography, this is the first and only one that has struck me as appropriate for classroom use. It would be quite suitable for an upper-division undergraduate course in Biogeography and many in Biology will also find this volume useful, especially those in Ecology or Conservation Biology.
All in all, MacDonald's first stab at a modern synthesis of a growing field hits the mark, and should only improve with time and further editions. This volume, although pricey in hardback form, will make a great companion to Quammen's "Song of the Dodo Bird" in elucidating the complexity and beauty of biogeography. Kudos to the author.

Coral Evolution.......2006-05-06
J. E. N. Veron, also the author of the reference volumes "Corals of the World" brings together all the knowledge of coral ecology, biogeography and evolution and integrates it in this intellectually enjoyable book.
In the first part of the book Veron gives a comprehensive review of many aspects of (reef builiding, hexa-)coral biology. He discusses the important topic of highly varied coral ecomorphs, different structures of coral colonies depending on the ecological conditions. There is ample treatment of the mechanisms of dispersal of corals over the wide distances of the Indo-Pacific ocean, and the factors that determine it: Ocean currents as well as successively harsher physical conditions in the far North and South. An overview of reproduction in corals is given, with emphasis on the diversity corals display in this aspect of their lives. The coral fossil record also receives a very interesting treatment. All of these topics are illustrated with intuitive diagrams and a number of very illustrative maps of coral distributions around the globe.
In the second part, Veron gives us his take on coral evolution. He stresses that due to the ease, with which corals can be so widely dispersed and hybridize, together with the many ecomorphs corals can form, the concept of a species softens up. Rather than the taking the course of evolution as in many other groups of animals, where a number of factors make speciation (the irreversible separation of two populations) more likely to occur, reticulate evolution prevails in corals. In this type of evolution, species diverge, but then hybridize again. These hybrids occur all the time, and prevail when the environmental conditions allow it. Thus, a new hybrid species can originate and subsequently start to spread at a many locations simultaneously. This type of evolution has previously been described mainly in plants. It is not surprising that coral evolution is similar, as they are, due to the presence of their photosynthetic zooxanthellae symbionts, "animals that behave like plants".
This book was clearly written by someone who has both ample field experience in coral biology and has also thought thoroughly about evolutionary theory. This combination of field observations and large-scale theory makes this book very worth reading. My only criticisms are that the author sometimes does not make his arguments in the form of continuous text, but lists them point by point. That hurts the readability of the book. He also makes an effort to present not only his own view on a subject, but discusses historically interesting or opposing views. While this is highly laudable from a scholarly point of view, it can be slightly confusing for a reader who is a novice to the field.
An Evoltionary History of the Corals.......2000-03-31
Veron opens the book describing why corals are so difficult to study in an evolutionary and biogeographic context: the same species will have completely different physical features depending on the physical conditions under which the coral is growing, so extreme that the different morphs often do not resemble one another.
With this caution in mind, Veron then takes the problem of coral evolution head-on. The book is filled with thorough but easy to understand figures which indicate past changes in sea level, different current patters, phylogenetic trees, etc; all the factors which contribute to evolution and speciation. These factors are all responsible for the biogeography of the different corals, which further contributes to allopatric speciation.
Lastly, Veron argues that corals are an excellent model to study evolution within a species context. He argues that in an evolutionary context, there are really no such thing as "species" (in the traditional sense). He supports this argument with convincing evidence from the Scleractinia.
This is a fabulous book for anyone (of all levels of experience) with an interest in corals, marine biology, biogeography or evolution.

Book Description
This book reviews the various metabolic and functional mechanisms that animals possess in order to successfully live in their own particular, often unique, environments. The book's purpose is to demonstrate both the diversity of responses that are shown (be they biochemical, physiological, or behavioral) and to demonstrate the underlying principles of gas exchange and transport for a wide range of diverse organisms. What results is a useful review and analysis of our modern understanding of the respiratory physiology of helminths (parasitic worms), crustacea, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The approach taken by the editors is essentially comparative and the individual authors were chosen so as to provide a useful, complementary view of the subject.

Customer Reviews:
Get on the path to becoming a better deer hunter.......2006-06-11
"Whitetail Wisdom" by Dan Schmidt, editor of the top whitetail magazine Deer & Deer Hunting, is one of the few deer hunting manuals both simple enough and comprehensive enough to be called a true handbook. Its subtitle is "a Proven 12-Step Guide To Scouting Less and Hunting More." No question about it -- that gets the attention of any serious deer hunter who has lots of claims on his time.
Schmidt advocates a non-obsessive approach to deer hunting. That's not to say that Schmidt undervalues a serious game plan -- any knowledgeable hunter can list countless details that need to be analyzed and taken seriously. But Schmidt keeps hunting in its proper perspective. He recognizes that any hunter scratching out a living while raising a family doesn't have the time or money he'd like to devote to hunting.
Schmidt offers one statement that suggests the enormous respect he has for the everyday hunter in an age when many are obsessed with high-scoring antlers: "No hunter in North America, especially the so-called celebrities, could regularly kill mature deer from most of the properties most of us hunt.... Most of these guys are merely blessed to have access to great land and unpressured deer." At last -- someone has said what I've long believed.
Another emphasis is on enjoying freedoms -- freedom to appreciate all aspects of the hunt, freedom to hunt without the pressure of living up to someone else's standards of accomplishment, and the freedom of simplicity in an approach to hunting. He prefers a few well-organized cargo pockets rather than a backpack overstuffed with gear that gets little or no use. A bonus of minimalism is the clearing of clutter from the mind.
He brings what he calls a "5-point pyramid" to all scouting. It includes weather, food, habitat, human pressure and deer biology. A scouting effort that includes these basics will always outperform one that doesn't.
Whitetail Wisdom is a 224-page primer (complete with photos) on deer hunting that will school the hunter who's just getting started. It's also a digest of principles for the veteran with many seasons under his belt. And it's organized around a realistic philosophy of hunting that recognizes few hunters will become pros. Like any good guidebook, it's well-indexed and will give you many opportunities to thumb through for the information that almost guarantees you will become a better hunter.
Public Land Guide.......2006-05-23
If you hunt public land and enjoy hunting harder than the average "Joe", then this book will help you beat the odds and bag bigger deer. The common sense approach complete with experiences make this a great read.
Deer hunters will find Whitetail Wisdom a 'must' for improving their odds.......2006-01-07
The busy deer hunter seldom has time to read all the books on the market providing tips on deer hunting strategy: but if only one book were recommended, make it the '12-Step program' of Whitetail Wisdom: A Proven 12-Step Guide To Scouting Less And Hunting More. From insights on how to fool mature bucks to assessing modern hunting gear and using the bow and rifle to better advantage, deer hunters will find Whitetail Wisdom a 'must' for improving their odds.

Customer Reviews:
Great comprehensive study of Czech - but be wary - the language is HARD!.......2007-08-19
I've been studying Czech out of this book since July 2006. It's the only comprehensive overview of the Czech language out there, and it's great. The book is very well written and edited. It's very concise and explains everything you need to know about the language in a logical and sequential way. If you are truly devoted to learning the language in depth, this is the book for you. Be aware however, you will need to make flashcards, listen to Czech internet radio and rent Czech movies, take notes from the book, and perhaps purchase Josef Fronek's Czech-English dictionary. If you really want to put the time in - this is the book for you. But it's VERY difficult, and is like doing a Sudoku puzzle every time you sit down to read it.
If you just want to learn a couple of useful phrases, check out the in-flight Czech CD or Berlitz's tape on Czech expressions. Stay away from the Pimsleur 5CD set, because it's extremely boring.
For the more serious student.......2007-01-05
While I believe the lessons would eventually teach Czech well, they seemed to be designed for someone sitting down at a desk and repeatedly replaying the CD's while following along the written text. Having said that, I did found the book material excellent for a vocabulary reference. The verbal CD conversations were difficult to follow as a learning device, however, listening and reading at the same time did give a good opportunity to learn how to speak the Czech written words with some accuracy. I did use the text in the Czech Republic while we were there and it was helpful as a reference. I never made it through the CD's to the end. This to me was not a program that I could learn in only a couple of weeks, but it is a good foundation for someone who really needs to learn Czech over a period of time. The two stars are for the intensity needed to learn from the program, not the quality of what is provided.
a broad introduction.......2006-06-16
I was surprised at how much material this book covered, especially with some of the colloquial forms of speech that wouldnt be taught in other, more "formal" courses...
But it is very confusing sometimes and you will seriously have to put a LOT of work into memorizing the information presented in the dialogs. Yes, it's true that sometimes the book doesnt match the audio, but only with one or two words. The charts are extremely confusing and unhelpful...
This book is not for the casual tourist, it is for a language learner who is intent on packing in as much information as possible with limited practice material.... so be warned i guess...
stay away.......2005-12-20
I bought this book shortly before moving to the Czech Republic with hopes of learning a bit of this (notoriously difficult) language. I was confident after going through the first section, which covered basic introductions and common phrases. Then the whole endeavor headed west. In the section where you learn to talk about where you're from, the dialogues go something like this- "Hi, I'm ________, from ________. Where are you from?" "Oh, I'm ________, and I'm originally from ________, but right now I'm living in ___________ so I'm not really a __________, I'm a ____________." Then you learn such "useful" phrases as "My, they're in a hurry!" and "I'm late for the conference." I got as far as chapter 4, and then I threw the book across the room and haven't touched it since.
The book claims to be aimed at beginners- tourists and business travellers who need to learn a lot in a limited amount of time. The problem is, this is NOT beginner material. As a short-term traveller, you will find everything you need in a phrasebook. As an expatriate, this book will frustrate you and make you cry. Wait till you get to the Czech Republic, most bookstores in Prague and the other larger cities carry a decent selection of Czech language books for foreigners. My reccommendations- "Czech Step By Step" and "Do You Want to Speak Czech?"
Not for tourists.......2005-09-28
I purchased this book for an upcoming trip to Prague, in hopes of at least learning a little of the language. Unfortunately, all I came away with was "please," "thank you," and "hello." The book starts out doing a good job of outlining how to pronounce Czech words and how different accents change the sounds, however, the units stray increasingly far from anything useful to a tourist (including a conversation in which the 2 characters are having a domestic dispute). The book does include the numbers and other basics, but the cd does not cover their pronunciation.
This may be a good supplemental cd if you are already in a Czech class, because it gives a good feel for the pronunciation of the language as a whole, however it is not useful for a tourist who needs to learn things such as how to ask how much something costs or needs to be able to read a menu. Thankfully everything in Prague was in English as well, but I would have liked to learn a bit more of the language before going.

Too Complicated and Random.......2004-08-24
I am struggling my way through the chapters, doing the exercises, and listening to the CDs. Much of it is getting through to me, but it is requiring the use of on-line dictionaries and a great deal of effort. The book tries to build on the skills learned from one chapter to the next, however it introduces too much too quickly and further complicates the plan by introducing too manny different words for the same things. My guess is that you should spend about 2 months going through the entire book...each week re-reading everything you have learned. I understand nothing comes easy, and anyone hoping for a quick and easy way to learn a new language is kidding themselves...but it would be more useful if this book did away with the excess vocabulary and made the CDs more slow and intelligible. Otherwise, like myself, one can grow bored and frustrated very quickly and lose interest in the entire endeavor. This book does one thing really well...it gives you a reality-Czech.
Second Place.......2002-03-16
There are pretty much two popular czech language book courses (not just phrase books). I reccomend the other one because it is easier to follow and learn from. Glossary in this book is also only czech-english.
A good place to learn conversation.......2001-06-20
There are two primary goals to master when trying to learn Czech. The first is attempting to learn all of the various rules for endings changes (and the numerous irregulars and exceptions). The second is building vocabulary and conversational ability. Short wisely leans toward the second goal and gently introduces the labyrinth of grammatical rules as needed. If the first goal is stressed, it is hard not to feel overwhelmed and give up.
Interesting, rough for a first-timer........2001-02-15
I'm learning with this book, and I do find it helpful and interesting. But I think the chapters introduce too many points at a time, and the exercises at the end of each chapter are not comprehensive enough to practice what was presented. I agree with other reviewers that the book relies a bit too much on intuition on the part of the reader.
The main thing I'm using it for is studying the conversation practices and comparing them with the tapes. I'd have to say that I've actually learned more Czech from a 40 year old copy of "Teach Yourself Czech" I found. Each chapter is only 2-3 pages long (there are lots of chapters) so you can digest things a bit at a time. So don't forget to look around some of your local used book stores!!
Czech:a Complete Course for Beginners.......2000-02-12
It depends on why you wish to learn Czech. If it's for a good grounding in grammar and to be able to read Czech literature, then this book is fine.If you're learning, as I am, for holiday purposes, then it's not much use.I shall be travelling alone, and I need to be able to ask about hotels, trains and buses, local sights,to order meals, to change money. This book is no use for that at all. The audio cassette is very difficult to follow at first, as the speech is so rapid. I know all the arguments for presenting it in this way, but when there are new and very difficult sounds to master we need more help. The r/s sound is a beast. I've got it, but no thanks to this course.

The Gualenghi d'Este Hours: Art and Devotion in Renaissance Ferrara (Getty Museum Monographs on Illuminated Manuscripts)
ASIN: 0892362847 |
Book Description
Leading French painters in the late medieval period executed miniatures for lavishly illuminated books of hours. In the mid-fifteenth century, Simon de Varie commissioned such a book. Completed in 1455, it included five priceless works by the most eminent French painter of the time, Jean
Fouquet, as well as other striking paintings by two of his contemporaries.
In the seventeenth century, Simon de Varie's book was divided into three sections and sold as separate volumes. Two of these volumes are today in the Royal Library in The Hague. The third volume--thought lost until 1984, when it surfaced in a private collection and was subsequently acquired by
the Getty Museum--contains the first miniatures by Jean Fouquet to have been discovered in eighty years.
This beautiful book will reproduce in color all of the miniatures and historiated initials in the original manuscript, along with selected text pages with secondary decoration. Comparative illustrations also accompany the two essays in the volume. Marrow's text addresses the role of books of
hours in late medieval culture; the contents and form of de Varie's Hours; and the relationship of the miniatures by Fouquet to the rest of the artist's oeuvre. In a related essay, Francois Avril discusses the position of Simon de Varie and his family in mid-fifteenth-century France.
The publication of The Hours of Simon de Varie adds to the Getty's impressive list of publications on illuminated manuscripts begun in 1990 and including the widely acclaimed facsimile Mira calligraphiae monumenta.
