Dynamic Macroeconomics is an attempt to revitalize the traditions of nonmarket clearing approaches to macroeconomics. Using sophisticated tools from dynamic analysis, the authors introduce a consistent, integrated framework for disequilibrium macroeconomic dynamics and explore its relationship to the competing--and currently dominant--equilibrium dynamics.

The book is organized into five parts. Part I covers background models of market-clearing and nonmarket-clearing approaches. Part II introduces short-run monetary models of macroeconomic fluctuations that build on the dynamic interaction of product, labor, and financial markets. Part III explores monetary instability in variants with capital accumulation and growth. Part IV explores supply and demand side Keynesian business cycles and monetary-type growth models. Part V considers the role of the financial sector as a source of instability and fluctuations.

I found this to be an excellant book for more advanced students (I encouraged mine to read it this past semester). The author gives a splendid explanation of the fundamental economic issues concerning monetary policy and the problems and challenges that plague a dynamic economy.

I must say I bought this book based on the list of enterpreneurial recommendations given by Mr. Keng. At that time, it was only at 11 $ used.

First the book is written from the perspective and background of two influential authors who worked for the US army. The methos is right down to the point, that it will be compulsory to evaluate all your ventures by it. Only if you tackle a complex project will you go to the complete SAVE approach.

I have seen some of the books Mr. Keng recommends, those ou-of-print and almost at 200 $. If you are looking for a structures methos to see if your venture project is solid, this book is what you are looking for.

This is an excellent guide-book for project managers. It contains very highly organised techniques for measuring the success potential of virtually any project decision.

It been written by two eminently qualified authors - one, trained as an engineer & the other, an architect, but both had worked as principal economists & management consultants & involved in myriad project feasibility studies & new venture evaluations.

Of all the books I have in my personal library over the years that relate to project feasibility studies & new venture evaluations, this one is my personal favourite. It is also the most comprehensive & yet indepth! It has assisted my professional work while I was working in the corporate world.

In a nut shell, this book has a very practical, well-structured & clearly-defined numerical rating system, ranging from rough processing to full evaluation, to help you in your exploration & evaluation, covering:

four (4) broad facets, namely:

- your product/service/activity (in terms of prospective performance, salability, defensibility);
- yourself or your company (in terms of personal traits & relative strengths/weaknesses);
- your environment (in terms of possible effects);
- your venture (in terms of investment considerations & strategic possibilities;

These are broken down into:

- thirteen (13) general aspects;

These are further broken down into:

- sixty nine (69) individual factors;

The authors coin the acronym 'SAVE' (hence the book title, Strategic Analysis Venture Evaluation) to sum up their wonderful model. The model approach will definitely save you from potential failure.

Packed with forms, checklists, questions, it will compel your careful attention to all the factors involved in a new venture, thus preventing dangerous blindspots. It also help to prevent over-valueing a few dominant factors that tend to distort decision/judgement.

As the authors contend in the inside cover of this book: "This is the only book that provide you with immediate answers to such complex questions as, How attractive is this proposed venture, to this company, organisation or individual, at this time, and under this set of conditions."

I highly recommend this book to all project managers!

Hawaiian mushrooms galore!.......2002-08-05

For anyone familiar with mushroom gathering in temperate zones, Hawaii would seem to offer scant picking . . . until you pick up MUSHROOMS OF HAWAII. Unbelievable! The mushrooms in Hawaii are harder to find, yes. Some are very different from what you're likely to encounter on the mainland. Some are old friends: morels. Others are well known, colorful enemies: Amanita muscaria. All are beautifully illustrated. Even if you aren't a hunter of wild mushrooms, the photographs alone will have you entranced. And there's a lot else in these pages as well, from recipes, to descriptions of the places where the elusive fungi grow. The bibliography is excellent, providing plenty of further reading for the aficionado and testimony to the careful research that went into this work. Is there anything wrong with it? I do have one complaint. It's much too nice to pack on a field trip. Maybe the authors will come out soon with a small field guide to take along. That way I can leave this volume safe at home where I can go over those great photos at my leisure and not worry about what might happen to the book when stuffed into a knapsack.

This monograph details molecular (DNA sequence) and morphological variation of slender mouse opposums of the genus Marmosops, a diverse but biologically poorly known group of insectivorous marsupials of the neotropical wet forests. Emphasis is placed on taxa of the Atlantic rainforest of coastal Brazil, with comparisons made to those of Amazonia. Lineages of these opossums are quite old, likely dating fromthe late Tertiary, and the acutal number of species in the genus is considerably higher than presently believed. Both of these findings are important to issues of meaasurement and management of biodiversity in threatened ecosystems.

Verlen Kruger and Steve Landick came up with the idea of a canoe trip that would surpass all others, and they did it. Again and again they were warned, "It can't be done" or "You'll never make it", but each time they rose to the challenge and kept going, finally completing a canoe trip of 28,000 miles that lasted three and a half years and was appropriately named The Ultimate Canoe Challenge. Great book and a great story ..........2005-10-23

... full of practical informations, especially, if you are plannning long expedition paddling trips.

The entire story is told from the Verlen's perspective. It's a pity that Brand Frentz didn't try to include any views of other participants of the ultimate canoe challenge. A short interviews with Steve Landick and Valerie Fons would be really interesting.

An "Ultimate" read.......2005-02-27

Verlen Kruger was a single minded modern day adventurer. He started paddling at 41 and before he died (On August 2, 2004, at age 82) he had covered over 100,000 miles by canoe, a world record. His last major expedition was celebrating his 80th birthday while paddling 2000 miles down length of the Yukon River with family and friends.

This book details Verlens' "Ultimate Canoe Challenge". He and his new son in law Steve Landick decide to paddle up and down almost every major watershed in North America including the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. They are the only people to paddle UP the Mississipi and up the Colorado river including the Grand Canyon! Three years and innumerable hardships later the job was done. But not without personal and financial costs.

One of Verlens' favorite quotes was, "Happy are they who dream dreams ...and have the courage to make them come true."

Brand Frentz has done an admirable job of telling the tale, the dream and the courage. It is a facinating read and I highly recommend this book to people who enjoy the "ultimate" in anything.

The fundamental issue it addresses is the proper balance between syntax and semantics, between structure and derivation, and between rule systems and lexicon. It argues that the balance struck by mainstream generative grammar is wrong. It puts forward a new basis for syntactic theory, drawing on a wide range of frameworks, and charts new directions for research. In the past four decades, theories of syntactic structure have become more abstract, and syntactic derivations have become ever more complex. Peter Culicover and Ray Jackendoff trace this development through the history of contemporary syntactic theory, showing how much it has been driven by theory-internal rather than empirical considerations. They develop an alternative that is responsive to linguistic, cognitive, computational, and biological concerns. A difficult but rewarding read.......2005-12-30

The title 'Simpler Syntax' means simpler than syntax as implemented in Chomskyan mainstream generative grammar. The book is not at all simple, and readers who are not already familiar with arcane linguistic concepts such as c-command, theta roles, pied-piping, and pro-drop, will soon become lost. I'm not a linguist, but I've tried to follow mainstream linguistics over the years and I could follow enough of this book to see that the authors were saying something very important, despite the complexity of the arguments, which were illustrated with alternative analyses of a wide range of linguistic constructions.
The authors have in-depth knowledge of Chomskyan theory and what they've done here is to argue that it went wrong years ago in some of its foundational assymptions. They reject core notions, such as the idea that branching is binary, that movement is involved in syntactic derivations, that there is a distinction between periphery and core, and that syntax is the sole generative component. The result is that the syntax gets a lot simpler, though the semantics gets more complicated. For a psychologist the argument they present is very persuasive: their analyses are intuitively far more appealing than the fiendishly complex syntactic trees that you get from mainstream generative grammar - one can get a sense of how children might learn a language conceptualised this way, and how the brain might process it. This is essentially a processing account. The numerous examples are pretty challenging for the reader, but I can see they are essential to make the case - and they demonstrate a remarkable range of knowledge and depth of scholarship in the authors.
Finally, a very unusual feature, for a book in this field, is that the authors attempt to compare and contrast different linguistic approaches, noting what is useful about different analyses, and avoiding the kind of confrontational argument that all too often has led to overheated and sterile debate.
I had always felt uncomfortable with the sheer implausibility of Chomskyan accounts of language and its acquisition: this book explains why and offers an alternative.

What roles do syntax and semantics have in the grammar of a language? What are the consequences of these roles for syntactic structure, and why does it matter? We sketch the Simpler Syntax Hypothesis, which holds that much of the explanatory role attributed to syntax in contemporary linguistics is properly the responsibility of semantics. This rebalancing permits broader coverage of empirical linguistic phenomena and promises a tighter integration of linguistic theory into the cognitive scientific enterprise. Less regulation => more growth.......2003-11-18

This was published in 2000, in what we now know as the last leg of the longest expansion in US history. During which, the ideological push for deregulation grew hugely. The book reflects this, and indeed Hahn and the American Enterprise Institute from which he hails probably played no small part in this.

The book's arguments are well marshalled, and can be summarised simply as stating that a cost effective way for an economy to grow is by reducing the amount of government regulation in various industries.

Hahn does not confine his arguments to the US. Indeed, half the book describes the impact on the developing world, where the need for growth is far more acute, due to burgeoning populations, subsections of which subsist at very minimal levels. Empirically, the massive growth of Chinese manufacturing and Indian information technology has been attributed in no small part to their governments reducing regulations.

For the US, Hash predicted that some industries like telecommunications and electricity would deregulate slowly, due to their complexity. He specifically cited these two! From the perspective of three short years later, and the scandals of WorldCom and Enron, you could suggest that a hasty deregulation might have costs of its own. And that deregulation does not necessarily mean less government monitoring of industries.
