            Book Description

Shift: Secrets of Positive Change for Organizations and Their Leaders offers a new perspective on coping with the perceived disorder and chaos of today's ever-changing workplace. By outlining a series of actions, through four major principals of change, SHIFT constitutes a "different approach" for leaders who must manage the human side of change. It offers simple steps to help leaders slow down, notice how they contribute to the work environment, and then move forward in a more meaningful, effective and personally rewarding manner.

5 out of 5 stars Important beyond the business world.......2003-01-22

The ideas and tools offered up in Janice's book are positioned for business leaders, but are useful for the other half of your waking hours. Janice includes many stories outside the work place that demonstrate how her ideas impact the personal life of her clients and herself. Well read or trained business people will be familiar with a lot of the concepts, what is unique and useful is; the different perspective, the connection of the ideas and the exercises Janice presents to the reader. The understanding of human nature gained as a psychotherapist is clear in each chapter as Janice explains how to change the way people behave in organizations. The ideas and tools are carefully woven into a logical progression throughout the book, however you can get value by starting anywhere or reading a single chapter. At the end of each short chapter you will find some exercises often phrased as questions to the reader. I found the exercises very useful for putting the ideas into action. The saying good things come in small packages applies here, a physically small book with a big impact.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you focused on the right things in times of change.......2002-08-30

I picked up Janice Calnan's book mostly out of curiosity since I have a keen interest in the smooth implementation of new projects and ideas. Shortly thereafter, and with very little warning, organizational convulsions suddently started to happen. My department was changed overnight. Some people were let go, others reassigned, new roles were in store for those that remained. "Change" was now very up close, personal and not a lot of fun. The book helped me focus on the right things in order to get through it all.

The "secrets" are a collection of new and simple ideas that caused a shift in my assumptions and behaviours. Once I began to think about and understand the concepts over a period of time, I found it much easier to manage my emotions and produce results.

5 out of 5 stars A superb handbook for personal and organzational change.......2002-06-01

Janice Calnan's book SHIFT was brought to me about a month ago while I was conducting workshops at a government accountability conference in Ottawa. In just the five minutes I had to scan the opening "Letter to the Reader" and Introduction, I knew I was onto something special. I have been involved in the work of quality and organizational improvement for about 20 years. I am a certified "business book junkie," consuming dozens of titles a year. Janice Calnan's SHIFT is a remarkable piece of work. Ms. Calnan offers a simple, clear path for people to begin the process of personal change needed to craft more effective and successful organizations. It is obvious that Janice Calnan has spent a great deal of time working with, and learning from people at all levels of organizational structures. She has distilled the complex and seemingly arcane art of organizational improvement into a clear and transformational process. The book's ideas are set out in a simple, straightforward style, that is likely to appeal to even the most entrenched "old thinking" business practitioner. Janice Calnan's book has earned a top spot on my own reference shelf, along such classics as Peter Scholtes' TEAM Handbook, and the works of Deming, Juran, Townsend, Peters, and Wheatley. If you are engaged in the work of organizational change, I would highly recommend this book.

              Book Description

Resources for agricultural science are scarce across the world. Yet even as budgets are shrinking, agricultural science is expanding its inquiry into many new areas, including environmental preservation, food safety, food quality, and rural development, all in addition to its traditional concerns. Research administrators are now faced with the need to provide strong evidence that costs are justified by benefits. Science Under Scarcity provides invaluable guide to the theory and methods for evaluating research in agriculture and setting priorities for resource allocation.

The laboratory exercises in this manual are coordinated with Human Biology, a text that has two primary functions: 1) to understand how the human body works and 2) to understand the relationship of humans to other living things in the biosphere. This laboratory manual allows adaptation to a variety of course orientations and designs. There are a sufficient number of laboratories to permit a choice of activities over the length of the course. Many activities may be performed as demonstrations rather than as student activities, thereby shortening the time required to cover a particular concept.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Condition/More than I expected.......2002-10-08

The Lab Manual I purchase "used condition, some writing". Was in very good condition. Only 2-5 pages were written on and the remainder of the Manual was perfect. Shipping was in one weeks time with a guarentee, and option to send back if I wasn't satisfied. The Lab Manual met my need. *And much cheaper than buying the Manual from school.

4 out of 5 stars Good in many ways, but contains errors.......2002-08-29

While this book was helpful in my AP Biology class, we spent many periods debating over how to interpret certain diagrams, only to find out that the reason it was so hard to understand was because the diagram itself was badly drawn. Some are more complicated or more simple than they need to be, one or two are just wrong. However, I highly recommend this book to anyone who learns well by the written word rather than by pictures.

                            Book Description

This book is the first attempt to collect important information on the increasingly valued science of rabbit production into one volume. Over the past twenty years, rabbit production systems have grown into important meat providers in many parts of the world. Rabbits' rapid growth rate, reproductive performance, adaptability, and low fat content are just some of the reasons for the species' current popularity. A number of research groups have devoted considerable effort to studying rabbit production. This ambitious one-volume guide explores their studies, covering a broad variety of topics including nutrition, nutrient requirements, feeding value and management, pathology and carcass quality, plus information on Angora and pet rabbits. Written by distinguished research workers who are recognized specialists in the field from around the world, this book is an invaluable asset to those involved with rabbit feeding and research.

                              Book Description

During the past few years, considerable reseach has been undertaken on rabbit nutrition. Rabbit producers, feed manufacturers, animal nutritionists, and others interested in rabbit production will find this book to be the new authority. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book evaluates new information on such topics as protein digestion and requirements, nutrition/disease interrelationships, feeding behavior, and nutrional factors involved in enteritis.

Peter R. Cheeke has done a terrific job in condensing his and a great deal others' research into a book that serious rabbit breeders will consult for generations to come.

It must be noted that this book is not going to be an easy read for many people - particularly non-native English-speakers. Still, it is worth every effort you will make for this is the best available source of detailed information resulting from years of painstaking research.

Serious raisers will likely also want to subscribe to a bi-monthly internet publication at prma.org and to Rabbit Habit Weekly at rabbitfarming.com.

Two other books make excellent companions to Rabbit Feeding & Nutrition - Rabbit Production; Rabbit Farming Manual (available only direct from publisher at rabbitfarming.org).

Cheeke was a co-author on Rabbit Production.

Again, Rabbit Feeding & Nutrition is a must read for commercial rabbit producers.

5 out of 5 stars Rabbit Feeding and Nutrition.......2000-04-08

This is by far the best book I've read on feeding rabbits correctly. The information is geared towards those breeding rabbits for show and meat production. I highly recommend this book to those who are raising rabbits commercially and are interested in increased production and health of the rabbit herd. The information given is very useful for eliminating guesswork and confusion about what to feed for best desired results.

I do not think this would be useful to pet rabbit owners.

After leading Georgia athletics to national prominence and maintaining the school's glorified status for decades, Vince Dooley is finally ready to tell the complete story of his life. From the day he was named UGA's head coach at the age of 31 to the controversial decision by university president Michael Adams not to renew his contract, Dooley leaves no questions unanswered in this candid autobiography by one of the most respected and decorated administrators in the history of intercollegiate athletics.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Story About University Life and Top-Level Athletics.......2005-12-07

When I joined the University of Georgia faculty in 1969, I kept hearing about Vince Dooley, the university's very young head football coach. The previous year, he had led the team to the Southeastern Conference Championship, resulting in a Sugar Bowl bid. Clearly, Dooley had assumed leadership of a nearly defunct football program and restored a degree of glory quickly.

This book details Dooley's four-decade career at Georgia, as Coach and Director of Athletics. Under his aegis, the program expanded dramatically, culminating in six conference championships in football, a national football championship and a prominent place for Vince Dooley, not only in university circles, but throughout Georgia and the nation--with Dooley holding every leadership position available in the NCAA and other major athletic organizations.

As Georgia football flourished, so did other sports, both in facilities and in season records.

My Forty Years at Georgia talks unabashedly about the good news and the bad news. The teams endured some mediocre seasons, and one losing season. Critics hurled charges of academic favoritism for athletes. Ultimately, Vince Dooley did not get a contract extension he wanted from President Michael Adams.

In this memoir, Dooley shares his most palpable memories, from coaching Herschel Walker to losing his place at the institution that became synonymous with his career, even his life.

Although I left the faculty after five years, to enter academic administration elsewhere and ultimately establish my consulting business, I maintained my Georgia connections. Happily, since 1979 I have attended every home game and have come to know Vince Dooley personally, which I consider a genuine privilege.

I highly recommend this book as a reliable resource for those who want to understand amateur athletics at the highest level, and to glimpse a power struggle that divided a fabled program. Vince Dooley emerges shaken, but unbowed. Every university would benefit from forty years with a Coach and Athletic Director who had his vision and stature--and his dedication to the institution.

4 out of 5 stars Candid, but Classy.......2005-10-13

Good book by a good man who happens to also be an outstanding football coach...Vince Dooley has always been a classy man and this book follows that mode...It is written in keeping with his personality. While it is candid and nothing is held back---see his comments on his favorite players, etc.---it is written and presented in a classy, courteous style, the style of a Southern Gentleman who loved football, was a part of football, an integral part of the Southeastern Conference for more than 50 years, yet had a vision and perspective beyond football....parts on his disagreements with Georgia President Michael Adams should be especially revealing to the reader in terms of campus politics, the most vicious politics of all...even here, Dooley, while being candid, handles the "controversy" in a genteel manner. Tony Barnhart's deft touch is present, but never obvious...He guided and directed--coached--Vince Dooley well...A valuable book to the history of southern football, Georgia football in particular. Any fan of SEC Football will enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Disaster Synopsis Book.......2006-03-14

Nice looking book, but I was disappointed that only 2 or 3 pages were given to each disaster. While I recognize the task of covering 100 disasters obviously means large number of pages can't be written for each event, I did want to read more than just 2 pages. This fact was not mentioned in the sales description of the book. There is only one photo (printed, not a photo plate, which are clearer) per event, which was also a big disappointment. I paged through the book when I received it and decided to return it because of these things. Covering disasters from BC to current day also may not appeal to everyone.

This collection goes far beyond the commonly seen pattern books to offer a fine selection of rarely seen European advertising art and commercial alphabets nicely displayed in full color. An excellent resource not only for patterns and styles, this presents an extensive selection of good-sized full-color plates allowing a feeling for the ambience of period line, form and color.
