A significant number of the world's ocean fisheries are depleted, and some have collapsed, from overfishing. Although many of the same fishermen who are causing these declines stand to suffer the most from them, they continue to overfish. Why is this happening? What can be done to solve the problem.
The authors of Fish, Markets, and Fishermen argue that the reasons are primarily economic, and that overfishing is an inevitable consequence of the current sets of incentives facing ocean fishermen. This volume illuminates these incentives as they operate both in the aggregate and at the level of day-to-day decision-making by vessel skippers. The authors provide a primer on fish population biology and the economics of fisheries under various access regimes, and use that information in analyzing policies for managing fisheries. The book:

The value of these methods in the circumscription and identification of archaea and bacteria is demonstrated. Real life stories matched with stunning photography and mouth watering recipes makes me want take a few months off and live this book just the way Peter did it. I've ordered a few of these books as they make terrific presents even for the non-fishermen amongst us.
Fishing Adventures in living color.......2005-11-24
The book is both graphically and verbally exciting as the author conveys the art of fishing and experiencing life on the water. One gets the feel of fish as well as the taste, with the recipes as part of the adventure. Many of the locations are part of my dreams as a fisherman to experience, and many of the experiences, especially in salt water mirror my own excitement. The photos are spectacular. Coupled with the design of the book, the writing places you in the adventure with real people experiences, visually giving the sense of the water, the fish, the aesthetic of nature. The same tone of the excitement of fishing off Montauk, or Montana continues throughout the book, allowing envy on the reader's part to sharing the adventure.

Treat yourself or someone you know who likes to relax and thumb through a fine fly-flishing book. Since this comes from a big publisher, our little anti-catalog didn't get sent a review copy. But when we did get our hands on the book we were awe-struck. It rivals some of the $50-60 books out there this holiday season, but with a much smaller price tag. The book begins with the birth of a fisherman on his home waters in the famed New York area-Catskills, Adirondacks, Delaware-and travels the country from the west to midwest and southeast to Montauk. Each fly-fisher will find waters he's fished and his dream waters described in pictorial photos and entertaining editorial prose.
The author, Peter Kaminsky, grew up in New Jersey, graduated from Princeton University in the early 1970s, and moved to New York, where he promptly became a cabbie. He left hackwork, went to graduate school and began writing for National Lampoon. Then, he discovered fishing: "Fishing was the greatest thing I ever did and it took over my life".
Between television projects largely in the comedy field, he has worked with Jerry Seinfeld, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and John Candy. Kaminsky currently contributes to the New York Times and outdoor magazines such as Outdoor Life and Sports Afield, writing about his fishing experiences. He also likes to write about food and you'll find many tantalizing recipes scattered throughout the book.
The publisher has been perfecting their art of quality gift books for decades. They publish the traditional home building, cooking, and gardening books to books for the Natural History Association and Smithsonian. They've also done highly-illustrated children's tales; photo books from puppies to grandmothers; and the life's work of musical greats, John Lennon and Sinatra. It is apparent that they pride themselves on creating masterpiece books on a wide variety of subject matter. They don't disappoint us now. Make sure to take a peek underneath the dust-jacket. I have seen very few with a book cover imprint as beautiful.

Want to out-Zagat Zagat? Start a website for chowhounds and get them to eat at various places and send in a report to your website. When your website registers 500,000 hits go to a publisher and talk them into publishing your aggregation of reviews in one compact volume. Come up with variations on the theme, like farmers markets and lunch trucks, so you're not just stuck in the restaurant world. Of course it helps if you have a name and a column somewhere.
Create a "by-cuisine" index (besides the main alphabetical one) that sub-divides cuisine into Chinese (Beijing) Chinese (Dim Sum) Chinese (Cantonese) and see if anyone can top that!
The format and organization of this guide is as individual and eclectic as the editor and chief chowhound, Jim Leff. Although the book is laid out alphabetically the alphabet can refer to anything here-a town, a food, a lunch truck. Santa Rosa, Sausage, Sausalito, and Scones all follow each other alphabetically. Luckily there are several indexes to help the reader sort things out.
Be forewarned. Chez Panisse isn't in here and neither are some of the other well-known restaurants in S.F., Berkeley, and Napa where I ate during my last visit five years ago. But the next time I see my cousin in Berkeley, I'll remember that the best rugelach in the world (or at least in the bay area) can be found in a bakery there. I've got to bring him something, right?

This book was very helpful on my recent visit to San Francisco. I have visited San Francisco a dozen times, but have never had such delicous food.
I saved so much money too.
If visiting SF, this is the book to get. I've used them all and know what I'm talking about.

If you are a frequent visitor to the Chowhound website, you will enjoy this. While I agree that the layout seems somewhat haphazard, we enjoy going through it from front to back without looking things up anyway. Great to find those few dishes that places do well.

This is an excellent resource for the seasoned foodie and those wannabe's out there. We are all on a quest for the best food finds in San Francisco. (...). As you know, San Francisco is constantlty adding new delis, restaurants, bakeries, food outlets and palleta carts. This is the greatest book to keep in the car and consult it whenever the question of where to eat arises.
