This manual prepares users for the "real world" by exposing them to the latest technology and techniques used in the reproduction and the practice of artificial insemination (AI) in livestock. Part One provides information on the advantages and considerations of artificial insemination, basic livestock genetics, the anatomy and reproductive processes of the cow and bull, and semen collection methods. It relates statistics on AI usage and general information about NAAB and CSS. Part Two deals with semen characteristics, including evaluation, processing, and extension; freezing and cryogenic storage; and care of the refrigerator unit. The various tests for semen quality are discussed in detail as is custom selection of semen. Part Three explains insemination techniques for dairy and beef cattle, inseminator training, pregnancy determination in cattle, conception rates, and breeding problems. The exercise on "Embryo Transfer and Related Practices" explains the advances and techniques involved in the field. Great book - but overpriced.......2007-09-18

This book is definitely one-of-a-kind (at least I haven't been able to find any others on the same subject). The content is useful and exactly what I was looking for when I purchased it.

The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because the book is really small. I guess I didn't read the description details very well, but this book was a lot smaller (dimensions) and shorter (pages with information) than I was expecting. I also have really no use for any chapter (of any book) that tries to tell me what camera to get, by the time the book is published that chapter is out of date. That limits the usefulness in the future.

I am glad I purchased it, and the size is nice in that I can pack it up with the gear and use it as a field guide at times.

If you are looking for a book on wildlife videography, there really isn't any other book devoted to the subject right now. However, I'd recommend trying to pick up a used copy and save yourself a little bit of money.

At Last!.......2006-05-29

As a keen amateur camcorder user with a passion for wildlife I've been looking for a book like this for years. It's answered many questions, given me loads of new ideas and all in friendly language I can understand. Various technical matters that were confusing me have been explained and I now have a much clearer idea how the professionals do it. I'm already getting better results from my camcorder and have ideas for movies queuing up in my head. I've realised how previously I was just pointing my camcorder at wildlife and recording - now I am making movies!
I've even found myself contemplating a career in this field.
Highly recommended for anyone wanting to get more out of their camcorder - especially if wanting to record wildlife/nature.

AMYFB, is a hit with animal lovers and healers at our house. My daughter is interested in becoming a vet. but anyone who has a rapport with animals will find it interesting and fun to read. Many adult type books of the intrinsic intelligence of animals have already been published :Among Whales and When Elephants Weep are just two of our favorites. So I was especially pleased when a book on this topic was written simply enough for a child yet interesting enough for her mom. Great job! and it just calls out for a sequel!

Caveat: The reviewer is a subject of one of the stories in the book ,but she would not have agreed to be a part of the project if she did not believe in the book!! But all biases aside.......

AMYFB is a wonderful book that chronicles how the animals around us improve our lives and make us happier. Anyone who owns a pet, or spends time around animals at all, know this, but it is refreshing and enlightening to read through these 26 stories and realize the commonality of our experiences!

Dogs, cats, horses, racoons, a dolphin, a donkey, and even a hamster, are all the best of friends to humans in these short, easy-to-read, sometimes sad and often funny stories.

The book is set up with assessments at the end of each story, and a final test at the end to determine how the reader looks upon the true relationship between people and animals.

Having read this book I found myself thinking that perhaps we as human beings could learn a lot from our animal friends. It certainly made me think about the nature of human/animal interactions. I would highly recommend this book as ideal reading for anyone thinking of buying a pet.

The book is directed at children ages 9-16, but can be enjoyed by folks of all ages.

Book is often inaccurate and vague.......2007-05-24

This book has some great hikes. You may use it to find the hikes, but do NOT rely on it's described hiking distances or directions. On one hike they describe a 1.5 mile section of trail that in reality was about 4 miles. Use your topo maps & GPS before the hikes to be sure of the distances. On another hike, their description of a return route was very vague & didn't mention several landmarks which would've made the route easier to find. Some of the slot hikes don't mention certain obstacles, though these could've happened after the book came out. This book may be too out of date to be useful...

Get there and back with confidence.......2007-04-09

Keep a copy in your car-- I do. Trail guides are easy to understand with all of the information needed to find trailheads with confidence. I have owned this book for years and have used it a number of times to plan trips to a specific destination or to break up long drives with a quick hike when I am on my way to/from some other activity. Get the book, fill the car with gas, and see how many of the hikes you can complete this year!

Excellent Hikers' Guide.......2003-07-01

I bought "100 Hikes in Utah" for my daughter and her fiance because I thought it would be perfect for them. They have discovered the beauty of nature in Utah, especially in the southern part with the cliffs and rock formations.

This is a very well-written guide to the 100 places Steve and Rhett have explored. They know what they're doing, and their experience and love of the outdoors is evident throughout the book.

I like how each chapter is set up with information right at the beginning of the article on every site, telling the reader about the distance round trip, hiking time, difficulty range, best season to go, etc. The articles give great detail about the journey, with tips such as camp sites, water sources, and scenery throughout. There are many wonderful pictures throughout the book. I only wish they had been in color since it's clear the views are spectacular. (Check out the hair-raising photo on page 98!)

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in hiking the beautiful landscape of Utah. Be sure to take this book along with you.

Serious omission in an otherwise excellent book.......2001-06-22

This otherwise excellent guide is seriously compromised by a major omission. For hiking in the west it is really important to know the maximum and minimum elevations of a trail. This book lists the elevation gain, but amazingly and foolishly does not tell you at what altitude the hike begins and ends. This is such a serious (and needless) blunder that I would not recommend the book.

I've looked though this book and was really impressed by the detailed information and variety of hikes. I just ordered it from Amazon and am very anxious to use it this summer with my family and rugged little Scout troop who are gaining a great appreciation for this beautiful land.

Don't Waste Your Money!! Buy 2 Knot books Instead!!.......2006-08-07

When I read the first few pages of this book on Amazon, it peaked my interested enough to buy it. But upon receipt when I had the chance to read through it more thoroughly I found that there was NOTHING interesting or even remotely useful in this book. It has all the traditional vow stuff (even though in the introduction it touts the whole untraditional-wedding horn) and then wierd things like Druid weddings. All the vows included in this book sound similar to one another. Nothing stuck out as being especially interesting.

It was also hard to read. The author included lots of personal accounts from "real" people, and each and every person mentioned had to be tagged (i.e. Dave, 24, brick layer or Jane, 32, personal assistant). It got old REALLY quick and became aggravating to read 50 tags per sentence. Aside from that, each person quoted said the same exact thing: "Since we aren't religious, we wanted a wedding that was different." Yet she never really delivered what I was hoping for: guideance on how to create a personalized wedding/vows.

Even though this book may seem like an economical buy, it's not worth it!! Save yourself and buy all the books the Knot puts out instead...

This book is a good starting point for ideas for an alternative wedding, but you'll end up needing other references to flesh out your planning. I bought this and read it only once; I wish I had just checked it out of the library instead.

The book isn't very well laid out, but you can find some good info if you dig through it.

Ceremonies listed include Protestant, Quaker, Unitarian, Jewish, Civil, Religious Blessing, Interfaith Buddist, Baha'i, Spiritualist, Pagan, Druid, Humanist, Viking, Pacifist. Gay and lesbian ceremonies and Honeymoon/destination weddings are also covered.

Helpful, but Chock full of Errors.......2003-04-24

While the general idea of this book was invaluable - I used it to help plan my own "alternative" wedding - the number of obvious errors in the book became a bit tedious after a while.
For example, in Chapter 3, when listing songs, poems and passages to use in one's ceremony, the author incorrectly lists an Edgar Allen Poe poem and she gives credit to the wrong Rosetti for writing "Sudden Light" among other errors. She also refers to the Convocation or Introduction as the "Charge to Convocation" when it should actually be the "Charge to the Congregation". Also, when referring to various passages in the Bible, some of them are incorrectly refrenced as well. I could go on...
At any rate, if you can get past all of the things that are incorrect in this book, there are some very helpful concepts.

Not really very.......2002-07-16

I was diappointed by Ross-MacDonald's book. She did provide a fair number of wedding ceremonies of different faiths, but I didn't find many of them to be very alternative. Most of them were the same tired old patriachal, sexist, Western-religion-influenced dreck you see all the time- just slightly different because the faith had a different name. There were maybe eight pages that actually had interesting content. I also did not appreciate the author's use of sexist language or her assumption that all clergy people are male.

The Spiritualist and Viking wedding ceremonies seemed most interesting to me, though I wouldn't want to use either of them.

It's not worth the money! I'd suggest checking this book out of your library, skimming it for the bit of useful information, and then writing your own book.

In a review by "The Old Philosopher" above he states that he doesn't find this books covers the classic Celtic art. Probably that';s because the title includes the words "Illumunated manuscripts" in it.

The era of the book artwork IS as described..........2005-11-02

This book is more of an overview of several books than focused on one in particular, but still nice for the plates and a good sampler if you're not sure what to get. The title of this book is not misleading if you know anything about the history of Celtic art and it's later years in illumination, from my experience as a reviewer for the British Museum's publications and having worked in Ireland on archaeology digs as their sketch artist. ;-) During the Christian era of Celtic art they did have many influences of Coptic, Greek, Norse, *and* Persian design, especially in the Book of Kells. The Irish monks did quite a lot of travel during the dark ages to promote learning, and the monastaries in Ireland had students from countries all over the world, hence a good influx of other ideas which they of course fused into their own (masters of adaptation!). "The Old Philosopher"'s desire for Ogham to be used in the manuscripts is very far off... the latin uncial used in the manuscripts is standard for the period, as the ancients Celts (pre-Christianity) didn't have books per sae, only a sort of "runic" writing system of slashes used on staves and stone. They *had* no manuscripts so expecting to see Ogham in a manuscipt would be ridiculous! I think "The Old Philosopher" misunderstands the period of Celtic history these books were created in, as the title is certainly reflective for the period listed. If you enjoy Celtic manuscripts such as the Book of Kells or Lindisfarne Gospels this will be a nice overview of some of the different evolutionary flavors the artwork went through. If you want more information on Celtic art then any book by Ruth and Vincent Megaw (such as "Celtic Art", available from Amazon as well) will cover the early periods (typically only up to the Christian era, or briefly entering the Christian era), and then any book published on the old manuscritps such as the Book of Durrow, Lindisfarne Gospels, and the Book of Kells are great. This book is more an overview of a bunch of books, so good for starting out your manuscript collection.

Not Celtic, and not Anglo-Saxon either........2005-06-14

The title is quite misleading. The Amazon listing also says, "Book Illumination in the British Isles 600-800." Unfortunately that amendment is not shown on the cover, only on the inside title page and I missed it. I find that contradictory anyway since classic Celtic culture had pretty much vanished by the end of the Roman Empire. The title implies a book about painting of classic Celtic culture, a millennium spanning culture famous for it's art. Unfortunately that's not what this book contains. If you are looking for a book describing early Christian art from Irish Bibles this might be an excellent book to buy. It wasn't what I expected after reading the title.

The civilization generally called "Celtic" consisted of a number of culturally related tribes and peoples dispersed across Western Europe. Celtic culture is generally identified by it's artwork including some very fine examples of sculpture, pottery, gold ornamentation, and painting which has been found in graves and other locations from Austria west. Gaul was probably the center of Celtic culture in the centuries when the Celts were strong enough to sack Rome. Many, many fine examples of Celtic art are still found in museums and galleries today. When I opened this book after reading the title I expected to find plates and descriptions of classic Celtic art. The word "CELTIC" is after all printed in huge letters on the top of the cover. Anglo-Saxon art is less well known than Celtic art, and I was curious to learn how Anglo-Saxon art succeeds the Celtic art. After all, the time period of the Anglo-Saxons was later than that of the Celtic culture.

I was seriously disappointed with this book. The works shown in this book are almost entirely from christian bibles other books drawn and inscribed by Christian monks. The script in the plates (the paintings) is Latin or vulgate Latin, not the Celtic Ogham alphabet. Many of the symbols shown in the paintings are said by the author to be of Persian origin. Hello? When did Persian Christian art become Celtic?

I found no examples of art from the historic Celtic culture in this book. Yes, the examples of early Irish Christian bibles were influenced by Celtic artistic history as well as Roman and Persian. I don't really believe that a Persian inspired portrait of Saint Mathew or Jesus is "CELTIC painting," even if the artist was Irish. Missing entirely was art from a thousand years of Celtic culture before and during Roman occupation of Celtic lands. As for Anglo-Saxon painting, you have to look really hard to find where that is even mentioned inside the cover.

Religious Celtic art.......2003-08-04

This book features forty eight color plates that are reproduced in high quality paper from original manuscripts from the seventh and centuries. The author, Carl Nordenfalk, provides a historical background and commentry on each of the plates. The author 's style of writing lends itself well to one not overly knowledgeable of the subject matter. The manuscripts are taken from the Gospel Books which were richly ornate, having almost talismanic qualities having been produced in the native art style of the Celts and Anglo- Saxons as the Christian missionaries were proselytizing in the Bristish Isles. Most of the manuscripts come from the Book of Lindisfarne, the Book of Durrow and the Book of Kells. The manuscripts feature portraits of various Christian messengers such as Saint Luke, Saint John, Saint Chad and biblical figures such as King David, Madonna and Christ. There are also pages of the written word from the various gospels shown in the rich decorative style of the Celts. The looping interlocked letters and motiffs are an amazing contribution to civilization that everyone can enjoy from these ancient, partialy intact codex. The symbols and strange animation create symetrical patterns that are highly imaginative and will astound the viewer with it's complex primitivism. The intrinsic beauty and composition is sometimes in stark contrast to the flatness of the figures. You can literally get lost in the patterns, there are endless oblong patterns of scrollwork, tied together by knots, interwoven and intertwined animals stretching out and connecting to fancy letters or other motiffs that will dazzle your senses. This is a great book to gaze upon and reassure yourself of the beautiful beyond that has inspired many centuries of art work. The book also provides a complete list of color and black and white plates and a selected bibliography for future reference. This is a great book to look at anytime, especially in those tranquil moments of peace and reflection. Recommended for anyone interested in book illumination, Christian art and the similarities between Celtic art from this period and Byzantine and Italian art and the inspiration of the Gospel.
