This biographical study illuminates one of the most important yet misunderstood figures in the history of science. Barbara McClintock (1902-1992), a geneticist who integrated classical genetics with microscopic observations of the behavior of chromosomes, was regarded as a genius and as an unorthodox, nearly incomprehensible thinker. In 1946, she discovered mobile genetic elements, which she called "controlling elements." Thirty-seven years later, she won a Nobel Prize for this work, becoming the third woman to receive an unshared Nobel in science. Since then, McClintock has become an emblem of feminine scientific thinking and the tragedy of narrow-mindedness and bias in science.

Using McClintock's research notes, newly available correspondence, and dozens of interviews with McClintock and others, Comfort argues that McClintock's work was neither ignored in the 1950s nor wholly accepted two decades later. Nor was McClintock marginalized by scientists; throughout the decades of her alleged rejection, she remained a distinguished figure in her field. Comfort replaces the "McClintock myth" with a new story, rich with implications for our understanding of women in science and scientific creativity.

Great book, incredible geneticist.......2002-05-28

After just barely discussing Dr. McClintock's work in my genetics class, I just had to know more. This book is very insightful, and it discusses her work thoroughly. Her use of corn plants in the discovery of jumping genes (transposable elements). Truly an interesting topic and an incredible geneticist who's discovery has no doubt changed all of genetic research. This book gets a bit more in to detail than people may want for just background information. It includes some diagrams of her work, etc. A great book in all that I will add to my library.

Private Lands Management for Wildlife.......2004-08-11

This is one of the best popular books dealing with wildlife management since the late Geogre Burger's book Practical Wildlife Management was published. It is very up-to-date and accurate. The only problem I have, and this is not a fault but a personal issue, is that it promotes specific brand name commercial products pretty heavily. All else aside it is a great book for anyone intested in managing private lands for wildlife.

A Must For Future Exchange Students.......2002-11-04

This is an excellent book for anyone who's going to be an exchange student, as it gives the reader a realistic view of what going on the exchange will really entail. It covers settling in, homesickness, culture shock, making friends, learning the language, getting ready to leave, and "reverse culture shock" -- coming home again. Although not every exchange student may experience the stages in the exact order or extent the author describes, most exchange students will be able to identify with what she's saying. I found it very informative and comforting to read this book before going to Ecuador for a year, and it was also helpful to read during the exchange, simply to know that what seemed like bizarre feelings were really fairly normal for exchange students. Do yourself a favor and read this book before you go, you'll be glad you did. It'll leave you feeling a whole lot less in the dark about what's going to happen during your exchange.

This book provides extremely helpful information about adjusting to life as an exchange student. It has checklists for packing, tips about avoiding cultural mishaps, personal stories, and the stages of getting used to your temporary home. Everything is easy to find and written clearly. A must have for exchange students!

From an exchange student coordinator.......2004-07-24

I am an exchange student coordinator for students that come from very different cultures from the United States. This book was somewhat helpful to me in discovering different ways to explain to families concepts such as "unspoken rules" or how to treat an exchange student within your household, as well as cultural differences.

This book does help families understand their undetected cultural biases in a way that I haven't seen in other publications.

Not all host families work out and I intend to use this book as a resource for families that are having challenges arranging to life with an exchange student.

I have directly supervised 9 students over 1.5 years and indirectly with hundreds more.

Did not reflect our experience at all!.......2002-04-09

I read this book a month or so before our exchange student arrived and, although I didn't believe at the time that it had all the answers, I was not prepared for how utterly useless it was for our family. In contrast to the timeline given in the book, our student seemed to adjust quickly and well, then things got progressively worse as he became more and more comfortable in our home. He started out on his best behavior and ended up completely ignoring our house rules and the cultural norms of the school and community. I'm seriously considering writing my own book and calling it "The Alternative Host Family Survival Guide".

The book "Host Family Survival Kit: A Guide for American Families" was an informative book, but a little hard to read. It also seemed to discuss a lot of negative things that many happen to a host family. The book was not uplifting, and read a lot like a high-school textbook. The book is also very out-of-date, even though it was only published 15 years ago. This book provides adequate information for a prospective host family, but not a must have.

Phone calls from customers are not just "events," but are significant milestones in customer relationships. They include correspondence by mail, by fax, by e-mail, by Internet and "touching" by interactive voice response and computer telephony links. The author has over 20 years intimate experience with call centers. This book also has a 74-page sample Request for Proposal to buy an ACD - automatic call distributor, the central piece of technology in any call center. If you hired a consultant, this RFP would cost you a minimum of $20,000.

Good technical resource, but difficult to follow.......2000-09-08

The information in this book on the technical aspects of call centers is very good. It is an appropriate book for someone who isn't completely new to the topic of calls centers, but needs a more complete picture of the technical side of telephones, ACDs and other tools. However, even though the information is helpful, the book isn't edited very well. I found many typos, grammar errors and punctuation problems. Additionally, it's not organized in a very easy to read manner. I found it difficult to understand the progression from one topic to another. Overall, the topics covered in the book are useful--great information and research before purchasing an ACD. But I'm sure that there are other books out there that provide the same information in a more coherent fashion.
