Though the impact of climate change will most likely be greatest with the already poor and vulnerable populations in the developing world, much of the writing about the costs and benefits of different policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is by Western scholars, working in advanced industrialized economies.
India and Global Climate Change helps address the gap in the literature about climate change policy while acknowledging that India has already had a crucial role in international climate change negotiations. Drawing the majority of its contributions from authors based at Indian universities and other research centers, the book includes diverse approaches toward policy issues such as the energy-economy and forestry relationships that drive GHG emissions; the options and costs for restricting GHG emissions while promoting sustainable development; and the design of innovative mechanisms for expanded international cooperation in GHG mitigation.
With a population of over one billion, and an economy that is undergoing substantial restructuring and greatly increased economic growth after a number of years of stagnation, India has an exceptional stake in the debate about climate change policy. The contributors to India and Global Climate Change hope that their scholarship will inform policymakers and scholars not only about the perspectives of India, but of the broader, developing world.

Disappointing text...but GREAT photos!.......2004-09-14
This book is actually two books in one. The first is the text, which was written by Valerius Geist, and the second is the photos, which were taken by Michael H. Francis. The first book fails badly, but the second is magnificent. Geist's text is so horrifyingly unsatisfactory that it could be used as an example of every mortal sin that an author must avoid. It is grotesquely verbose, condescending, pedantic, and uninformative, and it is stained by an offensively propagandistic tone (the standard "man is evil...nature is good" oversimplification). As though these flaws aren't bad enough, it is shot through-and-through with inappropriate anthropomorphisms and a teleological mindset that is glaringly anti-scientific. These shortcomings completely undermine Geist's embarrassing attempt to pose as the consummate scholar. As a result, I found it painful even to skim the wholly unsatisfactory text. The photographs, by contrast, are superb! Each is a virtual work of art, and as I looked at them, my thoughts alternated between awe and a deep curiosity. How did the photographer get these shots! Surprisingly, the captions for these photos are the best part of the book's text, greatly surpassing Geist's verbose prose with their succinct clarity and relevance. In light of its flaws, is this book worth its price? I don't think so. Francis's photos are truly outstanding, but Geist's text has inflicted mortal wounds.
THE BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN ON ELK!.......2002-07-13
This was a great book. Unlike most wildlife or nature books with boring and dry writing, this book kept me interested and reading the whole time due to the fabulous skill of it's author Valerius Geist who is a very good writer. It is the ultimate reference book on the North American elk. It would be very useful to hunters, naturalists, and photographers, like me. It has everything you would want to know about elks' lives throughout the seasons along with excellent photographs the whole way through from Michael H. Francis. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the origin of our elk, which migrated to North America on the Bering Strait land bridge. Identical elk still live in Russia. And there was also fascinating information in the book about the evolution of the North American elk that led to different sub-species This book also contained great historic and present day range maps of the elk and it tells of the elks' conservation story along with what may be in store for the future of elk. If you were to get one book on elk this would definitely be the one. And if you are interested in other North American big game animal books, Valerius Geist has written many others, such as Antelope Country, Mule Deer Country, and more, which are also available here on Amazon.com.

Having read just about every book on how to putt including Dave Pelz's opus on the technique and physics of the putting stroke, I can truly say this is a fabulous book that anyone who is struggling to become a skilled or just a better putter will benefit from reading. If you are having trouble getting the ball in the hole, if you are suffering from the yips, if you want to have more fun at this game of golf, then you can do no better than to read this book. It is too bad that it has not received the attention it deserves. Someone should find a way to market this book more effectively as it will help most everyone become a better putter and thereby enjoy the game more.
I really have to thank the authors for giving me hope as I was just about to abandon the game that I have played and have enjoyed for so long. BUY THIS BOOK if you are interested in improving this most important aspect of GOLF...you will not be disappointed!!!

If your problem is the mental aspect of putting this book does an excellent job explaining it out for you and offers some great tips. It does not discuss the mechanics of putting. One would need to know that their mechainics are sound first.

Particles are one of the most difficult aspects of the Japanese language. This is precisely why there are a good number of books on the market dealing with the subject. Most of these books take up particles as independent entities, so that after having studies them, students are, if all goes well, familiar with the functions of the individual particles. One unfortunate side to this approach is that some of the particles share the same functions (but with slight differences), and so even though students may have grasped the general nature of each particle, they are not sure about the differences between the particles that have similar functions. Well-known language book author Naoko Chino solves this problem by grouping the particles by function, defining them, giving samples of usage, and clarifying differences. Each section is followed by dual-purpose quizzes that allow readers to test and practice their knowledge. In this way, while not replacing general reference books on particles, this book goes a step beyond them and helps students nail down the troubling differences between particles. For students who find themselves befuddled when confronting such differences, How to Tell the Difference Between Japanese Particles should prove the perfect tool to further their understanding.

This book does a superb job teaching the difference between closely related particles, allowing students to grasp subtle distinctions in meaning and usage.
Chino has written an excellent book - the text is very clear and concise, well organized, and illustrates each point with great examples. Students can study the particles by reading through the book and then reinforcing what they've learned by taking the quizzes at the end of each chapter. Afterwards you can continue to use the book as a handy reference guide.
The book probably isn't suitable for beginner level, as the example sentences are too difficult and many of these particles are beyond the scope of beginners. But intermediate and advanced students will definitely benefit. In the blurb, the author promises to quickly give students a knowledge of the particles that would normally take years speaking Japanese to acquire, and this is no exaggeration.
I strongly recommend this book as a great way to quickly pump up your Japanese grammar.
A must-have guide to a murky area.......2005-07-31
"I sat at the chair." "I went on school today." That is probably what most of us sound like when we start really speaking Japanese, merrily swapping around all those cute little "ni"s, "wa"s, "de"s and "ga"s. It gets even worse at an upper level when the mysterious "hodo"s and "kana"s start rearing their ugly heads. Particles are one of the most confusing aspects of Japanese, and one of the biggest road blocks to conversational fluency.
Every student of Japanese could use "How to Tell the Difference Between Japanese Particles." It is a practical, concise little book that contains a wealth of information. Unlike Naoko Chino's previous particle book, "All About Particles," this volume contains practice exercises and demonstrations of the most common mistakes of Japanese particles. It is more of a workbook, that should be followed from start to finish.
Chino takes several similar but confusing particles, such as "particles indicating time" or "particles used for comparison," then highlights the different usages of each particle, along with demonstration sentences in both English, kana and romaji. Like all good Japanese books, the emphasis is on the kana, with the romaji and English doing support work. After each chapter, there are several quizzes to test your new knowledge. The book closes with an overall test on the entire book.
The comparative nature of this book, along with the repeated quizzes, make "How to Tell the Difference Between Japanese Particles" one of the most useful Japanese study guides that I own. It serves a niche purpose, but a very useful and necessary one.

This is an excellent reproduction of an exquisite manuscript produced during the last phases of the hand-written, hand-illuminated book. The introductory texts are concerned primarily with the history of the two artists responsible for the creation of this work, with some space devoted to its provenence and patron. The majority of pages are, of course, devoted to the plates themselves; no words can do justice to the art displayed therein. Commentary on the plates is mostly limited to identification of the various flora and fauna displayed on the pages
