I really liked the book "Employee Surveys That Make a Difference." During the course of my graduate school career, the book entitled, "Organizational Surveys" was required reading. I like that book as well, but I intend to recommend "Employee Surveys That Make a Difference" as optional reading because it laid out a lot of what "Organizational Surveys" spoke to but in simpler form. Its applicability to practice rather than such a scientific approach is a plus. These two books really complement one another.

This book is probably ten years ahead of its time. That is, in ten years or so, it will be commonplace for evolutionary psychologists and evolutionary biologists to apply sperm competition theory to humans. Shackelford and Pound, however, have already recognized the utility of applying sperm competition theory to humans, and they complied the first volume of this developing literature. There's an original chapter that provides an up to date overview of the field, and the remaining chapters are labeled as "classic and contemporary readings". They're also fascinating and balanced. It's really nice to have all of this work in one place.

An expensive collection of papers.......2006-10-21

This book contains previously published papers about sperm competition in human beings...a substantial number by Baker and Bellis, aswell as some more recent contributions by other authors. Despite the inclusion of more contemporary papers, by evolutionary psychologists in particular, the book does not present a coherent or sufficiently critical overview of the field. It is quite short, and very expensive.It would have been better, perhaps, to have written a book about this topic , in order to produce a much-needed synthesis.

on what makes winners tick. This book is full of interesting
quotes but does not attempt to get into the mind of the
stars it quotes from. It is an interesting read and gives no
new insights and therefore is of limited value.

The threads that weaved through all of these champions seemed to be visualization of the achievement of goals, commitment and focus. It's an atlas-that's as good as it's going to get. It's not meant to conjure any feelings within the reader, it just presents cold hard facts. You take what you want from it; it's not a narrative. You just have to look at the numbers and figures and from there make an interpretation based on what is being given to you. I think it does a good job at presenting facts and figures in an easy to read and at a glance fashion. It's good for what it is.

Really Cool Book.......2005-09-22

This is the latest edition of an atlas that's been out for awhile. With colorful world maps and all sorts of fascinating graphs and charts this book unlocks cultural statistics--from quality of life to where in the world U.S. troops are to who has the most satellites in space. My middle school students love this atlas and will (no kidding!) pick it up and browse through it on their own. I've bought a classroom set and it was money very well spent. If you cover geography, or anything having to do with the world in middle school or high school check out this book.

I was in a bookstore in Toronto and stumbled across the different Dover font books and was instantly in love with all of them. Wisely, my significant other gave me a limit of ONE book to buy. "Fine," I said as I began poking through the books. It didn't take me long to realize which one of the books was superior. Why has economic growth in some transition economies of Eastern Europe and the former Soveit Union been stronger than in others? If economic reforms bring clear benefits for countries in transition, why have some governments been so reluctant to accept them? How should policy advice offered to these countries be modified in the light of experience and today's conditions? Transition--The First Ten Years draws on the World Bank's operational experience and the extensive literature on transition to help address these questions.

This report looks at the policy and institutional conditions that encourage the growth of new firms in transition economies while imposing financial discipline on the old firms inherited from the socialist past, without granting special favors to either. While emphasizing the importance of market-oriented policy reforms, the report also examines political strategies to push the reform process forward in different transition countries.

This book is aimed at policymakers and think tanks in transition countries, external donors and advisors, and all those in the international development community interested in the policy and institutional challenges facing the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

This study looks at lessons to be drawn from the ten-year experience of the transition countries in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union in the period 1991 to 2000. The World's Bank "world Development Report 1996: From Plan to Market" focused on the transition process during the first half of this period. It recognized that while initial conditions are critical, decisive and sustained reforms are important for recovery of growth and should be accompanied by social policies designed to protect the most vulnerable groups until growth takes hold. Many of the prescriptions of the 1996 World Development Report continue to be valid today. The present study confirms that while initial conditions were critical for explaining the output decline at the start of transition, the intensity of reform policies explains the variability in the recovery of output thereafter. Beyond this, important new lessons highlight some key tradeoffs facing countries in transition that can be translated into priorities for policy. First, this study highlights the key role of the entry and growth of new firms in generating economic growth and in creating employment. A second lesson concerns the need to develop or strengthen legal and regulatory institutions to oversee the management and governance of both private and state enterprises. A third lesson involves recognizing that winners from the early stages of reform may oppose subsequent reforms when these reduce their initially substantial benefits.
