Book Description
The world's financial system is crazier and even more out of control than it was ten years ago. Mad Money analyzes the erratic nature of change and innovation in financial business in recent years and discusses the weak points--political as well as economic and technical--of a system driven more by volatile markets than by governments.
The central issue is global finance; "mad money" is how Susan Strange characterizes the alternately rampant and depressed financial markets of recent years. She sets out here to diagnose the sources and nature of the problem of markets having outgrown governments and to examine its social and political ramifications. Opinionated and brilliantly argued, Mad Money will surely provoke controversy and generate many conversations.
Susan Strange's previous book, Casino Capitalism, established her as an authority on international finance and the basic structures of the international political economy. This sequel will reach not only scholars and students but a wider readership, including everyone worried by the yo-yoing of stock markets, the currency turmoil in Asia, and the general mismanagement of money by governments and international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
"In her patented provocative and compelling style, Susan Strange offers us an illuminating, often dark, image of the changing nature of international relations in the next century. Although a liberal at heart, her critical approach in this work challenges many of the central normative assumptions of an unfettered regulatory future of great prosperity and little conflict. This effort represents a cumulative statement of one of the senior scholars of our generation and cannot be ignored." --Simon Reich, University of Pittsburgh
"Chutzpah! That's what Susan Strange has long demonstrated in her research, teaching, and writing. Even those who see the world differently will respect what she has accomplished here." --Louis W. Pauly, University of Toronto
Susan Strange is Professor of International Political Economy, University of Warwick.

Complexities of global economics deciphered.......2000-10-12
The global economy, especially those aspects dealing with global finance, often appear to be intimidating in their complexity. Susan Strange decodes processes of finance and monetary policy and puts them in terms that just about anyone can understand. There is, in fact, nothing that complex about these processes at all. The metaphor of "casino capitalism" still holds...and they are playing with your money. One would do well to read this in combination with a book by George Soros. Comprehensive, but readable. A great book.

The best book on the subject of agricultural drip irrigation.......1999-02-07
Anyone wanting to learn how to design agricultural drip irrigation systems should definitely read and use this book. I have been designing ag drip/micro systems for nearly ten years and this is the best and most practical book I have seen on the subject. Has excellent coverage of hydraulics as well as filtration and the design of flushing manifolds. Also has lots of practical information gleaned from grower panels and interviews with top people in the industry. This book is used as a text by the Irrigation Association in its training programs for those preparing to take its Certified Drip/Micro Irrigation Designer exam.

For busy gardeners, the prospect of continually dragging out hoses to water the garden can be a real disincentive to gardening. Often, the installation of an irrigation system appropriate to the needs of the garden can be a huge time and energy saver, and provide the appropriate and timely water that all plants need in differing amounts at different times. Starting with "The Basics of Home Irrigation," readers will learn if an irrigation system is appropriate for their needs and which one (or combination of systems) works best. Next, "Getting Started" discusses which kinds of systems can be installed and how they work. The final section of the book is "Using and Repairing an Irrigation System."
Just about everything one needs to know is included here: troubleshooting and problem solving, customizing designs for an irrigation system, buying guides to components, and thorough, well-diagrammed how-to instructions made clear by helpful color photographs and detailed diagrams. --Mark A. Hetts
Book Description
Outlines irrigation options available to homeownersfrom fully automated sprinklers for a large yard to simple manual drip systems for balcony plants.
Explains sprinkler systems and how to install them.
Includes a section on maintenance and repairs.
Customer Reviews:
Good Starter Text.......2006-04-11
I've never done any irrigation work until recently. So I took a one day course from a pro and bought this book. Since a one day course can't cover all contingencies, I found that this book filled in a lot of gaps. My interest has mainly been in drip systems, not sprinklers. I now have a good working knowledge and sound like less of a fool when I order stuff from experts.
BTW, I think with this book and all the free specialized information on the Internet, most folks don't have to go much further to study the subject.
Does not tell how to install a sprinkler system........2005-06-08
Far too basic. If you want a glossy introduction to sprinklers, but have no plans to actually install a system, this is the book for you.
If you want to install a sprinkler system, there are maybe 5 pages of useful information in this book, and not near enough detail to actually break ground. Find another source of information.
A Pretty Good Basic Book.......2002-11-24
Just like most fields, irrigation is evolving quickly as regards new materials, products and standards. Overall, I feel the Ortho book gives good solid information for a do - it - yourselfer. There was no "BAD" information per se, and it does demystify the home irrigation system. You can save a lot of money installing your own system. You can also cause a lot of damage doing it incorrectly. This book can give you a good idea whether you can tackle installing a system or not. Use this book along with careful planning, to know what questions to ask either a sprinkler supply distributor or to hire an irrigation contractor.
overall good coverage, could have been more detailed.......2002-09-05
Book does a pretty good job at hitting all the points in planning and installing your irrigation system. Installing a system kind of feels like a major undertaking at first, but after reading the book I feel pretty comfortable about it (although I've only begun my installation, guess we'll see if things stay nice and comfy). I liked some of the side points in the book where it went into a little more detail about certain aspects of the job, however, in other areas I felt there should have been more detail. Book seemed like it might be a little dated as a few topics seemed to stick with more old-school standards (e.g., poly-pipe is now used in many new areas to hook-up from the meter to the house, but the book assumed that you would only find copper, galvenized steel, or PVC (stiff white) pipe for this application). I also think a book like this should provide as many "common mistakes" as possible, this books only has a few.
Although my gut feeling says 3 stars, I have to upgrade to 4 because there isn't that many books our there like this one and relative to those it seems to be a winner.
A little to basic.......2001-07-04
Although I am stating that this book is a little to basic, maybe what I was looking for was just more then this book was intended to deliver. I was looking for a book to help calculate how many zones were needed, what type of sprinkler heads, etc. This book had great photographs and basic knowledge. If you are ready to design and install your own system you might want a more detailed book.

Customer Reviews:
A Bit Disappointing.......2007-07-12
I have recently decided to equip my front and back gardens with drip irrigation, and was seeking some high-quality advice on the use of different types of emitters and sprinklers, as well as some saavy tips on setting up a system. What I got was a minimal discussion of the most basic aspects of drip irrigation. More space was spent on sprinkler systems (I should have guessed from the title). There was really nothing in here that I could not easily figure out myself.
It could be useful to someone who is absolutely clueless about drip irrigation.
I have said it before, and I find myself saying it again: Sunset Books have gone downhill. The new editions of their books are redone with scads of garden photographs. Gone are the highly instructional illustrations that used to characterize their books. If I can get previous editions of their books, I will do that. Unfortunately, drip technology is so recent that there really is no previous book by Sunset that covers it.
I doubt if I will ever order a Sunset book online again, but only from a store where I can look through it beforehand.

Its ok.......2005-07-29
I am not a big book reader, but I got this based on suggestions since I wanted to do drip irrigation. As a book it is fine. If you are looking to do drip irrigation and just want something to cover how to do it in the best fashion then this is your book. I personally was looking for something that would cover each component and its options, pros, cons, etc. This book seems more focused on the authors specific way.
Still a good book.......2004-07-21
I always recommend this book, expecially to people who've recently moved from "back East" to California. I couldn't have set up my drip irrigation system without it, even though I had done some tech-writing work for an agricultural research institute.
Drip Irrigation gets down to nuts and bolts.......2000-12-28
This is a very helpful book for the gardener who wants to actually install a drip irrigation herself. The author goes into specifics about how to test your soil so you know how water moves through it and you can calculate how much water you'll need to apply, and he talks (somewhat unsuccessfully for my complete understanding) about transpiration rates for various types of plant, so you can kind of figure out how much water your plants actually use, and he gives a primer in the various components of a drip system. Basically he is teaching plumbing, horticulture, and geology just enough to help a novice design and install a drip system without hiring a pro. The best part, in my opinion, is the fact that in the back of the book there is a form for ordering the components, and it includes the option to purchase a main assembly fully assembled so I don't really need to master all that plumbing skills I might have had to master. This book is certainly worth its price. Be advised, however, I have an older version of this book, so I don't know if the current edition has the wonderful order form.
Some useful information but somewhat outdated.......2000-04-11
This book had some useful information, but it seemed somewhat out of date and had very little about automatic systems.
A wealth of straightforward, understandable information........1999-02-22
Concise and to the point, this clearly illustrated book is the definitive work or proper irrigation and an absolute must for any serious gardener.

Great Book.......2004-12-03
I LOVE this book. Although I have been a student at LSU for four years now, I had never heard many of the facts in this book. Also, unless I'm mistaken, when the author came to speak at our Air Force Association meeting, he said that part of the proceeds from the book would go to the building of a new habitat for Mike the Tiger on campus. Luckily, for Mike, the university and Tiger Athletic Foundation have recently announced that they have raised the total amount and Mike has been moved off campus to start work on the new habitat. As such, I am not sure what the proceeds will go to now, but I would assume to they would go to pay for Mike's care while he is being house at the Zoo.
Not bad.......2004-05-06
I have nearly every book written on LSU and this had little new info on Mike The Tiger. However, it is a good coffee table book.
I recommend Chris Warner's (LSU grad) "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football." It's good.

Back to the roots of Okinawa Karate and Kobudo.......2004-06-14
Sensei Tetsuhiro Hokama 9.Dan Karate Hanshi is one of the most intersting Okinawa masters of the present time. 60 Years old, he is also a master of callgraphy. In March 2004 I went to Okinawa Nishihara to learn in his Dojo during an intern.Congress of Vascalar Surgery in Ginowan. After reading his wonderful book I understood much more of Karate Do and Kobudo. I practise Karate since more than 30 years. His knowledge of Bubishi and about Okinawa Karate History is convincing. He learned from famous masters such as Seiko Higa, Sinpo Matayoshi and Fukushi. For example his version of the Bo Kata Ufugusuku no Kun is very interesting. He learned this Kata from his grandfarther, who was the nabour of Mr.Ufugusuku(Nick name Oshiro). Probably it is the original Kata of Ufugusuku. The book of Tetsuhiro Hokama contains a lot of historical details of Okinawa Karate and Kobudo you never can read in other books. Its his authentic Okinawan Martial Art Knowledge. He wrote ten other books, predominantly in Japanese Language. His book about bubishi was in Japan a bestseller. P.Mc Carthy got inspirations out of this book during his stay in Okinawa when he wrote about the secrets of Bubishi by himself. Tetsuhiro got one of the rare original documents about Bubishi from his master Seiko Higa. The book History and Traditions of Okinawan Karate of Master Hokama gives a wonderful overview of the time since the beginning of Okinawa Te. For his historical investigations he got the title of a Doctor phil. of a foreign University. His book must be read of all friends and artists of Japanese Martial Arts intersted in authentic history.

Meat and Potatoes for Hungry History Buffs.......2003-05-12
Tetsuhiro Hokama is one of the most prolific writers on the history of Okinawa martial arts. Unfortunately for most of us, the majority of his books are written in Japanese! This volume is a noteable exception, having been translated by Cezar Borkowski. It is formatted well, and includes samples of Hokama's flowing calligraphy throughout, along with translations.
This volume is divided into two sections and eight chapters. The first includes three parts dealing with the history of Okinawa no Karate: Origins of Martial Arts, Martial Arts Pioneers, and The Evolution of Modern Martial arts. All three sections deal exclusively with Okinawan fighting arts and teachers, and there are plenty of photographs throughout, many which have NOT been published in other books on Okinawa karate.
The second section deals with training, and includes 5 Training Guide sections and one kata demonstrated by Hokama. The training guide section (pages 103-151) is a sort of appendix offers the reader a sampling of different aspects of Okinawa bujutsu. It will show the reader--but is not a teaching tool per se.
Section 1 includes 3 excerpts from the Ekkinkyogi on physical practice and internal power. Part 2 covers "kappo" rescusitation techniques (8 methods, includes photos-demonstrated by Wally Jay). Part 3 covers kempo training methods (hand-hardening/"Iron Hand") and includes the complete Seisan (shorin-ryu) kata demonstrated by Hokama himself (52 photos). Part 4 covers kakie, two man body-hardening exercises, and includes 3 specific methods.
Part 5 is perhaps the most unique: it offers a comparison between traditional Okinawa dance, and the Okinawa martial art "Ti". The martial artist is shown standing side by side with an Okinawan dance master, in nearly identical postures. then an application from this postude is demonstrated.
Hokama's book will serve Okinawa karate history buffs. Likewise, an individual with no experience in martial arts who is seeking information concerning this specific area of Okinawa's history will find this book an informative aid.

A really good treatment of a complex history.......2007-03-14
This book does an excellent overview job on the "big picture" of the growth and development of Karate, including how it has spread in the United States. Some of the statements about other martial arts reflect some small bias on the part of the author, but that is minor and understandable. The book serves to answer most basic questions a reader might have, like "Who first taught this-or-that", or "Where was the first school?" and things like that. I don't mean to imply that this book is basic, or superficial. The history is complete and detailed, and covers a large time period. Any dojo owner or teacher out there needs to read this book to intelligently answer questions raised by students and lay people.
Martial Arts content and education has changed so much over the last, say, fifteen years that this book serves as the model for other studies that need to be made. The book is readable without sacrificing accuracy or clarity, complete, coherent (i.e., it keeps its focus consistently), and logically arranged. Anyone that wants to publish work that amplifies or follows up this work would do well to study its composition. Thank goodness this history was compiled when it was, before so much could be lost or forgotten.
A believable source for MA history .......2006-03-10
Martial Arts history is so intertwined with myth and legend, that its hard to separate true historical facts. This book does a good job of pointing out when parts of the traditional history are likely to be just fictional, yet also pays respect to a very eastern perspective; sometimes myth represents better the essence of the idea than a myriad of facts, which are by nature, disjoint and subjective.
A Clasic Text.......2000-01-11
A Clasic Text treasured by Martial Artist for over twenty years, Karate's History & Traditions was long recognized as the most authoritative source on martial arts history and technique. Now Bruce Haines, historian and martial artist, has updated this rich source to reflect changes that have taken place in the last two decades.

The Craft of Scientific Writing
ASIN: 1573561657 |
Book Description
The growth of the Internet, online journals, new software packages, computer networks â these and other facets of science writing can be found in the new edition of Robert A. Dayâs How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper. Day has also expanded the section on poster preparation and presentation. The author helps good scientists become good writers by providing a practical guide to the process of writing, organising, illustrating, and submitting scientific research for publication in a scholarly scientific journal. The bookâs chapters are arranged according to the sequence of necessary steps for the submission and publication of a scientific paper. Day also discusses review writing, conference reports and theses, oral presentations, permissions and ethical issues, how to avoid jargon, and, finally, abbreviations and grammar. The book concludes with six appendices and a glossary of technical terms.
Customer Reviews:
good book.......2006-03-23
im sure this book would be better if i actually used it; and i have a strong sense that I will in the near future.
Good shopping place for Books.......2005-08-11
Good Book for English scientific paper writing.
Safe and good web-shop.
International dilivery is not as quick as imagined.
too basic to be helpful.......2005-02-11
It's good to know how an editor think about the scientific writing, but practically the book is not helpful if you want to learn writing rather than editing. The author has never written scientific papers by himself. He has no idea how to orgnize the data and make a convincing story.
I have read many beautiful scientific papers in prestigeous journals. How come those authors have not written a book??
Also Day's book is too old. Now day nobody would like to draw graphs if there is software available.
Consise, to the point, and not boring - how papers should be.......2004-12-24
This book is a treasure for all scientists, particularly graduate students. The author covers each detail of writing a paper in its own chapter in a consise, clear and sometimes funny way. I recommend this book as a basic reference, if you need more help in one area, then consult other books.
High readability, invaluable information.......2004-10-03
I read this book in one morning, and I instantly felt less apprehensive about writing my manuscript. Day writes in a reassuring, humorous tone, and the information is concise and easily applied. This book will help anyone write a manuscript, develop a poster, compose a literature review, and be an effective communicator. The appendices are a brilliant resource on abbreviations, common errors, and other useful information.
And to the individual who stated that those with a background in English shouldn't advise for science: I have a B.A. in English literature, and am currently doing graduate work in the field of science. Hate to break it to you, buddy, but there isn't a formidable barrier between the two schools of science and arts. This pompous, condescending attitude will prove to be a disadvantage for you.
My B.A. has been an invaluable resource for writing in the scientific field. I agree with Day's perspective on communication skills being the downfall of many scientists. Many of my science professors desperately need an editor for the pitiful examples they force us to try learning from. All too often I've encountered my peers in scientific fields turning their noses up at those with an arts background. It is a beautiful example of poetic justice when I read their writing.

I you like birds..........2004-02-06
This book instructs very little, and most of the examples are birds, birds and more birds. Well, I'm no ornithologyst and I know that this book could have diversified more on the examples session. Buy this only if you have a thing for drawing birds.
