We have previously shown that C57BL/6J-Min/+ (multiple intestinal neoplasia) mice, heterozygous for the Min mutation in the adenomatous polyposis coli gene, were more susceptible to intestinal tumorigenesis and had higher intestinal PhIP-DNA adduct levels after exposure to the food mutagen 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) on day 12 than on day 36 after birth [I.-L. Steffensen, H.A.J. Schut, J.E. Paulsen, A. Andreassen, J. Alexander, Intestinal tumorigenesis in multiple intestinal neoplasia mice induced by the food mutagen 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine: perinatal susceptibility, regional variation, and correlation with DNA adducts, Cancer Res. 61 (200l) 8689-8696]. In the present study, we have evaluated further whether this difference in susceptibility is related to adduct formation/removal, cell proliferation, apoptosis or expression of the nucleotide excision repair protein Xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA) in the intestines. Min/+ and +/+ (wild-type) mice were given a subcutaneous injection of 50mg/kgbw PhIP on day 12 or 36, and the levels of PhIP-DNA adducts after 8, 12, 24h, 3 or 7 days were quantified by use of ^3^2P-postlabelling. In Min/+ mice, adduct levels were significantly higher after exposure on day 12 than on day 36 in the middle (1.5- to 8.5-fold) and distal (1.3- to 6.5-fold) small intestine from 8h to 3 days after administration of PhIP, but not in the colon and proximal small intestine. In the liver - a non-target organ for PhIP - adduct levels were 2.0- to 7.5-fold higher after exposure on day 12 than on day 36 from 8 to 24h after exposure. Adduct levels were generally higher in the middle (1.1- to 1.8-fold) and distal (1.1- to 2.0-fold) small intestines of Min/+ compared with +/+ mice after PhIP exposure on day 12, i.e. in the area of the intestines previously found also to have the highest number of tumors in Min/+ mice. PhIP increased cell proliferation and the number of apoptotic cells in the intestine and liver. However, the higher susceptibility to intestinal tumorigenesis in Min/+ mice exposed to PhIP at early age, or in Min/+ mice compared with +/+ mice, could not be explained by differences in cell proliferation, apoptosis or expression of the XPA repair protein.

Cooking oil fumes (COF) have been shown to be associated with lung cancer incidence in Chinese women. Our recent report indicates that inhibitor of apoptosis protein 2 (IAP2) induced by COF may contribute to the survival and proliferation of A549 lung cancer cells. In this study, to further verify whether other antiapoptosis proteins including IAP1, X-linked IAP (XIAP), and survivin, were linked with lung cancer cell survival and proliferation, these IAPs expressions in A549 cells after treatment with COF and its two major components, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and 2,4-decadienal (2,4-DDE) were evaluated by Western blotting. Our data showed that IAP2 was significantly induced by COF, BaP, and 2,4-DDE, but XIAP was decreased by COF and 2,4-DDE, but not by BaP. Even though different effects of COF and 2,4-DDE on IAP2 and XIAP protein expressions were observed, the caspase-3 expression was diminished by COF and 2,4-DDE. In addition, induction of IAP2 and phosphorylated Akt proteins by COF and 2,4-DDE were simultaneously abolished by LY294002. Flow cytometry and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) analysis showed that the proportion of A549 cells at the S-phase was increased significantly after treatment with COF or 2,4-DDE. The cell proliferation induced by COF is associated with the attenuation of p21^C^i^p^/^W^a^f^1 expression. Therefore, increases of IAP1, IAP2, survivin, and cyclin D1 expressions and decreases of XIAP, caspase-3, and p21 expressions might partly contribute to the survival and proliferation of lung cancer cells after exposure to 2,4-DDE and COF. In conclusion, the lung cancer cell growth promoted by COF might support previous epidemiological reports indicating that exposure of COF was associated with lung cancer development among Chinese women.

If you've ever dreamed of the Africa of old, the "classic" Safari days of endless game and gentlemen hunters, this is your book. Robert Ruark is genuis, from the opening page you are drawn into the book page after page, you will lose sleep until you are finished with this gem because you simply won't want to put it down ! It is almost as is if you can smell & hear the Africa Ruark describes, and "feel" the charge of a Cape Buffalo , Lion or Leopard. You will want to read this book again & again & it just get's better each time. The only book Ruark wrote that might garner a higher rating is "Horn of the Hunter", on a personal suggestion by Harry Selby ( Ruarks friend & "White Hunter", a professional hunter without parallel ). You will NOT be dissapointed with "Use Enough Gun" or "Horn of the Hunter" ..

I found a first printing of this book in an obscure little shop and being an avid reader of african hunting books i picked it up.As I began to read it i could not put it down until it was finished,and i might add it took my breath.Ruark put his superb writing talent to good use in telling of his adventures hunting buffalo and africa's other exciting game.

This book perhaps contains the cream of the crop, utilizing pieces of other works. If you have no other work of Ruark's, you would enjoy this one. The best part for me was a small section of magazine articles (not footnoted as to actual date and publication) that I haven't found elsewhere.

Its easy to put yourself alongside the fire with Bob as you read, look through his eyes, and feel the bite of thorns, and the pride in shooting well, and the reward of matching wits with Mbogo.

The true African safari is slowly but surely diminishing but will forever be imprisoned by Ruarks great flair for describing the hunt and Africa as it once was. Use Enough Gun will keep the true old African hunting safari alive forever.

I'm not sure what the other reviewers found so compelling. I found little here other than pages and pages of lists. Some examples: 6pp. of LAPD police radio codes, 3pp. of FBI case classifications, 16pp. of org charts for the LA County Sherrif's Dept. My favorite, however, is the full page devoted to a listing of "Weapons Used by Criminals" which begins "Acid, Air gun, Ax, Bayonet, Bazooka, Billy Club..." Well, you get the idea. The portions of the book not devoted to lists tend to be laughably superficial (e.g., "Street gangs now battle over who sells the drugs and where." Really, thanks.) Granted, there are suggestions for further reading, but my advice would be to save yourself some money and do your readers a favor -- do your own research.

Spice up your writing.......2004-01-05

I don't usually write crime novels, but when I decided to try my hand at suspence I realized just how much help I needed. I searched through many reference books and found The Crime Writers Reference Guide by Martin Roth to be a savior for me. It gives great tips on investigating, cops, the courts, illegal drugs, the prison system and crime. A handy book to have by your computer when you need to amp up a scene or two or just need to be factual. I found the investigation, crime and prison chapters to be especially helpful. Plus, at the end of each chapter is a "Where to go from here" that gives you extra resources to look up, so you don't have to stop with this book and you have the titles and authors of others to investigate. A great companion to this book is one I found by accident titled "Crime Scene" by Larry Ragle. I wrote a review on that one too, so go there and check that out.

As a screenwriter, there's a slew of reference guides available...but I must say this one is really a must-have. Regardless if you are writing an article, novel, non-fiction, TV or film-- if it has any reference to crime in it at all - do yourself a favor and pick up this guide. Because I do not have "Criminal/police" info readily available, this guide allows me (and my characters) to sound more credible and authentic. Another item I'd like to mention is the layout -- very easy to refer to -- lists of crimes, motives, firearms, etc. Saves me time and enhances my stories! Great book -- Highly recommend.

This is an excellent book for those looking to create celtic designs.

This book teaches about the development of illumination. It then goes into the major initials, decorated alphabet, decorated ampersands, the animal alphabet and animal ampersands.

The book is best used when accompianied by Aidan's other Celtic Design books. I have 7 of the books in this series and love them all!
