Excellent. Another masterpiece. A must have........2005-03-26

I have just finished to read the book in a first reading. This second edition of the book is another masterpiece of the Prof. Conroy. The book is updated and it includes all the aspects of the human evolution, from the plio-pleistocene world to our modern origins. Notable the number of figures, schemes, diagrams and tables present in the book. The book is so updated that it includes the recent dwarf species Homo floresiensis.
Any sort of australopithecus and any sort of homo are included. This is a serious book for the one that really wants to learn the human evolution. I currently think it it is the best. If you purchase it you won't repent of it.

Easy to use. Descriptive. Helpful to know which hikes to take and the difficutly of each hike as well as the highlights associated with each.

Very comprehensive.......2000-05-09

A very comprehensive and detailed guide to many of the lesser known trails (as well as the more known ones). Many of the maps are good, some are clearly lacking detail; however, it allows the natural sense of adventure to flourish in the beautiful environs. The book provides a wonderful overview of the area when the chapters are put together. Mike's directional ordering made it very easy to connect one trail with another for a day of small hikes or a day of longer hikes. I traveled too late to stay at any of the backcountry campsites covered; however, we did follow some of the hikes to/from, and they were incredible. I highly recommend travelling to this area immediately after Labor Day as there are fewer crowds.

I am a history buff and I also liked these books.......2006-07-27

These books are good, even if you are really interested in historical accuracy. The great thing about them is they can really inspire one to do their own research and learn themselves about what was going on during that time. The interactions between the characters and famous historical figures aren't factual, of course, but the major events are accurate. These books really inspired me to do my own research and to visit the cities that the characters inhabit. I really enjoyed reading them, so if you love history, don't let the fiction aspect scare you away, it often serves as a fun backdrop in which real learning can take place.

A MUST READ, MUST BUY!.......2003-05-26

I have only recently been introduced to Bodie Thoene, but I became an instant fan with Vienna Prelude. Some of the twists in the book had my mouth dropping open. In the world of espionage, you don't know who to trust and who not to--these books brought that alive. They are written about a time before even my parents were born, and it's mouth-droolingly interesting to see what could have happened in this totally foreign world. I've never read anything like these and am in the process of buying all of Thoene's books. I'm even buying for my mother and telling everyone else about them. OUTSTANDING READ!

Must Read.......2002-08-22

Vienna Prelude is the first book in an amazing series. The characters are intriguing and Thoene's ability to show the struggle of the Jewish resistance in pre-WWII Europe is incredible.

Am I the only one to criticize these books?.......2002-01-18

I'll say that the books are interesting. They definitely have that in their favor. However, I have just finished reading some of the other online reviews for the Zion Covenant Series, and it seems that everyone loved them instantly, without finding anything to criticize about them. Well, I'll give you a more critical opinion to help guide you in your book purchases:

If you DON'T care for books in which....
1. ...the characters are very stereotypical;
2. ...the authors take great liberties with the thoughts, words, and actions of actual historical figures and make them say and do things that you know they never did, or would have done;
3. ...the main characters are great pals with the actual historical figures, and are rich, are beautiful, are witty- in short, have absolutely everything they need to accomplish the story and aren't very believable;
4. ...the plot isn't believable;
Then, these books might not be just right for you.

Yes, the books are very interesting. The plots aren't very believable, but they are interesting. The history contained in them is written well, and the books are worth reading for that alone. Unfortunately, these books are more of the same historical fiction in which overall unbelievability prevails, and that spoiled the books for me. Now, if you are not picky about having great people in history meddled with (for example, at one point in the third book Winston Churchill gets involved in a plot to kidnap the heroine, because she would be so exceedingly valuable as a spy for the Allies), and you don't worry about the other points in my list either, then you probably will like the books. For reading for amusement, they are fine. But if you want really great historical fiction, I wouldn't suggest the Zion Covenant.

If you start reading this series, you will not be able to put the books down! Against the backdrop of pre-WWII Europe, the Thoenes create characters that are true to life, and that you can't help but root for -- or against. These books are incredibly well-researched and well written, and a great investment of your time and money. You won't be disappointed!

This book leaves Romeo and Juliet in the dust! If I were a movie director,(which I very well may end up being) I would definitely make a movie out of it! The characters are very endearing!

I've read almost this whole series and i'm addicted. I love the characters and am engrossed in the history. The only thing that I didn't like was that the first two books were much better than the others. 4-6 were interesting but not page turners like 1 and 2. 3 seemed to be just a linking book not all that great. Overall this series deserves praise.

Without a doubt, these books by the Thoenes are the best works of historical fiction that I have ever read. Through the experiences of the books' characters, you will become a witness to the world events leading up to the Second World War and the establishment of the State of Israel. These books are fun and easy to read, and provide a very accurate historical background for WWII. You will not be able to put these books down!!!

I also recommend the Zion Chronicles series and the Zion Legacy series.

Some of the best books I've ever read........1999-09-13

These books were so well researched and the characters were fascinating. One thing about Bodie's books is that they are not predictable. One never knows who may die or be arrested or what! After reading this series, I went to the library and checked out books and videos on this time period. I learned so much. I have read all six of the books several times and even picked Elisa as the name for our fourth baby. (But it was a boy! I couldn't bring myself to name him Murphy.) Now you have to read the books to find out who they are! One note: Christian Book Distributors sell this set for 39.95! A real Bargain!

I have read these books soooooo many times. They are exciting even on the tenth time round!! I would recommend them to anyone, whether you like history, romance, adventure, or anything...it's got all of it. They are cool. Very cool. WICKED!!! READ THEM!!!!!!!!!!

I loved these books, I became so involved with the characters that when I came to the last page I almost cried. I have to get the rest of the books. I can hardly wait to start reading Zion Chronicles. Brock and Brodie captured me, they made me become more aware of the horrible reality of WW11. I will never forget.

Made in Rome around A.D. 400, the Vatican Vergil is the most famous and the most attractive illustrated book surviving from classical antiquity. David H. Wright introduces this masterpiece of late antique art and shows why it is such an impressive example of the new form of book, the codex, that replaced the traditional papyrus roll and permitted more elaborate illustrations. Here are thirty-two of the most interesting illustrations from the Vatican Vergil, reprinted in full color from the 1980 facsimile published in Graz, Austria, in collaboration with the Vatican Library. Facing each reproduction is the appropriate text from Vergil, in Latin and in English, together with explanatory comments.
Wright discusses how the manuscript was made, describing the style of the capital script and of the illustrations as well as their sources in older classical traditions. He examines the Vatican Vergil as an example of the revival of classical culture in pagan circles in Rome at a time when Christian authority was systematically suppressing pagan religion. Finally, he surveys the "afterlife" of the codex, tracing how the work was studied and copied first in the Carolingian era and then in the Italian Renaissance. All the illustrations not reproduced in color are given at full size in black and white in a concluding list of the illustrations that have survived in this unique masterpiece.
