The book emphasizes ecology, concentrating on why wild dogs fare poorly in protected areas that maintain healthy populations of lions, hyenas, or other top carnivores. In addition to conservation issues, it covers fascinating aspects of wild dog behavior and social evolution. The Creels use demographic, behavioral, endocrine, and genetic approaches to examine how and why nonbreeding pack mates help breeding pairs raise their litters. They also present the largest data set ever collected on mammalian predator-prey interactions and the evolution of cooperative hunting, allowing them to account for wild dogs' prowess as hunters.

By using a large sample size and sophisticated analytical tools, the authors step well beyond previous research. Their results include some surprises that will cause even specialists to rethink certain propositions, such as the idea that wild dogs are unusually vulnerable to infectious disease. Several findings apply broadly to the management of other protected areas.

Not the only African Wild Dog book.......2003-04-03

No, this is NOT the only book on the African Wild Dog, although yes it is a good one and well worth the money. I'd have to also recommend the one by McNutt, I believe it's called Dispelling the Myths of the African Wild Dog. McNutt has been studying these misunderstood dogs for many many years, and is one of the leading researchers. His book has lots of information about a particular pack he was studying, plus lots of info on the dogs in general, and has GREAT photos...some of the best AWD pictures I've seen.

That's not just a compliment. It's a literal fact. There is no other book dedicated to wild dogs. Not in print. Probably not at all. And if we're to be "stuck" with just one publication, it is sheer pleasure to be stuck with this one. Highly readable, engaging, informative... robust science, excellent documentation, interesting and mind-expanding explanations and statistics... There's no other book out there, but even if there were, it would be hard pressed to meet this publication for quality and readability. Five stars. Worth every penny.

Great Book!!!.......2007-05-15

This is an excellent review of many of the details that only a coach and his wrestlers see and feel everyday. I definately think anyone who is a fan, parent, coach or participant of wrestling, and especially college wrestling should read this great book.

Not a wrestler, barely a fan..........2007-03-16

...but you can't help but be taken in by the story of Dan Gable. The lessons that he preaches, and embodies, go way beyond the mat--perserverance, hard work, dedication, and perhaps most importantly, leading by example.

For that reason, I enjoyed the book, and got through it pretty quickly. I would have no reservations about recommending this book based on that alone.

But, I'll admit, it gets bogged down quite a bit as it becomes a point-by-point recap of the season. Starts to feel like the same things over and over again. I'll agree with other posters who say that it may have lacked some of the intensity and emotion that it could have had. For that, I would recommend "Four days to Glory." An awesome book on high-school wrestling that seems to be to do a better job of making you feel the drama of what wrestlers go through and why they do what they do.

I'd say buy both of these books for a pretty complete picture of Iowa wrestling "from cradle to grave." The afterword in the paperback version of "A season on the mat" does a good job of bringing closure to both books (hard to explain, but you'll see what I mean).

"Simply the best".......2002-05-09

"A Season on the Mat" is simply the best book about the greatest wrestler and coach ever to grace the the mat. You will lose yourself as you read about Gable's struggles in pursuing yet another NCAA title. Read about how Gable sucked up the pain for one final season and set an example for the 1996 Hawks. Buying this book is the best way a fan can remember DG's final year on the sidelines.

Good, not great.......2001-11-08

As an ex-wrestler turned journalist (and someone who has interviewed Dan Gable), Zavoral's book is a decent look into Gable and the Iowa program. However, the writer at times tries to be bigger than his subject(s) using silly similies(describing Lincoln McIlravy's wrestling style as a man probing an ear or corn) and far flung analogies. The book also lacks logic in some areas, but does a good job of explaining the nuances of amateur wrestling to the uninitiated -- which is no easy task. Typos are also pretty prevalent, but that's the editor's job to catch it.

This book is a must for the hardcore wrestling fan. I am not a fan, but was won over by the dedication and intensity it takes to excel. Gable is a complex man, but he loved his kids and pushed them to do their best. I would have loved to compete for him.

Almost there.......2007-07-12

This anthology has a great selection of poetry ranging from well-known classics to little known modern gems. The series comes with the most helpful Instructor's Resource Manual that I've ever used.

The book has excellent sections on how to approach different genres. It's well organized and easy to work with. I especially like the sections on how to write different types of papers.

Unfortunately I probably won't use the book again because our school has a diverse student population and the authors chosen for this book do not reflect that range of voices and experience.

The book it self has many good short stories, poems, and drama plays. However the book pages are very thin and are easy to rip. Overall the entire book is a good book to be lectured from.

It's a text book........2007-04-30

It's a literature text book. that's about it. it has that nice new book smell. and that's the only advantage it has. if you have to buy the book, just get it unless you're confident you can find all the stories online or at your school library for free. Myea, nothing special here.

Also if you're a lazy student, keep in mind that this thing is a good 2 or so inches thick and kinda heavy.

I used this book for a college literature class. It is a great book, I loved most all of the short stories, plays, poems and more. I only thing is that before buying this book look for past ed. I bought this one not knowing that I had the book in the ed. before. The cover is different but that is all my friend had the older book and was just fine, Save some money.

A well rounded literature textbook.......2000-12-07

We used this book in my literature class, and I should say that I am not a fan of literature classes, but this book was very surprising. It contains short stories, poems, and plays like any other text, but if offers a wide variety of topics for selection by the professor or the student based on personal preferences or educational objectives. For instance, when working with poetry, students may choose from a variety of poems from baseball to romance. It is all there! Another example would be the short stories in the text; they range from stories of military experience to Asian family traditions. It is not only a literature book, but also a book of culture and variety. It is so well rounded it should appeal to all types of personalities, likes, and dislikes.

disappointing!.......2000-07-28

I bought this book thinking that it would not only show the alphabets, but also give some other sort of information, more like a calligraphic instructional book. It is nothing but a dry, plain, book that shows pictures of very plain alphabets. Something you can get on the font list on your computer. I really don't know what use this book would serve.
