Book Description
According to Philip Parker, the relationship between physics-based physiology and macroeconomics may come to dominate explanations of economic growth. His argument focuses on the so-called equatorial paradox--the phenomenon that a country's latitude explains up to 70 percent of cross-country variances in per capita income. After introducing concepts from physics and physiology as the building blocks of homeostatic utility, he explains the role of homeostatic utility in economic growth. Specifically, he shows that a country's performance is gauged not by its absolute level of income or consumption, but by how far it is from a homeostatic steady state governed by what he calls physioeconomics. Countries closer to their homeostatic steady state grow more slowly than those farther away.
Parker shows how factors such as income, aggregate savings, investment, technology, entrepreneurship, production, and outputs per worker are influenced by the more fundamental principles of physics and physiology. He focuses particularly on the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that drives motivation, monitors homeostasis, and ultimately keeps us alive via neural, autonomic, and hormonal adjustments. He presents evidence that long-run growth can be attributed to variances in hypothalmic activity.
A physioeconomic approach to growth can lead to better economic policies, measures of performance, and predictions of progress. To take just one example, policymakers would be quicker to realize that food aid to warmer regions can destroy local farming economies that supply adequate caloric needs at a lower steady state.

Makes sense to me.......2004-09-03
Saw this title on a physics wish list and picked it up. The read is certainly not too technical, though drifts a bit in the math. Hardly racist as a reviewer says, but instead makes perfect sense. Irrepsective of race or geography, economics are affected by external factors which must obey the laws of physics. Data that do not consider this may mislabel economies as underdeveloped. I read Guns, Germs and Steel but that book misses the fundamentals driving humans that Parker seems to have caught.
Thinly disguised racism.......2003-11-29
This book is a kind of technical theory of why Northern countries control all the wealth. I would recommend the book "Guns, Germs and Steel" if you want to really examine the subject of civilization.

Book Description
Biotechnology offers one of the most economical and environmentally benign methods of air pollution control for industrial and municipal airstreams. Volatile organic and inorganic odorous compounds from various industries are emitted in large quantities and create hazards to the ecosystem and health effects to humans. Thus, the demand for odor and air pollution control systems that provide nuisance-free, breathable air is constantly growing.
An international board of authors from universities, research institutes, and industries describe various biotechnological methods ranging from laboratory, to pilot evaluation and to full-scale process implementation. Topics include bioprocesses for the treatment of odors and air pollutants in wastewater treatment plants, rendering plants, chemical production facilities, and food and flavor manufacturing facilities. In addition to the basic microbiological and engineering aspects, the design, modeling and control of bioreactors are also presented.

Book Description
Hardbound. The increasing concern for odour abatement, and more generally for reduction of air pollution, has caused a rapid growth in the development of air pollution control techniques, several of which are based on biological degradation of the polluting compounds.
This book presents a state-of-the-art overview of recent developments in biological techniques for air pollution control. It describes in detail processes for the prevention of odour nuisances and reduction of odour emissions. It also deals with process design and construction of equipment as well as with odour policy measurements at an international level.

Book Description
The importance attached to rapidly developing our biodefensive capabilities has recently resulted in a significantly increased funding for biodefense research. Accordingly, researchers will respond with an effort equal to the challenge, producing an impressive body of findings. To ensure that this effort continues in the most efficient manner, Biodefense: Research Methodology and Animal Models presents a thorough historical and current review of biodefense research, encouraging researchers to leverage relevant results, rather than duplicate them. By building on the work of others, scientists will be able to proceed in a way that makes the best use of available resources, while avoiding unnecessary duplication of animal research. Including contributions from recognized leaders in the field who have developed and refined the animal models presented, this book examines those bacterial, viral, and toxic agents considered to pose the greatest threats to public safety. Each section on a specific agent provides pertinent background information, followed by a description of those animal models employed in research and testing and a discussion of how the findings translate to human impact.

Jimmy Ballard book review.......2007-01-22
I'm an older golfer (70+) and I found this the best golf swing instruction book I've ever read. The illustrations were of players I remember idolizing when I was a younger player, the concepts logically defined & metaphores easy to remember when practising, the drills constructive & productive. His use of concepts like "connections" and "swinging from the ground up" have stayed with me throughout the season. In some instances he told me things about the act of swinging the club that had never occurred to me before. In short he must have been a great teacher as my golf instructor told me when he recommended it.
The Bible.......2006-07-16
From taking up golf at age 10 until I was 18 I was a hacker - and I so desperately wanted to be good that practiced every day on the range. I took lessons from many local Club pros but never improved. My swing felt ungainly and awkward and I found golf so frustrating and depressing. Then by accident I bought Jimmy's first video - 'The Jimmy Ballard Golf Connection'. Soon after I bought this book. I was completely amazed. He was telling me exactly the OPPOSITE of what I had always been taught by all these different pros, as well as many well meaning amateurs at my club. It was almost an evangelical experience. I felt as if a huge cloud had been lifted. I read and re-read his book and immediately began to practice, disgard all the classical 'sacred' swing rules I had ever learnt that had prevented me from making any natural, athletic moves and ignore all the teaching I had ever had. What a transformation. Within 12 months my handicap had reduced from 18 to 6 and then shortly after to 3. I was picked for my University first team for 3 straight years and won the vast majority of my matches. I hit the ball so consitently and straight whilst my opponents were in the trees/rough/undergrowth. Best of all, my golf swing FELT so perfect, natural, effortless, balanced and perectly repetitive. Everyone commented about it enviously. I had so many comments that my swing looked exactly like Curtis Strange. (He should have known better than to listen to any other teacher and fiddle with a perfect swing). Now several years later, my busy career has meant that I only played golf once last year. But I stood on the first tee having not hit a ball for many months and after I few practice swings, my swing felt perfect, natural and easy. Perfect contact and the ball went straight down the middle as if I had never been off the golf course. That is the proof that Jimmy Ballard is right and everyone else is wrong. Before if I didn't hit a ball for 2 days I just couldn't make contact.
What more can I say? This man has given me a perfect golf swing for a lifetime. He is God when it comes to golf. He may not be anywhere near as good at promoting himself and using the media as David Leadbeader (who stole a few of Jimmy's ideas when he came to prominence - and then added some flawed ideas of his own) but listen to no one else and read nothing else unless it's by Jimmy Ballard. This book is the Bible.
Possibly the best ever.......2002-11-06
In my humble opinion based on reading perhaps 1,000 books on golf over the past 40+ years, this may be the single best golf instructional book ever written. It's short, it's clear, it's well-illustrated, and it's an approach to instruction that WORKS. As I recall, Ballard was selected as the "teacher of the decade" for the 1980's by Golf Magazine, and with good reason. His fundamental principle of "connection" is, as he says, not merely the key to golf but to any number of sports. He has identified the fundamental principle that distinguishes the great ball-strikers from the hacks and also-rans. Regardless of what they may SAY they do, or FEEL they do, Ballard has identified what the great ball-strikers really DO. I recently took some lessons at the Kapalua Golf Academy and came home thinking "That sounds just like what Jimmy Ballard was saying 20 years ago." I picked up a copy of this book and confirmed that it indeed was what Ballard was saying 20 years ago. You may need some professional guidance to confirm that you are grasping what Ballard is saying, but I'm convinced that what he is saying is pretty much the one overriding key to the golf swing. I'm astounded that this book is out of print because it deserves to live alongside of Hogan's Five Lessons and a handful of other indisputable classics.
Try this drill.......2002-02-27
If you want to test Ballard's theories, try the drill on
page 60: "Another way to get a feel for [connection] is to
hit some medium or short irons with a handkerchief under
your left shoulder. If you drop the handkerchief, you've
unplugged, or disconnected, allowing the arms to work
independently of the body." You may have seen Vijay Singh
hit practice shots with a headcover under his left arm
and wonder what he was doing. That's what he's doing.
I've played 40 years, including college golf, and have a
single digit handicap. I am 5'8", small framed, under 150
lbs. Without the big muscle approach, I'm toast. His
common misconceptions alone will help you.
This title should be put back in production. It would
eliminate a lot of human suffering.
A Real Shame...........2001-11-30
It's a real shame that this book is out of print. This is the best book I've read on the golf swing. Applying concepts learned in just the first few chapters, I saw immediate improvement.
Amazon.com
Smith, the guru behind two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, offers a simple suggestion to get your swing on course: find your own. If it seems obvious, the sad truth is that it's obvious to all subsets of the human species other than golfers; golfers tend to want to ape the mechanics of whoever's on top of the leader board for the week. Smith preaches that you begin with an honest assessment of your own skills and ability. From there, his instructional tees up theory, drills, and exercises geared to getting you into what he calls the "ideal impact position"--the connection of club face to golf ball--so that regardless of whether you resemble the liquid Fred Couples or the spastic club hacker, you can at least strike the ball with confidence. Smith fills Swing with useful photos and understandable mechanics, and ends with an agreeable chapter on lessons he's learned through the years from others, including such pros as Janzen, Jack Nicklaus, David Duval, and Phil Mickelson; good teachers should always tip a tam to their own sources of inspiration. --Jeff Silverman

Customer Reviews:
Not that complicated.......2001-07-21
If you want complicated, try Gary Wiren or Homer Kelly. Smith focuses first on impact (a la Johnny Miller), the backswing, downswing and then the setup. The still photos were good - I would have liked to seen more. There's also a useful faults and fixes section. Smith isn't a method teacher and is mostly clear in his descriptions of the swing. I had to reread a couple of parts to understand what he was trying to say. Although alot of what he writes is covered in other texts, he does make alot of enlightening points I've never read about before. I'd recommend this book for someone who's already had a lesson or two or read Golf for Dummies and knocked the ball around a little. Ultimately, a lesson from a good teacher is always preferred.
very insightful instruction.......1999-07-07
The book has done a good job of dispelling certain myths about the golf swing. I read every golf book that comes along and think that this book is similiar to the book GOLF IS A WOMAN'S GAME. Both books address myths about the golf swing. A suggestion.. if you liked this book try GOLF IS A WOMAN'S GAME both books are a one two punch
FOR THE PERSON WHO LIKES TO HIT GOLF BALLS.......1999-02-02
For the past five or six years I have read the leading golf magazines and numerous books about golf. This is the best instructional material I have read. The concept of the full swing was easy for me to understand and I appreciated the way Rick Smith dispelled many of the myths we've associated with the golf swing.
This book is for the person, like me, who likes to hit golf balls. I know I have improved my swing and lifted my confidence level as a result of reading this book.
I'm reading it now for the third time.
Thank's Rick
Far to complicated for (any) the average golfer.......1999-01-22
I consider myself a student of the game and have read many thoughts on how to play your best golf. This book (while I am sure fundamentally sound) would take a physics background and a full time golf coach to implement the many ideas presented in this book. I would avoid this book unless you enjoy a good migraine headache.

Customer Reviews:
shows the best golf swings in the world, frame by frame.......2006-08-20
If you are a visual learner, and are looking to improve your full golf swing, then I believe this book is for you. The book contains a frame by frame pictorial (in 3 different views) of some of the best golfers in the world. I think the best way to make this book work for you is to find the professional with the swing that is most similar to yours, and compare your positions to theirs. This book was eye opening for me, and helped my game (mirroring Steve Elkington's pre-impact position probably cut me down from a 12 handicap to an 8).
Views of a good number of players.......2005-09-16
This is not a book of instruction: it is a book of swings, and analysis.
What makes this book so valuable is that, perhaps for the first time, people can look at many of the greatest players of all time and see how their swings differ (or are similar to) each other.
Where this book offers no great instruction, it gives the average person a look into the realm of swing analysis, that cryptic world beyond the comprehention of so many of us. It may also serve as a good teaching resource for golf instructors.
If any improvements are to be made, before and after shots of people who have undergone major swing changes, and a larger number of classic golfers (Demeret and Sarazen in particular) would be nice.

Customer Reviews:
If You're Serious About Your Genealogy..........2006-02-11
This book was a splurge for me, but one that I can definitely say was well worth it! I thought I knew quite a bit about genealogy research, but this book has taught me so much more. Each chapter is written by a professional genealogist who specializes in the topic. While some chapters are geared towards genealogists starting their own research business, most are helpful to all genealogists. Lots of excellent examples of proper research methods and techniques.
Where's the book?.......2004-04-03
I ordered this book as a gift for a relative 6 weeks ago. After 2 delays the estimated ship date was still 4 weeks away. I contacted the pubilsher direct and they shipped the book the next day. Just an FYI.
A must have for Professional Genealogists and Hobbiests Alik.......2003-12-19
You don't have to be a professional to benefit immensely from Professional Genealogy. I purchased this book when I first began offering my services as a professional researcher, and wished I had acquired it sooner.
The book is filled with useful information for professional and hobbyist alike, such as tips on building a library of "essential texts" (including an extensive list of resources for ethnic research), samples of research reports and guidelines for proper reporting, steps for determining the validity of a document, as well as the validity of published research...the list goes on.
Each chapter has been created by a different expert in the field of genealogy, it is well cited, and gives a list of further recommended reading.
I used this text everyday as I was developing my company, and it walked me through the complicated process of writing business plans, creating and executing contracts, organizing, filing, and marketing. This is the perfect gift for the aspiring professional, or anyone who is serious about genealogical research.
Of immense practical value in the field.......2002-01-13
Ably edited by Elizabeth Mills, Professional Genealogy: A Manual For Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers, And Librarians is a core title for any private or professional genealogical reference book collection. Family historians wanting to do independent study, genealogy students needed to familiarize themselves with research standards and resources, professionals in search of benchmarks against which to measure their skills and expertise, will find Professional Genealogy to be an expansive (680 pages) encyclopedia text and indexed reference of immense practical value in the field of genealogical research and recording.
Professional Genealogy.......2001-08-01
This comprehensive manual for professional genealogists is a "must have" for any serious genealogical researcher. Each chapter, which contains sections written by 23 professional genealogists, covers a different aspect of using professional skills to produce quality work. The topics covered include every aspect of professional genealogy, from legalities and ethics, to education, research, compiling research reports, and publishing. Although the manual is intended for professional genealogists, I would strongly recommend it to every hobbyist. There are chapters which are obviously more useful to the professional, such as, "Career Management", but most of the topics simply pertain to producing quality work, and would benefit the serious hobbyist. With 654 pages, it covers the same amount of material as several "lighter" books. It would be hard to imagine a question that is not covered by this manual, which is destined to become the standard in this field.
Book Description
What do the Chinese write on their paintings? Why do they write on them? In this newly revised volume--now illustrated in color--Michael Sullivan provides a lucid and engaging analysis of the intimate relationships among painting, poetry, and calligraphy in Chinese culture. The fundamental unity of writing and painting is shown to be an ancient, though still valid, concept in China. Twenty-six luminous reproductions of celebrated works of art illustrate key aspects of this superb union of literature and the visual arts.
Customer Reviews:
Three Cheers for "The Three Perfections".......2006-11-16
"The Three Perfections" is a thin little book and takes about an hour to read, but that's an hour very well-spent. Sullivan does a wonderful job of explaining to the western reader in an engagingly erudite manner why Chinese paintings, well, have writing on them. In the process he touches upon the history of this phenomenon and on the different types of inscriptions and their varying significance as well as describing the fully-developed Chinese art theories on the interdependence of painting, poetry, and calligraphy. All along he keeps the discussion concrete with multiple examples, usually with an accompanying illustration--and these alone are well worth the price of the book. By the end of it, someone who has loved East Asian art for a long time such as myself will still come away with a new appreciation of the subject, but Sullivan's friendly, unpretentious, and lucidly clear delivery is ideal for the curious beginner as well. In short, this fine little volume is perfectly enjoyable, informative, and aesthetically pleasing.
A Handsome Book!.......2006-11-11
Michael Sullivan's "The Three Perfections: Chinese Painting, Poetry, and Calligraphy" (Rev. Ed., 1999) is, in short, a beautiful book. It is not a comprehensive examination of the history of Chinese painting; rather, Sullivan starts with what seems a fairly trivial question (i.e., "What, and why, do the Chinese write on their paintings?") and uses that question as a stepping stone into an essay that is both lucid and thoughtful. The color plates, as printed in this edition published by George Braziller, are lovingly presented on high-quality paper. Particularly worth seeing are Ma Yuan's "On a Mountain Path in Spring" and Shen Zhou's "The Poet on a Cliff Top". (I would like to include the plate of my favorite Chinese painting, Fan Kuan's "Traveling Amid Mountains and Streams", in this listing, but such a large painting -- it is more than two meters high -- deserves a page larger than it would admittedly be practical to print.) Overall, though, an excellent volume, and one that will always have a place on my bookshelf.
