Rationalitiy and background in international relations.......2005-12-23

For someone who was previously unfamiliar with Joseph Nye's work, this collection of essays was fascinating and eye-opening. He includes several of his essays written over the past four decades up to 2003, effectively giving the reader a brief history of the theories relating to the modern rise of globalism and transnational enterprise, just up until before the start of the Iraq war. Any mention of the war is conspicuously absent, which is somewhat disappointing and leaves the reader thirsting to learn his views on the current situations facing America.

The author makes it clear he is patriotic and devoted to the idea of American supremacy. It is clear the book is written from an American point of view. He only briefly touches on the problems of other countries and instead focuses on how "we" must view the system of the world in order to preserve it. He argues that although preserving the system benefits Americans the most, it is also necessary to avoid collapse and chaos. However, he does argue strongly for the need for multi-lateral cooperation in the use of force. It is interesting that many of his statements about the perils of a unilateral military action, such as high cost out of proportion to gain, inability to withdraw and losing credibility with world opinion, are now being witnessed in the military action in Iraq. I found his discussion particularly relevant about the inadequacies of disregarding personal morality in the relations of state (p. 116-117), even though it was written in 1985 the context of the cold war.

The author makes a careful and balanced examination of the strengths and weaknesses of the theories he studies. He tries to avoid making direct policy statements and instead presents a range of considerations that influence decisions about relations across borders and seas. He illuminates the reader with insight on other theorists strengths and limitations, such as his discussion of the classic dialectic between Neorealsim and Neoliberalism p. 31-32. Each approach emphasizes its idea of the primary concern for the world system and Nye argues that to achieve a true understanding of the world system, one must understand the effects of both.

Overall, the book is challenging to read because of its primarily academic nature, however, worth the effort to understand his analysis and arguments, especially for one who is interested in gaining a balanced perspective to the interplay between governmental and non-governmental relations in our increasingly interdependent world society.

Concise, pragmatic and filled with advice.......2001-06-29

This is one of the most straightforward, content rich books on process design and reengineering in my library. It's not the biggest in terms of page count, but certainly among the best in pragmatic approach and techniques. It's also a compact catalog of process frameworks to which I refer when I need a quick approach that I can tailor and apply to a specific problem.

Mr. Roberts starts this book running. By page 7 h's stepping you through an "as-is" and "to-be" scenario of a process in need of redesign. He shares his process reengineering philosophy in chapter 2, which is highlighted by twelve highly effective tenets that will serve you well as either a process designer or reengineer. Chapter 3 covers possibilities and pitfalls and addresses the key elements of any well designed process, including customer focus, cycle time improvements, process efficiencies and other attributes. The pitfalls cited are sage advice that make this book all the more valuable. The process reengineering framework given in chapter 4 is a complete roadmap to reengineering and can also be recast into a framework for process design and implementation. This is one of the most valuable aspects of the book.

The chapter that most greatly influenced my thinking is on opportunity assessment. This area, in my opinion, is where projects get initiated before they are completely thought through. The focus on traceability to customer requirements, quantitative value analysis and business case approach should be required reading for anyone who has the authority to initiate reengineering projects. The information and approach will go a long way towards ensuring that you wisely commit resources to the right things, and will also circumvent premature failures (not to mention tarnished or ruined careers or reputations).

Chapters 6 and 7 address planning the reengineering project and identifying and assigning the team. These are followed by four chapters devoted to the sequence of tasks and milestones for the project: analysis, design, risk and impact assessment, and planning and implementing the transition. The last is a critical point that, if not done properly, will kill an otherwise successful project. Each of the chapters, however, provide clear and straightforward direction on how to accomplish necessary tasks and successfully meet milestones.

After a process has been implemented the job of tracking and measuring project performance begins. This is the subject of chapter 12, and is a necessary part of a thoroughly planned and executed reengineering project. After all, the goal is to supplant a legacy process that is no longer efficient and/or effective, not create a brand new process with the same limitations.

Overall this is a valuable book that is easy to read and filled with excellent advice. If you are faced with either designing a new process or reengineering an existing one this book will point you in the right direction. It will also step you through what you need to do, while pointing out the pitfalls along the way and advising on how to avoid or deal with them.

THE DEFENSE THAT IS SWEEPING THE NATION!.......2007-03-17

"The 3-3-5 Defense" is by far the best book that Leo Hand has written. It covers player assignments, techniques, drills, coaching terminology, and lots of diagrams, It is easy to read and well written.

His football terminology maybe a little too much for a new coach, however, all you have to do is look at the diagrams and you will see what he is talking about. A must buy book for any football coach that wants to run the 3-3-5 Defense.

I needed help with writing a strong letter character. This book provides ample amount of example to work with. It was easy to take from one letter sample and add to another to produce a strong letter for any occasion.

Great resource for all.......2005-02-06

I bought a copy of this book to keep in my office for those in my school who needed it. I have received rave reviews from all of my teachers, counselors, etc. What some educators don't understand is that a poorly written letter or rec. can actually be harmful to a students chance of being accepted into college. Although the letter is written by another individual it is a direct reflection on the student who you are writing the letter for. Right or wrong, any mistakes in a letter or rec. reflect on the student and not the writer. Therefore, this book or any similar ones out there are a great addition to any office or gift to new teachers/counselors. It's a great resource.

I am totally delighted with the information contained in this book. A few years ago, I bought one for myself when I was a high school counselor. Recently, I was appointed principal for a large comprehensive public high school in Southern California. I bought all my counselors a copy of the book. It is very easy to follow and comprehend. It is a great resource for counselors and educators.
I highly recommend it to guidance and career counselors, and educators at the middle and high school level.

Indispensible Helper for High School Counselors !.......2001-12-06

Susan Whalley's book is the most used and sought after volume in my very busy high school guidance counseling office. "Who has the letter book?", is a frequent question in my office during college application season. Each year, a typical counselor at my school writes about 30 - 40 letters recommending students to college. This is a daunting task, considering the fact that we don't know all of our students personally, (alas, if we only could). After a brief meeting when we ask students a few key questions to help us along, it is letter writing time! And the words do not always come. Susan Whalley's book provides counselors and teachers with descriptive words and phrases, thoughts on letter writing, and helpful insights into the nature of writing recommendations. The sample letters are grouped to roughly categorize the type of student, for example the "pluggers", "academic achievers", and the "hardest ones to write". These sample letters serve to jog our minds and get us going. I recommend this book for every high school guidance office and teacher's bookshelf. It is a valuable and helpful tool.

I was somewhat disappointed because the title of the book was misleading. As an employer looking for ideas to write a letter for an employee, this book was of no help. Also, I doubt the examples provided in this book would be helpful for a college student looking to get into graduate school, for example.

This book is excellent for HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS looking for examples they can tailor for HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. Outside of this small audience, I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone.
