Book Description

In Nebraska, as in many states across the nation, factory farms housing tens of thousands of hogs have altered the physical, cultural, and economic landscape, and have generated complex and deeply divisive conflicts among family farmers, environmentalists, agribusinesses, and elected officials. A reporter long familiar with the controversy, Carolyn Johnsen draws on a wealth of interviews, archival material, and her own extensive experience as a journalist to present a timely, informative, and balanced account of this complicated and troubling agricultural practice—and to put a human face on its causes and consequences.

Here everyone has a say: farmers and neighbors suffering from proximity to the factory hog farms; pork producers adopting the latest hog confinement technology in the face of fierce opposition; politicians attempting to interpret the “science” and shape public policy in a maelstrom. The result is the story of a struggle for the heart and soul of rural America.

5 out of 5 stars The author's work shines in "Raising a Stink".......2004-03-27

I recently finished reading this book, and I am very impressed with it. I consider it an outstanding work of journalism. Johnsen reports on many events over several years, and in every paragraph she is thorough, detailed and fair.
The book tells an always-interesting story of the spirited yet civil debates not only about factory farms, but about the future of farming, some of which I too witnessed and reported from 1997 to 2002 as a newspaper writer.
It is not real surprising to me, as a life-long Nebraskan, that Nebraska and its people are deeply involved in such a vital discussion, and although it is still unsettled, I am proud to see how it is faced. I think the outcome of this debate will influence the future of land, probably for another 100 years or so. Nebraska has a long tradition of small farms, small governments and individual rights. The slow, steady march of business is enlarging the size of farms at the same time many older farmers and baby boomers are retiring. Younger farmers seek work elsewhere.
For me, the profound question is -- should the future of farming be solely determined by economic efficiency; or, should farms be a place where many independent people live and work? This book is all about how people brought their beliefs on that issue to bear on reality. They not only considered the strong odors, potential enviromental harm and economic impacts of factory hog farms, they tried to apply the principles of fairness, justice and liberty.

Significantly enough, the events in this book occurred at the turn of the millennium.
As is always the case, the future depends on what people choose to do, or not do, about the challenges that face them each day, week, month and year. For anyone who is and wants to be involved in creating the future of agriculture, I especially recommend this book. It gives a strong foundation of accurate information about how rural residents, business as well as state and local governments behave when challenged with issues of immediate consequence and lasting importance.
Congratulations, Carolyn.

5 out of 5 stars Jim Reese -- Lincoln Journal Star.......2003-10-20

A friend of mine, and fellow colleague that teaches in the English department is always asking me what my infatuation with hogs is. He says, everywhere I look, there's a pig. A pig on your desk, a pig on the cover of your book, a picture of you and a pig walking down a dirt road. You own pigs or what? He asked me one day. Kind of, I answered. I own the one that's in my deep freeze. I bought it. I butchered it with some help and I now I'm eating it-trying to do my part to save and support the family farm. How's that for an answer?
Well, for some readers it might make perfect sense and to others it might not. The question addressed over and over again in Raising A Stink-the Struggles over Factory Hog Farms in Nebraska is farming. What is real farming and/or who is the real farmer? Carolyn Johnsen addresses these questions and investigates the controversies over these complicated corporate ventures and what is being done to save the heart and soul of rural America.
Carolyn Johnsen is no stranger to controversy. Johnsen is an award winning reporter and associate producer for news and public affairs at Nebraska Public Radio Network After reading about the Hog Hilton's and Initiative 300 I wanted to know where she stood on this issue.
"People often ask for my opinion about factory-like hog farms. It's not so simple as saying this method of raising livestock is good or bad. Some farmers profitably raise pigs in confinement without harming their neighbors' lives or the environment. Others profit at the expense of both the environment and their neighbors' good will. Policymakers struggle--with mixed results--to reconcile conflicting values and science related to the issue. I hope Raising A Stink informs the debate and helps readers to decide which side the accumulated evidence comes down on."
Raising A Stink makes the hair on the back of my neck stand. It scares me to think of what the Plains are turning into. It burns me, to think of what is happening to families struggling from harvest to harvest.

5 out of 5 stars Not just Nebraska!.......2003-10-02

Although the focus of this book is on Nebraska farming, the issues are much more universal. Johnsen's balanced analysis of factory production versus family farm production lets the reader make the value judgements. This book will also encourage a thoughtful reader to consider the sources of food production in related industries, including poultry and seafood. If you care where your food -- particularly your pork -- comes from, then you should read this book.

                    Book Description

The woolly spider monkey, or muriqui, is one of the most threatened primate species in the world. Because of deforestation in their natural habitat--the Atlantic coastal forests of southeastern Brazil--the muriquis are confined to less than 3 percent of their original range. As of 1987, there were only a dozen forest fragments known to support a total muriqui population of about 500. As of 1998, at least 20 forests are known to support at least 1,000 muriquis. This book traces the natural history of the muriqui from its scientific discovery in 1806 to its current, highly endangered status. Karen Strier provides a case study of this scientifically important primate species by balancing field research and ecological issues. Through her accessible presentation, readers gain a broad understanding of primate behavior and tropical conservation.

The book tells the story of Karen Strier's 20 year long research among the muriquis, the largest primate of the Americas, on a rain forest conservation unit in Caratinga, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Karen's findings have enabled her to write a very influential article criticizing the "myth of the typical primate". It is a solid work of primatology and yet very much readable. It contains scholarly work without pedantry. It documents an exemplary scientific carreer dedicated to research and the environment.

                      Book Description

Drawing visitors to the heart of Chicago's north side for 135 years, Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in America. This thorough and fascinating history of the zoo combines archival materials, photographs, and oral histories to chronicle the zoo's development and chart the unique role it has played not just in the growth of Chicago but in the establishment of zoos in cities across America.

Lincoln Park Zoo was established in 1868 when New York's Central Park Commissioners sent the Lincoln Park Commissioners the gift of two pairs of swans. The swans were such a popular attraction that the park commissioners began acquiring other animals and building quarters for them, adding a bear cage, a bison enclosure, a sea lion pool, an eagle exhibit, and an animal house, all before 1900.

Although the zoo was initially conceived as a primarily recreational attraction, its mission has evolved over time, with conservation, science, and education now forming central elements. Starting in 1884, when the zoo saw what was reportedly the first-ever birth of a North American bison in captivity, Lincoln Park Zoo has been part of the effort to study and protect endangered species from all over the world.

This comprehensive history of Lincoln Park Zoo also tells the wider story of the growth of the American zoo movement and the changes that have occurred in the past century, as zoos evolved from a leisure pursuit into a multimillion-dollar industry and an invaluable participant in global conservation efforts.

If you grew up in the Chicagoland area, you probably watched the Ray Rayner Show. It had cartoons and silly antics, and it had a sequence call, the Ark in the Park. After the Irish Rovers sang their Unicorn Song, Dr. Lester Fisher of the Lincoln Park Zoo would come out with an animal or two, and talk about them and their habitat. And all of us kids would agitate to go see Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, the Ark in the Park.

This wonderful book is a fascinating history of the Lincoln Park Zoo, from the park's creation to clear up a swampy old cemetery (where rains would regularly wash coffins to the surface!), through the origination of the zoo, it's changes with time, and on to the very present. Along the way, the reader is treated to many great tales of dedicated zoo personnel (including Director Marlin Perkins who became famous nationwide on Mutual of Omaha's Animal Kingdom), politicians both sympathetic and not, park visitors of all dispositions (after one elephant died, it was found to have 33 pounds of bottle caps, broken glass, rubber balls, etc. in her stomach!), and animals of equally varied dispositions.

This is a great book and a great resource for anyone familiar with the Lincoln Park Zoo. More than that, this is a great resource for anyone who wishes to know more about the development of America's zoos, and how the philosophy of zookeeping has evolved over the years. I highly recommend this book!

                        Book Description

The fighting arts of Indonesia, a mix of pentjak silat and Chinese kuntao, were never meant for sport: they are brutal, unrelenting and designed to take the enemy out and punish him every step of the way. This unprecedented book by a long-time student of Dutch-Indonesian Master Willem de Thouars shows you why.

Here we have a decent depiction of how the various arts of the Archipelago may be practiced. It is more of a tactics and principles book than a mere techniques catalog, so it will appeal to those who have been in the arts for some years, as well as those who are simply striving for deeper understanding of the basics.

4 out of 5 stars Another great book , but............2007-05-13

I really liked the book but was disappointed by the fact that the author left out lots of history and info on the "mystical" side of Pentjak. His reason though for doing this is that he is a Christian and doesn't believe in chi or the mystical stuff. I do understand and respect his decision in doing so. The book does show not really techniques but rather drills to understand body movement from which all techniques come form. Overall it's very recommended for simplicity in explaining the flow and feel of Pentjak Silat. Again no disrespect for the author or his choice of worship.

Bob Orlando did a great job on this book. The contents of the book is primarily a blend of Kun Tao -Silat. I trained in the Indonesian Martial Arts some, by way of Hanshi Bruce Juchnik, who like Bob Orlando, studied the Indonesian Martial Arts from Willem de Thouars. Bob has also trained in many other martial arts.

5 out of 5 stars Oh.. so that what it actually means..........2005-03-30

I only learn Pencak Silat for two months in high school, simply because it is part of the curriculum. Some sundanese style I don't even know the name.

Like many other Indonesians I know, I consider pencak silat as silly, ineffective, traditional, etc. ... in short, learn karate, jujitsu, tae kwon do, or any other martial arts... but not silat... (shame on us, but it is the popular perception)

Reading this book I looked back at the only two jurus I know, and realized that there are more in there than some silly dance...

Now I am a proud Indonesian.

However, I doubt that many Indonesian masters really understand the materials they are teaching... this is really a remarkable work of Indonesian art from western perspective.

A great thank you to Mr. Orlando...

This well-written, easy to read tome is a thinking martial artist's book. It is filled with sound principles and great explanations of why they work so effectively in actual combat. There's some techniques too, but that's not really the heart of this tome. Pentjak silat and kuntao are, at their core, functional fighting arts and Sifu Orlando is master of these brutal styles. He places rarely divulged applications in context, artfully explaining why and how they work. I wasn't too keen on his work 'Martial Arts in America' so I held off on buying this one for quite some time. Having finally gotten around to reading it I really wish I'd bought this one sooner. I am thoroughly impressed with this outstanding volume even at its rather steep price. Very highly recommended!

                        Book Description

Naskh is among the most popular of the six major Arabic scripts, used in more Qur-ans than all other scripts combined. The easy-to-follow, self-study workbook Arabic Calligraphy makes it possible for you to learn and enjoy the beauty of this noble art. The first stroke-by-stroke guide for learning Arabic calligraphy, it progresses from the initial, medial, and final forms of Arabic letters to joined letters and on to complete words. Guidelines also help you determine which pens, ink, and writing angle to use for best results.

This introductory workbook is for those who have no previous knowledge of Arabic and want to try writing in Arabic writing for the first time. Writing is in this case a misnomer because as the title suggests the emphasis is on calligraphy. The workbook, which is about the size of a standard magazine, starts with how to make a reed pen for calligraphy. The next part concentrates on the mufradaat (single letters), followed by murakkabaat (joined letters) and kalimaat (words). The book finishes with a gallery of beautiful examples of naskh calligraphy taken from throughout history. The presentation within each section is jumbled and unsystematic but not so much so that the text isn't worthwhile. The book is especially good at depicting the correct stroke order and the letters are large sized which a great help when just starting out. If you are a novice you will probably be happy with this book but will have preferred a more methodical, step-by-step presentation of the material.

For those without who want to learn to read as well write in Arabic The Arabic Alphabet by Awde and Samano is about as good of an introduction as one can find, however it doesn't have the beautiful examples of scripts and the large-size lettering that Arabic Calligraphy has (both books are cheap so go ahead and get the two of them.) If Arabic Calligraphy stimulates your appetite for more check out the richly illustrated Arabic Script: Styles, Variants, and Calligraphic Adaptations by Gabriel Mandel Khan. It depicts many of the styles besides naskh, traces their historical development, and discusses the latent symbolism that is present in many of these beautiful forms.

Though I've only read through this book, not yet having 'road-tested' it, I am thoroughly delighted in finding this slim volume and hope that further series (amateur, advanced, specialised) are forthcoming.

For starters, I think it should be stated that this book is not for someone who wants to gain an understanding of the Arabic alphabet, i.e. pronunciation. This is a book for someone who knows what the letters sound like and has a pretty good understanding of which letter is which. I don't see this as a fault at all and I hope no one else does. At some point, you have to stop second guessing your audience. That said, this book carefully details, just as Roman alphabet calligraphy books, the finer points of how to scribe each and every letter of the Arabic alphabet. All in all, this book is excellent for someone wanting more than the average 'how to write arabic' primer. It gives proper form as a guideline, while expressing that of course ideals cannot be exact on every writing. It gives hints on how to perfect the line of each letter and the best part: it carefully goes over possible forms and joinings of seperate letters with each other. There is a brief display of ligatures, which the author states is a whole new subject outside the scope of the book. I can only hope that is his way of hinting at a sequel!
