Colloquial Hungarian is a user-friendly guide to the basic grammar of contemporary Hungarian. I have really enjoyed using this text and the accompanying CDs. It does move very quickly, but it makes Hungarian much easier to learn than I had anticipated! I am using this book in conjunction with instruction by a tutor; I'm not sure how well a beginner would do without some additional assistance.

I was fortunate to have Erika Solyom as my professor. I believe Colloquial Hungarian is the best book on the market to teach the difficult language of Hungarian: it is easy to follow, uses relevant and sensible dialogs and life situations, and uses cultural elements in an accessible plot. The book is very dense, covering most grammatical rules found in the Hungarian language; however, this allows the book to accomplish both depth and breadth. The reader is able to set his or her own pace and learn what they find relevant. Realistically, I would say, to have a very comprehensible/survival understanding, one should complete chapters one through five in about one semester (fifteen weeks). Though dense, the book is geared for self-paced education with constant review and digestion. Hungarian is not a language to be learned in a matter of weeks (as the Hungarians will proudly point out). However, Colloquial Hungarian gives a great overview and insight into the fascinating language.

it was supposed to be "colloquial" but was very complicated for our eight college students to use. They attempted pre-study and also did some work during our orientation, but even the Hungarian-speaking leader found it extremely difficult to grasp. we are looking for something better now.

Brings an impossible language within reach........2005-10-21

I studied from Erika Solyom's book while studying in Budapest, Hungary. For me, learning the Hungarian language seemed to be a very intimidating task, but Colloquial Hungarian made the process much easier, even fun. The characters, dialogues, cultural items and poetry included in the book expose the reader to Hungarian culture which helped me have a deeper understanding of the Hungarian lanuage. I strongly recommend this book.

Misleading Title.......2002-07-24

Those looking for COLLOQUIAL Uzbek samples will be disappointed (like I was), since the material here is simply standard literary Uzbek recorded on tape in phrasebook format. No attempt is made to present features of spoken Uzbek, such as using one ending for both genitive and accusative, and pronouncing this as +ni, +di, or +ti depending on the final consonant. Even the second person plural pronoun "sizlar" (you all) is left out. The material also shows some Turkish influence, such as the use of a verb for "to want" ("baliq istaysizmi?" "shirinlik xohlaysizmi?" are not spoken Uzbek). As usual with such material, the native speaker informant was content to translate the English phrases literally, with no concern for colloquial phraseology or usage. While a tourist traveling to Uzbekistan will find the material useful, I would not recommend it for someone wanting to learn spoken Uzbek.

Colloquial Hungarian by Jerry Payne.......2002-05-21

I think this book is great. However, the complexity of Hungarian requires a LOT of study, and hence, I recommend you get the cassette with it, and play it over and over and over and over again until the pronunciation exercises and first two dialogues make you sick. Once you have done this, the material in the book is much clearer, and like the other reviewer said, allows you to learn and get into Hungarian very quickly. Stuff I learnt in chapters 1 and 2 of this book I use regularly in Hungary and it seems to work! Be prepared for two months of vowel sound learning though - not a fault of the book, but the fact that Hungarian is very hard to pronounce, learn and understand - but nothing ventured...I do it for fun and I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to start - the dialogues are also funny, though I don't think anyone says "elvtars" in Hungary anymore - making this slightly outdated, but very enjoyable!!

Routledge's COLLOQUIAL HUNGARIAN offers just what its title suggests, a presentation of everyday spoken Hungarian. Any attempt to teach oneself such a complex language as Hungarian is going to require several textbooks, as a variety of approaches to aspects of the language help avoid confusion. COLLOQUIAL HUNGARIAN certainly deserves a place among one's materials. Whether or not it will be your primary textbook depends on your experience with foreign languages.

COLLOQUIAL HUNGARIAN moves along very quickly, a single one of its lessons offers enough information for three units in other textbooks. It's just the sort of book that the linguistics geek, with a few other languages under his belt, might find ideal. Grammatical concepts are presented in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner. Too bad this rigorous method was lost in Routledge's subsequent edition of the course (written that time by Carol Rounds).

If, however, you are just a normal guy compelled by some twist of fate to learn Hungarian, I recommend TEACH YOURSELF HUNGARIAN.

A good introductory book to get you started........2000-06-15

The book starts with pronunciation exercises, and then consists of a series of lessons, each of which simulates a common scenario setting (restaurants, gas station, etc). It presents new vocabulary and a few grammatical rules along the way. It makes for easy reading, and along with the tape can get you started easily into the language. However, if you want something more than "survival hungarian", you will need to go on to an intermediate book. The learnings from this book will not allow you to have a full conversation, but only to interact as a tourist in Hungary.

I am travelling to Egypt and wanted to learn some Arabic. I bought this product because "colloquial" sounded good. But I find it completely useless. The words on the tape are read much too quickly, and I find myself flipping frantically through the book trying to find the lessons that are being read. It focuses on very advanced grammar and a lot of weird idioms. There is virtually nothing useful to me on it.

Simple and easy.......2002-07-12

I have read reviews of people saying that they only bought the book or a tape. Now, I bought both at the same time and have been using them together. I have found the methods used very helpful, and the only drawback to the set is that a large part of the vocabulary is not on tape, so after you get used to the sounds that letters make you will have to guess what the words not said on tape sound like, although because the transliterations are fairly easy, it is not a difficult task. Overall, a great way to learn the language.

I was completely new to the arabic language when i bought this book. It is divided into sixteen lessons, with pronounciation exercises, grammar and reading practise. I think it is a good starter book, but be sure to get the accompanying tape. One drawback for me was that only a small amount of the words are repeated on the tape.

A Good Tool -- Book AND Cassette.......2001-06-14

I've used this series in Egyptian and other dialects to brush up before visiting various places. It is excellent to get conversational/survival skills up to speed in a short time. It is also good to get an ear for certain dialects and see their quirks.

I already had experience with Arabic before using this. Regardless, I would warn that it is ESSENTIAL that you acquire BOTH the book and the cassette. I can't see either as useful separately. The marketing for this, especially on the web, is fairly vague since they are available as a set and as casette and book separately.

There is no reason why this wouldn't be a good gateway for a person to learn aural arabic skills. The book is done entirely in transliterated latin text -- no Arabic script. And it works fairly well, especially if all you want to do is get around in Egyptian.

I recommend this set. If you have a limited budget, this set and a Lonely Plant or Rough Guide Egyptian phase book would get you pretty far. ...

Don't be deceived.......2000-03-17

A previous reviewer gave this audiocassette 5 stars. He/she must not have needed it in the first place. There is NO ENGLISH on this tape, so there is NO WAY to learn Arabic from the tape alone! Too bad the info on the web site doesn't mention this!

A bit of a disappointment.......1999-02-01

This book claims to contain 15 complete alphabets. The problem is that most contain only capital letters, there is only one lower case alphabet that contains all 26 letters, and it doesn't match any of the uppercase alphabets. Many of the alphabets are incomplete, skipping over several commonly used letters. There is only one set that contains matching numbers. There are a few pages of letters paired as initials, which is fine if you're initials happen to be BD or XL, or whatever letters they decided to throw together. I really only found the last five pages to be of any use, they contain various intricate ornaments in art deco style, and are beautifully rendered. All of the designs in this book are black and white.
