5 out of 5 stars authoritative and current treatment of count data.......2001-04-03

This is a very thorough and authoritative treatment of regression methods for analyzing count data. It is very current and covers many topics not commonly found in books on point processes. Economic applications are emphasized but the broader applicability of the methods is eluded to.

The authors intent is for this book to be read by researchers, graduate students and practitioners in the many fields that make use of count data. Chapter 1 introduces count data, the Poisson distribution and the Poisson process and also shows how the Poisson process can be derived based on the assumption of independent and identically distributed exponential waiting times. It concludes with specification of regression models for counts and a number of practical examples where modeling count data would naturally arise. The importance of the integers is emphasized with the quote from Kronecker at the beginning of the chapter, "God made the integers, all the rest is the work of man."

Chapter 2 provides an extensive treatment of model specification and estimation methods. The authors cover many approaches and provide excellent references to the literature. Generalized linear models provide one common approach in the statistics literature and these methods are well described in this chapter.

Poisson regression is the main topic of Chapter 3 but the chapter goes on to discuss negative binomial models that handle overdispersion. An example of data on doctor's visits is used to illustrate the techniques. Statistical tests for overdispersion are also presented. A variety of other modeling techniques are also provided.

More general models including mixture models are considered in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 looks at ways of evaluating potential models. Chapter 6 provides some real economic data from health services to illustrate the methods of the earlier chapters.

Chapter 7 covers time series analysis for integer data. The authors provide information and literature that is not standard in a text on time series analysis but is applicable to count data.

Subsequent chapters deal with more complexity including multivariate data, longitudinal data analysis and measurement error models. Important recent developments in bootstrap methods and Bayesian statistics are covered in the context of problems for which these methods have demonstrated their value.

This is a great reference book for statisticians and econometricians interested in problems involving counting processes. It could also be used for a graduate school text on point process regression.

Well most prople are used in telling stories about the unapliability of economics in real life. That math and logic can not apply to most economic books! Most of the people say that economics are only theory.I will tell you that this book is one of a kind, reading it you will be able to have a better understanding of Econometrics. If you have enough money to pay the rent and some left buy this book ! its better than food!

Book Description

The book provides graduate students and researchers with an up-to-date survey of statistical and econometric techniques for the analysis of count data, with a focus on conditional distribution models. Proper count data probability models allow for rich inferences, both with respect to the stochastic count process that generated the data, and with respect to predicting the distribution of outcomes. The book starts with a presentation of the benchmark Poisson regression model. Alternative models address unobserved heterogeneity, state dependence, selectivity, endogeneity, underreporting, and clustered sampling. Testing and estimation is discussed from frequentist and Bayesian perspectives. Finally, applications are reviewed in fields such as economics, marketing, sociology, demography, and health sciences. The fourth edition contains several new sections, for example on nonnested hurdle models, quantile regression and on software. Many other sections have been entirely rewritten and extended.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable Guidance to Count Data Analysis.......2000-04-03

Since publication in 1984 of two pathbreaking articles by HHG and GMT, many new econometric models and methods for count data have been developed and applied variously in cross-section, time series, and panel data situations. But there has been very few econometrics books guiding those models and methods. That's why this book is valuable. It brings together a diverse body of literature that until now were available largely in pieces. The emphasis of the book is on methods for cross-section data. It should have been more desirable to give same weight on explaining the modeling of panel count data which in recent years econometrics literature has more devoted to. This book may be very useful for applied researchers because it presents the main ideas underlying a variety of methods to overcome the problems of the restrictive Poisson specification and proper interpretation of underlying stochastic process.

      Book Description

Despite all the talk of change management, we somehow failed to recognize that we can't, in any meaningful sense, manage change. We can only manage our actions-hence action management.

Action Management presents global experience from PricewaterhouseCoopers to help businesses devise and implement practical action strategies to cope with change and make their corporate transformations successful. Books that promise to help businesses manage change are making promises they can't keep. No one can manage or control business change. The key, instead, is to cope with change and seize the opportunity for success by managing business action.

Authors Redwood, Goldwasser, and Street study successful action projects at industries ranging from high technology and financial services to petroleum and health care using an exclusive, in-depth survey conducted by MORI on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers covering 500 multinational businesses in 14 countries on four continents. Included here are the findings of the Global Action Survey for Nynex, Braun, British Airways Engineering, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, LSG/SkyChefs, and many more.

Action Management identifies the top 10 challenges to action that companies face such as planning, allocating, leading, and mobilizing for corporate action. Each chapter meets these 10 challenges by offering a host of "Tips" to heed and "Learn by example" sections that demonstrate how companies like Shell Information Systems, Neiman Marcus Group, and Barclaycard all utilize their action paths to get results. The authors leave virtually no questions unanswered and wrap up each chapter with a "Questions and Answers" section.

Action Management identifies four action paths: the sprint, the high jump, the decathlon, and the marathon. From short and fast to long and far reaching, each path combines action complexity and duration to meet and cope with change at all levels. The authors take managers through the action process from start to finish and help them determine how the four action paths will help them achieve their immediate and long-term goals. The practical advice and battle-tested strategies found in this valuable book addresses the problems of managers in the real world where standing still means falling behind, and where actions such as acquisitions, expansions, and downsizings can ruin a company if the action itself is not managed properly.

The best tools and thinking from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the leading global consultants to companies managing major change Profiles the action plans of Siemens, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Neiman Marcus, and many more.

4 out of 5 stars Book clearly shows what successful organizations have done........1999-05-04

This thought-provoking book is among the best I've read on transformation management. The authors characterize change actions (both personal and organizational) as being comparable to four Olympic events: the sprint (fast and brief), the high jump (also brief but complex as well), the marathon (long but uncomplicated), and the decathlon (long and complex). After reading examples presented in the book, readers can determine which Olympic event best matches their situation and lead/act with that analogy in mind. Approaching change with this kind of clarity, I think, will mean the difference between survival and its alternative for many organizations. In addition to mental clarity, the book provides examples of successful transformations made possible through quality communications (one corporation's vision was depicted on a mural), sharpened focus, and the ability to recognize opportunity no matter what guise it may come in. Highly recommended!

      Book Description

The traditional image of contemporary Africa is of a continent dogged by poverty, drought, degradation and famine. This study, drawing on the best work of the past decade and based on researched case studies from East and West Africa, rejects the notion of runaway desertification, driven by population growth and inappropriate land use. It suggests a more optimistic model of sustainable land use and an appropriate set of policy priorities to support dryland peoples in their efforts to sustain land and livelihoods.

5 out of 5 stars Roots in the African Dust.......2000-06-05

Roots in the African Dust Michael Mortimore is best known for his extensive studies of farming systems, environmental change and human adaptation to drought in the drylands of northern Nigeria. Mortimore's focus is on local, populist human adaptations to a harsh and complex environment. He developed his research focii when teaching geography at the universities of Ahmadu Bello and Bayero in Nigeria for over twenty-five years, before moving to the UK in the late 1980s where he is now a consultant. He has produced several influential and thought provoking texts; these include Adapting to Drought (1989), Working the Sahel (with W.M. Adams, 1999) and a revisionist account of livelihoods in Machakos, Kenya entitled More People, Less Erosion (with M Tiffen and F Gichuki, 1994). Roots in the African Dust is a synthesis volume, accessible to students, scholars and policymakers, that reviews some of the empirical material contained in these and other works. The book offers a forceful argument that the sub-Saharan drylands (the natural environment, and the people) are still coping under conditions of environmental, monetary and demographic stress. Ten well-presented, liberally illustrated chapters respond to questions posed in the introduction. If we believe expert views, Mortimore says, the Sahelian peoples should have been engulfed by an expanding Sahara many years ago, livestock markets should have collapsed due to overgrazing, farms would have been obliterated by land degradation, fuelwood should have run out, and entire areas depopulated for lack of economic opportunity. Since rural communities farming systems clearly still exist, the author uses several local examples to challenge these erronous crisis discourses. The second chapter addresses the legacy of worries about desertification and its impacts. Mortimore concludes that desertification is usually short-term, and reversible. Chapter three responds to the need to earth the global discourse in the realities of dryland households objectives (p38) since the majority of decisions about farming in Africa (outside the major commercial farms and ranch areas) are taken by smallholders. Defining farmers goals in terms of welfare and the reproductive needs of households, he offers a rich selection of material on labour, crop mixes and land use systems, technical change, trees, water management, and the importance of livestock (walking resources). Three chapters examine risk management. Systems primarily dependent on pastoralism are shown to use opportunistic stocking and herd mobility in an unstable, but resilient environment. Farmers exploit rain and moisture, and manage technological and biological diversity through sequential decision-making. Holding to a broad definition if the African household as a network of implicit contracts (following Robert Netting), Mortimore shows how risk is negotiated through maintenance of household numbers, a focus on flexible food production, and famine avoidance. He recognises that catastrophic policy errors and economic greed contributed to recent famines, but concludes that Sahelian farming is resilient (p111). This is partly due to non-farm activities, and the vigorous marketing of crops and animals (despite price and demand fluctuations and political uncertainty). Wage labour (involving circulatory migration), asset liquidation, agricultural sales, and exploitation of social networks also help to see people through hardship, and diversification away from agriculture and pastoralism is not the act of desperate people. A clear policy recommendation here is the necessity to keep borders permeable to migrants; in the absence of a rich industrial or commercial sector in most African countries, individuals will still keep their links to their rural homes. A further three chapters examine the extent of soil degradation, merits of agricultural intensification, and conservation of biotic resources. Mortimore claims that high population densities fuel intensification of agricultural production, if other constraints are absent. His well-known Machakos studies are used to demonstrate how commercial opportunities and population pressures drive resource conservation. The highlight of the book is the last chapter, where he speculates on the driving forces behind the transformation of rural African land use systems, again trying to demonstrate resilience and diversity in locally managed livelihoods. Africa's environmental and human systems change at different rates, but their trajectories are closely linked. Transitions are underway in land uses, and these are economic, demographic and institutional. Policy must, for Mortimore, follow a populist model by nourishing local creativity and adaptability (a version of Paul Richard's indigenous agricultural revolution). All interventions must be technically and culturally appropriate, and the goal of environmental management might be best served by protecting local innovation and investment against crises, for example through improving access to markets and recognising the need for free circulation of people and capital. Mortimore's project is, therefore, an intriguing and a potentially controversial one. In holding to a notion of strong (Boserupian) human adaptation to environmental and economic stresses, there is an open invitation for the political ecologist/economist (some cited above) to wade in with countervailing evidence of class exploitation, conflict, the systematic prevention of intensification or human development, or economic crisis brought on by commodity markets or corruption. Social and political conflict is downplayed (but not excluded) in the book. Not much is said about struggle and open resistance and why such struggles (often gendered, or to do with access issues) might have been necessary. Although at no point does the author say that rural Nigerians and Kenyans are always capable of solving problems without the state or any external assistance, but his view is that they usually are, and that the state and development agencies may not be suitable agents of positive agricultural transformation. Nonetheless, I have great faith in the author's experience, his findings, and his main recommendations. So much hinges on whether Northern Nigeria and Machakos (in particular) are typical of other regions and situations. Intensified agricultural systems have not always developed elsewhere, because different social and environmental histories apply. What is most gratifying is that Mortimore retains an attachment to rigorous comparative fieldwork that, frankly, few other scholars can demonstrate; a dedication to supporting the African smallholder; and a methodology that places equal weight on the natural environment, and the relationship between environmental change and human response. The book is an example of the real contribution of the committed geographer to African agrarian and development studies, and it is pleasing to have a single volume that offers such a breadth of analysis in a holistic, wide-ranging view of rural livelihoods and landscapes.

Extensive maps, directions, advice, practical tips, recommendations for fly shops and sporting goods, and more, combine to make Flyfisher's Guide To Wisconsin an enthusiastically recommended "quick reference" resource for Wisconsin anglers. Wisconsin libraries should have a copy of the Flyfisher's Guide To Wisconsin in their Hunting/Fishing collections.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for fishermen.......2003-06-23

I don't fish at all, but this book made me understand why someone would want to. Even if you aren't interested in fishing, the author gives wonderful descriptions of the backwaters of the state. Canoers and hikers will find this book of use. The author obviously has a deep love for nature and the places in this book, and it is very infectious.

5 out of 5 stars Wisconsin finally has a fishing bible.......2003-05-16

An enormous book. It's certain to become the de facto fishing guide for the state, and not just for fly fishing (though that is the main focus). The author covers just about every puddle and stream (he's obviously done his research). Amazingly, it's actually quite an entertaining read: well laid out, with good area maps and illustrations, nice photos and pretty good tips on where to stay, eat etc. along with the occasional anecdote by the author. If you need a guide book for a trip to Wisconsin then this is without question the one to get.

              5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Reference.......2002-09-10

This is an invaluable reference. I've been searching for weeks for materials related to noise control in a residential setting. I've found only one "expert" in the yellow pages and he charges hundreds for his advice. This book provides all of the information he provided and more. Although, the editing isn't great and there are typos and other errors, the content is first-rate. For once, this book was exactly what I expected.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A132743. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This report documents the Moving Map Composer (MMC) software system developed by scientists in NRL Code 7441. The MMC software is resident on the AV-8B Map 2 Station, which NRL designed and configured in support of AV-8B mission planners and pilots in the field. These MMC driven Map 2 Stations enable AV-8B users to perform the following functions: (1) Design and build Aircraft Optical Disk (AOD) images from user specified Compressed Aeronautical Chart (CAC) and scanned chart data; (2) Include emergency check lists and reconnaissance photographs in an AOD image; (3) Write completed AOD images to militarized Write Once Read Many AODs; (4) Evaluate failed AODs and recover from failed AOD image builds; (5) Design and build Mission Planning System Compact Disk Images (MPS CDIs) from user specified CAC, scanned chart, and DTED data; (6) Write MPS CDIs to Recordable Compact Disk (CD-R) for mission planning purposes; and (7) Scan and compress paper charts into a CAC compatible format (when CAC or Arc Digitized Raster Graphics (ADRG) are not available) and include them in an AOD image or MPS-CDI. These Map 2 Stations will completely replace all map data functions and all optical disk image functions that are currently handled by the AV-8B Map, Operator, and Maintenance Stations (MOMS).

                          Book Description

Two of the most acclaimed reference works in the area of acoustics in recent years have been our Encyclopedia of Acoustics, 4 Volume set and the Handbook of Acoustics spin-off. These works, edited by Malcolm Crocker, positioned Wiley as a major player in the acoustics reference market. With our recently published revision of Beranek & Ver's Noise and Vibration Control Engineering, Wiley is a highly respected name in the acoustics business.
Crocker's new handbook covers an area of great importance to engineers and designers. Noise and vibration control is one largest areas of application of the acoustics topics covered in the successful encyclopedia and handbook. It is also an area that has been under-published in recent years. Crocker has positioned this reference to cover the gamut of topics while focusing more on the applications to industrial needs. In this way the book will become the best single source of need-to-know information for the professional markets.
