Something for Everyone. . .and then some........2000-09-28

A thoroughly engaging and entertaining book, If Only We Would Listen, contains all of the hopes and dreams, the challenges and successes, the triumphs and tragedies, and the incredible courage of Julie and Doreen when they merged their smaller herds of dairy goats and dedicated their lives to dairy farming on a commercial scale in a very beautiful and seemingly ideal location. However, this is not the focus of the book, although their story does unfold in the background of this captivating work that supports the age-old saying that "truth is stranger [and funnier, and more enlightening, with more surprising twists and turns] than fiction"

The author introduces each of the characters and brings them and their stories to life so masterfully that I feel as if I could have visited the herd and identified each of them quite easily. I laughed until I thought my sides would split, shed tears at the tragedies that were much fewer in number than they would have been without the enormous heart and determination of the author and her partner to stop "The Plague" from taking another life, and felt enormous admiration for both the goats and their caregivers.

If Only We Would Listen touched my heart and soul and expanded my awareness of the feelings, wisdom, and communication of animals, and the connectedness among them and between them and humans who are open to it. There is much we can learn from the animals that share this earth with us, and the author shares some of the knowledge and insight that she has gained and undoubtedly continues to gain from her charges, while entertaining the reader chapter after chapter in a manner reminiscent of the books of James Herriott.

There seems to be something for everyone in this wonderful book, and it has definitely left me wanting more.

After providing a brief autobiography Mark Allen, who does not seem the slightest bit arrogant, recounts the few days of and before Ironman Hawaii '87. The book clearly shows that Allen spends a lot of time sports-psychoanalyzing himself and his competitors (contrasting Dave Scott's seemingly machine like approach to racing.) The intimate description of IH '87 is interesting. The end of the book provides brief, but useful training advice incorporating heart rate monitoring.

Since the date this book was written Mark Allen has progessed as an athlete to reach even greater glory and to conquer the Hawaiin Ironman, winning the race more than any other man in the 90's. In a sport where any of the top ten competitors are physically capable of winning on the day, I have no doubt that the mental strategies contained in this book have been the distinguishing characteristics between Mark and other athletes. The book deals with a brief description of Marks history in the sport, mainly with his 1987 season and the successes and dissapointments of that year culminating in the Hawaiin Ironman. Unlike the plethora of training material available today, this book deals with how the author motivates himself, focuses, faces his fears, and controls his mental energy in all aspects of his life particularly in triathlon.

If you are serious about getting 100% out of your body and enjoying training and racing in any endurance sport, read this book.

pretty good.......2007-10-05

This grammar is pretty good. I don't have experience with other grammars but it has been useful in everything for which I have used it yet. My only complaints are that the index lists terms under section number (sections outnumber pages), which took a while to figure out, and that some obscure constructions are listed as being in a nearly unrelated section with sometimes only a very passing mention, unless I'm still not using the thing right. At any rate, very helpful.

An excellent Latin grammar!.......2007-08-10

I started using this classic grammar online. When I saw how inexpensive it is on Amazon, even the hardback, I had to order one. I have enjoyed it ever since. Even the most bizarre constructions found in Latin documents are in there someplace. It is so full of interesting items, and lucidly explained, that I enjoy reading it regularly just to keep improving my Latin. I even find the historical explanations valuable. They don't necessarily improve my understanding, but I find it easier to remember forms and irregularities when I see where they came from. For example, I learned that the "ba" in the imperfect tense comes from the same Indo-European forms that produced the verb "be" in English.
I'm not in a position to compare it to other grammars, so I can't call it the "best", but it sure works for me. I just bought my second copy because I found myself in the United States without mine, and I needed to translate Latin documents.
This grammar is probably too advanced for someone who has not already studied Latin. It helps to know English grammar too, which unfortunately even English majors don't know anymore (and shamelessly brag about).
If this grammar is too advanced, Oxford sells a small paperback grammar of Latin by Morwood that is very good, doesn't require as much knowledge of English grammar, and is inexpensive.
Finally, I can't understand why Amazon doesn't make their excellent hardback edition easier to find. They do sell it (I just bought one), but you have to enter the ISBN number in advanced search:
ISBN 1-58510-042-0.
It's a great buy on Amazon, so don't settle for paperback.

Good reference.......2007-06-10

This is definitely among my favorite Latin grammar references (along with Gildersleeve's and Bennett's. As other reviewers mentioned, this is a grammar reference. Do not expect to learn Latin from this book. If you already have an understanding of Latin grammar or are merely wondering how the Latin language works, this book is an excellent choice. Allen and Greenough's New Latin Grammar will be useful to teachers, students, and former students of Latin interested in maintaining/increasing their capabilities.

Teacher's Grammar Reference.......2007-01-16

This is an excellent resource for Latin teachers or classical scholars, since almost any grammar, syntax or prosody question is addressed within its pages; however, a bit of time is required for the user to become familiar with the general organization of the text. Although it has been recently updated, and the sections on meter have been completely re-written from the1903 edition, the language is still quite formal. For these reasons, it is perhaps a bit difficult for high school students to use as a home reference. It should, however, be on the classroom reference shelf.

This book is one of the most comprehensive latin books out. It has nearly everything a latin student, like me, would need.

This is one of the classic Latin grammars. I have a vintage copy printed 100 years ago or so. It is good to still be able to by a new copy of such great reference books. Every Latin scholar should own one.

This paper uses a new dataset to reassess the relationship between bank ownership and bank performance, providing separate estimations for developing and industrial countries. It finds that state-owned banks located in developing countries tend to have lower profitability and higher costs than their private counterparts, and that the opposite is true for foreign-owned banks. The paper finds no strong correlation between ownership and performance for banks located in industrial countries. Next, in order to test whether the differential in performance between public and private banks is driven by political considerations, the paper checks whether this differential widens during election years; it finds strong support for this hypothesis.

This paper examines the governance of Spanish banks regarding two main issues. First, does poor economic performance activate governance interventions that favor the removal of executive directors and the merger of non-performing banks? And, second, does the relationship between governance intervention and economic performance vary with the ownership form of the bank? We find a negative relationship between performance and governance intervention for banks, but the results change for each form of ownership and each type of intervention. Internal-control mechanisms work for Independent Commercial banks, but Savings banks show weaker internal mechanisms of control and the only significant relationship between performance and governance intervention that appears is for mergers. The Spanish Savings banks, with a peculiar form of ownership that, in fact, implies a lack of ownership, give voice to several stakeholder groups with no clear allocation of property rights. Nevertheless, their economic performance is not generally affected. Product-market competition compensates for those weaker internal governance mechanisms, and non-performing banks are not fully protected from disappearing.
