Though plenty of working computer consultants would argue that you can't teach their trade in a book, author Alan Simon takes a stab at it. In this book the experienced consultant shares tales from the field and lessons he's learned, saving you the trouble of learning them the hard way.

That's not to say that this book represents a consultancy-in-a-box. Any business endeavor is going to involve trial, error, waste, and second thoughts. Simon's book merely increases the odds that successes will outnumber failures and that your new business won't die of honest mistakes in its critical early years. Furthermore, Simon does not (and cannot be expected to) impart any technical knowledge through these pages. If you're even thinking about becoming a consultant, it's assumed you have a high level of technical expertise.

The author opens with a discussion of the key questions that must be answered by any business plan: What will the business do, and why? He discusses several dozen consulting specialties--including four focused on the year 2000 problem--and the specific issues involved in running each. He then goes on to cover writing business plans, managing employees and subcontractors, and dealing with finances. (His coverage of "revenue spurts" and "dead times" rings particularly true.) He talks about such perennial challenges as figuring out what customers want and how to get more business without swamping yourself or sacrificing quality, all in a readable style. --David Wall

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of time and money!!!.......2005-01-12

I have bought and read several books that were nothing to write home about but never felt the urge to write a review about them. This book is an exception to that rule.
I would not recommend this book to anyone, not even my enemy.

From my point of view, this author does not appear to have enough experience in consulting. Most of the stuffs he mentioned in this book were common sense/knowledge to even anyone not into computer. He failed to provide any significant info. His style of writing was like hiding info from the reader or he does not have any experience whatsoever on what he's writing about.

Please don't waste your time on a book where all the author has to say is that you have to work hard to be a successful consultant -do I need to buy a book to tell me that?

Go to the movies, or read on of the following (in this order): Peter Meyer (Getting started in computer consulting) Rick Freedman (The computer consultant) Gerald M Weinberg (The secrets of consulting) Enough said.

    2 out of 5 stars Not A Beginner's Book.......2000-06-23

I am afraid that I must agree with the other reviewers. This book had the potential to be a decent reference, but the information is choppy...the "will be covered in a later chapter" stuff will drive you crazy trying to track down all you need to accomplish simple tasks. There are better books out there.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty well not the best.......2000-05-18

This book is not the best on the subject, I was a little upset about this purchase. Through out the book he makes these comments "..we'll discuss this more in chapter X" or " ...like we said in chapter X" I count 143 lines of these and gave up, it became aggravating and I stopped reading the book.

1 out of 5 stars Not help at all.......1998-12-06

I can not imagine this book can have a 4th edition. It is full of empty words, not any practical help. I believe the author has very narrow computer consulting experience. Totally waste of money and time.

    Book Description

Although the shift to e-business may seem absolute, it is astonishing to realize that up to 80 percent of small businesses don't even have Web sites. The market is still ripe for Web consultants, but they need up-to-the-minute information and the most effective tools to stay on top of a very crowded market.

Independent Web consultants must have both technical smarts and sound business skills, and this do-it-all book cuts right to the chase on both fronts. The first section covers 37 business topics, including: financing and fees * guerrilla marketing, promotion, and sales * creating effective materials.

The second section is a primer on the latest and best technologies, including: XML, Voice XML, WAP, and PHP * spiders, robots, cookies, and search engines * chat, conference, and e-mail * Shockwave and Flash * and dozens more.

The book also features three entire chapters of sample letters, ready-to-use forms, sales scripts, and speeches; UNIX command and HTML quick-reference appendixes; and more than 100 screen shots, sidebars, and tips.

Jessica has taught this subject matter on the HP website. The course was great. I built my first website successfully because of her. Now I'm going professional. I was laid off a few months ago and needed a new career. Jessica gave me confidence in her course and her book gives me all sorts of ideas!

I hope to make my first million soon :-) and it will be all because of Jessica.

I read this book when it first came out.
I liked the simplicity of it. It has a good recipe for running
your website consulting firm and gives you hardcore technical information and strategy for us computer engineers alike.
I kept this as a basic reference for myself if I needed info
on HTML, VRML, Plugins, Cookies, JPEGS, UUNET and Business Planning.

    Enjoy.

I recently finished the book. What a great read. I zipped through it, and now keep it handy as a reference tool. I espeically found the section on fees and charging for Internet based services to be helpful.

We started in the marketing business, with a specialty in sponsorship -- the ultimate in analog communications. Having built LitLamp.com, we have developed expertise in web strategy, planning, interface with engineers, copywriting and website promotion. We are now developing plans to begin offering these services. Here at LitLamp.com your words have become a part of our daily banter.

There is so little quality information available to web entrepreneurs who are breaking new ground. More sizzle than steak. Your book came at just the right time.

I was very disappointed is this here monograph. It pretty much sucked and I did not get much out of it. It was all about animals and stuff. It has like a Panda on the cover, but in truth panda bears recieve scant attention. I guess that goes to show that the old saying is true: one can never judge a book by its cover.

Learn how to meet challenges and excel in soccer competition. Focused for Soccer is the single mental skills training guide to maximize performance on the soccer field.

Bill Beswick, the world's leading authority on the mental game of soccer, offers his insights and instruction throughout the book. He explains how he has applied the training techniques successfully in his many years as a coach and consultant. Beswick's approach emphasizes playing “first with the head, then with the heart,” developing players' decision-making skills and keeping their emotional responses in check.

Focused for Soccer will help you sharpen mental skills and unleash your full potential. Better than general sport psychology text, Focused for Soccer is filled with practical tips and step-by-step techniques that transfer directly to the game. Part of Human Kinetics' popular Focused for Sports series, this book makes the case that physical skills and conditioning must be combined with psychological skills to be a champion.

Saw Beswick at the SMU coaching clinic and he was absolute spot on in his presentation on the role of the coach and the development of the player in the modern game of soccer.

As a thirteen year veteran of coaching high school and club soccer, it is hard for me not to view any book with a bit of skepticism. So upon purchasing this book I was intrigued to see what Beswick had to say and not positive he could teach me anything new. I was dead wrong, he is fantastic and much of what he writes about can be transferred to sports other than soccer. I was especially impressed with his ideas and examples of assessment tools for coaches and for player self-reflection. I have already begun to create my own versions of them in order to use them with my side this fall. A highly recommended read for players and coaches alike.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A must-read for serious soccer coaches.......2001-01-31

Bill Beswick, one of the world's premier sports psychologists (currently employed by England and Manchester United) and an accomplished coach in his own right, has written a book that is destined to take a place on the priority reading list of all aspiring soccer coaches. In it, he describes the mental, emotional, psychological, and lifestyle aspects of a complete player. The book is full of tables, checklists, and charts for self and team assessment, and the book has been beautifully tailored so as to be applicable for both coaches and players. The main strength of this book, though, is its practical recommendations for every topic it addresses (visualization, self-control, team cohesion, confidence, and mental toughness to name a handful). For example, Beswick gives the example of a striker who is not scoring goals in the chapter on confidence. How does the coach, in cooperation with the player, address the situation to help him regain confidence? Beswick asserts that other components of his job description should be brought to his attention (by asking the player), and that he should be encouraged to self-evaluate his performance based on how well he completed all of the aspects of his job description, not just scoring goals. This may sound like a "feel good" tactic at first glance, but Beswick also provides case studies of specific players at the highest levels who were positively affected by this approach (In this case, Dean Sturridge of Derby County). The book encourages a holistic approach to both coaching and playing, and discusses the benefits and potential pitfalls along the way to creating that holistic balance within a team and its players. Indeed, this is the kind of coaching and type of player that must prevail in the future if soccer is to continue to grow and develop, and Bill Beswick has done the sport of soccer and those who love it a distinct service by writing this book.

Bill Beswick is the world's leading sports psychologist for soccer. He works with leading European clubs. In this book, he not only tells you what you need to know, he shows you how to put it to work! He shares real-world examples from his work with the European clubs to show you how it works. I was at the NSCAA Convention this year and last year and his sessions were standing-room-only.

5 out of 5 stars How Spiritual Writers Can Pierce The Publishing Industry.......2006-02-26

Writers of spiritually-related subjects should celebrate: finally the link between right-brain writing and left-brain publishing has been met. As editor of OfSpirit.com, I have read shelves of books on both writing and publishing, but never has an author so brilliantly matched these two separate processes to authorship with a style and order that is practical, honest and useable.

I constantly hear the frustrations of OfSpirit.com's network of spiritual writers who are trying to pierce the publishing industry's requirements and protocol. Creative people sometimes lack the business know-how to translate their valuable messages into the proper format necessary to prove the marketability of their manuscripts. Like any business, publishers are as much concerned about how well their books will sell as they are about how well they are written, maybe more. Spiritual Writing teaches writers the realities of this business and how to package your book and yourself to increase your chances of success.
