Customer Reviews:
Still well worth the read.......2007-09-24
I read "Restoring Prosperity" when it was just coming out. Eleven years layer, I am still recommending this book to people.
As this world we share changes, we must also change. We must learn from the past, and try not to repeat the mistakes of others. When it comes to industry, this book is one of the guideposts that can help you examine your own business, and see if you are falling into the traps that lead many to the unemployment line.
The book is well laid out, and easy to read. Between the story aspects with first person accounts, hard numbers to back things up, and explanatory notes, you get a complete picture of the problems that were faced, solutions that were applied, and results.
Not all the results were good. They do not cover up the bad. And in the good results, side effects of many sorts were exposed.
No matter what your industry is, this book should be owned by the company, and passed around between all the managers, foremen, office personnel and other workers. That is because it has important information for everyone about how and why a company needs to work together, what compromises work, and what ones don't.
It also exposes key elements in globalization, and how working with foreign corporations adds new challenges, and new results.
This is not a silver bullet book, or cure all for a company's woes. But it is good information, in a good format, that deserves inclusion in your company's brain trust.

Book Description
-- Gary Varner, Environmental Ethics
Are bacteriophage T4 and the long-nosed elephant fish valuable in their own right? Nicholas Agar defends an affirmative answer to this question by arguing that anything living is intrinsically valuable. This claim challenges received ethical wisdom according to which only human beings are valuable in themselves. The resulting biocentric or life-centered morality forms the platform for an ethic of the environment.
Agar builds a bridge between the biological sciences and what he calls "folk" morality to arrive at a workable environmental ethic and a new spectrum -- a new hierarchy -- of living organisms. The book overturns common-sense moral belief as well as centuries of philosophical speculation on the exclusive moral significance of humans. Spanning several fields, including philosophy of psychology, philosophy of science, and other areas of contemporary analytic philosophy, Agar analyzes and speaks to a wide array of historic and contemporary views, from Aristotle and Kant, to E. O. Wilson, Holmes Rolston II, and Baird Callicot. The result is a challenge to prevailing definitions of value and a call for a scientifically-informed appreciation of nature.

Description:
This study uses a social exchange framework to address child welfare job retention. Data collected from an in-person survey of child welfare staff (Time 1) and staff retention information collected 15-17 months later (Time 2) were used to test hypotheses regarding the effects of extrinsic rewards, perceived organizational support, supervisor support, and intrinsic job value on job retention. Logistic regression and multilevel logistic regression models were conducted to assess the relative effects of individual- and organization-level influences on maintaining a child welfare job. Factors positively associated with job retention included the perceptions that an employer promoted life-work balance, that a supervisor was supportive and competent, and that few other job alternatives were available. In addition, organization-level turnover rates and unmeasured organizational characteristics affected the likelihood of job retention.

Book Description
A profusely illustrated survey of the theme of equestrianism in the history of the European nobility. Co-published with the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC)
Customer Reviews:
Scholarly, Thoughtful, and Horse-Wise.......2001-02-16
I used this book as my primary source for my bachelor's thesis project. It is by far the most through and intellectual book of Renaissance and Baroque equestrian art which I have read. Liedke is an educated, high-level horseman with a real understanding of the finer considerations of the art of horsemanship. Included is commentary of the birth of dressage and the "Classical" riding style, relative art historical comparisons between works, topical commentary on other pubications, and many beautiful plates of some of the most famous monuments extant, viewed from the unique perspective of the horseman. I also recommend Laura Camins' "Glorious Horsemen," although dressage enthusiasts will take issue with many of her statements.

None better than "Drummer in the Woods".......2005-05-03
I can agree with, and underscore, every single word of WDMcCann's review and will add this: neither the vast power of money nor the vast blarney of modern media can reach even the shadow of the Wisdom and Soul shining from every syllable of Burton Spiller's "Drummer in the Woods". His "Drummer in the Woods is truly Writing for the Ages that will give something of real value to you, be you humble or high.
Spiller is inspired.......2003-08-03
The reviewer who claims Spiller's book is detached from the reality of grouse hunting and predictable is obviously a novice at the game and no student of literature.
First, Spiller was formerly a "market hunter" of grouse. At the time of publication of "Drummer in The Woods," it is estimated that he had shot more grouse on the wing than any person alive. He developed into a sportsman and regreted the time spent market hunting, although he had obtained a formidible education as a result of that experience. Those of us who have been
seduced by the electricity of the thunder bird exploding from a thick stand of young yellow painted Aspen, over the staunch point of an English Setter, are drawn to the works of Burton Spiller with a reverence that is indescribable.
Next, and more importantly, Spiller conveys the experience to the reader better than any writer before or since his time. To read Spiller is to be soulfully connected with the sport and our maker. He is not only a superlative outdoor writer, history will paint Spiller as an icon of American sporting literature.
Spiller is in a class by himself.......2003-05-09
This is, perhaps, the most entertaining of all Spiller's works. The review from the gentlemen from Pennsylvania is unfathomable. This guy must not understand the sport of grouse hunting at all. To describe a man like Burton Spiller as arrogant and boring is like saying Lawrence Oliver is a poor actor.
Burton Spiller was a man with limited education, but whose prose has an effortless sublime quality which demonstates his place as one of the finest outdoor writers. If a gifted writer makes you feel and share the experience he writes of, then Burt truely had the gift. He was a man who loved grouse, bird dogs, his family, his life, and God, and compelled his readers to love and respect him. To not appreciate the best work of Burton Spiller (the most talented of grouse hunting authors) is to not love grouse hunting.
Ignore the first reviewer........2000-06-14
This is a classic piece of upland hunting literature. Burton Spiller is a gentleman and a great storyteller. In this book he recounts his own youthful introduction to the lifelong passion of grouse hunting and many of the adventures that followed. Although based on his life experiences, "Drummer" seems romantic and almost mythical. I think it is difficult for many contemporary readers to imagine that the landcape in which this book was set ever existed.
Grouse hunting made so SIMPLE!.......2000-05-09
Spiller's book would appeal to anyone who enjoys the superficial, uninspired articles found in popular sporting periodicals. A must buy for those to whom hunting is as predictable as a game of tic-tac-toe. Splendidly detached from the realities of the field. Hunt 'em up.

Customer Reviews:
But What about the Trivium?.......2006-08-24
Moeller and Moeller have filled a gap in the practice of literature circles by introducing the Socratic method into the mix. As a teacher at a classical school affiliated with ACCS, I use lit circles quite a bit in my Omnibus classes and was hoping to expand the Socratic element this school year (2006-07), so the title of this book reeled me in. Though it has a lot of useful guidelines I can share with my students, I was disappointed at the way the author contrasted two of his own teachers, Prosser and Basil (real names?), painting Prosser as weak because he focused on behavioral objectives (i.e., "passive learning,") rather than using Basil's Socratic questioning (i.e., "active learning"). In the classical trivium, we would say that one teacher focused on the "grammar stage" of learning and the other on the "logic" or "rhetoric" stages. Perhaps both Prosser and Basil could improve by using all three stages of the trivium. Rather than turning education into an either/or proposition (didactic/passive = bad; Socratic/active = good), the authors could improve by pointing out the importance of passing through the grammar stage before moving on to the logic and rhetoric stages. On p. 5, the authors say that reason and evidence are better tests of truth than authority and/or experience. Certainly we want our students to be able to reason from evidence, but why would we throw out authority altogether? Let's say we're discussing a current event such as illegal immigration or the Patriot Act. We can look at evidence and reason all we want, but sooner or later we have to look at what the Constitution (our "authority") allows and does not allow. On the same page, the authors indicate that in the less desirable mode, "evaluation is factual recall of data" while in the more desirable mode, "evaluation is application of undertanding and interpretation of data." Well, actually, evaluation is both: mastery of facts in the grammar mode and logical analysis and evaluation in the logic and rhetoric modes. It doesn't have to be an either/or proposition. The book does include some good models on Socratic questioning, but because of the lack of depth regarding all three stages of the classical model (the trivium), I had to dock it one point.
