Description:
The present study investigates the cytotoxic mechanisms induced by zinc (Zn) in haemocytes of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Haemocytes play a key role in the immune defence of mussels. Micromolar concentration of Zn (50 @mM) play an important role in the elevation of pHi and increase in Na^+ influx in haemocytes. The observed effects were inhibited by the Na^+/H^+ exchanger (NHE) inhibitor, ethyl-N-isopropyl-amiloride (EIPA). Furthermore, our results showed that Zn caused an increase in O"2^- production that was reversed after NHE inhibition. Phorbol ester (PMA) caused a significant rise both in pHi and Na^+ influx as well as in O"2^- production. These effects were reversed by calphostin C. Our results indicated that Zn also enhanced haemocyte attachment to both BSA and laminin which was reversed by EIPA and calphostin C. The enhancement of haemocytes attachment to both BSA and laminin after Zn suggests that it is likely to play a signal role in cytoskeleton-dependent process of cell growth and migration in mussel M. galloprovincialis haemocytes. We conclude that Zn induces a signaling pathway with the involvement of NHE, PKC, O"2^- and @a"1- and @b-adrenergic receptors.

_Build to Laugh: How to Construct Sketch Comedy with the Fast and Funny Formula_ is no recent release. Still in print and readily available, the book has already encouraged a decade of emerging comedy writers to think about their material in deeper ways. Its long shelf life came from its clarity and its playful explanations. It actually helps writers learn to be funny. My own reasons for reading Kerr's book may be unique, however. I am no comedy writer, nor am I a comic, really. I teach history and philosophy, mostly to students who want to be CEO's, rock stars, millionaires, and Special Forces operatives. Lucky for us all, a course or two in the humanities is still required for the bachelor's degree. So in trying to reach people with little genuine interest in history and philosophy, I have discovered an important tradeoff. While sleeping students may seem more civil and polite, they retain much less of the lecture materials than do conscious students. What I have learned from teaching is that giggling students--even when laughing at the silly teacher's antics--come to more classes and retain more of the serious stuff between the laughable. And what have I learned from Kerr's excellent little book? [Drum roll, please!] I have learned the source of "the funny." Hilarious stuff happens right in front of us every day. It is in the newspapers, at the parking lots, in our personal tragedies, and yes, even in history and philosophy books. And you can learn how to find it and to use it.
So can ANYONE really learn to be funny? Kerr offers no guarantees with her advice gleaned from her own experience as a comic, especially not for history teachers. But her "formula" is rather easy to follow. Most of the "eight steps" empower a reader to "see" the material in new ways, find the joke, understand why it is funny, and to toy with perspective. Much of this advice can be found in any good writing textbook. But who wants to actually read a writing textbook? Kerr's book, about comedy, is a fun read. You will find yourself bracketing moments, thoughts, and situations that burst with levity, and they just need your help to let out the laughter. And here, I can provide a guarantee if Kerr does not. If you will look for funny things you will find them, even in textbooks, ancient archives, and philosophy lectures. Anyone standing in front of groups of people (teachers, politicians, bosses, drill sergeants, pan handlers, preachers) will benefit from a close reading of _Build to Laugh_.

Don't start your own service business without reading this book. Mahan's insights into common consulting problems and how to address them is amazing. This is the second time I have started my own consulting practice and this time, I am armed with much better information on how to sell, bill, and propose jobs. I keep rereading the book so I can absorb all of the great information. It is easy to read and understand.

Good Sales Book.......2007-05-20

"Selling is the second oldest profession, often confused with the first" is the quote on the back of the book. True, many see sales as prostitution, but this book helps show how it is really elevated.

The book has great information on being client focused. The author does not miss anything, and every sales person will benefit from reading this book. I do have to warn the reader that is is a bit like a "text book", and not an easy read. However, it is worth it once you get through the whole thing, you will have a better appreciation for selling correctly.

A Welcome Reference.......2007-04-26

The intention of this review isn't to rehash all the reviews you see before you -- there are many detailed ones below and above that can give you some good details. I am hoping to shed some light on the reason I believe we have some who LOVE this book, and some who found it disappointing.

I will confess that I purchased this book because I had to: my consulting firm (the biggest of the Big 3) made this a required reading. I ordered it from Amazon and read it over the course of four short flights.

I loved this book. There is a lot of good common sense in here that is needs to be shared -- for some it's not news (and hence why maybe it didn't get a high rating from everyone), but unless we incorporate it into our thinking then we will continually be faced with either guessing what the client wants, or business development expenses that simply can't be justified.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone at a manager level or above in professional services. Absolutely.

Academic Sales at best and not for me ..........2007-02-21

I am sure many people love this book but man it is academia at its best if that's what you are looking for. Charts and graphs and decision matrix and everything but something real in my opinion. I see the world a little different than most but after thirty years in corporate America with Fortune 50's this is the last thing they need is more encouragment in the BS - but then that's just me. Obviously with the rating that is out here most dont agree so I'm still swimming upstream. I happen to have just read (see my review) The Best Damn Sales Book Ever and then this and go read it if you want to be a great sales person.

A Real Approach to Sales.......2007-01-16

I was introduced to this book, "Let's Get Real or Let's Not Play", about 5 years ago and it fundamentally changed the way I approach Strategic/Relationship based sales. If your role in your company is more "transactional sales" this book may be overkill. However, if you are looking for a sustainable and transferable methodology for Strategic/Relationship based sales - this book provides a solid platform that should help to enable marketplace success for you and your team.

Intended for lay readers (one doesn't have to be a wealthy tycoon or have an advanced degree in economics to put these techniques into practice!), The Best in the Game covers how to find the best distressed properties and foreclosures, how to legally flip properties, insider's tips for drumming up financing, how to purchase properties with no money down, and the nuts and bolts of investing in retail properties for profit. "You have to develop an understanding of how the foreclosure process works in your locality in order to uncover the information you need. Local custom and tradition may be more influential than simplicity in procedures. You have to discover how things have always been done around here. Your real estate lawyer and agent can be a big help. So too can courthouse employees working in the foreclosure section. Any legal move in real estate becomes part of the public record." Practical knowledge for first ime investors.......2007-04-22

I wish that I had "The Best in the Game" when I began my career as a real estate investor. I had to learn all the lessons the hard way. In "The Best in the Game" Kwesi Nichols and Tristan Cooley teach you the fundamentals of the business.

All legal and financial topics relevant to real estate investing are covered. From how to legally flip houses to how to buy foreclosures--it is all covered. When I was starting out in the business, the legal terms and the acronyms alone seemed overwhelming. Nichols and Cooley explain ARMS, ARV, and other important acronyms.

Nichols and Cooley explain that flipping is not always the best use of the property. Sometimes it is best to rent the property. "But if you have a source of income that enables you to meet monthly mortgage payments, you may decide to hold on to some properties." There is a saying in this business that you can sell once and rent forever.

Nichols and Cooley explain Section 8 housing. They list the specific demands HUD looks for in rental properties. Of course, this varies somewhat with each inspector.

Nichols and Cooley explain how to finance real estate investments. The easiest way is to have a line of credit or a private investor who believes in you. They stress that bankers and investors are risking their money on you, so you have to sell yourself as being willing and able to do whatever it takes to make each project work. "Some people are used to investing, and they take advantage of opportunities. Most people don't think in those terms. It never occurs to some people to use their fully-owned homes to leverage other investments."

As a broker, I often hear uninformed buyers talking about real estate bubbles, because they heard about it on last night's news. As I always tell them, I am not affected by "the real estate bubble" as an investor, broker, or home owner. I do not believe in the bubble. It was reassuring to read that Nichols and Cooley feel the same way. "We do not think there is a real estate bubble, because a bubble is caused by a sudden surge in prices unrelated to value..."

Real estate flipping sounds too good to be true. It is not. "The difficulties lie in locating such houses, known as fixer-uppers, at workable prices." How do you do this? Find a broker who likes to work with investors. Few like to work with investors. I have never understood this; I think it is because they do not understand investors. Also, make friends with real estate/estate attorneys. An attorney may know of a house in an estate that may need to be sold quickly. As an aside, also make friends with electricians, general contractors, plumbers, and etc....
Real estate investing is profitable. It takes time to learn the business, but "The Best in the Game" is a great resource that all real estate investors--new or seasoned-- need to keep in their offices. Nichols and Cooley not only know the business, they are also excellent coaches, as evident in "The Best in the Game."

This audio CD does not stand-alone very well, but used as a review of the material presented in the UNABRIDGED version it is fantastic. This book is one of the most encouraging books I have ever read. Mr. Dyess writes in an intellectual, yet down-to-earth, manner, which makes for an enjoyable reading and learning experience. He uses experiences from throughout his own life to show the reality of God. This book has shown me how much God cares for us and is wanting to bless us if we'll just allow Him to do so. I recommend it to anyone - whether they are looking for inspiration or just wanting to read for pleasure. It will touch the reader, and they will see God through Mr. Dyess' words.

This book has meant so much to me since I first read it three years ago. Over and over I can return to the stories in it to find new inspiration and challenge myself to follow God more fully every day. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to laugh, cry, or learn more about the reality of God in everyday life.

Mr. Dyess describes how God uses his everyday experiences to bring people to a personal relationship with Him. The key to evangelism is to be prepared to follow the Holy Spirit's urgings, which Mr. Dyess does on a regular basis. In the book he shares his own evangelistic encounters and how through various ways, people have become born-again Christians. He uses a catchy ice breaker to initiate conversations with strangers. Within minutes he has turned the focus around to spiritual matters.

The book is easy to read. You can relate to his experiences and apply to it to your life. I encourage others to check out this book.
