Cohesive, Thoughtful.......1999-01-24

When I got through reading Ken Roberston's book, I was struck by its far-reaching implications. As a corporate real estate professional in a medium-size Midwestern city, I realize that there are few companies in the U.S. that are making optimal use of their available real estate options. (I'm sure this applies equally to Robertson's Canada and every other Western industrialized country.) One hears a lot these days about "downsizing" and "outsourcing"--and these are certainly among the options to many organizations. But Robertson goes way beyond these obvious alternative space arrangements to discuss how an organization needs to rethink ALL of its space requirements. What makes this book so useful is that he takes this major and complex challenge and shows step-by-step how to approach it, involve all parties, and implement and evaluate pilot programs. This goes a long way toward avoiding costly surprises. Although Roberston presents plenty of examples and case histories, he does not explicitly show how his appoach should be tailored to each type of organization. Some readers may consider this a flaw. I think, however, that such a treatment would be beyond the scope of the book. The thoughtful real estate professional will want to bring his or her own experiences/situation to bear, anyway , in applying Roberston's methodology. I highly recommend the book for it cohesive approach. The 300 or so pages are worth FAR more than would be thirty 10-page publication articles on the subject.

A "Must" Read for any HR Professional.......1999-01-22

Here, at long last, is a book that presents the 'big picture' as far as integrating altenative space arrangements, alternative work arrangements, and information technology. These days, it's hard not to be caught up in the excitement about the latest communication breakthroughs and how they might be used in your office. This book leaps past the technojargon, sales hype, and vague theoretical musings to present practical, useful tools for analyzing your organization's present space and work arrangements, and determining what changes would be most helpful. The diagrams are well chosen, and the writing style is clear. It's hard to know just who might benefit most from the discussions--executives, corporate real estate professionals, HR professionals, and even IT people (who often need to be brought down to earth with the rest of us) could all appreaciate this book, as I did.

The information contained in Ken Robertson's book has proved to be invaluable in helping our organization implement necessary changes to increase efficiency. Very good introduction for practitioner........2006-01-04

The book of Shipley provides an easy to read introduction in the field of structural equations and causal inference from experimental data. Most concepts are very well explained and examples are provided to see how to apply the concepts practically. Without any reservation I recommend it to none experts in this field who want to learn the intermediate basics directly applicable to own problems, e.g., for biologists.

However, for people trained in more theoretical fields, e.g., computer science, the thorough verbal explanations of mathematical formular (which are provided) is a little tiring after the first 100 pages, because the relative simple formulas can easily be interpreted. Instead, I wished the book would provide more alternative approaches in form of statistical test to test for causality. For this reason, I would recommend not to rewrite the complete book, but only include one additional chapter written in a more technical style. Then it would be close to perfect.

Finally, I want to remark, that the historical notes given throughout the book are not only very intesting but also inspiring, because they remind not to oversee mathematical developments in the none mathematical literature. SEM is certainly a good example.

To summarize, this is really a decent book!

This book is one of the best in the subject and its approaches to causality are very straight forward, and uses interesting algorithms. This book is very clear, and the authors takes you stsep by step in order to perform causal analysis. I used this books in a course, and I really enjoyed its simplicity.

Path analysis and structural equation modeling.......2001-10-17

This is an excellent guidebook to path analysis and structural equations for biologists. The text is very readable (and even amusing in spots). There is interesting background on the development of path analysis and SEM, as well as thoughtful explanations of how these analyses can link hypotheses of causality to probability theory. New techniques for model testing are introduced that may add additional utility to the statistical method. I found it to be a thoughtful and thorough introduction to a potentially powerful new technique in biology and ecology.

Has some good chapters.......2007-03-24

This book has chapters written buy several authors some are pretty good some are pretty average. Overall there is alot of info in the book . Some is buy folks hunting high end lease's or guided hunts which is alot different than someone hunting public or heavily pressured land. Most of the authors have paid there dues and it comes through in there writing. It's a pretty good book overall. If there was a way to give 3 1/2 stars I'd probably give it that. I have 60+ books on Whitetail hunting this one is in the top 20.

No nonsense! To the point!.......2002-10-18

It's the appealing front cover that made me buy the book. It's the no nonsense, to the point content that drove me to recommend it to anybody who would like to know more about how to improve a company's bottomline through differentiation in service. Charts, graphs, adages, examples (of Disney, SKF bearing, McDonlad, UPS....) are abundant, telling how a company, particulary the top management whose involvement is necessary to make a real difference, should plan and execute a strategy in service. The seven chapters are well written with excellent elaboration, and I like the summary, and the do's and don'ts much in the end of each chapter very much. In a word, a good read!

Sheer Genius, the People's Poet Cartoonist Laureate.......2006-06-02

I start every day with the Tom Toles cartoon in the Washington Post, and consider him to be the Nation's poet cartoonist laureate. I've taken to buying his books as well, for cheer, for reflection, as gifts, and as a collector's item.

The publisher has done this book a real dis-service by not using Amazon's "about the book" information upload capabilities. The table of contents, for example, not provided by the publisher, is provided here to demonstrate that this is a "serious" cartoon book that is both hysterically funny, and poignantly pointed at REALITY. The contents, as organized by the author:

This is, quite simply, a sensational book. Tom Toles for President! (I smile--he's too good a man for the job, unless we change the way we elect Presidents).

Consider also Googling for his web site and sharing his daily cartoons with others--Tom Toles is as close as we get in America to the Solidarity movement and samizdat freedom thinkers that broke the back of communism--now we need to break the back of ideological extremism and predatory capitalism, and that can start with the sharing of Tom Tole's great work.

This research is based on the 2000 census. It shows a very profound change from the 1990 census, after which this writer presented his version of WHAT WE ARE. It was a hard decade for most of us as the world continues to change and take us with it.

In 1950, only ten percent of the population of the United States was non-white. Today, one in four Americans are black, Hispanic, or Asian. No country is home to more foreigners than the U.S. We now have people here from Ukraine, India, even the Middle East.

In the 19th century, we invented the telegraph, telephones, and electric lights. Then came radio, t.v., airplanes, automobiles, and the atom bomb. Along, came immigrants in droves. After WWII, the Japanese were given entry as we rebuilt their country. For half a century, this country absorbed immigrants from every corner of Europe.

The United States was 40% of the world's population in 2000 in every way. India has four times the population of U.S. but fewer people age 80 or older. By 2011, the number of elderly will increase dramatically as the 'baby boomers' turn 65.

By 2025, the population is projected to grow by 23%. In 2040, if no catastrophe overtakes us, Americans may outnumber western Europeans. In 2050, the proportion of old people will have doubled. By 2100, nonwhites and Hispanics are projected to make up 60% of the U.S. population.

H. G. Wells wrote, "the race between education and catastrophe is far from over." How the 21st century is determined by numbers but also by the vagaries of human nature.

Sam Roberts wrote THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE ROSENBERG CASE, is host of a daily t.v. interview show in New York City, and has been reporter, journalist, and an editor of the New York Times since 1983. He includes a bibliography, multiple charts, and extensive index to show the factual material he uses.

Information overload!!!! .......2004-10-02

Imagine the daunting task of taking the raw data from the 2000 U.S. census and trying to make sense of it all? "Who We Are Now" is author Sam Roberts heroic attempt to do just that. In fact, Roberts, a veteran New York Times journalist wrote just such a book a decade ago based on the 1990 census. I did not read that one but I must warn you that I found getting through the sequel to be a bit tedious at times. There are simply too many statistics for the average reader to process. I often became confused and as a result I lost interest in the points the author was attempting to convey.
Having said that, the reader is still likely to come away from this book with a better understanding of who we are as a people and of the emerging trends in the country. You'll learn how the racial and ethnic composition of the nation is undergoing dramatic changes, where our citizens are moving to and from and what the consequences might be of our aging population. But at the end of the day I think I would prefer to read about such issues in books primarily devoted to those topics. And while I commend Sam Roberts for his attempt, in my judgement "Who We Are Now" is far more appropriate as a research volume for scholars than a book one would read from cover to cover.
