Book Description
This book describes the deep contradictions plague market economies. It shows how the influence of these contradictions sometimes subsides, allowing the economy to perform relatively well. But in time, these contradictions accumulate and economy declines as if it suffers from some degenerative disease. The policies designed to rise above these contradictions often spawn even more severe contradictions. This book describes how these contradictions have affected the economy of the United States in the past and the dangers that the future poses. For example, policies to stimulate the economy eventually lead to stagnation. Policies to make hold down wages make business even more uncompetitive. It also analyzes the destructive consequences of the military, finance, and the Federal Reserve. Finally, it debunks the mythological promise of a New Economy.

Book Description
With its advantages over conventional thermal processing such as more rapid heating and preservation of sensory and nutritional quality, microwave processing has proved a versatile technology. From an international team of contributors, The Microwave Processing of Foods reviews the wealth of recent research on how this technology affects particular foods and how it can be optimized for the food industry. Divided into three parts, the book begins by discussing the dielectric properties of particular foods and how microwave processing acts on and effects nutritional quality. Building on this foundation, Part 2 reviews a range of applications of microwave processing from baking and drying, to blanching, thawing, and tempering. It also looks at packaging issues with regard to temperature distribution, passive and active packaging options and future trends. The final part of the book covers the key area of process measurement to reduce variables and increase control to ensure consistent and uniform heating of food products. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, The Microwave Processing of Foods will be a standard reference for all those wishing to maximize the benefits of this important technology.

From the supplier: There are several factors that influence new developments in the packaging of microwaveable foods. Some food companies have developed microwaveable products with innovative packaging for non-frozen foods. There is also an increased interest in the use of susceptors or the metallizing of films in paperboard packages. Moreover, the growth of the home meal replacement market is contributing to the companies' efforts to develop creative packaging for refrigerated and prepared foods.

From the supplier: Kraft Foods Inc's Easy Mac was evaluated by a panel of seventh- and eighth-grade students for taste, ease of preparation and packaging. The students were unanimous in declaring that Easy Mac was easy to prepare. However, some of the students claimed that Kraft's product suffered from overpackaging. One of the students also commented that Easy Mac was not very appetizing in appearance, but tasted good as a snack. Two girls cited the need to prepare the noodles exactly as the package instructions directed or else, the noodles got soggy.

From the supplier: ATGTBT Inc has invented a microwave drying process that replaces baking or frying in potato chip production to produce a fat-free chip. Shelf-life is extended because there is no fat to go rancid. ATGTBT claims that its potato chip production line utilizes the world's largest microwave unit. Demand for the product has been high, and the company is expanding its production facilities, adding a second production line.

Journeying through a canyon can be an exhilarating experience--but it can be dangerous, too. Canyoneering is an introduction to this relatively new form of outdoor recreation that combines elements of hiking, backpacking, climbing, spelunking, and even swimming. The author is careful to point out that any of the skills discussed here can be further studied in more subject-specific texts; for instance, while there is a basic chapter on navigating in canyons, novices are encouraged to refer to in-depth guides about map and compass work--getting lost in a hot desert canyon with limited food and water can have rapid and tragic consequences. Initial chapters include some basics that will be familiar to anyone who is active in the outdoors (trip planning, equipment, navigation, weather, and first aid). Part 2 delves into the fun stuff--the skills you'll need to negotiate tricky terrain, from rappelling down waterfalls to crossing plunge pools with a heavy pack. Short, sometimes amusingly self-deprecating sidebars flesh out the instruction with real-life examples from the author's own expeditions.
Those with some canyon experience already under their belts will probably want to look elsewhere for more advanced and detailed material, but Canyoneering is an excellent primer for the beginner.
Book Description
Have you ever dreamed of hiking deep into canyons and gorges? Descending into slot canyons, rappelling into caverns, or swimming through plunge pools? Navigating canyon mazes, chockstones and logjams, or rushing streams in narrow gullies? Welcome to the next big outdoor sport.
Similar to caving and mountaineering, canyoneering combines a wide range of backcountry skills to explore the unique and often remote world of canyons. Skills discussed include rappelling and rock climbing, mountain biking, swimming, camping, weather reading, and route finding.
This comprehensive guide covers a broad range of information about the sport, plus all the technical aspects, from the basics-including travel between narrows, through pools, streams, and waterfalls, up rock or logjams, and across talus slopes-to advanced-bouldering, swimming, rappelling, ascending, canyon biking and paddling, and rock climbing.
Customer Reviews:
Not informative.......2006-11-05
Sadly, this book isn't very good. I wish it were better, because I don't know of a book that discusses "canyoneering" that is good. I think Rock Climbing by Craig Luebben and Mountaineering - The Freedom of the Hills, both by the same publisher, provide more information relevant to canyoneering than this book, even though they cover many other subjects in depth. There was only one page of information that was new to me, the topics on this page: one-rope rappelling and retrieving webbing. I wanted more but didn't get it from this book.
Bunk. Total Bunk........2000-10-06
I was curious to see what Mr. Van Tilburg would have to say about canyoneering. The answer was worse than I expected. He had nothing to say. He repeats a few tired cliches. He has a few flashy chapter titles. But the meat is missing. No tofu even.
Canyoneering is becoming more popular, and there is a great need for accurate information to aid people in keeping themselves safe and from getting lost. Many people are venturing out there with little or no specific knowledge about how the sport is done safely and with minimal impact. If you are looking for help with this, you'll have to wait for Rich Carlson's Canyoneering Technique Book, because you certainly won't get it from this embarrassing waste of wood pulp.
Good potential, disapointing content.......2000-06-28
Considering the fact that canyoneering is a (relatively) new sport, the potential of this book to corner the market could have been high. Instead, what Van Tilburg produced is more of a generalist's guide to being in the Soutwest, with not as much specific information on Canyoneering as I would have hoped. The first 3/4 of the book is divided into sections on first aid, navagation, clothing, gear, weather, ect. But all of these are fairly short chapters and cover each aspect lightly. The actual technical sections on canyoneering are exelent, and cover a lot of material that I've never seen in my 7+ years of rock climbing and 15+ of backpacking. But these chapters come late in the book and are much too short. What Van Tilburg should have done (and my advice to prospective canyoneers)is to get a copy of "Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills", "The NOLS Wilderness First Aid Book", and a good book on navigation. Read them and know them. Then focus on the aspects that are specific to canyoneering. Instead what was produced was a book that is full of information that, if you don't already know it, you have no buisness venturing into canyons in the first place.

Do You Really Know American English?
ASIN: 0764110284 |
Book Description
Written primarily for ESL and EFL students preparing to take language exams in English, this book presents 400 common phrasal verbs and the ways in which they are used in everyday American English. Phrasal verbs are word groups that include a verb combined with a preposition or an adverb. They are not used only as verbs but as nouns, such as comedown, breakup, or showoff. They might also be used as adjectives, such as spaced-out, burned-out, broken-down and many others. This volume places phrasal verbs within the context of sentences, and presents hundreds of examples and exercises.
Customer Reviews:
All the practice you can put up with.......2007-08-12
A throrough examination of this most English of constructions. Recommended for the learner of English as a second language who would like to make his English sound more like that of a native speaker by substituting such Latinate words as 'tolerate' with the more colloquial 'put up with.' Abundant examples and exercises.
Phrasal verbs in plain American English.......2007-03-23
Focus on about 450 well choosen phrasal verbs.
Escellent choice of typical sentences in which the phrasal verbs are used
Excellent recap exercises at the end of each chapter that force you to remind Phrasal verbs defined in previous chapters.
Some explanation for phrasal verb meaning not absolutely clear (just about 10 on 450)
Some mistakes in the solution part.
Very good choice for foreign learners.
Excelent ESL material.......2006-07-10
This is a book we use a lot with our students, it's pretty good, not too expensive and it is user friendly.
A comprehensive, easy-to-use workbook of phrasal verbs.......2005-12-31
An excellent workbook for learning phrasal verbs in English. Its format is easy to understand, and a number of exercises are provided in each unit to help students master the phrasal verbs they have learned in the unit. However, I have found quite a few mistakes/misprints in the answer section. Some are minor: verbs and particles are separated where they should be put together one after the other; others a bit more serious: a phrasal verb that is appropriate in meaning but not covered in the given unit is offered as an answer to the quiz, or simply wrong ones are provided. Otherwise, I would have given 5 stars. I hope that there aren't as many mistakes/misprints in the text itself, and that the publisher will correct them for the next edition.
The best, so far!.......2005-07-25
If you are serious about learning the English language as a non-native learner, you'll enjoy this book. It covers the subject thoroughly, with a more practical approach than others. I think this book is the best because you learn phrasal verbs in contest, as they are used everyday. An academic approach can be misleading, and useless, for the non-native learner. The approach is very user-friendly, and intuitive. Very good for intermediate and advanced learners.

Book Description
Alison Beach's book on female scribes in twelfth-century Bavaria is based on the belief that the scriptorium was vital to the intellectual revival of the Middle Ages and that women played a role in this renaissance. Beach's focus on manuscript production at three rather different religious houses, and the religious, intellectual, social and economic factors which influenced that production, enables her to draw wide-ranging conclusions of interest to palaeographers as well as others interested in religious and gender history.
