              Book Description

The great dinosaur bone beds of the American and Canadian West are world famous and have yielded spectacular fossil finds. But the eastern United States and maritime Canada, where dinosaurs also roamed in great numbers, have been equally important to the study of these extraordinary creatures. Some dinosaur fossils have come from the bog iron and clay pits of Maryland and New Jersey, while others have been discovered in the riverbanks of North and South Carolina. Dinosaur footprint sites have been found from central Virginia to the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia.

In Dinosaurs of the East Coast, David Weishampel and Luther Young restore East Coast dinosaurs to their rightful place on the paleontological map. They describe such dinosaurs as the plant-eating Astrodon johnstoni, which browsed in a tropical Maryland jungle 100 million years ago; Anchisaurus polyzelus, which lived in New England some 200 million years ago; Eubrontes, the first large therapod on the East Coast; Pekinosaurus olseni, a primitive ornithischian found in North Carolina; and Hadrosaurus foulkii, a duck-billed dinosaur that lived in New Jersey some 70 million years ago. In addition, they chronicle the long and colorful history of dinosaur fossil hunting along the Atlantic coast and profile the modern-day fossil hunters -- both professional paleontologists and amateur collecters -- who continue to make important discoveries today. Richly illustrated with more than one hundred photographs and drawings, Dinosaurs of the East Coast combines science and history to offer a new look at an always fascinating subject.

4 out of 5 stars A techie new to sails: good overview.......2005-08-15

I read this with a little background in fluid dynamics. It's very readable, convincing, authoritative, does not seem pedantic or too smart for an average interested reader like me. It covers a few sail types, and gives a good feel for their performance in general. For a good balance, a great picture of the late 1990's pre-oympic skiff (49er) need-for-speed formula-I dinghy design and sailing life is Frank Bethwaite's High Performace Sailing. It covers similar topics, is a little less academic, and emphasizes the experiments and stories that led up to the faster-than-the-wind skiffs. I liked both.

                    Book Description

This volume replaces Marchaj's classic Sailing Theory and Pactice, published 25 years ago, and offers new information on, rig design, sail construction and trim, wind-sail interaction, and the structure of the wind. The performance of any sailing craft depends largely on the power of the available sail--how the rig uses the wind and turns it into a useful driving force. But sail forces are determined by a multitude of factors, including wind speed, sail area and shape, and steadiness of the wind, among others. From wind-tunnel tests that he has conducted, Marchaj describes how these factors affect sail power and why certain rigs are superior in power and efficiency--concluding that the Bermuda, or marconi, rig is by no means the best available. This major work is an accessible, nonmathematical treatment of the subject and marks a turning point in modern thinking in the arena.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me trim my sails for best performance.......2002-05-19

I found this book a great help in sorting out the relative importance of sail fullness, trim angle, mainsheet tension, luff tension and vang tension. The result for me is faster sailing and better finishing positions.

Winning a sailboat race starts with proper sail trim. Marchaj describes in great detail sail aerodynamic throry with illustrative wind tunnel measurements and clear diagrams that allow me to understand the basic concepts. This understanding allows me to focus on the important aspects of sail trim during a race so I can continuously maximize my boat speed.

He explains how to use wool streamers to show what the flow is on the lee side of the sail. The use of wool streamers allows me to rapidly trim the sail to an optimum point.

5 out of 5 stars First-class overview of the physics of sailing.......2000-06-29

This is the first book of Marchaj's I have read, at the advice of the Amateur Yacht Research Society. It is an excellent survey of the physics of sail power, focusing primarily on sail issues. It is a fascinating read for any sailor who cares about the performance of their vessel or is curious about an explanation of sail physics beyond the five-minute airfoil explanation.

Do you make your own greeting cards and wish you could write beautifully instead of depending on rubber stamps for what you want to say? Would you like to hand letter a gorgeous sign, perhaps a poem and frame it but your third grade teacher was right when she said you had poor handwriting? Then this book is for you.
Mr Waddington carefully teaches many beautiful styles of calligraphy, the Caroline manuscript which most people are familiar with as well as my favorite, the italics, with quite a few other styles thrown in for good measure. You will learn the process step by step, from the materials you will need to the technique to keep from smearing the ink.
So buy this book and the next time you make a card with all your love and attention to detail, you won't have to settle for a greeting that doesn't suit what you want to say - you'll be able to beautifully express yourself in yor words as well as the appearance of your words.

4 out of 5 stars Crystal clear guidance for the listening business!.......1999-02-18

Mike Wing has written a terrific how-to-get- started manual for the small business owner/operator to the corporate executive! This large book in a small cover is a stimulant for the thinking manager or owner who believes in the value of serving and listening to her or his customers. True, the answers are not in Wing's book . . . but, if they were, this classy treatment of why and how to get to know your customer would be a heavy volume and many times the price. As the owner/manager of a market research firm that specializes in customer service research, I can tell you that this book is right on the mark! A must read for anyone who is serious about business and customer service!

                          1 out of 5 stars A complete disappointment.......1998-10-26

This book is a complete disappointment. I did not read one sentence that was intriguing. I think I could have learned more from reading basic research web-sites on the Internet. I could have written a better book after my first year in college. I would not recommend buying this book...it was a complete waste of my time and money.

                          1 out of 5 stars Not GOOD!.......1998-10-13

Please tell me something new! "Customers are important" is a cliche we all know. Needless to say, all this book essentially does is repeat the obvious and adds little to one's ability to effectively compete for clients. I was surprised as to the generic nature of the advice. To get customers, you cannot rely on a business consultant's slogans.

Yeap, "Customers are important". Try NOT to be a customer for this unimaginative, bland and mind-numbing product.

                            Book Description

This book aims to examine the effects of globalization and economic and political transformations in the 'emerging regions' of Latin America and the Caribbean, East Central Europe and the former Soviet Union and East Asia by looking at development trajectories and the pathways of both economic and political change. This is a unique approach in terms of books published in both geography and the social sciences.

                                  Book Description

Constructing Boundaries examines the competition, interaction, and impact among Jewish and Arab workers in the labor market of Mandatory Palestine. It is both a labor market study, based on the Split Labor Market Theory, and a case study of the labor market of Haifa, the center of economic development in Mandatory Palestine. Bernstein demonstrates the impact of the pervasive national conflict on the relations between the workers of the two nationalities and between their labor movements. She analyzes the attempts of Jewish workers to construct boundaries between themselves and the Arab workers, and also highlights cases of cooperation between Jewish and Arab workers and of joint class struggle.

                                    Book Description

The letters of William Jardine and James Matheson, co-founders of the Hong Kong Trading Firm Jardine, Matheson and Co., shed new light on the important commercial, economic and political developments of the nineteenth century. Local and world politics, debate about freedom, monopoly and free trade, the conduct of the Opium War and the beginnings of British rule in Hong Kong are passionately discussed alongside the immediate business concerns of tea, opium and British exports to China. The letters from the Jardine Matheson Archive, collected here for the first time, portray a fascinating commercial, political and personal drama played out in England, Scotland, India, and China. A substantial introduction provides the historical background of British involvement in Eastern trade from the eighteenth century up to the beginnings of British Rule in Hong Kong.

                                        Book Description

Jardine Matheson & Company is perhaps best known through James Clavell's Taipan. The firm played an important role in the founding of Hong Kong, but its growth in the 20th century, through acquisition and divestiture, has never been adequately explored until now. This is not only the first study of Jardine Matheson to systematically uncover the industrial logic of its growth strategy; it is also among the first studies of the Hong Kong trading industry as an adaptive "ecosystem" based on trade, equity, and debt relationships that reduced business risk. Understanding the experience of Jardine Matheson will prove valuable to anyone who is eager to learn the lessons of adaptation and survival that marked not only the first period of globalization, but its current incarnation as well.

                                        3 out of 5 stars A Business in Risk : Risky..............2004-11-01

As a book outlining concepts of business science this book is passable, but nothing more. The Jardine Matheson content is vast although some highly significant strategic moves, the investment in Trafalgar House and any analysis of the effect of the cross shareholding arrangement, are glaring omissions. As a business science book this was not good value, as a Jardines book the "Thistle and the Jade" totally outclasses Ms. Connell's efforts. Too much enthusiasm for the company comes over and as the book was not written with official sanction it is hard to understand why. The subject deserves a far more balanced critique than that given, better books on this subject exist!

                                        Book Description

Jardine Matheson & Co, founded in Canton on 1 July, 1832, has had a longer continuous existence than any other British, European or American business connected with the China trade. It is the only firm surviving from pre-Treaty days (before the Treaty of Nanking which opened China to foreign commerce in 1842) and it played a very important part in that process. The firm soon after moved to the newly ceded colony of Hong Kong, and ever since the firm has been associated with the island. `Jardines is Hong Kong' someone once asserted to Lord Blake - an exaggeration, of course, but pardonable. And although Hong Kong has reverted to Chinese sovereignty, Jardine Matheson is likely to remain a major feature of the place and may well play a renewed role in mainland China far into the twenty-first century.

Lord Blake traces the early beginnings of the firm, from William Jardine's first glimpse of Canton in 1802, through the rapid expansion and growth of the nineteenth century and into the next, leaving the story exactly half-way through the twentieth century, just as the Korean War breaks out.

The early history of the firm has always been regarded as the most interesting part of the story. It, or its background, has been the subject of two fascinating historical novels: the late James Clavell's bestselling blockbuster Tia-pan (1966) and Timothy Mo's aclaimed An Insular Possession (1986). The real story is equally exciting in the hands of one of the most distinguished historians of the twentieth century.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written history of The Princely Hong.......2004-01-24

Written by renowned historian Robert Blake, this commissioned history of Jardine Matheson presents a sweeping history of this primus inter pares among British hongs, whose 171-year existence helped revitalize an Empire, and irrevocably changed the face of Asia.

Jardine Matheson is a British company whose prodigious trading activities were responsible for helping maintain a delicate balance of trade for Great Britain during the nineteenth century. A unique tripartite trade arrangement, bullion for tea and tea for opium, emerged, and the story of how this came about is as interesting as the story of Jardines.

During the 1830s, Chinese tea was in great demand in Britain, which consumed about 30 million pounds per annum. Tariffs on tea imports contributed about three million pounds annually to the British treasury; therefore, tea commerce held great political and commercial significance. However, this happy state of affairs presented a conundrum. Because the Chinese would only accept specie metals, such as silver, in payment for what an observer called 'the deleterious produce of China', the ever-increasing importation of tea from China began to considerably--and negatively--affect Britain's trade balance with that kingdom. To the Chinese kingdom's detriment and regret, the traders learned through trial and error that Indian opium was the key to maintaining the lucrative tea trade with the Middle Kingdom.

Jardine Matheson did not devise this three-sided trade, but the firm was in the right place at the right time, and was thus poised to profit immeasurably from this sort of arbitrage. The China trade made Jardines immensely powerful--so powerful, in fact, that its lobbying efforts to exact an indemnity from the Chinese government, which tried to stop the opium trade, led to the First Opium War.

This book makes an enthralling addition to business historiography, and considerably illuminates the role of private firms in economic and colonial adventurism in the Far East during the nineteenth century. For further reading, I recommend "Merchants to Multinationals: British Trading Companies in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" if one wants to delve more into how the great British trading companies adapted to a changing economic landscape.
