A highly practical book.......2001-07-09

This book provides lots of practical suggestions on how to maintain the self-esteem of children who struggle with writing.I especially like the author's statement that "With sympathetic parenting and teaching,a child will survive slow handwriting development with few or no emotional scars." Suggestions on how to identify dysgraphia and provide accommodations for it are presented in this very easy to read handbook. As an occupational therapist, I found the information on the following to be the most helpful: personal traits and performance characteristics of dysgraphic students; writing samples; praising; and accomodations. This book would help those seeking practical ways to help their child or student. It does not go into depth about the different classifications of dysgraphia.

This is a small book packed with invaluable information! As a teacher and parent I found this book to be a wealth of information. In an easy to read and understand format I learned, as a parent, about dysgraphia, early warning signs, things to do at home and how to get help. As a teacher I learned to understand this LD from my student's perspective and I learned strategies to help him be successful in school! I highly recommend this book for parents who have a child with dsygraphia and for teachers who may have a student exhibiting symptoms of dysgraphia.

We recently received a diagnosis of Dysgraphia regarding our First Grader. Unfortunately there isn't alot written about Dysgraphia, but I was thrilled to read this book. Although we knew he had difficulty with writing, and the teachers also saw him struggling, this book helped put things in perspective. I had my son's teachers read the book (since it is a short easy book to read) and it made a world of difference in how they felt about the difficulty and how they are now helping him in their classroom. This book is well worth reading.

Don't waste your money!.......2000-01-24

You get 50 pages of overpriced info. Very little was of value. Chapter six was highly offensive to parents, and should either be removed or divided into two parts. The one given; From the School perspective, and part two; From a parents perspective. --- Had I looked at this book in a store I would not have spent my money on it. If I could get a refund, I'd return it in a heartbeat.

Where's the beef?.......1999-10-26

Desperate to learn more about the genesis of the condition that plagues my 7 year old boy, I was upset to find that apparently this answer does not exist. I found it terribly misleading to entitle the book "Why Johnny can't write." Unfortunately, in the thirty minutes that it took to read the book from cover to cover I didn't learn any insight into the condition or any new techniques on how to best deal with it. This book does a decent job at providing a rudimentary understanding on the issues related to dysgraphia. It would be better off entitled "Helpful hints when Johnny can't write".

A collection of article extracts on Development Economics.......2006-09-17

This is a book written for students and researchers working in the field of Development Economics. Virtually all areas of the field are covered and most of the most important articles that have been published on the development of the economy are in it. More advanced readers will however notice that some articles that should been in this book are missing. It is nevertheless an incredible help for all those who want to get a good oversight or a good reference in the latest research in Development Economics. The style is naturally very technical, however the authors are helping with comments and case study examples, which makes the understanding of the areas that they cover a lot more easy.

Five stars are awarded for this book, as it really is an excellent anthology for all those involved in the subject of Development Economics.

Good second step in development economics.......2003-03-20

This book is a very good introduction to development economics for those who have some background in economics. The book does assume some prior knowledge of concepts and terminology, as it seeks to address many of the main contemporary issues related to development. There is a definite bias of focus on Third World developing countries rather than transitional or developed countries.

The issues addressed include the more traditional ones (such as poverty reduction, trade policy, population issues, financing issues) coupled with some newer areas of debate (such as the specific role of women in development). Most interesting I found the section on industrial and technological progress, which follows from the classical eocnomics argument that there should be no indsutrial policy. As it is a compilation of arguments, it does not go terribly in depth in any of the subjects, but offers enough references for those who wish to do so.

For the introductory student of development, this is an essential compilation. For the more advanced student, this is great reference and the bibliography is a list of important works.

Wonderful collection of articles.......2002-05-21

I found this book extremely useful for understanding development economics. It provides a variety of different approaches and theories with clear explanations from the editors. A great source that I recommend strongly.

very useful introduction.......2000-12-11

I bought this book on the recommendation of a colleague who teaches development economics and uses the book himself. I am an economist by training, my background is on macroeconomics and international economic relations, and hence there was much that i recognized. One reason I wanted to learn more on development economics is that I am currently involved in work on EU Candidate Countries and economic transition issues. Although these countries are clearly not in the same category as less developed countries (although that phrase has become increasingly meaningless in itself as it covers so many very different countries), I think there could be fruitful cross-fertilization from reading a book on development economics. Certainly there would seem to be a number of issues where the candidate countries share some common ground at least, or where useful lessons could be learned from development economics (institution and capacity building and macroeconomic stabilization, for instance). The discussion on how development economics is different from other disciplines in economics (notably macro-economics) or adds value to it is of course as old as development economics itself. I found this book very useful as a broad and balanced introducion, and even though it sometimes covered familiar ground I think it often did so with a specific slant on LDCs that did add value for me, as did discussion of subjects not usually found in most economics books on social issues such as the role of women. I liked the listings of positive and negative arguments on a number of issues such as what has been achieved incpoverty reduction. I also liked the broad collection of seminal articles that you are unlikely to find elsewhere.

I found the articles and empirical research quoted not always of very recent date, and especially the latter bothered me. In several instances the texts quoted empirical findings from studies dating from the 70s or so. I do not find that very convincing; have there really been no more recent findings for the last 25 years? Also the lay-out of the text was not always very clear or attractive to the eye, and I think there is definite room for improvement there as well.

That said, this is still excellent value for money, and the book is certainly well worth to read for anybody interested in a good introduction on development economics.

excellent tool for any one interested in development.......2000-07-08

Meier's book provides an excellent tool for anyone interested in Development Economics. Most, if not all, of the important development theories and issues have been covered in a clear and concise way. Amongst the contributors, many are notable economists and scholars such as: Chenery, Stiglitz, Bardhan, Nurske, Sen, Lewis, Todaro, Krueger, Ranis, Rosenstein-Rodan, Hirschman- to name but a few. This book has truly been the most useful reference tool from my first year to final year as an undergraduate reading development economics. Particularly interesting and useful chapters include: Dualistic Development(Lewis Model etc.), Debt and Aid, Population, Trade Strategy, and an awesome section on Industrialisation and Technological Progress.

Best Book on U.S. Interventionism in Central America.......2004-09-18

This book analyzes the economic factors that influenced U.S. interventionism in Central American during the 1980s. Whereas most studies of this topic focus exclusively on "security" related considerations, this book adopts a political economy approach and argues that divisions between capital-intensive and labor intensive industries were major influences on U.S. intervention.

The book does an outstanding job of analyzing the various theoretical approaches on pertaining to this topic, and using these theories to explain events. There is also a wealth of new documentary and archival material.

Crass Economic Determinism.......2001-11-28

Ronald Cox's "Power and Profits" is the crassest type of economic determinism which no one subscribes to anymore. Cox argues that US policy to Central America is shaped only by business interests in the region. US national and security interests in repelling the Soviets in the Cold War are viewed by Cox as merely an excuse for intervention on the behalf of businesses. To explain why Republicans have been more willing to intervene he ascribes the difference not to ideology, but to different types of businesses: The Republicans were supported by labor-intensive businesses which needed many workers operating at low wages, while the Democrats were supported by capitol-intensive businesses which did not need to directly intervene militarily. Cox uses this pathetic theory to explain US policies in Central America, but it is inadequate on every level. Fortunately, authors like Cox are not taken seriously by academics anymore. This leads writers like him to declare the entire field biased, when in truth its just that his theory is really bad
