Great, practical overiew of creativity techniques.......2000-08-11
This book provides a clear, concise guide to creativity techniques. The introduction stresses the need for quantity to create quality when generating ideas. Each of the 50 techniques is outlined in a few pages with a clear focus on practical application. If you want a book with a lot of theory behind creativity this is not for you, but if you want to actually get started, this book can help (fast). The book covers both individual and group techniques and also categorises the techniques for either problem solving or idea generation. This book will prove very useful whether you are looking to improve your own creativity, or get the best out of others. Highly recommended.

Book Description
The circulation and interactions of major elements such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, oxygen, and hydrogen are critical for the maintenance of the earth's ecosystems. Human activities including agriculture, industry, and urbanization alter element interactions and contribute to major environmental problems ranging from climate change and depletion of the ozone layer to acidification of soils to the destruction of coral reefs.
Interactions of the Major Biogeochemical Cycles is a new scientific assessment of element interactions in the biosphere. It provides an up-to-date review of biogeochemistry and its effects on earth's systems, with leading experts in biogeochemical cycling in atmospheric, land, freshwater, and marine environments offering chapters that summarize and synthesize information in each discipline.
The book opens with chapters on cross-cutting issues that have significance in understanding global change effects and their potential management. These chapters address:
* trends in element interactions in response to global change
- the effects of natural disturbances
- new approaches and methods for advancing our understanding of element interactions
- the potential for managing element interactions to address major environmental issues

Veterinarians Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats : Safe and Effective Alternative Treatments and Healing Techniques from the Nations Top Holistic Veterinarians
ASIN: 0070501793 |
Amazon.com
The Illustrated Veterinary Guide is a brilliantly conceived and expertly rendered reference. In one succinct volume, Chris C. Pinney, D.V.M., covers just about everything you might need to know about owning and caring for dogs, cats, and countless other animals. He covers birds, rabbits, and guinea pigs; hamsters, rats, and chinchillas; prairie dogs, hedgehogs, ferrets, and miniature potbellied pigs--plus reptiles, amphibians, tropical fish, and invertebrates. Whether your menagerie is restricted to Fluffy and Fido, or extends to tarantulas, hermit crabs, newts, and snakes, Pinney provides chapters on restraint, housing, nutrition, reproduction, preventive health care, and the diseases and disorders relevant to each species.
The dog and cat sections are naturally the most thorough, forming more than half the book. Pinney discusses how to choose the right dog and how to housebreak, socialize, and train him, then delves into preventive health care (nail trimming, weight control, and staving off parasites), elective surgeries (tail docking and ear trimming), and breeding your dog (from puberty and birthing to the care of neonatal puppies). Next come the infectious diseases (such as distemper, paravirus, kennel cough, and ringworm) and the parasitic diseases (such as scabies, tapeworm, and demodectic mange). Pinney's veterinary guide launches into all the internal systems (cardiovascular and respiratory, immune and digestive, urinary and reproductive, musculoskeletal, nervous, and endocrine) plus the doggy anatomy of skin and coat (integumentary system), eyes, and ears. Pinney explains the workings of each system, and the diseases that afflict them. There are few symptom charts, so you can't look up "vomiting" and see the associated diseases, though you can check the chapter on first aid for a quick guide to possible causes and seriousness. You can also identify the digestive system as the likely location, read about all the conditions and symptoms, and decide if tonsillitis, intestinal obstruction, or intussusception seems most likely.
The information provided by Pinney is all sound veterinary data, and the appendix on first aid for dogs and cats is excellent. But don't underestimate the value of the illustrations. An illustration of ringworm on a cat face is worth a thousand words when it comes to assessing if that's what your cat has, and mimicking the drawing of how to hold a pet snake is worlds easier than trying to apply written instructions to a restive boa. Some illustrations, such as the one of a cat in a thicket to illustrate feline nocturnal predatory habits, provide more eye candy than useful data. But there's no replacement for a picture of where to cut a bird's talon, how to restrain a lizard, or what a dog with impacted anal sacs looks like when it's scooting. If you like animals and want all your veterinary info in one place, Pinney's guide is a great one-volume resource. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......1999-02-23
This book is great for veterinary students as well as anyone with animals. Very informative and easy to understand. First Aid section in back! I loved this book, it even told me the right way to hold my parakeet.
Indispensable aid for caretakers and owners of small animals.......1997-11-05
This indispensable aid for caretakers and owners of small animals is a miniature encyclopedia chock full of facts, advice, and instruction on the care and feeding of dogs, cats, birds, and other pets. With chapters on everything from proper housing and daily nurturing of your pets, to emergency medicine and disease symptoms, this book has a section for just about everything you may encounter in pet ownership and animal care. The book even covers pets that many folks won't take to a vet -- rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, and reptiles. If you learn even one thing from the book that avoids a costly veterinary visit, the book has already paid for itself. This guide is especially helpful for people with more than one type of animal -- for instance, I have cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and rats. Instead of shelling out mega-bucks for 5 separate books, I was able to locate all the information I need in a single book. While most pet owners won't read the entire book at the time of purchase, that's one way to approach the wealth of information it offers. On the other hand, it's a terrific manual to have on hand, just in case, for the times when you'll need it. Much like a home first aid kit, this is a tool all pet owners should have in their homes.

Better than most.......2007-03-20
Yang Jwing Ming has been publishing high quality martial arts books and videos for more than twenty years now, and this early volume, definitely fits into that category as well.
It gives a great overview of chang quan, long fist, and as usual with Yangs books, the explanations are clear, concise and satisfying. The pictures are all clear and easy to interpret.
I don't think that one can learn martial arts from books, but they can be a good help. Especially when it comes to the understanding of philosophy, history and indeed technique.
Highly recommended
A Literal Bible on Shaolin Long Fist.......2007-03-07
This book is so incredibly detailed, and so amazingly well written that I would consider moving to Boston to train under this great man myself. The only book I have EVER found in my life that is so powerfully efficient. Don't skip this up, this is not the average marketing product. He has considered every aspect that the reader could possibly need to know to learn the first few forms in this art.
pretty good for a book.......2005-06-22
This book is certainly an interesting read, and provides very good information about the history of chinese martial arts. It does a beautiful job of describing various useful excersises that are great for any martial artist.
On the other hand, it is important that the reader realizes the need for a flesh and blood instructor when learning Kung Fu. When it comes to the Shaolin Long Fist form itself, the book serves as a wonderful source for reference and a helpful tool but only when used to augment the teachings of a real Shi Fu.
Captures the spirit of Kung Fu.......2005-03-13
Dr. Yang, to me, has always been a great source of information on the Chinese arts, and his expertise is displayed here. The book starts out with a pretty thorough history on the Chinese arts (considering the book was only supposed to highlight one style), as well as explaining different traditions found in kung-fu's philosophy and training. The big point Dr. Yang tries to get across is that morality comes first, then technique. Starting with Chapter Two, he begins to cover the physical aspect of Wu Su (meaning "martial arts", as "kung fu" translates directly as "work-time"), starting with warmups and stretches that are benificial for any athelete; I do at least some of these before every workout myself. He then explains the various stances (mostly kept low, for power) and different movements that can be done from them. While I'm sure that all of these stances and methods of movement are authentically Long Fist, I must question the effectiveness of some of them when facing a criminal in the street or a competitor in a cage. Many of the defensive movements require one to jump, which may not be a realistic option, depending on the environment. Still, the book's title is "Shaoling Long Fist", not "Street Defense and Cagefighting"; I'll go on the premise that the techniques don't HAVE to be effective, just authentic. Dr. Yang does mention in this section that Wu Su's emphasis is on defense, with the idea that once one learns to defend oneself, attacking should be that much easier. He then moves on to the different hand formations, usually just several variations of fists, claws, and "beaks", and then covers the basic theories and techniques of defensive hand movements. Then it's on to striking. The striking techniques presented here are shown primarily against a heavy bag, and are given a fair bit of detail. The variety presented leads me to believe that there's at least one technique for a given situation. After that is a seemingly misplaced chapter on building power, speed, and stability, with the emphasis on strengthening the arms/wrist and creating a stable base in the legs; no weights are used. Next is a brief section on different pressure points to target. On the plus side, the points are given with their Chinese name, their English location, the accupuncture meridian involved, and which attacks are most useful against it; on the negative side, the "effect" of these points tends to rely more on accupuncture theory than proven cases (example: the bottom of the foot is listed as a "death" point). Next is a brief introduction to forms (one of the better ones I've read) before Dr. Yang actually begins to demostrate five preset sequences and their applications. While he DOES state which direction one is supposed to be facing in each of his photos, the photos themselves have no real reference point, which takes away somewhat. However, I *am* grateful that he at least has decided to include the form's applications. The book ends with a section on "fighting forms", two-man drills used to train specific techniques (a plus) and strategies for free fighting, emphasising the Chinese mentality approach to combat. In conclusion, this book is very good for those who's emphasis is on form and "martial spirit", especially in the Chinese arts, and while it's not so great for MMA or self-defense, some of the principles and most of the training sequences can certainly help. For the subject matter, and in-depth introduction into a traditional Chinese art, it's a very good book.
Not what it's cracked up to be.......2002-08-05
I've always been a fan of kung fu and have always found it to be an effective fighting art. But some of the stuff in this book is quite questionable. The pictures are practically useless as all that is shown are flicky kicks that could never harm a tough opponent and useless punches that prolly woldn't have great efeect, that is, even if they hit. The stances shown are laughable. How easy it is to get taken down in one of those stances is ludicrous and the power behind your stances will leave something to be desired. Every stance that is built for speed lacks power and every stance built for power lacks speed. You'll find some useful information in the book and some interesting background, but if it's realistic training you want, I suggest you look elsewhere.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, better than most.......2007-01-19
I like the book and the layout. It's simple and has space for store numbers, addresses, book club stuff if you're into that and lots of space, alphabetically, for books. Really my only complaint is that there isn't more room for notes for each book. You can fit lots of titles but are better off keeping only brief notes or questions in the journal and longer notes perhaps tucked inside on a separate sheet of paper... of course that means you're taking notes and if not then it's a great solution! Again, good format, clean, simple appearance. I like it much better than most I've seen because it is more than just a lined journal. It's nicely organized and intuitive.
Book Journal.......2006-08-03
Great way to record what's happening in your book world.
Recommend to all serious readers.
Very practical.......2002-05-19
I had been searching for a book organizer for some time, withoug much success.
I am quite happy with my find on Amazon. This BookNotes is practical, efficient and lightweight. I mention the weight issue because I intended to carry this book with me everywhere and did not, therefore, want it to be a burden.
The sections are: Tracking system for books loaned (could have done without this), Book Notes (to me the most valuable part of this book - they could have added a few more pages to this section), Notes to Myself (always helpful)and numbers of note.
Nice clear printing (large letters) and wonderful quotations on books can be found throughout.
Excellent purchase.
A great way to record titles by genre.......2001-11-14
What I like about this book (the best, in my view of the three titles I bought recently) is that it allows me both to keep a list of books I want to read by author (I love particular authors) and by subject. What is more is that the books can be entered alphabetically by author - a book to those of thus who remember the author better than the title.
On the minus side, there is that pesky section on reading groups that I really don't need. And I could wish that this title came in a spiral version which would make it easier to lay flat, or that there was a way to index all the titles I read at the back of the book (at present I would be limited to indexing the books by author) either by title or by the order in which I read them. I am rating this a 4.5 simply because of some minor inconveniences.
On the other hand, it is nicely presented (even if a paperback) and it is the most suitable for a young reader. A children's version of this would be great (with illustrations picked from children's classics, or more color to the illustration, and slightly larger print).
To be honest, my ideal reader's diary would be a bit more like a Day-Planner, which would allow me to stuff up the diary in the two or three sections that I use most. But for my purposes, this BookNotes is the best value and the most satisfactory.
Very useful.......1999-11-29
I've only had a chanced to browse this "book" and it seems to be one that can be very valuable over the years as another reviewer notes. I'm ordering mine today! Go to your local bookstore and check it out. It will make a lot more sense then. But...buy it here otherwise these folks will not post this review.

Book Description
Chinese calligraphy has traditionally been an emblem of the ruling class and its authority. After a century of mass revolution, what is the fate of this elite art? Richard Kraus explores the relationship beween politics and the art of writing in China today to explicate the complex relationship between tradition and modernity in Chinese culture. His study draws upon a wide range of sources, from political documents, memoirs, and interviews with Chinese intellectuals to art exhibitions and television melodramas.
Mao Zedong and other Communist leaders gave calligraphy a revolutionary role, believing that their beloved art reflected the luster of authoritative words and deeds. Calligraphy was joined with new propagandistic mass media to become less a private art and more a public performance. It provided politically engaged citizens with subtle cues to changing power relationships in the People's Republic.
Claiming neither that the Communists obliterated traditional culture nor that revolution failed to relieve the burden of China's past, this study subtly examines the changing uses of tradition in a modernizing society.
Customer Reviews:
Love this book.......1999-12-14
This is a great book -- smart and funny. It's a very interesting analysis of how art and calligraphy are used to express leadership and exert power in Chinese culture. It may seem irrelevant to Westerners, but ask anyone from a calligraphic tradition about it, and they'll tell you how important it is. A great read with super pictures.

Book Description
This book presents the point of view that corporations with a hybrid structure in both their physical form and their marketing efforts have the highest probability of achieving profitability and longevity. Hybrid refers to a synergistic combination of e-commerce, a physical presence, and/or print (such as catalogs). Hybrid marketing strategies include the convergence of new media and old media marketing techniques.
In the next stage of the Internet economy, hybrid corporations will be the most likely businesses to be left standing. Hybrid corporations will achieve a profit, maintain a steady pattern of increasing sales, acquire capital for growth, and successfully expand through mergers and acquisitions at a rate faster than the most complex Web-only businesses.
How do they do it? What makes the new leaders so successful? That's what this new book is about. It will be based on data gathered from major corporations and cutting-edge small to midsize companies across a wide range of industries. Because the topic is cutting-edge, and subsequently in great demand, the data is evolving as the book is being written. The Hybrid Corporation analyzes successful techniques and offers a definition for success strategies,

Book Description
Starting in the late 1970s and gathering pace in the 1980s, the gaps between rich and poor in the United Kingdom have widened. This book contains results from a major research program that investigated the varied factors that led to this major social and economic change. Aspects covered include the changing shape of the income distributions as a whole, the rising earnings differentials between high paid and low paid, the changing contribution of women's earnings to family incomes, spatial polarization between rich and poor neighborhoods, and the links between income and wealth distributions.
Book Description
This book examines the need for cooperation between Europe and Asia, particularly in view of China's accession to the WTO. It looks at the cultural implications for closer cooperation between the two parts of the world, exploring corporate culture and leadership in integration management through mergers and acquisitions. It then goes onto discuss whether the world is big enough for several cultures or whether further integration will result in homogenization.

Book Description
International Politics: A Journal of Transnational Issues and Global Problems (a Kluwer scholarly quarterly) has, since 1997, published an extraordinary array of path-breaking analyses about the world's political metamorphosis. Featuring scholarship that transcends boundaries of states and disciplines, International Politics editors and contributors have joined to assemble, from the journal's last few volumes, a far-reaching portrait of new actors, identities, norms, and institutions that populate a stage once confined to states, power, and national interests. Further, interventions to build states, make or keep the peace, impose sanctions or save currencies are examined, as are the institutional enlargements at the forefront of policy in Europe. Global Society in Transition offers a wealth of policy-relevant scholarship about a world-in-making -- not yet detached from Cold War or even Westphalian roots, but certainly in process towards a qualitatively different global system. All published after rigorous peer review, chapters in Global Society in Transition will provide comparative politics, international relations, and world affairs courses at undergraduate and graduate level with instant access to the best of new research and innovative thinking in these fields.
