The Wealth of Ideas traces the history of economic thought, from its prehistory (the Bible, Classical antiquity) to the present day. In this eloquently written, scientifically rigorous and well documented book, chapters on William Petty, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Marx, William Stanley Jevons, Carl Menger, Léon Walras, Alfred Marshall, John Maynard Keynes, Joseph Schumpeter and Piero Sraffa alternate with chapters on other important figures and on debates of the period. Economic thought is seen as developing between two opposite poles: a subjective one, based on the ideas of scarcity and utility, and an objective one based on the notions of physical costs and surplus. Professor Roncaglia focuses on the different views of the economy and society and on their evolution over time and critically evaluates the foundations of the scarcity-utility approach in comparison with the Classical/Keynesian approach.

Simply the better book in history of the economic thought. Advised to anyone it wants to know the evolution of the neoclassic thought and the sraffian critic. Warning: the approach is heterodox.

This book is an edited collection of papers by leading experts on the population genetics and evolutionary biology of malaria, a disease which results in three million deaths each year in the world. "Malaria Hypothesis" refers to the hypothesis, which was proposed by J.B.S. Haldane at the 8th International Congress of Genetics in Stockholm in 1948, that the identical geographic distribution of both falciparum malaria and thalassemia in the mediterranean region suggests that the heterozygous individuals for thalassemia (or microcythemia as it was called then) might have greater resistance to malarial infection. Haldane, later in the same year, expanded his theory to infectious disease in general at another international conference, at Pallanza in Italy. Haldane's hypothesis was subsequently confirmed in the African populations by A.C. Allison and later by others during the last fifty years, although at first for sickle cell anemia and later for thalassemia with varying degrees of success. The malaria hypothesis still remains today a unique example of that kind of balanced polymorphism, not only in genetics but in all of biology. It opened up new insights into our perspective of the genetics and population dynamics of disease prevalence, particularly infectious disease.

Easy to read.......2007-08-16

This book provides information in a summary format... to the point info on sail trim. It is madeup of a number of articles written by experienced sailers with their own beliefs in what is important and what works best. Where else can you get a room full of experts quickly explaining the key to proper sail trim under many different situations?
Good book, but for those with sailing knowledge and experience. Not for the beginner.

Winds of Confusion.......2005-03-09

This was one of the first books I read about sail trim and I nearly gave up the sport on the spot. Conglomerating clippings from the magazine produced a very uneven book, sometimes conflicting, and frequently pitched to people of widely different experience. One chapter would assume years on the water while the next was aimed at newbies. Avoid this. Of the half dozen books on the subject I've read since, North U's sail trim book was easily the best. I'd suggest buying that instead. (And I'm still sailing.)

Each of the chapters are written by separate authors... some better than others. Overall there are some very good chapters on sail trimming.

A good book to read. Has some nice, concise articles on a variety of topics. I found it useful.

Florida is not so beautiful if you're abused and bilked. Get the real truth about the fraud and abuse of the elderly and not so elderly and read "Retirement Nightmare" by Diane Armstrong. To avoid a guardianship in the State of Florida, and other states, should be of paramount importance. Find out how to protect yourself and your loved ones with alternatives: health care surrogate, durable power of attorney, mediation and more. Consider that if you leave your parents to fend for themselves, and ignore the deterioration associated with aging, a guardian can gain a guardianship over them and their assets, without informing you. That guardianship will nullify the most meticulous of plans. To really cover your aging parents, make sure they create a "Pre-need" guardianship and name someone they trust, this is the only way predators in the retirement homes will not be able to force guardianship on them. Also create an irrevocable trust.

I bought this book, spent many many hours reading it, loaned it out,they loaned it out,now I think the whole town has read it. I'm buying my second copy. I took it to florida with me, and it's for the most part it's right on the money. I hope there is next addition coming out also.

This book is useless. The information is nothing but a compilation of general information available from web sites etc.
There is no information one would need to find a good place to live. Books like this one are a summary of general, useless data easily compiled and sold as information. It is a shame this type of publication is offered for sale.

Highly biased & out of date.......2003-03-09

My husband and I needed to relocate to a mild climate for health reasons. Bought this book and others and decided to look at Florida. We drove the entire state, investigating dozens of communities based upon features listed in this book. Sadly, the book is very outdated --- probably a given since FL is growing so fast. And the biases of the authors towards golfing and upscale shopping made their ratings of the various communities highly biased. What they liked, we hated. After months of personal investigation, we'll be settling in a community that's not on their favorites list. To each his own. The book might be more helpful if it was updated every year. As it is, the statistics are meaningless and misleading.

Florida On My Mind.......2003-01-09

Having read many a relocation guide, I can honestly rate this as one of the best I've encountered. It gives an insider's view of each of the Florida locations reviewed and provides the reader with pros and cons and overall relativity much needed in the process of deciding on, or at least ruling out, potential relocation destinations. There's a definite sense of "he said, she said" , a give and take, a yin and yang to this guide and when reading between the lines, one can look for a meeting or diverging of the minds involved to make ones own decision as to where to live. I highly recommend "Where to Retire in Florida" to those who, like me, are seriously considering a move (retiring or otherwise) to Florida.

The ethics of the global economy.......2000-01-12

Finn's book is an excellent attempt to bring together sophisticated Christian ethics with solid economic analysis. The book is well written, and not beyond the comprehension of undergraduate students. I have had great success teaching it at the junior and senior college level. What I appreciate about it most is its effort to be clear-eyed, pragmatic, and non-ideological in its moral assessment of trade. I also agree strongly with Finn's idea that Christian ethics and economic analysis should inform each other. Too often economists ask for ethical advice from theologians, and when they get it, complain that it is not well informed on economics. Economists really believe that there is only one way things can turn out, so the ethical perspective really is irrelevant. Finn doesn't do that. The one problem with the book is that he doesn't let the ethics inform the economics enough. For instance, in the chapter on agriculture, he claims that an increase in agricultural imports from LDCs will benefit the poor in the LDCs. When you look at the ownership of LDC agricultural resources, and the organization of LDC agricultural labor markets, I'm not so sure that's true. Similarly, I don't think the author works hard enough to explain the decline in wages in the US between the 70s and the 90s, and show why it is mostly not related to trade. But most of the time, the economics is right on. I appreciate this book very much, and I wish there were more like it.
