Liebler masterfully introduces the science of proteomics by spelling out the basics of how one analyzes proteins and proteomes, and just how these approaches are then employed to investigate their roles in living systems. He explains the key concepts of proteomics, how the analytical instrumentation works, what data mining and other software tools do, and how these tools can be integrated to study proteomes. Also discussed are how protein and peptide separation techniques are applied in proteomics, how mass spectrometry is used to identify proteins, and how data analysis software enables protein identification and the mapping of modifications. In addition, there are proteomic approaches for analyzing differential protein expression, characterizing proteomic diversity, and dissecting protein-protein interactions and networks.

Very readable introduction to Proteomics.......2004-02-01

This very readable book provides an excellent overview of proteomics. It gives a survey of techniques, comparing them and explaining why and when they are used. This is not the place to learn any method in detail. But it is the only book I have seen that you can read cover to cover in a few days and get the big picture of the field. Some caveats: each chapter has only 3 or 4 references, and the book focuses on methods connected to mass spectrometry. But if you want a quick and pleasant introduction to methods for purifying and identifying proteins, including discussions of ICAT, protein complexes and post-translation modifications, I highly recommend this book.

Good information, poor organization.......2003-11-04

There really are lots of good facts in this book. Somehow, though, they never come together to form a coherent whole.

Most chapters read like essays, meant to stand on their own. That means that many chapters repeat introductory material already covered, and remake points already made. Yes, I appreciate that silver staining does not properly represent the whole range of protein expression levels. I do not appreciate the need to stat that three or four times.

Despite its "Introduction" title, the author seems to forget what a novice will need to learn. For example, there's a discussion of isoelectric focussing for protein separation. That includes mention of the technique's history, and why it used to have reproducibility problems. I never did see an exact description of what the techique actually is or how it works, though. Likewise, the author describes a number of important software packages used in proteomics. There are no screen shots, though, comparisons of capabilities, details of usage, or even references for letting me find out more on my own.

When I got to the the end of this book, I wanted to go back and review a few points. Because of the generally poor organization, it was always a struggle to figure out just which discussion covered the topics I wanted.

Other books cover almost all of this title's content, and do so more clearly. I suggest that the interested reader keep on looking.

Maine Visual Cruising Guide: a MUST for all Maine cruisers.......2006-11-04

This outstanding book provides substantial assistance for trip planning and cruising the coast of Maine.
Having cruised Maine's beautiful coast for several decades, planning for my next cruise this summer has already been made easier by having this fine book. Of course, one must do the usual "paper chart navigation" planning before hand, but the additional help of this book is invaluable.
This book has a permanent place both shoreside and onboard while cruising.
It also makes a fabulous gift for my like-minded cruising friends.

Visual Guide to the Maine Coast.......2006-08-29

An excellent publication and valuable reference manual for any 'cruiser' transiting the waters of Maine. The photos taken by Jim Bildner provide a very welcome aspect of unfamilar destinations.

I recall chartering in the British Virgin Islands over 20 years ago and being handed a spiral-bound book that showed all the anchorages viewed from a couple hundred feet above the water, looking in. Wouldn't it be great if there were something like that for the far-trickier Maine coast? Well, now there is, and it's extremely well done.

Most two-page spreads in the book comprise an excellent harbor photo, the related section from the current NOAA chart, and a description of the harbor area. Superimposed on the chart is an arrow indicating the location from and direction in which the photo was shot. Some charts also include additional arrows that are overlayed on the photo as well so that you can see, for example, how the safest route for entry as seen on the chart actually looks on the water. That is really nice.

By my rough count, there are 110 harbors covered, from Isles of Shoals (OK, they're not quite in Maine) to Buck's Harbor on the west shore of Machias Bay. Unfortunately, anchorages around Eastport have been omitted. Maybe Mr. Bildner can get to them in a future edition.

Everyone cruising the Maine coast will want to have this supurb visual guide aboard to supplement the three standard guides. I only hope that the availability of this fine work won't bring TOO many folks and boats "from away" up to crowd our beautiful coast.

Writing and Being: Embracing Your Life Through Creative Journaling.......2007-08-10

Like many people, my experiences in English class were uninspired and downright dreary. The teacher told us to write about our summer vacation so painstakingly we all wrote some sort of drivel, as short and quickly as possible. Inevitably, that work came back with red marks all over it. I really wish I would have had G. Lynn Nelson as a teacher.

G. Lynn Nelson started out his career just like every other English teacher, ready with that red pen in his hand. Then, he had an epiphany which changed his teaching style and the lives of many of his students. Creative writing became his weapon against lack of creativity and the hatred of writing.

Writing and Being is an excellent guide to the beginnings of creative write either for person journal writing or for pieces that will eventually be seen by the public. This book would make an excellent text for a high school creative writing course but could easily be tailored to suit younger students or even adults wishing to reconnect with themselves. Personally, writing in my journal is an automatic part of my day, like brushing my teeth or checking my email. It keeps me centered and allows me to look to the heart of the issues that I face each day.

The best writing exercises ever!.......2004-10-09

This is a gem of a book. I've read through the entire book, and have worked my way through about half of the exercises, and the author has the most tremendous, deep writing experiences that I've ever seen. But not for the faint of heart, because the journal writing prompts he gives are truly deep. They may take you to interior places that you haven't visited in a while.

I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to other business owners. While the examples are from everyday life they point out how much a good or bad experience can mold your impressions of any company with whom you interact. Teresa goes on from there to point out common mistakes made by employees that put your company's reputation (and business) in danger. The book provides a non-threatening way for me to talk to my staff about how we can improve our service in every department.

Humorous and enthusiastic - a very entertaining and enlightening read. I especially like the everyday anecdotes that bring the point home about how often you only have one chance to make an impression on a customer or, even more importantly, potential customer.
