    Book Description

Assembling the leading thinkers and practitioners in the field of economic development, Theories of Local Economic Development places state-of-the-art theoretical positions on such important issues as inner-city development, rural development, technological innovation, and rebuilding economic infrastructure. To accomplish this task, the contributors skillfully incorporate illustrative case material. Chapters draw on the disciplines of economics, geography, regional science, urban planning, sociology, political science, and public administration. The pivotal assumption behind this book is that research should and can lead to general statements about economic development. As a result, scholars of economics and public finance, public administration, political science, urban studies, policy studies, and development studies will appreciate this invaluable resource. "Bingham and Mier have compiled an interesting study of local economic development in the United States by bringing together a series of papers that review aspects of economic growth from across a range of methodological perspectives. . . . The study is to be recommended to anyone wishing to gain a general understanding of current theoretical debate in the United States to economic development and may provide readers with some useful ideas on possible methodological approaches to understanding economic development in Britain." --Local Government Studies "The individual contributions are generally sound, well-written reviews of the various theories relating to their particular subject areas . . . The study is designed to have a common theme of reviewing problems and succeeds in its aim by providing a far more consistent study than many other collections of papers. The study is, therefore, to be recommended to anyone wishing to gain a general understanding of current theoretical debate in the United States and may provide readers with some useful ideas on possible methodological approaches to understanding economic development in Britain." --Local Government Studies

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Perspective on the Swing.......2007-05-06

Wolford's strength in this book does not lie in the standard "fundamentals" in the first several chapters. Arguably, none are really fundamentals - stance, grip, etc - because if they were, then EVERYONE would have to adhere to them. And if you see tour players, they vary from weak to strong grips, narrow to wide stances, short to long swings etc. The meat of this book, and it is very very good, is his ability to change your perspective in how to move the club, so that the new perspective will move the club along the correct path. 98% of amateurs have an incorrect perspective in how to move the club and body, so that the result is that they come over the top and never have a chance to feel what a real golf shot is like.

If you are an amateur, regardless of handicap, and you want to eliminate the over the top move which causes slices, pulls etc, then this book is for you. I am not aware of another book, possibly outside of David Lee's, that describes why most people are over the top, and how to undo that. Hogan's book will exacerbate that issue with every golfer who didnt start out as a hooker, Leadbetter's books never really describe how to make the move down, and Hardy's books I think are a passing fad, and will promote more over the top moves than any book out there.

If you want to eliminate the over the top move, then this is the only book out there that shows you the new perspective to do it.

4 out of 5 stars Good simplified approach.......2007-03-20

Well...its really more than two moves. There's the matter of what goes on between the two moves, but the book does help with that also.
Its written in a way that lets you sense the "feeling" you should be
searching for in different stages of setup and the swing, not to mention helpful hints on the mental approach to the game.
Personally, a few elements of this book have helped me tremendously and i've been assiduously working on my swing for years.
I have to think anyone who is still searching for a sound, repeatable
swing could profit from reading this book.
One negative: I'm sold on the idea that there are different appropriate fundamentals for the basic one plane versus two plane swing.
This is not addressed in this book.

5 out of 5 stars An undiscovered classic!.......2006-09-08

I have a collection of golf books that would rival any large cities library, and I have read everything I could get my hands on about the golf swing- and I have to say this is the best swing instructional book I have seen. Dudley's writing is clear and easy to follow, the diagrams are simple, straightforward, and the results are longer higher drives and irons. This book can be the only book you need to use for instruction- it has ball flight laws, short game instruction, putting instruction, mental management, and the author anecdotes put in for emphasis on key points. I don't write reviews often, or give 5 star rating lightly- this book deserves classic status for its clarity and its ability to deliver results. Highest Rating.

4 out of 5 stars It worked for me!.......2003-10-07

At first I was dissapointed that the book really wasn't about just two moves, but a comprehensive look at the entire golf swing - grip, posture, ball position - the whole deal. I enjoy reading about the golf swing and I've read a lot, but this book is one of the best. There are no magic moves and nothing that I really hadn't read before, but Wolford puts it all together in a way that makes all of those thousands of tips make sense! I've got my legs working as they should (I've added distance to my drives), proper weight shift, timing, etc. If I do make a bad swing on the course, I easily recognize and correct my error on my next swing. The game has gotten a lot easier! The diagrams are not great, but they get the job done. Thank you Dudley Wolford!

5 out of 5 stars Number 1 golf instruction book of all time!.......2002-08-28

If you read this book from the 1970's you will understand how Tiger Woods, David Duval, Davis Love, Phil Mickelson and others swing with such power and control. In the introduction Dean Beman calls Carl Lohren's book, the cornerstone to golf instruction for the foreseeable future. Well 30 years later it is still the best written, most accurate and univerally applicable writing on the gof swing and how to create a sound, repeatable and dependable move.

This book should be re-released. It has so much value to golfers of all skill levels.

5 out of 5 stars Worth any Price! It should be re-released.......1999-07-14

Ideally this book would be released again. It is the best golf instruction book ever written. This was the top selling golf instruction book worldwide when it was released in the 1970's.

My wish for the golfing world is for this book to be released agsin so that many can enjoy the game of golf.

                    Book Description

The perfect guide to speaking real Japanese

Beyond Polite Japanese offers more than 500 words and phrases for those who want to take a step beyond Japanese textbooks and speak like a native without spending decades in the country. Many of the entries cover traditional slang, while other entries take up more contemporary usage. Slang-forming
prefixes and suffixes are also presented, as well as phrases that are commonly slurred, proving elusive to the foreign ear. Literal meanings, notes on usage, and etymology are included for greater understanding.

Outgrowing polite Japanese is not easy, but with the help of Beyond Polite Japanese, it can be attained. The helpful guide is also a welcome break from the standard fare found in Japanese textbooks.

5 out of 5 stars A good reference, but not everything.......2005-10-03

I have to agree with "Another opinion". It is a good starting point for those who want to get in touch with Japanese slang, although it is not actual. As said in the preface, slang is something that flows and changes with time. Even in your own mothertongue, you will find that slang changes from time to time, and therefore it is hard to write a good reference book on slang.

I have read this book for 3/4th part, and skimmed through it a bit a few times. I have used some expressions in my daily conversations with my Japanese friends too, and sometimes they got surprised, sometimes they laughed a bit and told me that it was outdated, but it was still funny.

I also have to mention that this book is meant for the advanced students of Japanese, because the translations do not literally agree with what was given in Japanese. You'll have to understand Japanese to be able to decipher the sentence structure and then agree with the translation given (or not :) ) And then, only then, you'll be able to create your own examples!

As a sidenote, if you really want to learn slang, talk to Japanese people, a LOT! That really helps ;)

This book is indeed funner than hell and even if you don't know a hint of japanese you can also find this book enjoyable. An important note is that some of the expressions that are used in this book are outdated or some region of Japanese people might not know what you're saying. In general Japanese people themselves are more open in their language you just got to crack their social sheel so they speak in more of a plain level. Excellent book!

I would like to respond to the review entitled "Not the Best." First, the reviewer says the book is not comprehensive. Well, I have looked around quite a bit, and I have yet to find a comprehensive dictionary of slang and colloquialisms even in the Japanese language, so it is a bit much to expect this book to be that dictionary; and then there is the question of whether this book was INTENDED to be comprehensive, which apparently it was not (according to the Preface). Second, the reviewer says that the book is outdated. Well, my understanding from the Preface is that this book is meant to cover traditional slang and colloquial expressions, those expressions which are long-lived and not likely to disappear very quickly. That is, it is meant as a solid foundation for further study but also meant for immediate use in a great variety of common situations. Third, the reviewer complains that the book is arranged "in a not so easy to use format." Here, I agree, but then I cannot think of any other better format, whether alphabetical or whatever; and there is also an index to be referred to.
Overall, I wonder if the reviewer is judging the book not for what it was intended to be, but for what he was expecting, or hoping, it to be--two different things.
In my experience, which has covered a good deal of time in Japan, the expressions in this book are those which you are likely to hear quite often, and therefore form a good foundation for the study of the language. If you want to go beyond this, you are left pretty much on your own at present, and good luck to you.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2001-11-28

I live in Japan and I find this book not too useful. Whenever I hear a slang word that I don't know, I would try to look it up in this book but 95% of the time it's not there. It's fun to read the entries on its own, but it's not very comprehensive and a bit outdated. Also, the sections are arranged in a not so easy to use format. I wished that I had spent my money on something else.

                    4 out of 5 stars A little dated, but a good primer.......2001-02-16

As one of the other reviewers noted, many other books of "slang Japanese" focus primarily on vulgar vocabulary. While this book does have some pretty salty expressions, it has a great deal more depth than that, including expressions you might actually use. Also, many slang dictionaries are out-of-date before they hit the shelves. Being able to say the equivalent of "I'm a hep cat, daddy-o" in Japanese may have some humorous value, but in the grand scheme of understanding what is being said around you, it's not very useful. So this book has chosen to be quite conservative in the slang and colloquial expressions it uses. As a result, more than 80 percent of the expressions introduced in the book can be used today. It's a good first step out of the textbook and into the real world.
