Great resource!.......2000-06-23
This book has a great selection of climbs from glaciered peaks like Mt Rainier to remote rock climbs in the North Cascades. The pictures of the routes and the graphics of the rock pitches are excellent. The histories of each climb add to the total enjoyment of doing a route. It is a pleasure to read and a real asset for the climber.
A great climbing resource!.......2000-06-21
This book includes a great selection of climbs in the Cascade Mountains. From classic routes up Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker to more obscure climbs in North Cascade National Park, it has it all. The descriptions are clear and contain all of the pertinent information to get you to the top! The pictures of the routes and the graphics of the rock pitches are extremely useful. The history behind each climb also adds to the overall enjoyment of the climbing experience. It is a good resource for the beginning climber as well as the advanced. Read it and hit the hills!
A must for every climber in Washington!.......2000-06-19
This guide thoroughly describes several climbs in the cascades of Washington, ranging from simple walk-ups to technical rock climbs. It gives detailed information on the best climbs. I have used it extensively on numerous climbs and find it informative, current, easy to read, and very helpful. The maps and pictures with routes are especially helpful. Almost every major climb in the North Cascades is covered and the history section preceding the description of each climb is very interesting. This is a great book and a must for any mountaineer in Washington, whether they be a beginner or a seasoned climber.

When the authors of the first volume of Selected Climbs in the Cascades were choosing ascents to include in Vol. II, their criteria was simple: that the routes be fun and aesthetically outstanding. Nearly every climb in the book offers amazing views of snowfields, glacier-carved valleys, or craggy peaks shrouded in mist. And although there are technical climbs involving aids, grade V alpine ascents, and waterfall climbs rated WI5, these are balanced by easier routes that require nothing more than bouldering skills. This is not a collection of the most radical, derring-do challenges in the Cascades but rather climbs that are simply a blast.
Vol. II differs from Vol. I in that it includes not just alpine routes but sport climbs and crag climbs--great for folks who want to take their rock-gym skills outside. The book also rates the approach to each climb from the car, whether it be a 10-minute walk or a grueling, two-day hike to a frozen waterfall. It's a practical consideration, as some of the approaches are more physically demanding than the actual route. Climbs covered begin in the southern Cascades, dominated by volcanoes Hood, Adams, and Rainier, and move northward to Snoqualmie Pass, with its easily accessible sport climbs and occasionally tough alpine routes. The guide finally moves into the North Cascades. Here, the mountains lose their volcanic character and take on the glacial-carved ruggedness of spots like Forbidden Peak and Mount Fury. More than 500 glaciers dot the area, and serious alpinists will find plenty in this section to occupy them.
Anyone who climbs in the Pacific Northwest should find Vol. II useful, whether they prefer rock or ice. It's a good entry-level guide, though it's not a how-to-climb manual; get your climbing fundamentals down, then pick up a copy. --Demian McLean

Could not be a better guidebook........2000-06-28
This is one of the most well done guidebooks I have ever seen. Some of my friends refer to the first volume of this book as "The Bible of Northwest Climbing." This one is destined for the same accolades.
The book itself is made of heavy stock paper - something that you can throw around in your car and not worry about too much. The black and white pictures are awesome and the route descriptions are well written. Hardware suggestions appear to be appropriate and the permit information looks good too.
This book describes 96 new routes and includes crag climbs (something which was not covered in the first edition). Perhaps the best thing about this book is that most of the climbs are somewhat off of the beaten track and not the most well known. Every self-respecting climber in the northwest should own both of these books - they're guaranteed to get you excited and help you pick your next trip.

Customer Reviews:
A MUST-HAVE COMPANION TO THE DAVIS HARD-COVER BOOK !!!.......2007-01-13
If you only bought Sheila Davis' book on the Craft of Lyric Writing, do yourself a BIG favour and BUY THIS WORKBOOK! The new workbook gives you a chance to go through exercises for all the critical concepts that Davis teaches in her previous hard-cover book. If you are only thinking of buying this workbook, do yourself an even bigger favour and buy the hard-cover book as well. Both books are important to place in your library.
Thank you, Dr. Sheila!.......2003-11-22
Ms. Davis's other book, "The Craft of Lyric Writing", was recommended to me. Looking in the library this one was the next book over, (oh, great fortune!) so I took both out. I have just ordered both for purchase because, as a composer of some experience who has now made the leap of trying lyric writing (and anyone that thinks it's easy is kidding himself) I cannot imagine my library without them.
Her step-by-step suggestions, professional and well-considered insights, and many examples demonstrating things like writers' consistent viewpoint, simplicity/clarity, etc. (or lack thereof) have already resulted in a successful rewrite of a tune that was driving me bonkers.
Finally, for what it's worth, I'm not only not a 'book person' when learning something, but have no use for 'success formulas' and can smell snake oil a mile away---and this sure aint either.
Thank you, Dr. Sheila. You've made me a better songwriter.

Less than 100 pages in, and...WOW.......2003-09-01
So far this is a great book. Good for beginners who need to add structure to their writing. A note: this book seems like a good starting point and a good guideline as tohow to start writing. MY ONLY COMPLAINT: The example songs are old and outdated and therefore makes it somewhat hard for the younger reads. That's it. Enjoy.
Successful Lyric Writing Is a Success.......2000-04-23
In this book, Sheila Davis has designed a course of study that beautifully introduces the concepts of songwriting in an understandable and helpful order. Being a teacher, I value any book that offers students a chance to build skills through practical exercises.
Davis's exercises allow the student to explore concepts in whatever song style in which they write.
What I like best about this workbook is the section on "The Whole Brain." Once students have mastered the craft of lyric writing, Davis focuses on means of finding inspiration and beginning the writing process.
This book was a tremendous help to me and my fellow students as we began our journey into the world of songwriting. Thank you, Sheila Davis!

This manual is filled with model sheets for students to trace and copy for writing with the pointed brush. Oriental art supplies are demonstrated as students learn basic chinese characters, then the same technique applies to western letterforms. Write chinese characters for original greeting cards! Graphic designers and lettering artists use this book, too. An excellent companion to the Pointed Brush Writing Video.

Excellent for intermediate calligraphers!.......2001-04-08
Fran's book is one of the most elegant treatises on the topic of brush calligraphy, especially if used and viewed in conjunction with the corresponding video. I had known here since late 1987, and she was a fabulous woman and an expert artist. Anyone interested in the field or the art of writing should purchase this wonderful edition.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good, but fails to address the tough questions.......2006-05-30
This is a useful resource. It gives you a good list of items to improve customer satisfaction and perception. That said, it tends to oversimplify things and fails to address the tough items.
The author suggests good customer relations will lead to lifelong customers. But look at reality. Throughout this country, small businesses have been going under as large entities like Wallmart and Lowes offer better pricing. In Buckingham's view, Bob Johnson the local hardware guy secures lifetime customers with his caring nature, willingness to go the extra mile, and above-average service. Bob does this; he is the one to buy tickets to your kid's fundraiser, and spends 15 minutes telling you how to install a storm drain.
Unfortunately, once Walmart comes to town, Bob's former customers tend to shop there and come to him only for the tough jobs. In Buckingham's world, Walmarts achieve only marginal success as loyal customers reject their impersonal mass market approach; the monumental growth of these megastores which offer limited service but real bargains tells us differently.
The book would have been better had it dealt with the conflict between good pricing and good service, and when and how customers continue (how about a model of the unsentimental customer who continually assesses value, and returns only when that is provided).
So read the book and incorporate this as one perspective, but don't bet the house on it. You might find that competing on price and limiting unprofitable service can be a model that you will sometimes need to use.
Super Serve Clients.......2003-04-04
Many common sense pieces of advice, nicely organized and clearly spelled out. A great refresher for anyone with experience and excellent primer for those entering any service industry. He reminds us all that its easier, smarter, and more rewarding to keep a client happy than it is to pound the pavement to find a new one. I was suprised and chagrined to realize that some of tips were techniques I knew but had over time forgotten to practice. Highly recommend this book.
An absolute "must" for any businessperson.......2002-01-14
Customer Once, Client Forever: 12 Tools For Building Lifetime Business Relationships by Richard Buckingham (president of GoalStar Business Strategies working with Fortune 100 companies) is an upbeat business self-help book about how to turn one's customers into clients for life. Filled with concise, economically worded lessons and questions to ponder, each chapter offers a wealth of sound advice on such topics as continually improving oneself, gaining client feedback, and converting good clients into lifetime clients. Customer Once, Client Forever is an absolute "must" for any businessperson from cafe owners to marketing corporations who solicits and depends upon repeat customers!
Great tools to improve your selling techniques.......2001-11-10
This book is easy to understand with its clear structure, writer uses simple English to make sure all the readers can get what he is trying to say (and that is one of the tools he suggested, say your clients' language without jargon).
The 12 tools are organised in sequence, from managing internal business standard to performing excellent services to external clients, it provides lots of practical sugesstions in different aspects to build lifetime relationships with clients. Also, it's creative and useful to summarize the most urgent things that you need to do and put it in a box called 'Monday Morning', it's telling you what you can do to achieve those objectives he had mentioned, not just the theories.
In conclusion, it's worthwhile to read this book as it's very useful for your present or future business and interpersonal skills.
Detail guideline for sales or customer service.......2001-11-05
This book presenting the ideas of how to become a successful sales or customer service. Those ideas are very practicable and useful. From preparation to follow-up, that book providing lots of ideas to let you turn your customer to lifetime client. There are lots of personal and real life examples to elaborate the ideas. Book Description
Between 1941 and 1946, in response to the devastation caused by World War II, memories of the Great Depression, and the prospect of Soviet expansion, a group of politicians, diplomats, and economists in the United States and Great Britain sought to repair the ruined economies of of Europe and secure economic prosperity for America. Their program, which became known as multilateralism, called for reduced quotas on imports, lowered tariffs, the abandonment of currency exchange controls, and economic decision making by international bodies. Randall Woods explores this attempt to create an interdependent world economy and sets it against the broader political and strategic backdrop of the period.
In the United States, multilateralism attracted New Deal liberals because it proposed to help not only the established economic interests but traditionally disadvantaged groups such as farmers and industrial workers as well. Moderate socialists in Britain also lent their support to a liberalized trading system, as did many conservatives on both sides of the Atlantic, believing that the program would preserve some degree of free enterprise in the international economy.
Unfortunately for its disciples, Woods argues, multilateralism was so modified by the forces of isolationism and economic nationalismand by bureaucratic politics in the United Statesthat it failed to achieve its economic and strategic goals. The international economy that emerged after World War II was not an equitable partnership and merely finalized the fifty-year process by which the United States supplanted Great Britain as the arbiter of Western Capitalism. In the end, modified multilateralism hampered rather than facilitated the free flow of goods and capital, and it did little to promote social democracy.
