      Book Description

This book examines transaction cost economics, the influential theoretical perspective on organizations and industry that was the subject of Oliver Williamson's seminal book,Markets and Hierarchies (1975). Written by leading economists, sociologists, and political scientists, the essays collected here reflect the fruitful intellectual exchange that is occurring across the major social science disciplines. They examine transaction cost economics' general conceptual orientation, its specific theoretical propositions, its applications to policy, and its use in systematic empirical research. The chapters include classic texts, broad review essays, reflective commentaries, and several new contributions to a wide range of topics, including organizations, regulations and law, institutions, strategic management, game theory, entrepreneurship, innovation, finance, and technical information. The book begins with an overview of theory and research on transaction cost economics, highlighting the specific accomplishments of scholars working within the perspective and emphasizing the enormous influence that transaction cost reasoning exerts on the social sciences. The following section covers conceptual uses for the transaction cost framework and major theoretical or methodological elements within it, such as bounded rationality. While advancing some interesting theoretical propositions, these chapters are in fact more ambitious: each examines a specific field, area, or research program and attempts to fashion a new way of thinking about research questions. In the section on industrial applications, contributors study the application of transaction cost theory to a range of problems in utilities, telecommunications, laser printing, and early international trade. The book closes with four microanalytical chapters that delve into the structures and behaviors of specific aspects of firms and organizations: boards of directors, equity structures, employment models, human resource policies and practices, technology strategies, and innovation events. Firms, Markets, and Hierarchies collects excellent social science work on transaction cost economics, taking stock of its status, charting its future development, and fostering its renewal and evolution.

                  Book Description

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) has become important in rice farming systems because this process diminishes the need for expensive chemical fertilizers which have been associated with numerous health and environmental problems. The extensive exploitation of BNF would provide economic benefits to small farmers, avoiding all malign influences of chemical fertilizers.
Meanwhile, advances in biotechnology have brought rice genetics to the threshold of new opportunities for increasing rice production.
This volume focuses, in six different sessions, on the role of BNF in the improvement of rice production in the light of the current state of the art of BNF technology transfer and diffusion. New ideas on BNF technology in research, extension information and inoculant technology are also included, together with the socio-economic impacts of using BNF in rice farm systems.

                      Book Description

Respect for animals has always been a part of human consciousness. Poets, thinkers, philosophers, scientists and statesmen have long celebrated our compassion towards Earth's other beasts.

Awe for the Tiger, Love for the Lamb compiles the most significant statements of sensibility to animals in the history of thought. From the myths of the ancient world to the Middle Ages to Darwin and beyond, Preece captures the most telling and fascinating accounts of humankind's relationship to the wild world, placing them in historical context.

Jung called it "an unconscious identity with animals," while Wordsworth saw it as the "primal sympathy which having been must ever be." Linking the diverse chords of human experience that are touched by the animal world, Preece shows that despite a historical thread of cruelty, there still remains in all humanity a constant underlying concern for other beings as an integral part of the moral community.

With musings and meditations from Lao Tse to Mohammed, from Plato to Jane Goodall, from classical religion to parliamentary proceedings, Awe for the Tiger, Love for the Lamb is an original, superbly researched history that deepens our understanding of all living beings.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome story my son loves it!.......2005-06-16

We love all of her books and buy them 1 at a time as we can afford them. In an age of big in your face pop up books and childrens books that make your eyes hurt these books are a wonderful find. As always the illustrations are beautiful - I read all the reviews first but few had actual specifics about the actual invdividual stories of her books, so that's what I've done here. I hope it helps others know what wonderful books they are. I wish they were easier to find in Canada.

This story is about Ollie - his father gets him a pair of skis for his 6th birthday. He waited longingly for winter to come. He was so excited when it did that he wanted to go use his skis. His mum made sure he ate his porridge and was dressed warmly before he headed out. He came across Jack Frost who takes him to King Winters castle. They come across Mrs. Thaw who is trying to melt the snow but Jack Frost chases her off and breathes on everything to make it all frozen again. They go off to king winters castle which is beautiful and built of polished ice. He meets king winter and gets to see people sitting around the fire working away happily making ski boots and women knitting thick socks. In another room he sees girls knitting ski mitts and embroidering and in a big workshop some boys were building skis and tobggans and sledges and skate blades. They were trying to finish them all for everyone before Christmas. When they all took a break, Ollie gets to go outside and ski, skate and built snowmen and big snowcastles and have a huge snowball fight. When the break was over the children went back inside and Jack Frost offered to take Ollie home, so they harnessed a reindeer and had him pull them on Ollie's skis. Jack Frost said goodbye at the edge of the forest. Come Christmas morning Ollie was so excited to find a pair of magnificent skates for himself and a toboggan for his little brother. He knew at once Jack Frost had paid him a visit! He used his skates nearly every day that winter and they tried to get Mrs. Thaw to not come in the spring but she came and melted all the snow. Then spring came driving up in her airy carriage, and curtsied to Mrs. Thaw and Ollie decided he really liked Mrs. Thaw after all. Wonderful story!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, old-world art and story.......1999-04-10

Ollie gets his first pair of skiis and uses them in the woods near his home somewhere in Scandanavia. He meets up with Jack-Frost, and some other colorful characters. The art-work is of a style and beauty long missing in childrens' books. Ms. Beskow's drawings are from an earlier period in children's literature, and are quite nostaligic for those of us raised with our grandparent's childrens' books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but not for complete beginners.......2007-10-07

I found Coulson's "Sanskrit" a wonderful book, dense with information. However the title "Teach Yourself" is a misnomer: I cannot imagine someone with no prior knowledge of ancient languages making profitable use of it. Like the reviewer below, I am fortunate enough to know Latin and Greek already, and I'm also familiar with Hindi and the Devanagari script. (I'm also fluent in French, another language with which Coulson also assumes some familiarity). If I didn't already have this background, I don't think I'd be able to make head or tail of this book. Unfortunately, as many other reviewers have said, Sanskrit just is a really hard language (far harder than Latin, Greek or Hindi in my opinion), and there's no getting around that basic fact. Coulson aims to get you up to a very high level by the end of the book, and he has to go at a lightning pace to do that: however I would suggest a more gently-paced introduction to readers who don't already have a substantial linguistic background.

                        3 out of 5 stars Super Technical.......2007-09-01

I am sure this book serves a very good purpose (Academic research etc).

However it is not for a layman trying to learn Sanskrit.

An Appreciation Without Apprehension by Bharat S. Shah is such a nice book for an absolute beginner.

Among things that I don't like in this book are that the Author does not use devanagri scrip uniformly throughout the book. It would be nice to read it in the script in which the language is actually written.

However, Sanskrit resources are not that easily available and I have certainly learned some valuable things from this book. So this is a good book to have in your library. Just know that this is a very technical book (and when I say technical, I really mean it). Unless you are in langage research, you will find this book hard to decipher.

But there are sections that are helpful. Its a good addition to collect. Just not a book for laymen trying to learn Sanskrit.

There are other grammar books which are targeted towards beginners and might be more relevant.

5 out of 5 stars A must for every sanskrit newbie.......2006-10-12

What makes this sanskrit primer special is the easy with which you can read it. In contrast to the chippy style of other more "classical" books, you will realy enjoy reading this one - it gives you a lot of interesting background information about the language, which as I found, makes learning the stuff much easier.

Unlike other books, allmost all of the texts in the book are taken from original sanskrit sources. So you are directly confronted with what you most probably intend to do after being able to read in sanskrit - enjoing the sanskrit liteature in its original form.

Anyway, even I'm a newbie in sanskrit, I highly recomend the book - it is one of the best resources on sanskrit I found so far.

I could not exclude, that you are going to need other sanksrit resources also, however you should not miss this one - mainly becuase it is so motivating reading it, and also because of the background information you get, which you otherwise would not find in the more systematicly organized sanskrit primers.
And as I said, you will enjoy it - it is more like a gripping thriller than a boring textbook.

2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but very hard.......2006-08-05

Struggling with this book, it is anything but a book for beginners. Unless you are a god of linguistics or already know Sanskrit, probably better to start somewhere (anywhere) else. I will grant Coulson that - it is comprehensive...

5 out of 5 stars The best book for beginners.......2006-07-14

This is by far the best introductory book for those interested in studying Sanskrit seriously on their own. The book is not easy, but then, neither is Sanskrit. Coulson presents Sanskrit grammar clearly, and his exercises are extremely useful. Completing this book will make it possible for a student to read relatively simple Sanskrit texts with a dictionary on his or her own.

4 out of 5 stars Ancient and sublime.......2004-08-22

I got this text by Michael Coulson, then head of the Department of Sanskrit at Edinburgh University, Scotland, about twenty five years ago. I was studying religious studies, and wanted to be able to understand the primary scriptures of the primary religions of the world in their original languages as much as possible; I've had a reasonable facility with languages in terms of reading, and found that Coulson's book fit my style of learning rather well.

There is a useful, pull-out sandhi grid early in the book, that shows consonants and vowels. This does not show all possible combinations, but most of the basic ones. This is a hard thing to remember (rather like learning the difference between written English and spoken English, where the pronunciations colloquially vary depending upon accent as well as position in the sentence or the speed of talking). Sanskrit is a langauge where it isn't necessary to learn the entire alphabetic structure for writing at the outset -- Coulson recommends this as a gradual process, and I agree with this idea. The primary Sanskrit font described and used here (a common Sanskrit font throughout India, although far from the only one) is the nagari script.

Sanskrit is a part of the Indo-European family of languages, but that being said, it is vastly different from English, and the student of this book would be well-advised to make sure she or he has a good command of English grammar ideas, and the willingness to not attempt to apply them to the Sanskrit sentences and passages presented.

Coulson in his introduction makes the distinction between a learned language and a natural one, as well as a dead language and a living one. Sanskrit to a Western student is both a learned and a dead language; to the late Sanskrit writers, it was both learned and living -- very roughly parallel to the Latin used in academic circles in the Middle Ages, a language still living in a sense, but not a natural language for anyone. Sanskrit has much greater fluidity and variation over its incredibly long history; Coulson introduces bits and pieces of these strands, but stays fairly close to a classical Sanskrit represented by the most common and widespread of religious texts.

There would be only one item where I really feel I must take marks off, and that would be the constant use of transliteration into Latinate script rather than using the Sanskrit throughout the models. While almost all of the reading passages are in the Sanskrit basic font style, the various grammar points (conjugation and declension charts, etc.) are presented in transliteration, which made things a bit more difficult for me, as I'd sometimes have to struggle not only to remember the Sanskrit but also the code for the transliteration (which, of course, never coincides with the transliteration paradigms in other langauge texts I've studied).

This book is designed both for classroom use and for self-study. Based on my readings and comparisons of my translations on texts such as the Rig Veda with other, published translation, this book has helped me gain a working knowledge of Sanskrit, and provides a useful text for review on a periodic basis.

It includes an answer key to all the major exercises, a guide for further study, an introduction to prose/poetry constructions, and a useful vocabulary glossary.
