Book Description

Published in Association with UNRISD, United Nations Research Institute for Social Development This wide-ranging comparative analysis of contemporary and future changes in welfare states examines the different trajectories of the welfare states of Europe, North America, the Antipodes, and the emerging scenarios in Latin America, East Asia, and central and eastern Europe. Leading experts from these regions explore the current structures of social protection, consider the causes of the current welfare state crisis, and highlight evolving trends for welfare policy. The emerging picture is one of varied policy choices in each region. Contributors argue that anxieties about population aging as a cause of welfare decline are exaggerated and that the key issue for welfare states is enabling women to work and form families simultaneously. They suggest that the neoliberal strategy of deregulation and heightened inequality is no real solution because its negative side effects. The authors conclude that a viable positive-sum solution would involve social investment strategies, offering guarantees against entrapment in poverty or low-paying jobs. Professionals and researchers in comparative social policy, sociology, economics and political science will find Welfare States in Transition an invaluable resource.

5 out of 5 stars More Esping-Andersonesque Insight.......1999-02-09

While perhaps not as ambitious as "Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism", this volume is also less concerned to push a theory. Instead it takes a broad global view of Welfare States, not only in the rich western countries, but also in East Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. This collection of essays again shows Esping-Anderson's (and his groupies') enviably clear understanding of why Welfare States behave the way they do. The prose is wonderfully clear through-and-through.

        Book Description

Biogeography is about the geographical distribution, both past and present, of plants, animals and other organisms. In this undergraduate textbook, Spellerberg and Sawyer bring a modern approach to a developing subject, writing in a lively and sometimes provocative manner. Throughout the text, the authors emphasize the applications of biogeography to conservation management, economic production, environmental assessment, sustainable use of resources, landscape planning, and public health. They discuss applications of island biogeography in conservation, the concept of wildlife corridors, the analysis of biogeographical data, and the role of humans and their cultures in biogeography. The applied approach of this textbook, along with its numerous illustrative examples and figures, make it a unique introduction to the field for many geography, biology and environmental science students.

5 out of 5 stars A scholarly and comprehensive look at the complex problems.......2002-09-08

Now in a second edition with updated statistics, references to legislation, discussions, and new knowledge about creative coastal design, and collaboratively written by Timothy Beatley (Professor, Department of Urban and Environmental Planning, University of Virginia), David J. Bower (Research Professor, Department of City and Regional Planning, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill); and Anna K. Schwab (Research Associate, Department of City and Regional Planning, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), An Introduction To Coastal Zone Management is a scholarly and comprehensive look at the complex problems of environmental management of coastal areas. Written for students and professionals, An Introduction to Coastal Zone Management covers a wealth of topics including shoreline erosion, lake stratification, coastal sprawl, and much, much more. An Introduction To Coastal Zone Management is very highly recommended reading for anyone with a determined interest in the field and an essential addition to Environmental Studies academic reference collections.

        4 out of 5 stars A great intro.......2001-01-30

As a student of geography, I was given the opportunity to do some shoreline management work for the local county. Although I had taken some classes regarding shorelines, I needed a crash course in coastal management, and I was pointed to this book. Within two days, I knew as much as I needed to know about coastal issues.

The book covers a wide variety of issues, ranging from the history of coastal population concentration, environmental issues, private property rights, and zoning and other useful information for the planner. This book gave me a great introductory knowledge, and was able to satisfy most of my questions.

I recommend this book to anyone who thinks they may be interested in Shoreline Management, City or Urban Planning, or Environmental or Population issues.

Toxicology of Reptiles cohesively summarizes much of the cutting-edge research taking place in fields such as reptilian endocrinology, neurophysiology, immunology, and ecology. It also addresses conservation needs along with the complications often associated with population studies. The text is easy to synthesize and apply in the evaluation and understanding of potential risks to reptiles from environmental contaminants. This book provides a comprehensive description of the current state of knowledge of reptilian toxicology from the perspective of target organ systems. It covers major contaminant classes within each chapter, focusing on those of greatest concern. The authors highlight the most pressing information gaps, and propose priority directions for further advancement in the fields of reptilian biology, wildlife and environmental toxicology, conservation, and ecological risk assessment.

              Book Description

Amphibians are the extant descendants of the first vertebrate class to successfully colonize terrestrial environments; hence they occupy a unique position between fish and reptiles. Amphibian skin provides essentially no resistance to evaporative water loss, and consequently daily water
turnover rates are an order of magnitude greater than in other terrestrial vertebrate groups. This has led to a suite of physiological, morphological and behavioural adaptations that have allowed a successful terrestrial existence in spite of this apparently spendthrift water retention strategy.

Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Amphibians provides a synthesis of current research on the comparative physiology of amphibians with a particular emphasis on water balance. It adopts a strong environmental perspective and includes a wealth of information on ecology, phylogeny and
development. As with other books in the Ecological and Environmental Physiology Series, the emphasis in this book is on the unique physiological characteristics of the amphibians, although the latest experimental techniques and future research directions are also considered. This accessible text is
suitable for both graduate students and researchers in the fields of amphibian comparative physiology and physiological ecology, including specialist courses in amphibian ecology. It will also be of value and use to the many professional herpetologists requiring a concise overview of the
              topic.

                  Description:
The present study aims to introduce the regulation of estrogen receptors (ER) in primary cultured hepatocytes of the amphibian Xenopus laevis as a further potential estrogenic biomarker. Time courses of free ER in cell cultures treated with 17@b-estradiol (E2), nonylphenol (NP), and bisphenol A (BPA) were determined by means of radioreceptorassay (RARA). All compounds led to an immediate drop of free ER followed by a significant increase. The estrogen specific induction of ER-mRNA in vitro during time course was verified by using semiquantitative RT-PCR demonstrating greatest differences after 36 h. Dose-response curves of ER-mRNA for E2, NP, and BPA revealed that E2 possessed highest estrogenicity starting at 10^-^9 M, while NP and BPA induced significant increases at 10^-^8 and 10^-^7 M, respectively. Extracts of the river Alb were subjected to RARA for ER binding to cytosolic liver fraction as well as to primary cultured hepatocytes for assessment of ER-mRNA induction. The results by RARA demonstrated clearly that binding to ER was highest in sewage treatment plant effluents and increased during the course of the river. These findings could be correlated with induction of ER-mRNA levels in vitro indicating that both techniques are suitable for application in monitoring of estrogenic EDC.

This is one of the best all around resource books for younger elementary children that I have ever come across. It covers many areas in many subjects in the simplest way possible. My granddaughter uses it for all of her classes and she is home schooled.
