Book Description
The American labor market faces many deep-rooted problems, including persistence of a large low-wage sector, worsening inequality in earnings, employees’ lack of voice in the workplace, and the need of employers to maximize flexibility if they are to survive in an increasingly competitive market. The impetus for this book is the absence of a serious national debate about these issues.
The book represents nearly three years of deliberation by more than 250 people drawn from business, labor, community groups, academia, and government. It traces today’s labor-market policy and laws back to the New Deal and to a second wave of social regulation that began in the 1960s. Underlying the current system are assumptions about who is working, what workers do, and how much job security workers enjoy. Economic and social changes have rendered those assumptions invalid and have resulted in mismatches between labor institutions and efficient and equitable deployment of the workforce, as well as between commitments to the labor market and family responsibilities. This book should launch a national dialogue on how to update our policies and institutions to catch up with the changes in the nature of work, in the workforce, and in the economy.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly written/some good insights.......2003-01-30
The poor, repetitious writing may be due to the fact that there was a "group effort" preparing and writing the book. There are a lot of good insights comparing the "old economy" labor force and the "new economy" labor force. The reader, however, must perservere to get through the repetition and disorganization. There are few short but interesting case studies in Chapter 3, and lots of left-wing policy recommendations throughout the book.

Book Description
As the title so aptly suggests, Keeping Your Job While Your Bosses Are Losing Theirs describes how to survive today's changing, highly competitive, and uncertain job market.

Dramatic changes in the world marketplace-mergers, acquisitions, buyouts, downsizing and reorganization-altered this favorable position and left many workers uncertain about their futures.
Marylou Hughes, a psychotherapist in private practice, has served as a consultant to a variety of organizations and as an employment assistance counselor. Dr. Hughes' advice about how to keep one's job and make oneself essential to new bosses and restructured companies is ever so timely. She provides readers with 38 specific, pragmatic techniques and strategies for coping with the current unpredictable work environment. Keeping Your Job While Your Bosses Are Losing Theirs provides sound advice about how to avoid becoming the victim of organizational change and the emotions that arise in response to it.

Book Description
It was truly a crime against innocents. Eleven dolphins, part of an experiment in healing, are found slaughtered in their saltwater tanks. When Thorn investigates, he triggers a vicious attack that leaves him paralyzed from the waist down, plagued by unrelenting pain. Now Thorn, a Florida renegade who has lived a life of fierce freedom, is starting over in a wheelchair, bitter enough to drive his lover away, desperate enough to seek miracles on the fringes of medical science--where his childhood friend, now a doctor, is doing
cutting-edge research in a quest for the ultimate painkiller.
Bean Wilson was once destined for greatness. Then came the war in Vietnam, a debilitating injury, and a simmering rage. Now Bean is running a pain-relief clinic in Key West, assisted by a beautiful six-foot-tall island girl named Pepper Tremaine, who chews hot chilies like gum and carries a scalpel in her blouse. Under the guise of a respectable research facility, Bean and Pepper are using human beings as lab rats, then feeding the bodies of their failures to the shark-churned sea. Within hours of entering the clinic, Thorn can sense the danger. But when he begins to make the bizarre connection between eleven dead dolphins and Bean's clinic, the stakes are raised. Because Dr. Bean Wilson, a man who knows exactly how an amputated limb can scream with real, unbearable agony, may be on the brink of the most dangerous discovery of all: a cure for human pain. And in a climax that explodes with the kind of secrets that can turn friends into enemies and lovers into strangers, Red Sky At Night races toward a harrowing showdown between Thorn, imprisoned in a wheelchair, and a mad, ruthless doctor who will stop at nothing to cure his own twisted pain.
A full-throttle thriller of unparalleled suspense, Red Sky At Night is also a powerful human drama. For here are the hurts that afflict the body, mind, and spirit. And here is the wounded love between old friends and rivals: the twisted love between the beautiful, rough-hewn Pepper Tremaine and the doctor she worships, and, ultimately, the love risked between Thorn, caught in his bitterness and his rage, and a good woman willing to stay with him to the end.

Pleasue and Pain.......2006-02-24
Although NOT for the faint of heart or squeamish this incredibly powerful and visceral thriller cements James W.Hall's place as one of the absolute best writers around. His ability to create incredibly complex characters and so throughly convey the trials they have to endure give so much emotional depth to his novels that simply classifying them as thrillers or mysteries does not do him justice. Combine this with his gift of being able to transport the reader to the point of actually feeling as if you are there in the Florida Keys and you have the makings of a great novel. My only warning would be don't start this book if you have other plans (you'll postpone them!) or want a good nights sleep. This book will stay with you long after you have finished the last page-enjoy!
Not the best book ever .......2004-12-09
I read maybe 8 mysteries within the course of a year(not counting the works of Lawrence Block). If a book ever gets to point where I can tell what is going to happen next the author is not doing the best job possible.
And the ending was a little weak as well
That's not to say that I didn't like the setup or the characters, some of whom were absolutely hilarious, especially Pepper and her odd fascination with...well peppers.
I made the same mistake I always make I read a book in a series out of order. Have to go back and read the entire series now.
Pain. There is no more lively sensation than that of pain;.......2002-09-10
Pain. There is no more lively sensation than that of pain; its impressions are certain and dependable. Marquis de Sade (1740-1814)
What a riveting book! This is my first James W. Hall novel and it I loved it. His strong, bold, vivid characters, often border on the audacious and bizarre. In "Red Sky at Night" Hall pulls you into worlds of paralysis, paraplegics and pain. And as Marquis de Sade said "there is no more lively sensation than that of pain". The Key West setting combined with the madness, murders, mayhem and macabre characters, makes this book a top ratebeach read. Strongly Recommended
THRILLING..........2001-11-18
This book is one of the most exciting I've ever read. As an aficionado of mystery (Ruth Rendell is another of my favorites), I give this book a five star rating. In terms of twists and turns it's right up there with Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris and Mercy by David L. Lindsay. It also has a deeply Floridian atmosphere and a few moments of black humor, a la the late lamented John D. McDonald. Don't make any immediate plans if you get ahold of this book; you won't want to put it down. A word of warning to the faint of heart: this is a medical thriller and has a few very dark moments. But the ending crackles and is MOST satisfying. Kudos to James W. Hall; keep them coming!
No Wimps allowed in Reality, Florida........2001-02-25
"Red Sky At Night" will take you all the way down before letting you have another breath of air. This story is hard to understand if your life has been easy and candy-coated, but should resonate with all those (painful) real world experiences. Consistent and evenly paced, "Red Sky at Night" goes way beyond what others portray. Just be carefull!

A Believable Submarine Thriller in the Tom Clancy Mold! .......2006-09-14
Author Bill Bigelow, who is a former Navy officer and also an actor from old TV shows like Hawaii Five-O, Charlie's Angels, Magnum P.I. and Jake and The Fatman, has created a great submarine thriller that gives the reader total satisfaction. The book has a great balance between the plot and the character development. This is a well written and an intelligent accounting of a very plausible scenario dealing with submarines, secrets, murder, spies, and international intrigue.
The phrasing and writing technique that Bigelow uses to tell his tale, makes for entertaining story telling. This book will hold your attention from the first few pages all the way to last satisfying pages. This is a great undersea novel that connects well with the reader. I loved the book. I believe that Bigelow has all the potential to join a very elite group of best selling writers of military fiction. This is a must read! Watch this author he is going to be noticed!
The MWSA gives this book its Highest Book Rating of Five Stars!
Gripping tale.......2005-11-01
I read this book in my spare time over the weekend. My wife got mad because I couldn't put it down. The story line is plausible, if not probable, and there were a few minor typos, like though for thought that I found in 4 places in the book.
A couple of things I did catch that were incorrect though, a KC-135 is the military version of the Boeing 707 not the 747. The scenario of the deportation of the two women is wrong, but I worked for INS for over 25 years. State doesn't deport people Justice does, they need a hearing and they would definately go to jail for the espionage before deportation.
The last thing that troubled me, more out of a curiosity standpoint than anything else, was with the problems and escalation of the situation in the book, why would a US Navy ship make a port call in Hong Kong, now part of China? It just seemed out of character for the story line.
My criticism is truly minor, mostly because of what I did, and for the most part people would not know unless they worked within the Federal system. The book is well written and, as I said in the title of the review, it truly is gripping. You can't put this book down until you get to page 465.
We need another book from Bill Bigelow

Book Description
An anthology of British socialist poetry. It starts with William Blake, John Clare, Charles Dickens and Shelley, and ends with Carol Ann Duffy, Benjamin Zephaniah, Jackie Kay and Mr Social Control. Here we have the poetry of the first world war (Isaac Rosenberg, Ivor Gurney); the celebration of revolution (Hugh McDiarmid, D H Lawrence); the hungry thirties (Auden, C Day Lewis and Louis MacNiece); the second world war years (Alun Lewis, Hamish Henderson); new post-war voices (Alex Comfort, Roger McGough); the years of colonial liberation (Adrian Mitchell, James Berry); new voices of black writing (Grace Nichols, Jean Binta Breeze) and the women's movement (Liz Lochhead, Alison Fell); the Thatcher years (Sean O'Brien, Anne Stevenson) and modern times (Kathleen Jamie, Linda France). In all - 153 poems from 117 poets. Many of the poets will be well-known to poetry readers....a few will be forgotten voices. Red Sky At Night tells the story of the movement of an idea from the margins of British life to the center, and then out again to its disreputable edges. It tells the story of the engagement by British poets with contemporary political events. And it provides a sustained political footnote to the literary history of the last century.

Book Description
Examining the role played by partial charge transfer in biology, this work offers a theroetical basis of the physics and chemistry of charge transfer complex formation, especially the function of excited states. It discusses drug interactions, highlighting interaction between different types of antibiotics and suggests ways for the synthesis of pharmaceutical products with reduced side effects.
Book Description
Behind the happy picture of animals as pets, as entertainment, as humankind's helpers and friends, there lies a fearsome and often hidden reality of animals as killers. It is this darker side of man's contact with animals that Edward R. Ricciuti, author, science journalist, hunter, and environmentalist, explores in KILLER ANIMALS.
With a wealth of documented reports from hundreds of zoologists and field biologists, Ricciuti examines the human-beast conflict as it pervades modern life: in homes, in cities and suburbs, in what is left of the wilderness. He tells of animals' revenge as they turn on their hunters; of pets gone berserk and attacking small children; of terrible, gruesome attacks in zoos and circuses; and of the formidable array of animal-borne diseases that continue to plague us.
In addition, Ricciuti uncovers much shocking information on the thriving, modern-day animal underworld of cockfighting, poaching, black-market animal dealers, snake cultists, alligator wrestlers, and much more.
In a sharply critical style, Ricciuti focuses on the hypocrisy, sentimentalism, and commercialization that pervade today's animal "industry," and he has some pungent comments on organized pet lovers, safari parks, animals on TV, and mass-market pet stores. Ricciuti ultimately suggests that the darker side of animals is something we may bring upon ourselves.

Customer Reviews:
What to do out of the water.......2007-07-09
I was somewhat dissapointed in this book but by the same token taken by pleasant surprise regarding certain aspects of the book. It is not great on technique and the mechanics of swimming; for that lack of information I was dissapointed. To the authors credit he tells you right out the gate that this is not what you will find in this book and suggests some other books. This was helpful. The information regarding various excercises that can be done in the gym to help your swimming was excellent and most beneficial. Being a very average recreational swimmer I found this helpful for taking that next step using swimming as a cardio vascular excercise routine. All in all I enjoyed this book on what to do out of the water. Recommended for seniors looking to better understand the physical aspects of swimming and how to improve your overall conditioning .
not the basics.......2006-11-04
I just started swimming and was expecting some " how to swim better" tips. This book is more about the next level, which is not bad, just not what I expected. It focuses on swimming's effect on the body, which is informative, but is mostly focused on comeptition etc. Not useful for a novice.
Good tips.......2006-03-09
There are plenty of good tips for the past 50 swimmer, although the book is light on technique. Excellent for the swimmer dealing with injury and any older swimmer curious about how to set up an effective workout.
Not for beginners.......2006-03-01
Be warned -- this book is aimed more at serious swimmers, those largely with competitive urges, than at the fitness swimmer who is interested primarily in the health benefits of swimming as exercise.
The authors are explicit about their purpose. They state: "Swimming Past 50 is not a 'learn to swim' book. [It] covers in more depth the benefits of an intense, structured training program, in order to prepare for competition."
I swam competitively in high school, 45 years ago. Recently, I decided to get back into swimming as an additional mode of exercise beside the running I've done for nearly 50 years. Because of the long time away from swimming, I felt I needed some guidance. I have on my shelf two books from this same series: "Weight Training Past 50" and "Running Past 50." I found both of those helpful for someone with my interests. I thought that "Swimming Past 50" would be the same kind of book.
However, I discovered that the book centers on serious training, with distances on the order of 3000 to 4500 yards per workout. Now, I don't have the time for that kind of training commitment, nor the interest in working through the multiple levels of training cycles described (multiyear, annual, macrocycle, microcycle, and workout -- one or two per day!!), nor the cascades of sets of laps at different paces, etc., etc., that this book describes and recommends.
If you are interested in being this kind of serious swimmer, as opposed to someone (like me) who only wants a less impactful form of exercise, perhaps you will find this book useful. I give it only three stars to emphasize that the raves it gets from other reviewers need a touch of circumspection.
written by a swimmer for swimmers.......1999-10-07
Mel understands every aspect of serious swimming and is able to communicate his life's experience with the sport in an understandable and enjoyable way. As a fellow US Masters swimmer, I especially apprecitate his knowledge of what it takes to get faster on a continuing basis through an understanding of stroke mechanics and training.

Book Description
[This] is a book for the writer hidden or not so hidden in us all...It is a book for any age, to be read in little bits or all at once, and to be reread regularly.
- Inland
Here is a personal and compassionate book for everyone writers, poets, teachers, lovers of life, and especially those seeking to find their writing voices again or for the first time. It is an autobiographical travelogue moving from a volcano in Hawaii to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and places in between, with writing at its heart.
Writing Toward Home offers practical advice on overcoming some of the obstacles writers of all ages face: writer's block, fear of rejection, confronting silencing critics in your head, finding the time to write. Each short chapter speaks to the larger truths about writing and how to truly live the writer's life: how to become more of a risk taker, how to excavate the past as a source, and how to become an acute observer of the world.
Writing Toward Home is a book that will remind you-and help you remind your students-that the true source of writing is the creative self. In this fast culture when most people have so little time to do anything but menial tasks, it will jumpstart you, it will awaken to you the journey within, it will make you want to write.
Customer Reviews:
Waking up your desire to write...........2005-09-17
I have to thank my English professor for using this book in her Expository Writing class. It is one of the most excellent books I have read recently. The sweet, thoughtful and friendly tone of Georgia Heard led me through each page of this wonderful book. It will tell you how to notice every subtle thing around to see how much beauty there is in this world. It will also wake up your desire to write by keeping a notebook/journal.
And if you are moved as deeply as I was, someday you will find yourself stopping by a small stream and observing a little squirrel running across the bushes with great interest. There is always some beauty in nature, I believe, and this book leads you toward that desire to discover beauty in life.
Good For Writers At All Levels.......2005-08-02
This book is similar in theory and style to Natalie Goldberg's WRITING DOWN THE BONES. The author, Heard, uses home as a metaphor for wholeness one gains from the writing experience. There are 57 short chapters with witty titles, such as "Writing Is Like Making Tortillas," "From an Onion to My Grandmother," "Whispering into the Air," and "Try Woodworking." The best aspect about the book for me is that the act of writing is demystified and seen as a necessary and important human activity. We see this through the struggles of the author and those she meets. One of the best examples of this demystifying process is in the chapter "Poetry Inside Us All." The author describes going on a Navajo reservation to work with students and teachers. One man told her he had no poetry inside him. She asked him to tell her something he taught his students about Navajo culture. He then described how the months divide the seasons, how the "yellow of summer meets the white of winter." Heard writes of how his colleagues then told him, "That sounds like poetry to me [us]." Surprised he cried, "That's poetry? I thought it had to rhyme." This is one of my favorite chapters in the book because it blasts preconceived expectations about what poetry is. Heard offers a variety of prompts at the ends of the chapters to get one's creativity flowing, and they are very effective, I think. For instance, there are exercises on facing your inner critics, keeping the creative channel open, and discovering original metaphors. This is a book that can be used by people at all levels, from beginners to more experienced and even published writers. It's a very good book for the person who needs inspiration but can't take a writing class.
wonderful writing exercises.......2004-01-24
I used this book in my high school English class, and remembered how helpful this was. I ordered one for myself after I graduated, and now use it to sharpen writing ideas that were stuck in my mind. I am able to get my thoughts down onto paper, and they are more vibrant than what they were in my head. A great read for aspiring writers and poets!
An enjoyable journaling experience........2001-12-09
I purchased this book to help me keep consistent with my journaling. On the days I "drew blank" when I took pen and pad in hand, I read a chapter of this book. I enjoyed the exercises and the experience. I may pull it out again for next year's journal to see what I come up with then.
Discover the Poet in You.......2000-04-27
This must be the most accessible book on how to live and communicate one's life through poetry simultaneously. As a former Georgia Heard (a most gracious educator whose life is her work) student, I can honestly say I have gained so much valuable insight into my own writing and teaching from using this companion (book). It is a must for those "re-visionists"; those who want desperately to communicate experiences and to see these experiences take on new lives of their own. If you enjoy poetry, you should not be without this timeless guide for writing.

No Regrets!.......2001-11-30
I brought this book back from England in the late '80 and it has been the envy of many of my American calligraphy friends ever since. How wonderful that it is now back in print, available and reasonably priced. An inspiration for the beginner but most especially for those who have some background or ambition in this art. The contributors themselves constitute a "Who's Who"
of the late 20th century British calligraphy world. A must have, you will love owning this book for the rest of your life. No regrets!
More Than Fine Writing.......2000-02-21
You HAVE TO read this book! Irene Wellington's works are delightful to look at. Her letters and drawings have a vitality that is sensed even in reproductions. Unlike many books on scribes, calligraphy etc, this publication is a reliable volume; editors of the book are prestigious professionals and this book can make all the difference in the education of any scribe. It is a lasting book, and although I bought this book months ago I find myself going to it constantly. The works are very appealing and refreshing.
