Book Description
Will these companies be long-term winners in the 21st century? Merck-Medco - uses its supposedly burdensome infrastructure to out-perform well financed pure dot-coms in online sales. Eaton Aeroquip - employs new technologies to leverage its long-standing expertise in supply-chain management. Powell's Books - was an online success before Amazon was online at all, with profitability from the outset. Snap-on Inc. - makes its dealers the main focus of digital initiatives, providing gains to stakeholders throughout the value chain. N-Bar Land and Cattle Company - breaks out of traditional commodity-business ruts with innovative use of the Web. Inditex, SA - combines the speed and empowerment enabled by new technologies to make its products consumer sensations. Enron Corporation - examines new technological capabilities as prospective avenues to reach new markets, offer new products, or invent new services. Rosenbluth International - applies technology every way possible to elevate its people from order processors to customer advocates. iSteelAsia.com Ltd. - transforms the historic role of an intermediary to make itself an indispensable provider of added-value services. DoveBid, Inc. - melds its traditional live auctioning and wonders of the Web to produce gains for buyers, sellers, and the company itself. Cemex, SA - employs technology in cement delivery to overcome the once-intractable obstacles of traffic and weather. Antevia Inc. - enhances and extends its personal services by using the Web to succeed as a unique niche player. Charles Schwab Corporation - enjoys unprecedented success because it dropped all distinctions between online and offline customers. Tesco PLC - is the world's sole example of what pure dot-coms and established retailers have failed to become: a profitable online grocer. Office Depot - creates a virtuous cycle of mutual benefits among its store, catalog, and Web sales channels. Quality Transmission Service - demonstrates that no business is too small or too rooted to physical location to win gains from Web presence. Bertelsmann AG - shows that a company's long-standing culture can accommodate digital transformation on the strength of a CEO's persistence. Ford Motor Company - is using the Internet to revolutionize processes and structures little changed for nearly a century. Eastman Chemical Company - provides evidence that size, location, and line of business are no obstacles to determined digital initiatives. General Electric Company - went from digital noncombatant to new economy superstar in barely a year's time.
Customer Reviews:
ENRON Is One of the Dynamos?.......2002-07-10
Seems heavy on the hype from the Internet frenzy that burned out in March 2000. How much credibility is there in a book that champions how "sucessful" Enron has been in exploiting the new economy?
a simple review of magazine articles.......2001-10-09
This book is possibly a light lecture, not really a well thought analysis of new patterns in new economy.
The author simply makes a kind of articles collection and put everything together.
Ther is no sign of interpretation or standpoint. That's all.
You read the book, and in the end you possibly remmebr what you already knew.
Highly Recommended!.......2001-07-31
Old-economy companies weren't supposed to survive the dot-com era, but some of the "dinosaurs" adapted and they're doing quite well, thank you. Accomplished business author David Stauffer profiles 20 old-economy companies that excel at e-business. The usual-suspect behemoths, such as Ford and Bertelsmann, are here, but he also profiles a six-man automobile transmission shop in Arizona, seed stock ranchers in Montana and other less-than-obvious candidates. Stauffer says that every company's path toward e-commerce is unique, but that path is nonetheless generally approved and determined by management. Thus, change is hard to manage without CEO support, even if the CEO dates back to dinosaur days. So if you run a traditional company - with actual assets - and you want to make that difficult evolutionary stride toward e-commerce, we at getAbstract.com suggest that you might find concise instruction here.

Book Description
Alkaloids, represent a group of interesting and complex chemical compounds, produced by the secondary metabolism of living organisms in different biotopes. They are relatively common chemicals in all kingdoms of living organisms in all environments. Two hundred years of scientific research has still not fully explained the connections between alkaloids and life.
Alkaloids-Chemistry, Biological Significance, Applications and Ecological Role provides knowledge on structural typology, biosynthesis and metabolism in relation to recent research work on alkaloids. Considering an organic chemistry approach to alkaloids using biological and ecological explanation. Within the book several questions that persist in this field of research are approached as are some unresearched areas.
The book provides beneficial text for an academic and professional audience and serves as a source of knowledge for anyone who is interested in the fascinating subject of alkaloids. Each chapter features an abstract. Appendices are included, as are a listing of alkaloids, plants containing alkaloids and some basic protocols of alkaloid analysis.
* Presents the ecological role of alkaloids in nature and ecosystems
* Interdisciplinary and reader friendly approach

Book Description
Volume 13 of this series presents five timely reviews of research on alkaloids such as new developments in the chemistry and biology of alkaloids from amphibian skins. It provides a synopsis and tabulation of the hundreds of alkaloids that have been detected, with an emphasis on occurrence, structure, dietary origins, and biological activity.
Alkaloids containing the 1, 2, 3, 3a, 8, 8a - hexahydropyrrolo [2,3b] indole ring system and the cyclotryptamines are discussed. An exhaustive list of available structures is provided. The chemical and biological structures have been evaluated critically so as to identify existing errors and expose irregularities in appearance or biological function. In addition, attention is drawn to the possible implications of the accumulated knowledge related to the synthesis, occurrence, and biochemistry of this class of alkaloids.
Recent work on alkaloids containing the comparatively non – basic pyrrole ring system is summarized. One of the chapters covers isolation, structure elucidation, biological activity, and selected chemical syntheses of certain pyrrole alkaloids.
Recent developments in the chemistry of diterpenoid and norditerpenoid alkaloids occurring in
Aconitum, Delphinium and Consolida genera of the Ranunculaceae family used in Chinese and Indian medicine are surveyed and the book ends with a focus on transition metal – catalyzed carbonylations as efficient and novel approaches to the construction of piperidine, izidine and quinazoline alkaloids, which occur in great numbers in nature.

Sports Nuts.......2007-01-12
The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types by Ray Heitzmann is a great informational book. The book tells about occupations in the athletic department. For example the book describes jobs like physical therapy, coaching, sports communication and much more. This book is more for high school students who want to go into athletics for an occupation. I believe this book is a great book. I choose this book because I want to go into athletics; this book helped me narrow my choices.
The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types reminds me of the lawyers in Inherit the Wind. In Inherit the Wind the lawyers are very successful. For example one of t he charters ran for president three times. I also recommend reading Inherit the Wind.
