Book Description
This book examines the relationship between elites, minorities, and economic growth. The novelty of the book lies in its focus on the interaction between social and economic changes during economic growth. This is an undeveloped subject because it crosses disciplinary lines. The first part of the book contains essays on the role of economic and political elites in America, Europe and the Middle East. The second part of the book contains essays on the role of minorities in past and present industrialization in Europe and Asia. And the final part contains more theoretical approaches that build on the historical essays earlier in the volume.
Elites, Minorities and Economic Growth is particularly useful for macroeconomists interested in economic growth, economic historians, sociologists interested in elites, minorities and social mobility and historians of industrialization and economic growth.

Book Description
Can bacteria be as smart as we are? Can ants think? And fish? Yes, says Frank Vertosick, a neurosurgeon who combats our elitism about intelligence in this brilliant book.
A gifted writer and author of the widely praised Why We Hurt, Vertosick shows us that intelligence--the ability to react to the outside world, to change behavior, and survive-can be found wherever life exists. He demonstrates the keen intelligence of our immune system, how lowly bacteria mutate and outwit antibiotics, and how canny cancer cells elude our natural defenses.
A fascinating journey through worlds of unknown science and an unsettling argument against our valuing of brain intelligence above all else, The Genius Within tells a fascinating scientific story, one that could shake our ethical foundation to its core.
Amazon.com
If we're so smart, why are we still at the mercy of treacherous microorganisms? The Genius Within: Discovering the Intelligence of Every Living Thing asks readers to let go of brain worship and look at the incredible problem-solving skills of viruses, ants, and other lowly creatures. Neurosurgeon Frank T. Vertosick Jr. seems an unlikely candidate to write a book celebrating noncerebral intelligence, but his knowledge helps him draw comparisons that others might miss. The fast-moving genetic intelligence of bacteria and immune systems might not match the precision of digital computers, but they have devised arms races much more complex--and deadly--than our comparatively paltry efforts. Vertosick's grasp of what it means to behave intelligently comes through clearly, even if he is as stumped as anyone trying to define the I word. Exploring parallels between neural networks, insect colonies, and our own brains, he finds common ground and shows that, as far as evolution is concerned, we're not so bright. It's not all bad, though: we're very good at what we do, and Vertosick hopes that we can learn to use our intelligence more wisely. --Rob Lightner
Customer Reviews:
An intelligent look at life.......2006-02-23
"The Genius Within" is a must read for the non-specialist interested in science. It is a thought provoking work; very speculative, but grounded in mainstream scientific fact and theory. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it...twice. It's a bit technical at times, so some familiarity with the science involved is recommended. Also, if you happen to be more interested in "intelligent" animal behavior as such, rather than in its biochemical, microbiological and systemic underpinnings, you may want to look elsewhere.
In this book, the author explores the notion the "networks" underlie the phenomenon we call life, and that life is synonymous with the information processing - intelligence - they architect. We tend to think of intelligence as a unique feature of brains, our conscious ones in particular (he calls this "brain chauvinism"), but he contends that all life is intelligent, or at least as "intelligent as it needs to be", and sets out to prove it.
In simplest terms, he defines intelligence as the ability to solve problems related to survival. This seems to run counter to mainstream evolutionary theory, where the survival of species is basically as matter of, well, "dumb luck". But the author views intelligence as a collective phenomenon firmly embedded within this framework; as an "emergent behavior" of large groups of highly interactive biological entities (Including sub-cellular enzymes) otherwise engaged in a contingency-driven, random struggle for survival. The architecture that endows such groups with "emergent properties" is called, for want of a better word, a "network" by the author.
The details of what the author means by a "network" is closely argued and beyond the scope of this review. In general, a biological "network" is a large collection of "selfish", randomly interacting entities whose components are capable of two or more relatively stable, but reversible, states (more active/less active, faster/slower, stronger/weaker), and whose components can variously enhance or impede each other's status over time, resulting in a collective "energy landscape" patterned by forces impinging on the network. The former allows for basic information storage (the biological equivalent of zeros and ones), and the latter for collective information storage (pattern recognition/memory) concerning the environment, allowing the collective to respond to environmental stimuli in, ultimately, a manner conducive to its survival. Overall, the architecture of a "network" harnesses the random, contingent interactions of its constituents into the directed or, as the author would claim, intelligent actions we associate with life at every level of biological organization.
The author spends much of the book "fleshing out" these and other abstractions, particularly with respects to interacting aggregates composed of things such as cellular enzymes, bacteria and somatic cells, what he calls "party networks" as opposed to "hard wired networks", though he does give ample attention to the latter (he is, after all, a brain surgeon). To assess intelligence from the "outside in", he employs a modified version of the Touring Test throughout these forays. Without making any assumptions about them based on what they are or how they're organized, he queries each system with a problem, and waits for a response. He queries an infectious bacterial species with a new antibiotic and, within months, it develops immunity. He queries the human immune system with the aforementioned bacteria and, within weeks, it develops an effective resistance. In these and other instances, he argues for an "intelligent" response from each based on their participation in network architecture, no more or less effective for the overall survival of its hosts than the quickened responses of "hard wired" brains.
I gave this book a five-star rating, and with good reason, but I'm not entirely in agreement with its conclusions. Although "networking" is arguably a characteristic of all living systems, it seems somewhat disingenuous to define intelligence as the ability to solve problems regardless of the time frame involved. Given enough time and numbers, "dumb luck" will achieve results that appear intelligent, and so will tempt teleological interpretations. Mainstream evolutionists have long had to contend with our compulsion to put a "forger" between the hammers of chance and the anvil of necessity. Like them, I suspect the author's hypothesis, however plausible, is just another in a series of attempts to inject Vitalism into biology, "networks" here replacing the less than scientific musings of an earlier age.
But then again, maybe I'm just a "brain chauvinist".
Good but boring at times.......2004-09-02
This is a relatively good book to read. However, the promise
that the author makes in not being technical is only partically
true. First, he concentrates too much on the medical explanations
that, at times, are not entirely relevant. Second, his analogies
are silly at times particularly when the concept is
already well understood without the analogy. One has to know
that the number of analogies given is not directly proportional
to how clear the concept will become to the reader.
But as I said, this is a good book and if you can live by
the parts of the book that are irrelevant you may learn
something new about the concept of intelligence and how
intelligence can be observed in seemingly "dumb" things.
Life is more then a Blind Algorithmic Process.......2003-11-15
Though Vertosick does not focus on the more technical and strictly academic foundations of his major thesis (life=intelligence), he does a beautiful job of using analogies and metaphors to describe how even a cell can exhibit "intelligent" behaviour. This book should be required reading for anyone who is remotely interested in biology, or anything to do with nature. Vertosick is able to successfully synthesize a completely different, yet strongly persuasive argument for the basis of life itself. He admits that his thesis may be flawed, but personally I think that most of his points are well thought out and strongly supported. This is one of the most interesting books on life and intelligence I have ever read.
Simply wonderful.......2003-11-08
As easy to read as a novel and just as enjoyable, it will forever change the way you see the world around you. It is one of those rare books that links together a number of more or less well known ideas and arrives at an extraordinary and inescapable set of conclusions. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
An Ode to Creativity (aka "emergent properties").......2003-07-18
If you want to know why Darwin might be "needlessy nihilistic" and what is at the core of Vertosick's carefully built case to explain--nothing less than--the possisble meaning of everything, then check this out. I thought the beginning was a little tedious, but the pay-off for hanging in there with his carefully crafted case was well worth it. I've bought several copies to share with friends and have had many lively debates. Thanks Dr. Vertosick for your emergent property--it's marvelous!
Book Description
You love to backpack, but you can only get out on the trail a few weekends a year. This book was written for you. It is the first guide to cover the length of the Appalachian Trail in a single volume. It doesn't describe every mile of the trail, but offers detailed descriptions of the suggested hikes. Why sort through guidebooks looking for a good hike, when the best of the Appalachian Trail is all here in one book. Includes overnight hikes in all fourteen states the Appalachian Trail passes through.
Customer Reviews:
Great Books!.......2004-07-08
Just bought this and Best of the AT Day Hikes and am really enjoying them. I know I will never hike the whole trail, but these two books give me the best that the Appalachian Trail has to offer without having to hike evey inch of it. The books are well-organized and you can glean a lot of information at a glance; later you can go back and get the specifics of the hikes. This is edition has been a major revision of the first edition with more than a third of the hikes being brand new and all of the hike information--length, difficulty, trail route, driving directions, etc.--updated. I (and you will too) will be making great use of them.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing!.......2006-10-20
You need to be either a linguist or an ultra-hard-core fan to appreciate this book. Not being a linguist, some of the technical aspects are beyond me but still, what an amazing work; not only by Salo but by Tolkien. The short section with the "historical" background of Sindarin was fascinating; a nice summary. I had no idea that Tolkien had made his languages so complicated. A fascinating glimpse into Tolkien's mind.
For fifty bucks I should get a dust jacket.......2006-09-12
The book is what I expected it to be, a reference written by someone who has studied some of Tolkien's writings on language, best used in conjunction with other reference materials if used to learn to compose writings in the language of the elves. Other reviews that have bashed the book sound like sour grapes wallowers. Tolkien was the only expert on the languages of Middle Earth and anyone who claims otherwise is suspect.
True Sindarin study.......2006-03-02
This book is NOT for those who simply want to learn phrases and so on. Being a student of linguistics, and having a professor whose work is used as the official linguistic analysis in an area of Papua New Guinea, I can say with honesty that David Salo's work is the real deal. I showed this to my professor, and he was completely impressed (a feat in and of itself).
Reading Gateway is not casual; it takes some concentration. I suppose that, if one just wanted Elvish texts, it could be used. I was quite pleased to find him using the IPA in words, as I had wished for that since first finding Lord of the Rings.
The historical chart of the emergence of Sindarin better explains some of the material in The Silmarillion, and the overall historical prose explanation of the development of the different phases of Elvish was most helpful.
I would definitely recommend this to any Tolkien fans that happen to be linguists as well. A majority of fans would not understand, but it is a fascinating read nonetheless.
Excellent.......2006-02-23
This book is amazing, but be certain that you're the right audience.
This is a college-level textbook, and make no mistake about that. It is a very academic and thoroughly researched treatment of Sindarin. If you're looking for "Conversational Sindarin for Fun and Profit", this book is not it. Only buy it if you really have a deep interest in Tolkien's constructed languages. Having said that, it's worth every penny. I haven't seen this much detailed information on Sindarin anywhere else.
Sindarin Language Help.......2006-02-01
This is a very helpful text for the new student of Sindarin, one of J R R Tolkien's Elvish languages. In addition to grammar lessons, there are English-Sindarin Glossaries and a great history of the language. This is a written language, not generally meant ot be spoken and I am able after two months study to write simple sentences.
The book is hard back and stands up to daily use very well.

In today's ultra-competitive commercial climate, the businesses that truly succeed are the businesses that really stand out.
Nichecraft: Using Your Specialness to Focus Your Business, Corner Your Market, and Make Customers Seek You Out, is author and consultant Dr. Lynda Falkenstein's blueprint for differentiating a product or service from the competition and then parlaying its unique position into long-term success. The practical nine-step guide includes plenty of actual examples along with numerous exercises and worksheets.
Book Description
Every company and individual is aware, often painfully, of how crowded and competitive their field of business has become. It's not enough to be just the first nor even the best: no single company can own a good idea for too long because eventually someone else will find out that they, too, can make money by offering the same thing. Now everyone from one-person business-owners to heads of Fortune 500 companies are asking themselves, "How can I continue to stand out from the competition in the midst of all this change?"
In this completely updated, newest edition of her internationally acclaimed book, Nichecraft: Using Your Specialness to Focus Your Business, Corner Your Market, and Make Customers Seek You Out, Dr. Lynda C. Falkenstein has provided an answer for anyone who has something to sell. Dr. Falkenstein explains the theory and strategies of nichecrafting, and why, in a climate of razor sharp competition, the pursuit of excellence is simply not enough. The only goal worth pursuing is making yourself and your product perceived as special.
Nichecraft, however, is more than just a description of yet another theory on how to build a successful business: it is a step-by-step practical guide to putting into practice what Falkenstein preaches. Nichecraft transcends its field, just as she teaches the reader to do, by offering far more than a summary of nichecrafting and showing examples of how others have successfully put her strategy to use. She provides a simple-to-follow, nine-step blueprint for identifying and developing a niche and using it to sell your product or service. The hands-on approach is emphasized with worksheets and exercises to help readers develop their nichecrafting abilities.
While incorporating the best of her first edition, this millennium edition Nichecraft includes an entirely new chapter titled "Making Your Niche Rich on the Net." Here Dr. Falkenstein offers even more practical tips how to use the internet as a strategic tool in defining and making a lucrative niche.
Customer Reviews:
One for the shelf of consultants & business owners alike!.......2004-09-11
On the whole, this book is top-notch. It brings together a number of common-sensical ideas and concepts that are extremely useful in focusing a business on what it does best. There is room for improvement in how the material is presented though, that would help the book's readability and usability. Dr. Falkenstein has put together some great material! I look forward to more!
Smug rather than supportive.......2003-06-08
There are way too many negative examples in this book - case studies of what stupid or weak-willed people did wrong, in the author's opinion. She does have a lot of insight into how to build a niche, but she delivers her knowledge with a sharp-edged know-it-all attitude that I could not take after a while. Despite being a marketing consultant who wanted to recommend this book to clients, I could not finish reading the book, I found it so offensive in tone.

Brilliant. Loved it. Ordered copies for the whole company........2001-03-22
Over the years I've collected and read just about every book on marketing and building businesses that is on the market. Some have been very good. Nichecraft, however, is far and away the most insightful and innovative book of its kind I've ever run across. If I'd had this book when I started my business 15 years ago, it would have saved me a fortune in lost time and wasted efforts. One of the best things about this book is its practical step-by-step approach. Dr. Falkenstein lays out her nine-step process clearly and with great style. Her experience comes through loudly and clearly. Although I am a professional photographer and am applying Nichecraft's principles to my own specific business, I can see that it would be invaluable for any business in today's environment. It is so good, I ordered copies for everyone in my company.
Please, do NOT buy this book........2001-02-07
If you're like me, you own a business and are trying to learn more to make yourself successful. Although I have found a few worthwhile books, "Nichecraft" is not one of them. By page 21 I had encountered so many spelling, grammatical, and punctuation errors, I had to turn to the front to see what publisher let this one get out. I was not surprised to learn that the book was published by the author herself. Even the cover has a spelling error.
If you can get past the poor writing, you will find it bereft of substance. The book reads like a 3AM infomercial: full of excitement, buzzwords, and promises but offering little help. The examples contain no real insight, the myriad steps are repetitious, contradictory, and are often so poorly written I cannot decipher them after three readings. Several of the graphics only serve to further confuse the text.
We are all looking for books that can help us make sense of marketing. This is not one of them. I beg you to spare yourself this waste of time. I rate this book 1 Star because it is the lowest rating available.

Book Description
This book offers a balanced and pragmatic view of the problems associated with international migration. It assembles contributions from two teams of leading scholars in the field. Part One presents the contribution of the first team which is focused on Europe. Part Two is devoted to the contribution of the second team which draws entirely on the US experience. The two parts of the volume are self-contained and complementary in that they take a different theoretical and empirical perspective. For instance, Part One delves more deeply into the consequences of allowing migrants to have free access to the generous welfare state of European countries, whilst Part Two has more to say on policies repressing illegal migration as there is much more evidence of this in the US than in Europe. Much can be learned by comparing the findings of the two parts and in trying to interpret the asymmetries between Europe and the US in migration policies and perceptions of public opinion on this phenomenon. The comments on the two parts by Giuseppe Bertola, George Borjas, Michael Burda, and Riccardo Faini, as well as the final remarks by Olivier Blanchard, Dani Rodrik and Giovanni Sartori, offer additional insights in this respect.

Book Description
The need for a new architecture arises because contemporary crises are very different from traditional balance of payments problems. Developing countries are especially vulnerable because of their special characteristics. The emphasis of this report is on crisis prevention, but crisis resolution is also covered. Dr Ahluwalia argues that public resources must be used sparingly and only with strong conditionality. There must be greater incentives to involve the private sector, and mechanisms to ensure that imprudent creditors bear part of the burden. The report also proposes a governance structure involving an overarching ministerial group, including representatives from different groups of developing countries, which would look at global economic issues including the functioning of private markets and systemic issues. Such a group would go well beyond the newly constituted GX group announced at the Annual Meetings of the IMF and The World Bank.
