Book Description

Arguing that Americans should turn to private entrepreneurs rather than the federal government to guarantee the protection and improvement of environmental quality, the authors document numerous examples of how entrepreneurs have satisfied the growing demand for environmental quality. Beginning with historical cases from the turn of the century, they illuminate the benefits of entrepreneurial participation in wildlife preservation, aquatic habitat production, and environmentally friendly housing development. As government budgets shrink and more people question the efficacy of government regulations, "Enviro-Capitalists" offers alternatives to traditional thinking about the environment. While the book does not claim that the private sector can provide solutions to all environmental problems, it offers innovative ideas that will cultivate and encourage environmental entrepreneurship.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Faith based enviromentalism........2004-01-17

This is a faith based environmentalism - that is you must believe in the 'idea' of the free market for it to work. And sorry to say, that faith has been tested and found wanting. Just in the past few years - nay decades - we have seen various ways in which the 'free market' has been co-opted and corrupted - from the S&L scandal. energy de-reg, to the various post-bubble stock market scandals. And now the authors want to place our natural resources into the hands of the free market?
No thank you sirs.
Better laws and total reviews of suspect agencies like the BLM and Army Corp. than this so called 'free market.'

5 out of 5 stars Economy and Ecology in Harmony.......2000-04-18

Enviro-Capitalists is a must-read for anybody interested in both business and the environment. Anderson and Leal give plenty of examples to back up their thesis that economy and ecology can produce positive synergies. 'Doing good while doing well' has been an inspiration to me.---Ben Harkema

4 out of 5 stars George Washington Carver.......2005-10-30

Dr. George Washington Carver Scientist was a great book , that told stories of Georges mother was a slave stolen in the night, and how Dr. Carver was a small, sick baby. Much of his life that's all George was, small and frail. He was not that strong and could not help out in the fields, but was excellent at helping around the house and growing things. As an adult Dr.carver was honored with many awards and was invited to make speeches and visit many colleges. He was a very intelligent man and seldom met people who understood him and "saw" as he did, with Father God and Mother Nature. This book explains thoroughly and interestingly about Dr. Carver's life, it is worthy of Edgar Allen Poe.

This book keeps you guessing, you never know what Dr.Carver might say, or be researching next. First he could be researching peanuts next he could be discovering paints and dyes. One time he was trying to find another use for peanuts when he heard the breakfast bell it made him think of a coffee creamer made from peanuts! His first attempt failed, but soon he made an equal alternate to grade "A" coffee creamer. Once when he was researching soy beans he discovered plastics that hi close friend, Henry Ford, used in his most famous invention, the automobile.

This book shared many facts about Dr.Carver's life. The book told of how Dr.Carver was sent to find "his place in the world" at about age ten. The book tells how George discovered over one hundred uses for the peanut and of his great speech making. It also tells of how Dr. Carver stayed in Tuskegee, Alabama, out of loyalty to his friend, Booker T. Washington, for most of his life. He worked in Tuskegee transforming it into a place that thrived with healthy humans, crops, and flowers.

This book really shows the nobility of Dr.Carver. No matter who he met Dr. Carver seemed to amaze them. Dr. Carver didn't need money, he still had check from the year 1915 in the year 1925! He amazed the people of Tuskegee when he showed them how to plant then renew their soil by planting different crops. He also impressed the people with his cures for pains, colds, and plant problems.

This book is very worthy of Edgar Allen Poe because it is very exciting and informative. Dr. Carver had many goals in life, a number of which he achieved. He was a great scientist whose question toward God and nature never ceased.

                          Book Description

Physiological Systems of Insects is designed to emphasize classical material such as the structure and function of insect organ systems. In addition, the book supplements classical material with insights into insect biology achieved through studies of insect molecular biology, neuroendocrinology, biochemistry, and genetics. Throughout the book there is an effort to lay the experimental foundation upon which studies of insect physiology are based. Students, faculty, and researchers who need a summary of the patterns and processes regulated by physiological systems will want this book.

                                        Book Description

This bestselling pocket-sized racing rules book has been fully revised for this edition. The entire 2005-2008 racing rules are included. In revising The Rules Book to take account of the rule changes, Bryan Willis has maintained Eric Twiname's unique method of presentation, which has proved popular with racers over many editions.

The Rules Book is unique in that it assumes a race situation and then looks at the rules that apply, instead of examining the rules in turn and discussing which situations govern. The reader works his way around the course from the Start, to the Windward Mark, Downwind Legs, to the Finish, studying all the situations that might arise. USSA and ISAF appeal case numbers are given for further reference.

The information is graded on 3 levels: ¥ Club: rules which everyone who races should know (no symbol) ¥ National: rules for top club racing (1 hull symbol) ¥ International: rules for top national and international competition (2 hull symbols)

4 out of 5 stars A great sailboat racing rules book, with practical examples.......2006-02-01

I liked the way the book is organized exactly how a race is organized - rules related to the pre-start and start are presented first, then rules related to upwind sailing and tacking, followed by rules related to rounding the windward mark. Next, there are rules about off-wind sailing and gybing, and rounding the offwind mark, followed by rules related to finishing.

In each instance, the book shows easy-to-understand diagrams of real racing situations, and shows which rules apply. You don't have to read the entire book or even entire passages to get a useful chunk of rules information- each situation illustrated can be understood in a few minutes max. I find myself picking up the book for a quick look when I have a question about a specific race situation, and it delivers the info I need quickly and clearly.

My complaint about the book is that it does not seem especially durable, since a few pages of my copy became unglued at the binding within days of my starting to use the book - not a great start for a book that is likely to find it's way into the duffle bag of a racing sailors.

Other that that minor quibble I found this book to be an excellent, complete, easy-to-understand reference for the racing rules of sailing through 2008.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved me from a web of confusion.......2005-05-11

During my first undergraduate sociology topic, I became confused by all the unfamiliar terms I was encountering in the readings. This dictionary saved me from a web of confusion by clearly defining each term.

The terms are explicitly explained and differentiated from each other. This sort of description is hard to come by in sociological literature.

It also acknowledges the relationship between terms by recommending other terms to refer to. Below many definitions, there are even references to readings if you want more information on the topic.

While the definitions are restricted to explain only the given term, they are also detailed enough to give a good understanding of the meaning and context of the term. Most terms are explained in a paragraph or two, while more important and complex terms or phrases are explained with more information, often in one or two pages.

If you want explicit descriptions of terms that we don't often encounter outside of sociology, or of terms that have a different meaning within sociology, this book will definitely help you. You will be able to write your papers more confidently knowing that you fully understand the sociological concepts.

Even though I no longer study sociology, I am happy to see this dictionary still resting on my bookshelf because I remember what a great help it was.

This is a great dictionary, but how much information do you really think fits into such a small book? I found it useful for my purposes as an undergraduate student, but I'd personally like to own one of those big fancy sociological dictionaries.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Guide.......2001-07-06

For any student of sociology, this is a welcomed addition to textbooks. The dictionary is also a good addition to the library of someone who just enjoys reading sociology books. It has a bit of a British flair because of its authors, but is really a well-rounded and insightful reference book.

4 out of 5 stars Perspective From an Instructor.......2000-08-17

While there are other dictionaries out there that do a better job, for the price of this dictionary it is a great reference for Introduction to Sociology students. Definitions range from a few words to a couple of pages. Usually gives a reference to an author connected to the term and other concepts that might be important to the term. Still there are key concepts missing (for instance a definition of methodology) that make this book problematic. This book is not written from a particular standpoint, but at times the definitions are classical.

The most up-to-date and authoritative introduction to critical theory available, this acclaimed dictionary provides an ideal overview of the full range of theories, schools of thought, and theorists. Whether it's Arendt or Woolf, object relations or orientalism, postcolonial theory or postmodernism, readers will find incisive entries on the work of key figures, powerful summaries of the crucial debates, and clear explanations of both the links and differences between the various thinkers and schools.

"Remarkable for its comprehensiveness. . . . It is certainly a reference work I will want to have on my own shelves." (David Lodge)

A DICTIONARY OF CRITICAL THEORY by David Macey is one of those books that ought to be held in one hand while the other holds another text on literary theory. It is no easy task to succinctly summarize let alone analyze an imposingly long list of terms, writers, movements, and schools of critical thought, but Macey has come close. Assume that a reader is about to try to plow his way through the denseness that is the thought of Lacan. As a preliminary, that reader would be wise first to read the general background to Lacanian thought before navigating a way between Lacan's distinctions between the Real and the Imaginary stages of infantile growth. Or perhaps that reader feels a lack of understanding of Freud's oedipal issues. Macey is where to begin.

Macey's text is arranged alphabetically, as any proper dictionary should be, but this text is more encyclopedia than dictionary. Part of the not-so-obvious problem I have with Macey is the same that I have with any author who seeks to encapsulate all the knowledge of the world on one issue in one book. The question of authorial bias manifests itself not only in what is included or excluded, but also in the even-handedness of its treatment. Macey tends to smooth over any areas of political controversy that arise all too often in a discourse that is fraught with potential conflict. For example, as I was reading the entry on Noam Chomsky, the MIT linguist who has for years been an outspoken critic of both the United States and Israel, hardly anything was written that might cast an aspersion on Chomsky's own biases. What was presented was a rather technical explanation of Chomsky's linguistic theories, a matter of concern only to other linguists. I was surprised by Macey's omission of Frederick Jameson, one of the most outspoken Marxist critics of this century. Still, Macey's text is an indispensable tool for those who wish to learn how words affect ideas.

Yes and no. For some time, I have referred to the Penguin Dictionary of Philosophy. This I have found to be particularly helpful. I thought I might find the same with the Penguin Dictionary of Critical Theory. But first, what is critical theory? While there are several possible definitions, perhaps the following would make most sense. Scientific theory, in whatever field, uses "instrumental reason" for the purpose of "manipulating the external world". Critical theory might be said to be theory which examines the instrumental reason itself.

The Dictionary of Critical Theory is strong from the point of view that it is broad in the information it provides. It sketches e.g. both the origins and the outcomes of metaphysics, or both the early and the late work of Jacques Derrida -- and it gives one a good feel for the mood among academics, and for caveats one should be aware of. It is strong from the point of view that it succeeds in reducing vast and complex subject matter to concise and manageable entries -- and it is generally up to date. It also has a very useful bibliography at the back (80 pages).

I would consider it weak from the point of view that it is not as comprehensive as it might be. I looked up "systems theory". Nothing. I looked up "axioms", "coherentism", "Michael Polanyi". There was nothing -- where there might have been, at least, a single-line cross-reference. I would also consider it weak from the point of view that it sometimes seems too technical to be useful. For instance, I looked up "metalanguage". This, it says, is "a technical or second-order language used to describe and analyse a natural or first-order language". A dictionary, surely, is intended to be more explicatory than that.

The book is useful -- and I would rather have it than not. This is the first impression in paperback, and hopefully future editions would overcome some of the present shortcomings.

Alan Axelrod and Harry Oster have done a great service to the folklorists of the world. Their Dictionary of American Folklore--an encyclopedic compilation of 750 entries enhanced by 228 photographs and drawings--honors, defines, and explains the many components that make up the patchwork quilt of American folklore. And for every subject they treat, they provide a thorough picture, from all angles. Take music, for example. Axelrod and Oster include musicians such as Elvis, Stephen Foster, Bessie Smith, and Burl Ives; specific songs such as "I Gave My Love a Cherry," and "Shenandoah"; music genres such as jazz, blues, rap, and, naturally, folk music; and instruments such as the harmonica and the fiddle.

In addition to music, there are entries on history, politics, economy, and civil movements. Numerous pages are devoted to Abraham Lincoln, and there are biographies for Joe Hill, Eliot Ness, Crazy Horse, and Henry Ford, as well. The Dictionary discusses graffiti, ghost stories, and Ouiji boards, architectural trends such as Colonial Revival, and a variety of humor genres, from tall tales and playing the Dirty Dozens to telling Dumb Dora and Little Willie jokes. There are entries for painters, such as Norman Rockwell; dancers, such as Martha Graham; and crafts, including passages on quilts and tattoos. And there are sports figures (Yogi Berra's sayings get a full treatment), and writers, too, such as Zora Neale Hurston, Herman Melville, and H.L. Mencken.

The A-to-Z design enables fast access if you know what you want to look up, but it also provides seemingly endless opportunities for happy browsing. Open to the M's and you'll find Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Mouse, and midwives. Skip back to the J's and there's the jitterbug, John Henry, and Juneteenth. Tailor-made for folklorists, historians, and American Studies students, The Folklore Dictionary is a boon to anyone with browsing time to spare. --Stephanie Gold

                                        Book Description

An engrossing and generously illustrated journey through the popular legacy of our nation

The Penguin Dictionary of American Folklore will appeal to a vast range of readers in addition to folklorists. Here is a stimulating companion and authoritative resource for students of American literature, history, and cultural studies--from adolescents to centenarians--and for anyone lured by the highways and byways of our country's traditions. Entries range from brief definitions to essays (with suggested further readings) on such topics as folklore heroes (real and mythical); music; rural tales of weather and vampires; modern urban legends; and much, much more. This is a comprehensive, absorbing reference of a kind never before available.

2 out of 5 stars Random, interesting, and sometimes disappointing.......2003-12-31

The book provides the opportunity to enjoy an hour or two grazing from one reference to another, if you are prepared to be ocassionally perplexed or annoyed. Many of the descriptions were quite good. I was surprised by many of the things included, and disappointed by things that were omitted.

I was also disheartened by the PC'ness that infected much of the book, but I guess something to be expected on such an academic subject. As an example, their determination that "Pollack jokes" were ethnically offensive, is an interesting judgment, in a book that I am sure is intended to be "non-judgmental." Another example, the inclusion of "Gay folklore" and "AIDS Tales" two subjects whose place in this survey seem dubious, especially when one realizes some of the items that have been left out. (Definitions for "Horatio Alger" stories, the Great Gatsby, Moby Dick, Fitzgerald, or Faulkner were apparently omitted so that suitable space could be devoted for such influential subjects as "Gay folklore" I am sure.)

My final example of their PC'ness is that they include (and apparently dismiss) under "Conspiracy lore" the fact that some people saw communism "plotting against the United States government" in the 1950s as a belief on par with such wacky conspiracy theories as UFOs, Hollow Earth, and secret societies such as the Illuminati and the Tri-Lateral Commission running the world. Can anyone beside academics really argue that communists were not plotting against our government?

I also have questions about the depth of their research. As an example, their review of military lore was amusing, though I wonder how much of it they got from watching "Full Metal Jacket" or old WW II movies, rather than speaking to actual veterans and asking them to relate their folklore.

Overall, not a book I would recommend rushing out to buy.

This book would be an appropriate gift for foreigners who have just recently been granted American citizenship; it includes many people, places and things which are important to American cultural history, and the reading level is not difficult. If you were born and raised in the USA, this book will be a pleasant trip down memory lane. Most of the "places and things" entries were familiar to me, but there were countless "people" entries that I had never even heard of. Unfortunately, the photographic illustrations are of poor quality.

                                                    Book Description

Come meet the man you have known for all of your life! You may not know Ub Iwerks by name, but you certainly know his accomplishments. Walt Disney's friend, partner, adversary and alter ego all rolled into one, Iwerks was responsible for creating Mickey Mouse, adding color, sound and 3-dimensionality to cartoons and basically revolutionizing live-action films with his inventions, innovations and sheer brilliance.

Without Ub Iwerks, we would not have the joy of seeing Donald Duck dancing with Aurora Miranda, Hayley Mills singing with herself or the Birds terrorizing Tippi Hedren in Alfred Hitchcock's masterwork. Without Ub Iwerks, we could not have experienced the thrill of the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean or Circlevision to the same extent. Without Ub Iwerks, we could not have the technology available to allow the current generations of filmmakers -- people like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg -- to create worlds and effects that are truly unbelievable.

Ub Iwerks' creations are legendary, but in The Hand Behind the Mouse, we get to see for the first time, the intimate and personal story of the man himself -- Ub Iwerks.

                                                    5 out of 5 stars a great biography, a better story........2003-05-11

Who's heard of Ub Iwerks? Not me before I read this book. After reading it I found out what most people who know anything about animation history already knew. Ub came up with the character design and early personality for Mickey Mouse. But there is more to this book than that. Its a great story about 2 artists with different strengths who met at a Kansas City Ad Agency before anyone even knew what animation really was. Together they started an failed at many things (at one point the broke and out of work Walt Disney LIVED at Ub's house). After being burned more than once (even by each other!) anyone would have understood if either of these two would have given up and moved into another industry. Thank goodness for us they didn't.

If I had the cash I would option this book for a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Can I please have some more?.......2002-12-17

I read this book over three months ago and am still thinking about it and still longing for more. This biography of Ub Iwerks, the orginal creator of Mickey Mouse, is a must read for any Disney fan or fan of animation and its history. This book details Iwerks relationship with Walt Disney, their falling out and subsequent re-union. Iwerks' contributions to animation and other genres of film are large and should not be forgotten. Iwerks had a hand in all phases of Disney (and other studios') production from animation to live action to work within the themeparks. I look forward to purchasing the VHS that accompanies this book so I can catch a glimpse of some of his early work on film and have already purchased Disney Treasures "Mickey Mouse in Black & White" so I can see all of the old black and white shorts that are described in this book. A good book sparks your interest in other things and this book has done an excellent job of making me want more, more, more.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and enjoyable.......2002-09-20

This is a very good book for anyone that is interested in the history of animation in general or in the Disney Company history specifically. Books written about Walt Disney or the Disney Company don't give enough credit to this very talented man and this book fills in many of the gaps I see in current texts on the history of animation and the Disney Company.

This book is written in a very casual style that helps to make it a very easy read. However, I found the numerous superlative descriptions of Ub's talents to be somewhat tiresome after a while. There is no doubt in my mind about Ub Iwerks' talent and I don't want to take away from that, but it seemed the authors may have gone a little overboard with the adjectives. But then you can probably forgive a little over enthusiasm from Ub Iwerks' granddaughter.

I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in animation or the Disney Company's history.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting for Disney historians..........2001-10-15

If you are into Disney history - this is a must have.
It's not a 'big' book, and doesn't have many pictures - but it's the text that counts - and you can see the 'missing' pictures in many other - pictorial Disney - books.

If only the video was bundled with it...

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about an extremely talented guy........2001-08-13

This was a wonderful book for me to read. In fact, I read it cover to cover the first evening that I had it. It is very informative, and answers alot of questions that I had about Ub Iwerks. I had heard and read alot of stories about him, many filled with alot of contradictions. This book put those contradictions to rest. Ub's relationship with the Disneys was not a strained one, after he returned to the Disney Studio. In fact, he was a lifelong friend of both Walt and Roy. I knew of his work with optical printers and matte photography, but was not aware of all the technical work that he did for Disneyland and Walt Disney World. All in all, a great book. A must for any classic Disney animation fan.
