As consumers, farm women bargained with peddlers at their backdoors. A key business for many farm women was the "butter and egg trade"--small-scale dairying and raising chickens. Their earnings provided a crucial margin of economic safety for many families during the 1920s and 1930s and offered women some independence from their men folks. These innovative women showed that poultry production paid off and laid the foundation for the agribusiness poultry industry that emerged after World War II. Jones also examines the relationships between farm women and home demonstration agents and the effect of government-sponsored rural reform. She discusses the professional culture that developed among white agents as they reconciled new and old ideas about women's roles and shows that black agents, despite prejudice, linked their clients to valuable government resources and gave new meanings to traditions of self-help, mutual aid, and racial uplift.
This book examines the current state of South African agriculture and makes attempts at reform in context by looking at the past. It begins by explaining the historical process, which led to a dualistic agricultural sector, and the current policy process that attempts to resolve the inequalities and distortions. The policy discussion draws on the main part of the book, which is an empirical investigation of the measurement and explanation of efficiency and productivity change, which depend on technologies developed by R & D.
Recent, stunning discoveries suggest that natural selection affects not only physical characteristics but also mental processes, from learning to substance abuse. Michael S. Gazzaniga reveals that just as the environment selects those organisms most likely to survive, within the brain the environment selects pre-existing capacities from a massive inventory of possibilities.

I've used this book in class, together with A New Arabic Grammar of the Written Language by Haywood & Nahmad as a reference. I've finished the book.
Schulz does contain a lot of information, and you can go along way with it. But it's not very pedagogical, and even with a teacher to explain things, I did not find it satisfying. Haywood & Nahmad, even tough it is much older, is easier to read and does explain the arabic language in a way Schulz does not. I have the feeling Schulz states facts to be memorized rather than explain the working of the language.
I dare say I have a good understanding of grammar in general, but despite this some parts in Schulz where very hard to understand, even though the subjects weren't difficult.
And the key to the exercises is ridiculously bad.
I don't know the other books out there, but if you're going to use Schulz, I suggest you get an additional grammar-book. It'll make things much easier.
Arabic for a novice.......2007-04-02
I think this is an excellent and comprehensive learning tool for novices to the arabic language, to the point it has been recommended in our italian class for Arabic beginners. I would only recommend, pronounciation being one of the difficulties of Arabic for westerners, to add a CD with vocal examples and exercises.

the book is one of the better books i have used to try to learn arabic, and it actually oes help me learn arabic better i feel confident that with this book and the next i will be able to speak and write arabic. maybe you should offer the cassettes with the purchase for the book. some of us are sick and can not always make it to the instructor, but my zest for learning is there thank you noor alsayed

Standard Arabic Audio Cassette Set: An Elementary-Intermediate Course
by Eckehard Schulz is an excellent learning resource for anyone who wants to learn the modern media arabic . The native speakers really have done a good job. there are many examples of aural speech in native arabic in different situations. I would recommend the book as well as this audio set . You must buy both to benefit properly from this resource.The advanced course (by other author) is also great and takes the language to another level.
What classrooms should be using.......2007-02-12
This is a 5-star book, but basically all that means is it's the best on the market for general needs. This has been adapated from a German text, and the perfect Arabic textbook for English speakers doesn't appear to exist yet, but Standard is very close. Follow it up with the advanced version in the series (mostly texts but very good selections). This is what classrooms should be using, most opt for either the Big Orange Book or Al-kitaab fii Ta'allum Al-'Arabiyya. With a teacher, this book is better than either.
Moreover Standard Arabic is most likely the best tool for self-study out there, and this is the context in which I've used it. However I recommend the reader have some exposure to arabic beforehand, especially with script as Standard's biggest shortcoming is a lack of transliteration (which has created ambiguities such as whether a waaw is to be read as a consonant or a vowel)
This is NOT a straight grammar, and there are probably better reference texts for MSA out there, however one of the appendices is devoted to 47-pages of paradigms, and there are comprehensive subject indices in Arabic and English but you will have to do a lot of flipping.
The only audio available with this book is cassettes (unless there is a new edition somewhere). This is simply a very concice lesson book in the modern style of language teaching.
For self-study, Al-Kitab will get you there (books 1 and 2), however the only advantage are the DVDs, and the Advanced Standard goes places the second Al-Kitab doesn't. Also Al-Kitab gets far more revisions so it is possible it will be improved, at the moment Standard is much more complete, contains more excercies, and is half the price.
For self-study there are several places to begin before using the Standard, namely:
J.R. Smart's Arabic from the Teach Yourself Series
An Introduction to Modern Arabic by Ziadeh/Winder from Dover
Mastering Arabic from Hippocrene (this is really a introductory course and Hippocrene's 'Beginning Arabic' is useful only for the 60 pages of Arabic literature for the very advanced student and the inclusion of F.E. Sommer's 'The Arabic Writing in Five Lessons with a Key' which is still the best short introduction to the script for the absolute beginner)
Or of course Book I of Al-Kitab, but both Standard Books are half the price of both Al-Kitab books
In summation I recommend the Elementary-Intermediate SA book for the following reasons:
1) It is a far better course book than Al-Kitab except for the added multimedia that Al-Kitab brings; and both are better than the Orange Books
2) For self-study it is comparatively more complete and up-to-date than anything from Dover, Hippocrene, or TY
3) The vocabulary lists are extensive
4) There are more excercises than in any other Arabic Textbook I've seen
5) Correct grammatical terms are used throughout - AND are given in Arabic and referred to as such throughout, so if one has a problem an Arabic speaker will immediately understand what one is asking
6) The Advanced SA follow-up is the furthest text in subject matter for English speakers
7) Very durable paper and a larger type-setting for Arabic characters than many other texts
Caveat: Other viewers have described this text as "dry" as there are very few pictures taking up space and there is a good deal of political and economic subject matter in the excercises and word choices; however, I can guarantee no text exists with both a complete treatment of the language AND pictures on every page, nor is likely to ever be published in English. Also the glossary is only Arabic-English and is ordered by roots (but this is also the case with the best Arabic-English dictionary by Hans Wehr, which should complement SA, though its own glossary is self-contained) Remember this is MSA, and though many colloquialisms are included it is understood that many conversations will be in dialect and require exposure from some other source.

Better yet, don't pay for it at all. Get it free if you can (like borrowing it from the library). To highlight the problems other readers have mentioned:
1. "The Drawings are Not too Good". Unevenly portioned faces and bodies. Seems more amateur than professional.
2. "COPIC. BUY COPIC. COPIC is best." Argh.
3. A combination of 1 and 2 distracts from what the book is trying to teach.
If airbrushing is totally new to you, then this certainly won't hurt, but it won't help much either.

The tutorials are very easy to follow going in a step-by-step manner from original pencil drawing to fully-colored finished image. All the instructions are in color which allows for easier visual than black and white. There were surprisingly a good amount of other handy tips you can use for other purposes such as the tracing down technique for those without a lightbox, using origami paper as part of the image, and using a cotton swab to hold down the paper while you're airbrushing.
This is more of a book on how to color your pin-ups or manga covers than anything. Considering the materials used in this book are markers, airbrushes, brush, colored pencils, pastels, and an etching knife, this book is for the more intermediate and advanced artists.
Aside from the fact that this is basically one big ad for COPIC markers and airbrush, you can apply the techniques you learn in here with other more readily available and less expensive products.
For those that are hypersensitive to anything that has nudity on it, there are two images that may make you want to avoid this volume. One is a female sleeping on her side and wearing a buttoned down shirt and underwear showing quite a bit of her right chest, and the other has no clothing but hides her chest with her hands.

I borrowed this book from a classmate for a day, and i really liked it. It doesn't have pictures of naked people, but it has 2 somewhat disturbing pictures. it may seem like a huge advertising gimmick for copic, but it does give you useful information, like how to use an airbrush, how to gradate colors,mixing marker, colored pencil, and pastel colors, and tips on types paper and inks. the art seemed ugly sometimes but I tried to look over that. the guide character that appeared throughout the book looked as if the proportions were messed up; her boobs were too big, her legs too short, and she looked overall like a 7 year old.
but thats ok.
I liked the book. ^_^

When I got this book I stupidly ignored the cover and bought it based on the content it promised and the little bit of content I saw while flipping through it. And there really is some useful and worthy information in this book.
But I hate it.
I hate the fact that we are taken through this book page after page by a preternaturally perky character that looks like a hydrocephalic five-year-old with big, BIG boobs.
I hate the fact that almost every drawing example is female, and that every female in this book looks like a hydrocephalic five-year-old with big, BIG boobs.
I hate the fact that this book is a non-stop commercial for Copic brand markers and accessories. C'mon people! Ease up on the brand imprinting already! It's not as if any U.S. manufacturer still makes airbrush accessories for their markers. We're already a captive audience, there's no need to rub it in.
I hate the fact that since this is mainly a big ol' undisguised ad for Copic, they couldn't be bothered to at least sell the thing at a lower price.
I hate the fact that the hydrocephalic five-year-old with big, BIG boobs is frequently posed with eye-gougingly obvious phallic symbols. Be it an ice cream or the airbrush assembly or the markers themselves, you can bet Miss perky-panties will be giving it the lovin'.
I hate the fact that I have to wade through all that garbage to get to the real and useful information.
I hate the fact that there are people out there who find that kind of illustration acceptable, or worse, appealing.
GAH! In a series that is widely known as hit-n-miss, this volume is most assuredly a miss.
Excellent for the Serious Drawer.......2003-09-01
This is a very unique manga-drawing guide as it covers specifically colored pictures. However, I I felt that it did an excellent job of covering that subject.
For example, this book had a section that showed how the same colored drawing would look on many, many different types of paper. It also explained the differences between, water, oil, and alchohol-based markers and important little things to know about them. (For example, oil-based markers will dissolve toner.) It also mentioned things such as not coloring too quickly or too slowly, and photocopying your images when coloring to make room for mistakes. It even tells you multiple ways of storing and protecting your finished artwork and where to make copies...
The guide also goes on to airbrush techniques...
Also, this book provided several solid examples of doing colored drawings step by step. And, this volume was quite free of ecchi material, which is an enormous plus in my view.
Finally, the little mini-manga at the beginning and end of the book added a cute touch to the guide. The store salesperson who appears often throughout the pages makes the book more fun to read despite the fact that this guide is much more technical than other volumes.
Overall, this is a wondeful How to Draw Manga book. Although it it more for the slightly advanced drawer who has some decent experience with drawing manga, it's a fun and educational (in terms of drawing) read for anyone who loves drawing manga.
